One thing about farming - you help keep money in motion - Land Auction - always find the price per acre and crop production and sales prices somewhat out of balance - contracting a crop before it's planted to help cover production costs is a good but challenging idea

I love your videos. (I experienced a taste of farming as a teen, in the 70s. I milked 265 cows each morning, and threw 90-pound bales of wet hay up into a stock truck. Was paid $2/hour. Hard, honest work!)

I am sad to say that during the late 70's/early 80's in north Dakota farm auction ads filled the newspapers...songs were written about them, movies made about them...it was a dark time for family farms back then.

I recently found your channel a few weeks ago (thanks RUclips) and I'm fascinated to learn so much about farming. I live in S. central NC in a farming community and watched the farmers do their thing and often wanted to know more about it, and what it takes. You continue to provide the info on much of what I always had questions about, on your channel. You and Grant are very down to Earth, hard working people, that have helped restore my faith in this country's youth and future. Keep up the good work and I'll continue to tune in and support your channel.

As a resident of suburbia I have appreciated understanding a little more about what goes into the production of the food I buy at the supermarket based on what I learn from you and some of the other farm video series. Land auctions, trailer manufacturers, equipment operation and maintenance, animal husbandry, etc. I have been to a few livestock auctions that as an observer I found entertaining, but illustrated how little I know about so many things farmers do every day.

Auctions bring out all kinds of emotions. I just hope the land goes to a family that can enjoy farming and keep the tradition going strong. About the fertilizer, it is extremely corrosive and it can rust out everything from your equipment to your truck bed or tailgate really bad if you don’t wash out any residue that falls out of the bags. One time in my life, maybe two, my Dad told me I was full of fertilizer. LOL 😂

    • @alan6832
      @alan6832 2 года назад

I find the spray wax from self serve car washes is excellent at fighting regular corrosion, like from road salt. I figure it might work on fertilizer equipment too if you can get it into such a car wash or buy such a wax and use it in a home pressure washer in place of detergent. I think they sell wax in trigger sprayers too for smaller scale work. And tire shine protects mufflers.

I think that Bill Gates is buying all the farm land in the USA. Like Amazon`Bezos once did and is still doing, destroying the little enterprises that is, Gates will destroy the little farmers. One day in the future there will be a total dependancy towards these oligarchs.

Land sales bring out mixed feelings and me too. Sad for the family that couldn't make it go it had to sell off the land, but happy for the new family starting a new life with hopefully successful plan. Happy for alliance sale that remains private and not corporate. I enjoy your channel so much as it brings back so many memories of my life is a farm boy. The patriarch of the family that I was living with on the farm in upstate New York is 94 years old and riddled with diabetes. He's basically blind and has neuropathy in his legs and hands. But he is a farmer and he still does his chores. He's retired for the military and has 1954 army jeep that he still takes down to the pasture and just drives around, LOL, with his blind self. He says he's only bumped into a couple of trees. This man is honestly a riot he's a fire plug. And his mind is still sharp as a tack. I talked with him a couple of months ago and he said, Johnny I'm 90% eating up by diabetes and 10% raising hell. LOL! I love my foster Pops. He took real good care of me as and at risk teenager and was able to keep me on this edge of sanity teaching me to love what it is to work a farm. I loved mucking the stalls. I loved riding Daisy. I loved Roundup. I loved loved loved riding fence. The farm is a great place to learn life's lessons.

Yes, auctions are filled with many different emotions. I am not a farmer but I worked on some relatives' farms during the summer when in high school and then in university. At Uncle Freddy's farm auction I got a chance to walk around the granaries and reflect away from the crowd. I had lots of memories. I was surprised at some of my emotions as I walked by myself. Most of the equipment that I had worked with had been upgraded and traded in for new. At the end of the auction, Uncle Freddy got a chance to say a few words before his "Moon Rocket" modified tractor was auctioned off as the last auction item. He said it was his turn for his auction. He talked about the cycle of life. He was a successful farmer. I could never have delivered a speech like his. It was so matter of fact. Then "Moon Rocket" was auctioned off. Uncle Freddy loved taking his modified tractor all around the Western Prairies and to the big tractor pull in Louisville. The tractor was auctioned off and even Uncle Freddy did not know that his five girls had decided to buy the tractor secretly. Moon Rocket is now part of the Western Development Museum and it gets displayed in various museums around Saskatchewan. By the way, when Moon Rocket was started up for one last time before bids were taken, a modified diesel tractor makes a LOT of smoke and fuss before it gets running properly. One neighbour saw the smoke and he came over because he thought there was a big fire. Remember the circle of life, . . . two years later I was a honorary pallbearer at Uncle Freddy's memorial service. At the end of the service they showed "Moon Rocket" doing a full pull during a tractor pull and the announcer at the fair exclaiming, "Way to go Freddy!" It was a nice ending as we filed out of the sanctuary into the reception hall. . . . oh the memories. 🤔

My grandmother's farm was just auctioned two months ago. Was happy to hear the winning bidder was a second cousin, so the land can stay in the family. In Nebraska my family has three different homestead tracts that have only ever been in our family. My third-great grandpa is buried nearby, with his heavily worn grave marker in German. Proud to be a Nebraska native.

I spend a lot of time looking at businesses. And the economics of farming look challenging. Capital intensive. Land is expensive. And the machinery. And you produce a commodity that is subject to the vicissitudes of market forces.
On the other hand, it looks fun. You have the outdoors, the machinery, you have all that technology at your fingertips. There is more to life than ROIC.

Farming on the scale Laura, Grant and their families are doing - if 7 or 8 digit purchase prices give you pause - you are in the wrong business. Most purchases, equipment, seed, fertilizer, land, irrigation etc. etc. etc. will all be running in the six and seven digit range on a continuing basis. Farming is a business and if you get sticker shock you are in the wrong business.

When a piece of land or equipment sells for so much above what it is worth it has the effect of infecting others to sell their land and equipment for as much or more than its worth. Then no one can do anything. This should be illegal or declared illegal.

Thanks for the auction trip. Hopefully the land was bought by local independent farmers.

if it's anything like here in Australia there's getting less and less family owned farms all the big corporations are coming in and buying everything they can especially overseas companies driving the prices up so ordinary small farmers have no chance of been able to buy any land to expand their properties family owned farms is a dying industry

I've never seen land sold by the lump sum price, ice always seen it sold by price per acre (you still buy entire pieces)

The auction was interesting and reminds me of a large area of farm land southeast of where I live that is being developed. Where I used to live the farmers retired and got a nice amount of money to retire on. I used to go to church and school with their kids. It's built up now. A large nursery is now a business park. It's the end of an era.

Very interesting video Laura...didn't realize farm land was so expensive...or how wealthy some farmers are...I have always been a fan of Willie's farm aid show which suggest that many farmers are hurting financially ... anyway.. always enjoy and appreciate the content of your videos Laura...keep up the great work....Best farm channel on RUclips!

Farmers churn money in massive quantities - the costs for land, seed, fertilizer, equipment, irrigation and hundreds of other things necessary to continue in business take away most of the revenue that is realized when the crop is sold - the profit is what, if anything , is left over and it is generally very small considering what was invested to earn it.

That would be fun to go to such a large-scale land auction. That sounds like a lot of money, and it is, but that land also produces very well.

They just sold 150 Acre Farm in Lancaster Pennsylvania just shy of $4000000. It was already preserved how can you ever pay for a farm like that?
