This video is about System Of A Down Chop Suey Reaction!! - Видеоклипы
In an interview, Daron Malakian explained, "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die'. The lyric passages 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit' and 'why have you forsaken me?' are a reference to Jesus' death on the cross, as, according to the Gospels, it was one of the seven things Jesus said while dying."
I'm pretty sure you guys only do this because you love it. Why else would you sit down for 30min to talk about any song. I said it before, and I'll say it again... I love this channel.
You have read us correctly! -Sori
Most reactions channels are like "Uhm yeah that is pretty cool, peace"
my love kettj i miss her
i dencing this song at velvet
@@VinAndSori "I die when angels deserve to die" is referencing both the self hate and the hate a suicide gets from other people (like you said: Christian extremists or cruel people calling them cowardly) because they're viewed as a devil that deserve to go to hell. The only angels that "deserve to die" are FALLEN angels; devils.
"Self righteous suicide" is referencing both how a suicide might feel about himself commiting the act, how others view him commiting the act, AND EVEN how one can view Jesus dying the cross as "commiting the act". Because what Jesus basically did was suicide by cop. He antagonized the Jews and LET them kill him; in a sense that's suicide.
So it's basically saying, "If you're going to talk shit about suicides, why aren't you talking shit about Jesus?".
This really is such an important song. It's one of the few from this era of music that was truly able to cross musical borders. I distinctly remember people who hated all forms of heavy music saying that they loved this track. To this day, Serj is one of my favorite vocalists. He has such an incredible range and is able to pour so much power and emotion into his voice. As Game of Thrones fans, have you listened to his live performance of Rains of Castamere? It is so haunting.
Love you guys!
-Jason
Just a little message to say that I find you guys really interresting to watch and that you are doing a great job! It is allways cool to see people reacting to the bands we love, it feels great! I appreciate it a lot, keep up the good work! :)
Vin, thank you very much for talking about your suicidal issues back in the day. I'm currently going through a ton of medical issues and it feels like a lot of hope is lost right now for me. Hearing others talk about their own personal experiences gives me perspective and helps a bit deal with the black hole of my medical issues.
I'm happy to hear that you got through those tough times and that you are doing better. Keep your heads up high!
CHANGE THE BATTERY IN YOUR SMOKE ALARM!!!!!!!
I know this is coming a while after but you guys inspired me to finally start my channel playing bass on this Rocksmith game/learning program. But I started this channel of mine and the day after I first saw you guy's breakdown of the song and learned how much it meant to Vin I played this song on bass with 100% accuracy for the first time ever. So I just want to dedicate that accomplishment to you guys and especially Vin. Not an easy song and days later I still can't believe I played it perfectly. Thank you.
Love watching you guys and your reactions to the videos shed different views people have on songs etc
I remember as a child, about 11 or 12 asking my Grandmother about suicide. My Grandmother was a devoted Christian that truly loved Jesus with all her heart. I asked if she thought people that committed suicide would really go to hell & she told me she didn’t believe that. That those people were suffering & God would never punish them further.
Sparky my man! Viva la Viv? Glad to see y'all back and in good spirits. I've been secretly waiting for this one, the most iconic SOAD song, IMO.
Vin, I'm glad you made it also!
I think the lyrics can also really fit in the Armenian Genocide thing, being it a literal suicide of someone who were connected to the moment and survived or a direct descendent who saw the aftermath on those who survived and the person is asking why have god forsaken the Armenian. But it can also be a play with words and ironic approach to those who don't admit the genocide happen, like if all those people were not killed then maybe it was a mass suicide or something, not only the first part fits here the make up part the hide the scars of what happened, and the part "I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide" can be seen as no one believes it was a suicide it was something else.
also the part: why have you forsaken me and I cry when angels deserve to die is the most serious part to not accept why does people died and why did god abandon them in that moment, and we talk about a lot about other genocides but not much about that one as there are those who don't admit it happened.
such a great video, great introspection, I liked the thoughts about the song as much or more than the song
I love this channel so much!
I know this is an older video and this might not be read but going thru a horrible time with bad, health, bad relationship, bad family situation, not being able to work, loss of faith, etc. Ya'll explaining this has put me in a better mind set and made me emotional in a good way.
Love both of reactions to the music you look into keep doing it loving it not requesting a song looking at all the songs you both reacted to alot so I have to read all of them and watch them
Sori seem scare to say her opinion, its ok to have opinion Sori. Keep up the good work btw
True that.. I was about to say this
your explanation is really good!!!
Thank you, been interested in a proper lyrical breakdown of this song for forever...
Love y’all!❤️
YOU TWO ARE ADORABLE TOGETHER. Ohyeah song review was spot on as well I guess ;)
Good stuff guys
Just want to say as a Wiccan I've found your channel really interesting and open minded and coming from a religious background it's odd for me to see open Christians and it makes me happy to see people like you exist in this world I've watched 6 or 7 of your music reviews so far and love the back and forth commentary I think Vin grew up more like I did (depressed suicidal and misunderstood) and listened to the same music I did to find light we just found it in different ways
Well welcome to the channel! -Sori
The thing I love about Serj's music is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways. That's a hallmark of good music; you can internalize it and it takes on a different meaning for everyone. No one is right or wrong. Love SOAD. 🤘
I love the fact that this song can be interpreted in so many ways. There are about 12 others I came up with. I love hearing your ideas.
Just gonna copy and past this from what I said in the Toxicity Review.
I live in the DC area and bought this album the week of the 911 attacks. The highways were completely empty as the bridges in and out of DC were shut down. I listened to this for the first time on the way home after the attack on the Pentagon which is 10 minutes from where I worked. The street my office was on was an emergency path for first responders and we just watched on the news as fire trucks, ambulances and police sped by. The music and lyrics for me, are probably tinted a bit as far as meaning goes because of what happened that day... but it was a surreal life/music moment. Driving home on an empty I-95 highway that is usually bumper to bumper traffic, not being able to contact anyone because the phones were down. That was a crazy day. So to me, no matter what the meanings are for these songs, they are all about that day.
Don’t remember this! Wow
I mean, imagine listening to "Self Righteous Suicide" after terrorists essentially just committed suicide by flying planes into buildings around you. Songs like this, Jet Pilot, Toxicity, Aerials... all became about what was happening that day. Was such a surreal soundtrack to that day.
Whoa that’s quite the memory! Wow -Sori✌🏻
It was a crazy day. I was working at the Kennedy Center (in DC) at the time. I remember standing up on the roof terrace and just seeing that terrible column of black smoke and knowing we had to drive past it on the way out of town. I remember trying (and I suspect failing miserably) trying to comfort a intern who's father worked in the Pentagon. Thankfully her father was ok aside from some cuts and minor burns. I remember watching on a tiny tv in our warehouse as the second tower was hit and realizing that it wasn't just an accident. I remember frantically trying to contact my carpool guys but being completely unable to reach ANYONE. Its a day that I imagine few will forget, doubly so if you were in NYC or DC that day. And to be honest its a day no one should forget.
Haha! That's definitely different than my experience :)
I never analyzed the keys on the table like that!!!!!! Very good interpretation!
there is a beep/squeak that occurs randomly that makes me think my smoke detector needs a new battery.
with that said....
great video and discussion on this guys.
VinAnd Sori are the best react channel of the World and the World is Big! I Love Both!!
Sori has the cutest laugh!😁
I was at a a day to remember and papa roach concert a couple months ago and between them switching the set this song came on and just like you said the whole crowd sang the entire song word for word lol
Vin. Same man. It brought me back too, to those times.
A big Hallo from Germany!!!! One of the last shows Mr. Anthony Bourdain(R.I.P.) made, was a tour in Armenia with Serj Tankian... I found it a nice coincidence that u mentioned Mr. Bourdain in a reaction of Serj Tankians Band. Keep it going. Metal is the law... And Tool is the ink that the law was writen with. Peace
Whoa!
Anthony Bourdain actually did an episode with Serj shortly before he died where he visited Armenia and drank in the culture
MooseyFate Damn, seriously!?
Sean Dan ...I made sure to watch that episode...was great!
:(
I hear he used to drink a lot in general lol
Here it is: ruclips.net/video/B0st2H8cOXw/видео.html
There are many interpretations to be presented here. I feel simply,. We do what we want. I was personally always blown away by the shifting moods and power and raw emotion of his voice to lyrically unpack this song..thanks for sharing your comments.
I always thought it was strange that the theme from M.A.S.H. the television show is called Suicide Is Painless. The only other song that comes to mind is Queen's Don't Try Suicide which was the B-side to the single Another One Bites The Dust. I truly love and respect the thoughtful analysis and care you both put into each broadcast. Keep up the good work, it blesses many.
Whoa! Did not know that about mash !
You guys seem very chill.. It's refreshing to see even keeled people in this crazy world we live. Keep on keeping on!
I'll throw out a request but i see you guys are very well established so I'll probably just be a tiny speck of a voice in the sea of voices...but would love to hear you guys check out Solution 45's "The Close Beyond". Vocalist Christian Alvestam is (IMO) the best metal vocalist in the industry...so much so that he's in 10+ bands, has too many guest appearances to count...etc.
Whether you do this or not, love the channel guys. Especially love that you guy dissect the tracks and talk about current issues surrounding the tracks. Not just a blast through and move on, but really let it sink it. Very cool.
Keep asking !
there was this one time where i out of sudden i started cry on " why do I cry when angels deserve to die" made me think of a friend of mine that suppose to be the angel who died and i end up feeling left behind
He wasnt actually talking to someone and being honest. He was talking to himself. "You wanted to" was the voice in his head.
That last part always give me the feels
SLAYER-ANGEL OF DEATH!!!!
I have never taken this song this way at all. This album was number one when 9/11 happened and the band was impacted by that as were the fans I am sure, the mix of emotions for them I'm sure was intense.
I love how you breakdown the lyrics, and find meaning to them. Have you heard Swedish band called Clawfinger? They have song called Two sides. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it. Shoutout from Finland. Love you guys.
Looking good sparky! Gah sparky has a way with words :’)
This is more of a review than a reaction
Enemy13 this is my second time watching their video. I like how how it went. The guy knows the song.
But reaction. Seems someone on this channel did research before recording the video
ikr
Great great song!!!
Well, I do remember the time when everyone was listening to this song, as a teen myself. Although in my case, it doesn't bring back memories of bad times, they could have definitely been better, but in the end I probably miss those days, not a care in a world, no responsability, depression for me only came after that. Oh, and yeah, at the time I just thought the song was fun, I never gave a shit about the lyrics.
Anyway, interesting to hear you two talk about this one. And to Vin, you've clearly been through some shit, but look at you now, doing good, with a beautiful wife and kids. Congrats man! And now you also have the channel, which while not nearly as important, I'm sure you're very proud of too, reaching people all over the world.
Hell, you even have someone to annoy you almost daily, to react to some Agalloch, even though that someone thinks you won't even like it, ain't that cool, haha.
When will you guys do some Bolt Thrower? I'd love to see you do any song of them but it'd be very good for you guys if you started with '...For Victory'. You'll get into it immediately!
Vin always looking like you trying to remember if you cleared your browsing history
Another great reaction guys
For me, the last line always sounds like he's saying "Why cry when angels deserve to die" instead of I cry. I don't know if it's just me or if someone else hears it as well.
Yeah you're right, I heard a why too
Vin, you opened me up to a different view on the keys on the table line. thats pretty deep man.
I see this song as being about an abusive relationship, the victim wakes up, and uses makeup to hide the bruises and scars from the abuse, and making fables to explain them away to friends.
the key line, I previously viewed as an example of the arbitrary excuses the abuser creates to be abusive.
what you said could very well be true as well.
I think the abuse leads the victim to question God for allowing it to happen, asking "why have you forsaken me"
and ultimately committing suicide because they cannot see an escape from their abuser.
the best part of this song, is that it's so open to interpretation, people can relate to it in many ways.
Vin nailed the meaning of the lyrics '"i cry when angels deserve to die " because that was exacty the answer Serj gave to an interviewer. He said I cry when i read or hear that someone going through a
personal hell died because of drugs or other issues and some people say he derseved to die , he got out of our way , this is what everyone like him -her should do.
Patiently waiting for more Mastodon. You'd all be surprised at how different their music sounds even track to track let alone album to album
I can't say this enough. You guys are awesome. Also, I can't possibly request the video for Angtoria- "God Has A Plan For Us All" enough or Candlemass- "Solitude" (with Messiah).
SOAD - B.Y.O.B :)
Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust, Drama for Life and Choice Millionaire
Machine Head - A Farewell to Arms, Descend the Shades of Night and Imperium
Linkin Park - Given Up
Armenian rock! Thanks for the video...and all the entertaining and enlightening stuff that goes with it. You are both wonderful.
I just found y’all this morning when I saw your korn video of daddy. I have been binge watching since lol. I dig both of you. I have a suggestion, band: “A night in Texas” song “The rotten king”. Im not exactly religious per say, I have a grandfather and uncle that are preachers here in Texas; but I’m open to everything and I like how you both are opened minded at seeing things without compromising you religion and I respect that. That being said, check that song out I’d LOVE to here your take on that song. Blessings to you both
Daron Malakian explained, "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. So how you died is more important then how you lived. Like, if you were to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs, but if that same person died from natural causes the narrative would be totally different. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die'.
Guitarist Daron Malakian: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"
As I lay dying SIX
the bandana definitely adds more beauty
I would recommend putting social media links in the description, usually I hate it when youtuber do it so it's up to you. I'm too lazy to fine your Facebook lol
Interviews with System of a Down have commented that this song is about Christ. In that he was giving himself to save all of humanity. Vin (Viv) nailed it. The angels were used in the song as a religious reference.
Keys on the table is referring to depressed to the point of not getting out of bed, in my humblest
Thank you guys for the honesty in your video full of primal personal emotion from Vin and sincere reactions from Sori. Not that I have struggled with self destruction but I know what it is to be down. I love SOAD and Alice In Chains. I think they capture the darkness of the struggling soul like no one. Misery likes company. Them Bones and Down in a Hole by AIC may be tunes you could consider for future reactions...✌🏽
Death-Flesh and the Power it Holds!
This was a very in depth discussion about this song that I never considered, I thought about it from sori's perspective initially but I have also been in the spot Vin has been in to some level, I just haven't ever accepted the fact my ex wife made that decision truly despite the fact I see it from that perspective, Vin you understand my personal thought process despite never going through what you have, respect my dude!
Always had fun with this song. As I have mentioned before, I am a sucker for the eastern stylings. Last time I saw them, they were playing a festival just before NIGHTWISH. Speaking of which:
NIGHTWISH "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013.
NIGHTWISH "Poet and the Pendulum" live at Wembly Arena 2015.
WASP has a really great song for 9/11 called "Hallowed Ground". The band was in the studio in NYC just blocks away at the time of the attacks and the song was written and recorded while the emotions were still fresh and raw
Lord of the lost "raining stars"
LMBO I lost it when that dude called you Viv....
Abiogenesis - Visualize. Vin, you will love this one.
This guy is really smart. He knows what he's talking about.
The girl just listens..
React to down with the sickness next!
Vin adn Sori PLEAAASE do Angra - Spread Your Fire!! love you guys!
Yeah, System is a peculiar band. Listening to a track such as "Pizza pie" or seeing titles like "This cocaine makes me feel like I'm on this song" it's easy to dismiss the band as silly. But there is thought behind those seemingly incoherent ramblings. Love it or hate it SOAD is a unique band.
What happened to the Black Flame??? If no one has yet suggested it, we need some Imperial presence! I request Inno A Satana by Emperor.
I'm not religious or spiritual myself but you guys are awesome... I like you alot 😁 I genuinely enjoy hearing your perspectives even when it's framed within a Christian context which would normally be annoying but your not the annoying Christian types. Lol Your the decent human beings first and foremost type 😊 the world needs more people like you
If you're going out and don't take your keys... you don't plan on coming back. That destroyed me when I finally understood.
You guys are amazing! And I respect your opinions on the song ✌
Oh! Do "BYOB", "Lonely", and "Sugar", if you want
REACT TO PANTERA - SUICIDE NOTE PT. 1 & 2 PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Both songs would make a cool discussion. It's also Pantera's softest song with part 1 and part 2 is their heaviest.
Vin and SORI... I love su much...
Right back at you !
Thinking about Vin's explanation about the meaning of the song, sounds more realistic. Great analysis, buddy!
ive done it. i survived, AND came out of the coma i was in for a week. its a miracle really, it is. (i don't have children) not going to explain my thought process at the time or the why's. right now, almost 5 years later im still struggling with forgiving myself. i have a feeling it will haunt me to my grave. if theirs ever any decision i could take back it would be that day. to people who think that their alone, and their family doesn't love them or doesn't care, just know that there ARE people who do! either open your eyes, or find them. you are here for a reason. theirs someone you've yet to meet, or someone you've yet to touch, save, comfort, love. people depend on you being there, whether you know it or not. just go to bed and wake up to see another day. for some reason god told me, "no buddy, you're not leaving yet", i know he's saying that to everyone who's alive right now. you have a purpose. and if that sounds too cheesy, then how about this, your only here once, wtf is 100 yrs huh? chump change! you'll be fine when the sun rises
Hey!
Thanks for the videos and discussion...love them! Have you heard of Silent Planet? They’re an amazing band with powerful lyrics...their first album “the night god slept” is a theodicy based on twelve historical muses and their second album “everything was sound” is focused on mental health.
My favorites are from album 1- firstwake, darkstrand, first Mother, and from album 2- inhabit the wound, redivider, and understanding love as loss.
Hope you both check them out!
Peace, Koko
You two really seemed to dig Black Sabbath, I think Symptom of the Universe would be a great reaction. It's such a great song.
For underground I'm thinking Carcass, maybe Blind Bleeding the Blind. No Love Lost and Corporal Jigsore Quandary are kinda the go tos but Blind is pretty different.
Keep up the good work!
Architects - Broken Cross
I think it would be interesting if you guys reacted to Serj Tankian's "Disowned inc".
Devin Townsend have a song called Suicide and is very good one back in 2000's
I don't know if it's the actual lyric or not, but the very last verse I don't hear "I cry when angels deserve to die." I hear "Why cry? When angels deserve to die."
I'm new so I'm not sure if you've done it but I think it would be cool if you reacted to The Smashing Pumpkins. They're not metal but they're amazing. Also love you guys ❤️
One of my parents frowned upon this song at first, despite being a metalhead themself, so I used to explain it away by claiming that self-righteous suicide wasn't a self-righteous act of commiting suicide, but rather the self-killing of one's self-righteousness. I consider self-righteousness to be a typically negative thing. I was a deep lyric reading 12 year old in '01. Please react to "Know Your Enemy" by Rage Against the Machine.
I will never forget a young women tried to commit suicide but was saved in the ER. When she woke up she started screaming a crying asking why wont you let me die. So sad.
A year ago I died, I was clinically dead for 10 minutes. The group I was running with at the time..Didn't check on me and left me for dead..It's not really related to the song or subject matter...Needless to say mistakes were made. And I had my coming to Jesus moment. All I could do, was pray and plead for forgiveness...Thank God, praise Yeshua
Prison song is my favorite on that album
Migils Deer Dance is my jam
So many good tracks on that record :)
Needles and Forest are my favorite songs off of Toxicity.
Other reactors had to cut audio and do stuff like you did to review and react to as I lay dying all their original videos were blocked too
My favorite part was when Sori sang along and basically made an amazing harmony o.o
Also, that one line about shake up is. “Hide the scars away with shakeup” shakeup is a different word for make up
