I have been driving for over 45 years, until the last 15 years or so you never knew which side the indicators and wipers were on, I once had a car where the indicator switch was on the dashboard, it was a real pain for a few drives but you soon got used to it. I’m sure the buttons are the same.
Test drove the new M3 dual motor and was very impressed. I adjusted to no stalks very quickly and can't wait for my new Tesla to be delivered. The whining about no stalks is truly ridiculous.
Had indicator switch on the dashboard on my Caterham and never had a issue with it. Mind you have other compromises with one, so it's just another to the list lol.
@@garden-Railway I thought this would be an issue but it really isn't. Exiting a roundabout is always the same button, no decisions to be made, so as you enter I just have my thumb already on the button to exit. Really not an issue when you get used to it.
Hi Ian. Thanks for this. I'm listening to you about the lack of stalks and thanks to you, I'm sold. I was saying that I won't be buying a new Tesla MY Juniper because it doesn't have stalks but after watching this, I feel much more happy about the Tesla decision to remove them. Good on ya mate.
Great review, thanks! Phenomenal refresh of an absolutely outstanding EV - love mine so much, best I’ve owned, by far. No stalks, no problem at all 🎉🎉🎉
I am from New Zealand and I enjoy your in-depth and interesting commentary. I like the way that you call it as it is. I'm still ice, but am looking forward to the day that I will buy my first Tesla 3 Highland. Have driven them often, and think they are amazing technology that just works every time, and charging etc.
Buttons on steering wheel are likely better in straight lines but I'm not convinced they're better for roundabouts or tight turns. I'd need a test drive.
Hi Ian, thanks for the ❤️. Some methods of holding and using steering wheels date back to the very early days when steering wheels were mounted more horizontally and also before power steering was widely adopted. The methods some of us were taught are not so essential these days. I did have the engine cut out on me me once when driving - going round a sharp corner of course. The car lost the power steering and the force required to control the car was a shock. My current diesel has electrically operated steering and indeed can take over if it detects a front wheel skid. These days reliability is much better than it once was. The main requirement is both hands on the wheel.
!00 % agree with you Ian... I was looking for a bunch of EV brands before I decided to buy myself a Tesla. And the reason for that is exactly like you mentioned. It just works. Everything in the car is just brilliant. It rides wonderfully. And when it comes to charging it can't get any easier. I am an iPhone guy, forced using Android for work. Android and other EV's are useable. iPhone and Tesla are no problems items. They just work. Easy, no fiddling, no thinking. Just sit in it, put in your destination and the car figure it out. Don't miss my Volvo XC 60 2021 at all. Especially not when looking at what I have saved not pumping fuel in the car. Thanks for a great video and thanks for taking the mystery out of the missing stalks, because there are no mystery about it.. Even those buttons just work..
hi i love and watch all your videos. could you please do a video where you discuss your feelings of getting back into your model y after driving the model 3 and decribe the pros and cons between the two. thanks
Hi Ian, something very important I stumbled across. Tesla will be introducing the Apple UWB communication protocol which can be used to replace the much less secure Bluetooth technology currently used. It may be available in the Highland and later the Juniper. That 'D' on the end of the Insurance grouping indicates an insurance concern with the current use of Bluetooth to lock and unlock the vehicles. You might like to look this up and cover it on the channel.
Good review. For me though 1. the led interior lights to me come under the heading of "fluff" nice but of no real use. 2, I would have preferred them to have included a HUD system. 3. Stalks - I would have preferred them to have remained. So I won't be rushing to trade in my Model 3 LR any time soon.
Hi, I've been enjoying your videos, thank you. I picked up the same spec M3 as you're driving in this video on Thursday this week and I'm loving it - the Ultra Red pops. I got used to the indicators during the test drive. I'm looking forward to some longer road trips.
Love my M3LR highland, BUT. The indicators on the wheel is not intuitive. Exit signals on a tighter roundabout or a left followed by an immediate right means the steering wheel is upside down, it's impossible to locate the indicator. Then I feel that acceleration and all is forgiven 🙂
As you say, once your muscle memory kicks in you just get used to it, but I’m just not sure it was a completely necessary change or one that’s an improvement. I would have preferred that they sorted out the automatic wipers, which, I my opinion, are terrible.
The roundabout test. Many of the roundabouts I encountered my steering wheels is between 90-180 degrees when exiting, I can’t see how you can indicate at that angle
You become aware of where the buttons are on the wheel and you're still aware of where they are at any position. Maybe an EV is too hard for some to operate. Probably should have a new driving test for ICE drivers before roadtesting EVs.
I have a highland since last year and I have not really got it to my muscle memory what button to push. Stalks yes but buttons move. The blind spot light is not needed as you have the same in the cameras. I won't look at both places and the camera is more assuring.
My worst muscle memory issue was when I had a Nissan Leaf. With a foot operated parking brake. And the other car had a manual gearbox. Several times I almost pressed the “clutch” pedal in the Leaf 😳
I did s couple of test drives, as I’m considering. I didn’t have any difficulties with indicators on the roundabouts. Technology is amazing, BMW i4 can only produce lots of expensive leather against Tesla’s technology. The only thing I am concerned it’s seats. Are they ok for people with back problems?
Looks excellent. Still gutted it's not hatchback, I don't need the size of a Y but do need a hatchback mostly for the dog. Other than that it's very nice although maybe the screen should turn off if no one is sat in back maybe a protective cover to prevent damage if using rear for storage, as its probably not cheap to replace a cracked screen, both those are super minor issues . Not a fan of lightbars in any car even big mercs , many think its luxurious i think its tacky, gimiky and pointless , but unfortunately its the trend in many cars.
Another great video thx. When you are using a selfie stick and moving quickly, please go more slowly. I have something similar to epilepsy and I feel a bit sick and have to Lowe my eyes and/ or look away. Pretty rare for you but pretty important for people like me. Thx.
I think this is my favorite Tesla model. Just the right size and all the features for long distance “wafting”. Performance is not something I’m looking for in a car. I need something that gets me from A to B in the 1000 km range without feeling knackered after driving.
Does the indicator auto cancel work better than your MY? On motorway / dual carriageway, I find my MY lane change auto cancel not work very well and only does 3 flashes.
Hi Ian, nice video. How about this stalkless use case: at the 2nd roundabout, instead of taking the 3rd exit to Aberdeen (A90), take the 2nd exit (at 14:33) to Auchmacoy where the steering wheel is almost upside down, and try using the indicator buttons without moving your sight from the road. I think this would be a challenge for most people and even a bigger challenge for somebody who doesn't know where they're going and decides at the last moment to take that route.
I even think he didnt indicate left to come off the roundabout in that part of the video 🤣 I have a M3 Highland and agree that 95% of the time the indicators are not a problem. It's the small roundabouts in little towns that are.
Stalks can be really tactile and pleasant to use. The mechanical feel with clicks and interlocks. Like not being able to push forward into high beam if the main lights are off. Removing them is just one less interesting thing. There must be a significant reduction in cost. No design, no materials, no tooling, no assembly. Has that been passed on down? I wouldn't fall for it being a break through in usability. It looks awkward as from this angle. Forget indicating, a warning flash of the lights is something needed in a hurry. Searching for a button seems like a potential risk and you might want that mid turn more than a left signal. I do like the new look though. Great Vectra shout out, I remember my Dad cursing those when he had one for a bit.
Oh yes, that Vectra was “fun” 😂 On the stalks, I totally get why people object. But it honestly isn’t a problem, and unless you are a 1 hand at 12 o’clock driver the buttons are to hand

Hi, I moan about no stalks but thinking back once the indicator control was a lever on top of the steering wheel hub and the indicators were semaphore flags that came out of the B pillars .......
It wa my job in my granfathers Morris Eight to turn them on and off when I was six years old. He called them Trafficators. You had to turn them off. No self canceling in those days. No Seat belts, no Speed cameras. No heater in the back, just a vent you opened to let warm air from the engine into the cab. And people moan about no stalks. First world problems.
@@keithdenton8386Hi Keith, yup, I agree. My Dad had a Standard Flying 12, no OEM heater, he added an under dash one. I once cut my finger tips on the spinning fan poking them into the air outlet. Vehicles were lethal back in those days, a solid steel steering column aimed directly at the driver's chest. Heaven help you in a frontal crash.
And another thing, but put me right if I am out of date. The police used to be taught (and teach others) that the steering wheel should be held at 10 to 2, not a quarter to three. Also, when turning the steering wheel they feed it from one hand to the other, and when straightening up, they let the wheel slip through their hands, which are still at 10 to 2.

Finally, a sensible video of a better way to make turn signals and shift gears. On our Model Y after a year, I still mix up right stalk up for reverse, down for forward/drive and push the end for park. Old column shifters were up for park, down one notch for reverse, down a notch for neutral, and all the way down to drive. Actually simpler!
I was driving my Kia E Niro yesterday and most roundabouts needed a quarter turn so to change the indicateor to leave the roundabout I had to let go of the wheel to reach the stalk and change the indicators direction. This is worse than the Tesla idea in my opinion. Tesla removing the stalks, means that you keep your hands on the wheel. Not having to let go to operate other equipment makes sense and is safer. I am test driving one in a few daysto make my decision on my next car. Thanks for your information on the new Tesla Model 3.
Y for the simple fact of being a more versatile car when loading items inside ,nothing to do with size just opening space is easier to manage ,just imagine if the model 3 was a hatchback sales would increase immediately and not to the detriment of the Y but other makes of that car size as I think people struggle with the boot concept
Hi Ian, can't wait to ditch the stalks when the new model Y becomes available. Well picked up, I have been saying for a long while now, legacy make electric cars, Tesla make electric vehicles. There is a world of difference
I wanted to get a model 3, and I wanted the Highland, I can't get over the lack of stalks, I just can't do it. I hope they will have an outbreak of common sense........
@@justgetatesla My local's test drive is 20 minutes on a set route and they don't seem to want to let you have a longer drive. Even you would have to admit that that wouldn't be long enough to start getting used to it. The trouble is I've been doing it 'the old way' for 45 years. I think this could have been a perfect car, but for 2 things, stalks (obviously) and a HUD, and I would be happy to pay for both.
Regarding the indicators- maybe future upgrades will do away with need for human intervention to indicate- surely software can determine need to indicate/ turn off the indicator based on turning of the steering wheel?
If the idicator turned on when the steering wheel was turning, it would be too late. You should indicate some time in advance of turning to signal your intention to do so, not when you are turning which is too late and by that time pointless.
Over exaggeration with the hand movements, my 22 m3 stalks are very close, no need for hooking, just lift your finger and its right there, and who drives with their hands glued to the steering wheel like that, most people let it slide through their hands. Key controls shouldn’t move around whilst you drive. Other than that and that a few have mentioned the boot lid doesn’t open as high as my version ( can hit your head against it) and bjorn mentioned the lights seem worse, it’s better than the older car.
Sorry, your analogy with a clutch pedal doesn’t do it for me. Clutch pedals didn’t move around like these buttons. I’m happy for you that you like it but I drove it and it was awful. Tesla make some great innovations but they’ve gone too far now. Let’s see how many other manufacturers think it’s a good idea.

Post a comment after your test and tell us what you think?
Love my Honda E , but Tesla still has side mirrors!
Model 3 Highland or Model Y Juniper? 😅
Y!!!
True!
If they could just make the Model 3 a hatchback then I'd buy one.
If you know the sequence to press you get a meter on the screen showing the deprecation as you drive.
I only needed that feature on my Volvo diesel. But thanks for promoting my channel and helping pay for my Tesla!
That rear seat foot room is one of the key things that turned me off the Model 3.
Same. It just isn’t big enough for my needs.
I wanted to get a model 3, and I wanted the Highland, I can't get over the lack of stalks, I just can't do it. I hope they will have an outbreak of common sense........
Try it! Then decide
Interesting! I’ve had a couple of normal test drives and it’s been self drive for an hour
I didn’t notice the boot opening issue. Wasn’t a problem for me, may be for others
I’ve called it the EV iPhone. Android is also available…
Tesla 3 is so economycal car
I miss Windows Phone.
Windows Mobile before it. And Windows CE before that…
Oh dear…
but us poor cannot afford a tesla
I hear you. Neither could I for about a decade
Mg4 are good
but mg4 Not full self driving like tesla @@GameWithViiP3R
It a wonderfully technological car but it does appear to be totally soulless. Utter boredom after a year of ownership.
I've owned Tesla since 2019. Even today I still look forward to driving it.
Yes, no pushing pedals at every corner, the smell of the exhaust, the smell of petrol at the pump, oil on the floor.... There's a lot to miss.
