80s Metallica was more heavy metal than rock. This album "Master of Puppets" is arguably their best album.

From Danish wiki about this track.
The track starts with the bass fading in all by itself. The bass sound is distorted and driven in through a flanger effect. Then the drums start and there are some guitar solos. In the middle of the number, a break is made, after which a bass solo is continued. There is another guitar solo followed by a short bass solo. Cliff Burton said in an interview about the bass solo "People are probably not even going to notice it but it's there".
Orion was played at Cliff Burton's funeral after his death in 1986.

This was late bassist Cliff Burton's work, just before his tragic death in a tour bus accident in 1986... When he joined Metallica in 1983, he was the only schooled musician in the band... Cliff Burton was a huge fan of 70's rock, but also listened to classical music - he would play tapes for Metallica and share crucial tips on musical arrangements, melodies and harmonies... He was a huge part of Metallica's early musical development... As a bassist, he was unbridled - he would play w/ distortion so that it sounded like a rhythm guitar and he would play lead harmonies on bass.
'Orion' was 1 of 2 instrumentals he had recorded w/ Metallica ("Pulling teeth" was the 3rd, a bass solo that Burton would do at live concerts)... the 2nd was the similarly cinematic 'The call of Ktulu'...
'Orion' has this subtle, quiet part that sounded like someone adrift in space and had a sad, mournful melody ... It almost sounded like Cliff Burton had an inkling somehow that he was not going to be around much longer and this was his wordless "goodbye" ... His sister Connie Burton recalled that her brother would often turn on the TV in the morning (They both lived w/ their parents) and watch Billy Graham's Ministries ... and was unusually absorbed about sermons ... particularly about 'the kingdom of salvation' in the afterlife (Burton was not overtly religious and Connie felt it was an odd habit) He simply told her that he found it interesting...
Metallica did an instrumental after Burton's death - 'To live is to die'... it contained a brief spoken word poem that Burton had written about 'the kingdom of salvation' inspired by Graham's Ministries.
Years later, Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) of Metallica recalled the band on the tour bus in Europe in 1986, they argued about sleeping arrangements and they decided to draw cards that night... Cliff Burton drew the Ace of Spades, looked at Hammett and demanded his sleeping bunk... Hammett grumbled but gave it up to Burton and went to the front of the bus... Later that very night, Hammett recalled being woken by noises and violent shaking... then, the bus flipped and sent the band and crew off their bunks.
With the bus finally stopped and was on its side, Hammett was the first to locate the emergency exit hatch and opened it to step out - he saw Cliff Burton's legs sticking out from under the bus... Apparently, the bus driver had overcorrected on the highway in Sweden while going too fast and the bus skidded before being flipped on the side of the highway... Burton was sleeping in Kirk Hammett's usual bunk and he was thrown out the window and the bus landed on him, killing him instantly... Any other day, it could have been Kirk Hammett who could have died.
A crane turned up to lift the bus, but it was far too late... the bus driver blamed 'black ice' on the road for the accident... James Hetfield of Metallica said he walked along the highway looking for black ice but couldn't find any and was furious... He and Hammett were heard yelling at the bus driver for a while as the others trapped in the bus had to be rescued. The band & crew were treated for injuries and driven to a hotel where they drank heavily to cope w/ the trauma...
The loss of Cliff Burton was a hard one - he was only 24 years of age ... Metallica was never able to go in the musical direction they could have if he had lived... Jason Newsted (bass) was hired in '86 so that Metallica could go back on tour, but he was subjected to a lot of 'hazing' by band & crew because they blamed him somehow for the loss of Burton.

The Metallica sound in this era is thrash metal and features prominently on their first four albums. Many of their contemporaries went their own ways with the style, often heavier (Slayer), or more hardcore punk influenced {S.O.D) but what gave Metallica their unique approach was a very healthy dose of influence from the "New wave of traditional heavy metal music" aka NWOTHM, that was coming out of the UK at the time they started. That movement pulled a lot from guitar heavy rock of the mid to late 70's like Thin Lizzy. That movement spawned many great bands and the most famous being Iron maiden. Iron maiden was a huge influence on Metallica, especially in the melodic guitar leads, solos, and twin guitars. Metallica maintained that melodic guitar work on the top of the heavy thrash base they were part of. After their fourth album they went on to play more bare bones heavy rock (for better or worse) for a good 25 years before starting to slip some of their metal roots back into their music recently.

@@independenceltd. lol, I am so so used to listening to the NWOTHM, I accidently put that instead of NWOBHM haha. So if anyone here is wondering, The New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM) is a modern movement of young bands creating mostly Judas Priest/Maiden style original metal music in the modern day. Big underground scenes are in Greece, Italy, and Canada. There is also a thrash version of this movement that has been going strong for a decade or more. If you write 'NWOTHM full albums' in search you will find a channel that is the GOAT repository for most albums that have come out in the last decade in the movement.

You guys are my favorite reactors because you're musically knowledgeable and know what's going on and level of difficulty or lack thereof. Always enjoy the commentary of smart musicians. You know how to appreciate what's good.

Great reaction guys!! From the same album you should do Master of puppets, considered the best Heavy Metal song ever. Do the lyric video or the a live version (Quebec Magnetic 2009) and take a look to the lyrics. You won't regret!! 🤘🏼🎶
