    "Du hast" is a phrase, which in German sounds similar to "du hasst".
    One means you have ans the other one "you hate"
    Rammstein are often playing with the German language. In this way you have different stages within their songs and much room for interpretation.

    • @befrnigel
      @befrnigel 6 лет назад +1

      But they did an english version of it so there's no double meaning in that one. :)

      @@befrnigel No they actually made it worse. The orginal meaning is you have the spelling makes it obvious in the lyrics, they purposefully translated it wrong for their English versions.

      @@befrnigel the song is called "Du hast" (you have) and not "du hasst" (hate). Obvious they play with the double meaning. Official in the lyrics they put "you have" but the first chorus line "Du hast mich." - most of the germans have the meaning of "Du hasst mich" (you hate me) in their head while singing along. And thats for 100% intentional. That they played the english version with "you hate me" dosnt matter, it actual fits in the logic of the bands genius. German version (with the double meaning from the sound included) written with "have", englisch version with "hate" - so it just supports the meaning of the double meaning in this song. If u analyse Rammstein songs u will recognize that, even if they sound simple, are lyrical masterpieces, always with an deeper meaning u have to read out. I think its nearly impossible to get every part of the story "behind the lyrics" if ur not a native speaker of the german language.

      It is a play on words. You don't read songs, you listen to them.
      When Till sings "Du...du has(s) t...du has(s)t mich...." it could either mean "You have" or "You hate". It is not until the line "Du hast mich gefragt", that the meaning gets clear. But the lyrics still have a double-meaning in that sense. You're not giving Till enough credit, he is an amazing lyricist, if you know German. :)

    Finally!!! My favorite band!
    There's also another word pun on this track. When tey said "Willst du bis zum Tod, der scheide" you can read "Do you want to death, which separates", but if you delete comma "Willst du bis zum Tod der scheide" it means "Do you want until the death of vagina".
    All song it's a sort of satire of the words use for wedding cerimony

    Til is an outstanding artist (his mom is an actress), he plays (with the few) words he use and their (double) meaning (phonetic) as "you have" ("du hast" ) / "you hate" ("du hasst"). He also paints. Even the videos made by Rammstein are mostly influenced by Til. Greatings from a German Rammstein fan.🤘

    Rammstein once mentioned that this wedding phrase is more ment for friendship and band issues... like they didnt want to promise them each other not to do anything else in matters with music instead of "Rammstein".... well and that has been approved later on... Btw the song title can also be seen as a pun. If you add another s (Du hasst) it translates to "You hate". It's on purpose i believe because either way it makes sense.

    As most not native speakers you missed some facts on this video:
    The whole song is based on a german pun which can not be translated but I try to explain.
    Based on the fact that "Du hast" means "You have" and "You hasst" with double-s means "You hate" every german native speaker hear this when listen to the song for the first time:
    Du = You
    Du ha(s)st = You hate
    Du ha(s)st mich = You hate me *So the crowd and the singer shout at each other "You hate me"*
    It goes this way until 2:50 when the pun gets resolved with the next word
    Du hast mich gefragt = You have asked me
    Du hast mich gefragt und ich habe nichts gesagt = You have aske me and I have said nothing
    Everyone is flashed by the fact he was thinking the song is about someone who hates somebody when it only about some who ask somebody
    You might ask what was he ask. The singer sings the german mariage oath, like will you mary him and be true to him all the time .... and the background and the crowd shout 4:00 "Nein" = No
    Trust me, I'm German.

    • @RandomPerson-yq1qk
      @RandomPerson-yq1qk 4 года назад

      That is not the only important meaning of the "Du hast mich". It is "You hate me" and "You have me" which is important and obviously meant because it is about a relationship.

    Its a play on words in German. Du hast/you have, is the German equivalent of ''I Do'' in a wedding. But its sounds like Du Hasst/you hate, when spoken. The song is about a man that has come to hate the woman he married, and is renouncing his vows. In the video the man murders his wife while saying his wedding vows.

  • @FzNd
    @FzNd 6 лет назад +4

    Rammstein's live show is amongst the best out there. Singer Til Lindemann is also a fully trained and licensed pyrotechnician. It kinda shows ;) I imagine doing Rammstein without being highly proficient in German is really tricky. Till is a genius lyricist and there's tons of layers and multiple meanings to his lyrics. I imagine a lot of that gets stuck in the language barrier. But it's a true testament to how powerful their music (especially their live show) is that they still transcend that barrier and are able to amaze people all over the globe.
    Recommendations for fantastic Rammstein songs:
    Mutter
    Sonne
    Mein Teil (live is insane. It involves a giant cooking pot ;))
    Engel (more recent live version with the Angel wings are also super cool)
    Also, should you be in need of translations or comments on lyrical content, I'd be happy to help.

    Vin...I am so jealous dude! You saw them live?! Man I wish lol!

  • @YouArchTube
    @YouArchTube 5 лет назад +3

    Hey Vin!
    There''s a TRICK right at the beginning of the lyrics.
    You have read it as: "You have me, You have me, You have me asked...".
    But in german original the lyrics has an ambiguous context, because
    you can write it down in two ways:
    1. "Du hast mich..." - which really means "You have me..."
    OR
    2. "Du HASST mich..." - which means "You HATE me..."
    So It would look like: "You hate me, You hate me... You have me asked..."
    Knowing Rammstein's propensity for controversy, they wanted the second way, which is impossible to catch in speech, until it's written.
    They like to play games with words. That's why I had this case discussed in German lessons :)

    A prenup is smart. Nothing in life is ever guaranteed except for the universal law of entropy, and taxes. A prenup doesnt mean you dont trust the other person at all because what was gained on ones own before marriage should always remain theirs. If a prenup is a dealbreaker then i guess they dont respect that you worked for what you have because they can put stuff on the agreement also. Its financially smart for both people.

Not to mention the energy that comes from being in the crowd! Feuer Frei is definitely one of my favorites live! A word about their lyrical content: they are very open and free with their sexuality; especially Till Lindman (main vocals), so answering NO to marriage vows is very much within character for them. Yes, this song is a tongue in cheek perversion of marriage vows. They tend to leave the true meaning up to your interpretation.

    Agree with Vin. Slipknot and Rammstein were the best live shows I have ever seen in person. They have SOOO many good songs. Can't wait for you guys to dig deeper into their catalog.

    I went to see these guys back in (I think) 2010 in Melbourne and they're easily 1 of the best bands that I've seen live, they sounded just as good as the album but also put on an amazing show ... even if I was in the pit on a 40°C+ day with them shooting flames into the air

    Yep, the pyros are insane. In fact the vocalist is a fully trained, certified and licensed pyrotechnician. He could play with fire for a living!
