You'd think, it's NOT for those in depression, based on the lyrics. Actually, it's been credited for saving many lives by giving those in despair, someone they relate to. The vocalist says goodby, but the music that follows has an uplifting, hopeful, beautiful feeling, which gave them some light, and changed their perspective.

I got suckered into going to church with a buddy of mine when I was younger (couldn't drive, had no choice). The guy played this as suicide theme song and watched me sing along. He was very disappointed, lol. I said, this song has probably saved more lives than it "took". When people can relate to something, it can move you in a positive way, even if it's dark subject matter.
To me, music like this is the rock equivalent of the blues... You go to low places, but find a reason to hold on.

Little Richard once said that country is the white mans blues, and i agree with him. Different expressions and different roots but basically covers the same stuff. Love gone bad, living as a poor man in a hard world, drowning your feelings with alcohol etc.

I’m glad you’re still with us! Back then mental health wasn’t talked about. It was almost a taboo subject. My first time hearing Metallica was in 1985. I raised my boys on Metallica and got to take them to see them in 2018! My youngest who is currently 22 struggles with mental health and has attempted to leave this world. He too credits this song as helpful to him still being here so even decades later it still helps another generation!

When I heard this at the age of 14 my mind was blown. It was the first song I connected with on a deeper, personal soulful level as it speaks of the thoughts we all have sometimes but are convinced no one else have. It made me feel more connected to the world

Such a great song. In 1986 I was on military leave and visiting family in SoCal, Ozzy was playing the Long Beach Arena so a cousin and I bought tickets. We walked from his condo past the Queen Mary to the arena and Metallica was the opening act, never heard of them, they rocked hard for an hour. Good times...

In the 80s this type of HEAVY METAL was "underground, on a down low, under the table stuff and these bands like JUDAS PRIEST, METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, SCORPIONS were very successful just by word of mouth, awesome reaction guys glad y'all liked this one

🙌 I had to go back and edit my comment to be 40 years ago when this song was everything for me not 35. I don’t even know why I second guessed it. I was 17 and this was my battle cry. I’m 57 now so yeah I think I’m still coming to grips with the fact that yes 40 years have passed since this song meant so much to me. Still on my playlist.

James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) of Metallica was 22 yrs of age in 1984 when he came up w/ 'Fade to black'... the lyrics came to him after his favorite guitar amp was stolen on tour; he was depressed ... and he and Lars Ulrich (drums) had talked about death quite a bit during that time... The other members (Lars, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Cliff Burton) were all credited w/ the song, likely added their parts to the song when they rehearsed the track.
Metallica were working on their 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning' in '84... and James Hetfield was used to writing fast & furious thrash metal riffs... but he came up w/ an acoustic piece for the first time as Metallica progressed, which built in intensity and ended w/ a furious climax.
He knew he had something special when he visited his then-girlfriend's house and her sister was blasting 'Fade to black' on her stereo player.
Ironically, James Hetfield was nearly killed in 1992 while playing 'Fade to black'... At a stadium show in Montreal, Canada... Hetfield was known to drink heavily on tour and he was confused where he was onstage... He wandered into a pyro zone and the pyrotechnician didn't see him when he set off the fires during the song. Hetfield was severely burnt onstage and collapsed; if he had inhaled, he could have been killed. He was rushed to the hospital and treated for severe burns and Metallica could not continue their set... Guns N' Roses were the next band performing and they were late... and they left the stage early. As a result the fans rioted and destroyed the venue that night...
Hetfield actually resumed touring w/ Metallica soon after... but he was unable to play guitar while his burn injuries healed... so, his guitar tech John Marshall played his guitar parts onstage while Hetfield sang live.

This is such a beautiful song. I’ve heard this song many times before hearing that it’s about suicide. Actually, when my grandma was dying, this song literally just helped me with the pain of losing someone I love so very much. I always thought the song was about losing a loved one and that’s why I connected to it when my grandma passed away. Then my stepdad passed away of cancer like 5 years after my grandma. It was very hard for us (my mom, my daughter and me) and this song just helped me cope with the pain and hurt.
I will sometimes just hear this song on the radio or whenever it comes on my Alexa and sometimes I’m fine and sometimes I just need a good cry ❤ the power of music can do that to people ❤

It's hard to explain but this was an uplifting song as an 80s teen. In my mind it expressed the hopelessness but somehow gave the will to carry on. Again I can't explain it but it's one of my favorite songs and got me through hard times and dark places as a teen. That's the power music. I like the review keep it up but will add in the 80s this and most metal of that time was considered offensive and/or the devils music.🤘

Sometimes on tour he will play the intro using a special 2 necked gutsitr but other times he is using two separate gutsirs

Have been a huge fan of the band, and this song especially for almost 40 years. I have Cliff Burton tattooed on my for over 30 years. This song I discovered in my early teens, was always uplifting and connected to me in so many ways. I used to laugh at the prospect of "a suicide song", this is one of the last songs I'd put on if I wanted to end myself (unless I didn't want to) as it gets so uplifting and the the end of the song every time I hear it, I am so happy + amped up.

Cliff's bass style elevates the guitars in this. As far as the switch ups, the bits are the narrators struggle and depression and the it turns to determination as he comes to his choice and then the end instrumentals as the goodbye fades is the release of all of it. Sometimes it amazes me as many of my generation made it to adulthood. We didn't make it easy with lyrics like these.

At the time, you had to know someone to find out about Metallica because, like you said, they weren't on the radio or MTV. Master of Puppets is the ALBUM for you to hit from beginning to end. With that said, I think it's best when people go from the start to the end of an artist's body of work. It shows the growth and change in the artists and Metallica is no exception to that rule! Fading out is the perfect way to go on this song
This was cool, because i picked up this album in the early 2000s when i was a few years into learning guitar because they had the guitar parts for this song transcribed in a magizine i had. Probably havent listened to thi song in close to 20 years but as soon as it started playing i remembered all the parts! Crazy, glad this showed up.
You are right that there was nothing like Metallicca in 1984. Every new album they did from Kill 'Em All throught And Justice For All were all fantastic and unique and then everyone in Metal followed thier lead. They really set the standard for metal until they went pop with the Black album.
I don't mean to be rude, but were you around and old enough to be listening to this in 1984? Metallica was popular, but there were many metal bands just as if not more popular including Maiden and Priest. And as for this specific type of thrash, you had other bands including Slayer and Anthrax.
@@brentsobie3977 I was a metalhead teenager in 1984. And Metallica was cutting edge metal that was a cut different than the pop metal of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Of course, Ozzy was Ozzy and Dio was Dio and they were the OGs of 80s metal. But Metallica were the pioneers of the real metal that evolved into thrash and eventually grunge as opposed to the Iron Maidens and Def Leppards which led to the musicaly boring glam-metal scene of Motley Crue and GnR and especcially Skid Row. It wasn't until "Enter Sandman" the Black Album, did Metallicca moved on the Pop metal arena so they could start making the cash they (probably) deserved. But thier music sicked after that and I tuned out.

10 years between Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Ride the lightning. That is such a leap in musical development. I know it is two diffrent groups and of course that also factors. But Metalica all listend to Black Sabbath and was inspired by it. Imagine being like 16 when you listen to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and then picks up this album only 10 years later. Insane!
This is when Metallica was good and made music from the heart. And Justice for All was the last album they did before becoming commercialized. And then of course Lars decided to fuck it all up with Napster.
This their 2nd album and MOP their 3rd are a 1-2 punch that is hard to equal

Metal music was underground back in the 80s. It didn’t get radio play at all. We learned about f new music through magazines, word of mouth and bands like Metallica who endlessly toured to get their music out.
Favorite Metallica album.
Interesting you said sound production. This was album #2 for them. And as much as I like aspects and songs off their first one, Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning has such a better sound mix that it makes it more listenable than the first one. One thing I like about this song is the guitars can teleport you to a different headspace. And I think the subject matter needs that hard and soft guitar in it.

James lost his mom who helped him buy the amp that was stolen with other equipment and it hurt, but this came from that loss. His parents were into Christian Science and when his mom got sick his parents religious beliefs prevented her getting g medical attention. This is from memory and I’m in my mid 50s so I might have got some of this wrong. Hard to believe first hearing Metallica when I was 15.
This was the very first Death Metal ballad, ever.
That is how far Metallica was ahead of the rest of the world.
