Can autopilot make robo taxis drive themselves in the UK? Tesla's BIG NEWS - but outside the US?

  • Exciting news from Tesla! Not only have they launched Full Self Driving as a finished product, they are going to unveil fully automated "Robo Taxis".
    But what does this mean in the UK? I have tested Autopilot quite a few times and been disappointed. Lots of people use Tesla as a taxi, but I don't think they drive themselves. Lets try it out and see how steep a hill Tesla still have to climb in the UK.

    Being from Vancouver I enjoy your videos. Autopilot is not designed to drive in city streets. FSD (supervised) can drive on streets with no markings in North America and I’m positive once it gets the ok in the UK it will work just fine right away!

      @justgetatesla  Месяц назад +2

      I’m sure it will as well! Our problem is the global regulations don’t like autonomy. So even if they approve a loosening of the rules later in the year it will still be a long way from what you enjoy in North America.

    I think the roads without lines on them will be no problem when we get the FSD Supervised version. If you look at any of Dirty Tesla's videos, he drives on dirt roads, which would be similar in terms of no road markings. The car would keep to the correct side of the road. If you also watch any videos from Chuck Cook, Whole Mars Catalog and again Dirty Tesla, navigating around parked cars won't be an issue either. The challenge with the UK version is that it's not any where near v12. Roundabouts don't appear to be that bad in the US but their roundabouts aren't like ours

      Just back from a biztrip to the US and took the opportunity to take a Model Y out with FSD 12.
      My passenger didn't believe that I wasn't driving. Amazing to get into a car in a strange city and just let the car drive, that would be a perfect hire car scenario.
      The only time I took over was a decision to change route due to traffic and I had a destination set as a Starbucks and it wanted to go into the drive through lane but we didn't want coffee, it was just a route. 😁
      It was impressive and felt very confident.

    I guess it was a laugh to show the difference between the best we can get out of Autopilot vs. "FSD supervised" which is looking pretty good now. I'm 1500 miles into my MYLR ownership and I'm still a bit unsure about Autyopilot lane keeping. I sometimes forget Autopiliot is not on and steering for me leading to me jerking the steering wheel to keep the car in lane. And then lane changing and having to disable Autopilot for some manoeuvres (e.g. dual carriage way roundabouts) are operations I have not yet learned to make smoothly all the time. I start to wonder if I am better off just using the traffic aware cruise control. I will practice some more.

    Enjoyed the video 🙂. What you didn't mention, which I think is really important is that, from what I understand, Tesla abandoned their FSD software in the USA and invested in a massive AI computer (perhaps a couple of years ago?). They then got it watch millions of videos sent from Teslas and told it to learn to drive. In one year, it made more progress than the old system did in all the time they have been developing it. This is why they've been able to move to the supervised version. My view is that this ground up system is just going to get better and better, and quickly too, just like all other AI based tech. The amazing thing about it l that they never told the AI anything about what was going on, so it has no idea what a white line is, or a speed sign. It's worked it out all on it's own. This approach should mean white lines are not needed for it to work, which is definitely needed for the UK like you mentioned!

  • @Rockdj3833
    @Rockdj3833 Месяц назад

    The white lines not being maintained is a real problem, but even worse when trying to use autopilot. We have a long way to go in the UK to catch up with the Americans, but then they don’t have the tight narrow roads that we have, so, unfortunately, it’ll be a while before we’re seeing robotaxis on UK roads.

    A few American viewers have said “that isn’t FSD”. Correct - that is the point. No FSD in the world outside North America. Google “Tesla Driver” and watch his videos. “FSD” in the UK. Or watch my own drive in a Model S with “FSD”. In town it is autopilot with added “stop light recognition” which is pointless. That is it. All we have. So in the UK, my video is correct - this is our experience.
    I welcome all viewers and subscribers! But please, American friends. Watch the video. I specifically and explicitly explain why what you have isn’t what everyone else has. Your FSD is not our “FSD”. Nor do I claim our FSD or my video is relevant in your country. But just because you have FSD Supervised doesn’t mean anyone else has. Tesla sell “FSD” here and it is an absolute joke compared to yours. Would you pay £6,400” for a system which wants to stop at a green traffic light? Because that’s what FSD does here.
