    Hey, everyone here is a link to view and comment on the PowerPoint slides. Enjoy. Also, timestamps and corrections are below: drive.google.com/file/d/1bg3wA54Z8a1qrNOzqKiRtkyUiyF3NKOJ/view?usp=sharing
    Here are the corrections (errata):
    1) 6:43 the voice-over says, "your abilities accrue 1.3x more damage than the damage they produce" when I meant to say 1.3x more threat than the damage they produce.
    2) 9:34 on the "Threat Generated by Damage" slide, the Defensive Stance example text says "Battle Stance modifier" in it instead of "Defensive Stance modifier"
    3) 14:48 the text and voice-over, I say that shaman's Grace of Air totem reduces threat, when it should be Tranquil Air totem
    4) 23:44 the voice-over says that crushing blows only come from enemies 4 levels above you. The correct number for Classic is 3 levels above you (it was changed to 4 in WotLK).

    So so SO many people who don’t tank need to watch this. Any time you try to explain to people about allowing the tank to gain some threat first, they instantly default to claiming you just suck at tanking and they should be able to max unload immediately or else you just can’t handle their elite-ness. I wish more people would take the time to understand systems like this, because when the group allows the tank to do its job, the instances are smooth and everyone has a good time. A night and day difference.

      thank you for this, this is my first day tanking and people just attack a mob as soon as i run up to it, before I even do damage. People keep doing things to make my job harder but I thought I just sucked. my first dungeon I was having trouble keeping threat the first half of the dungeon until I noticed there was a sundering on a mob I didnt attack yet. I look and see there is an UNDEAD warrior in my group and I ask him if hes been using it and he says Yes as much as I can i use all my rage on it, im new to warrior but i thought he was joking! he wasnt! He also ran up with me and thunder clapped everytime. Havent had that problem again but its funny my first dungeon was another warrior unknowingly competing with me for threat. Now I mostly just have hunters that attack a mob as im running up to it. Then when they pull aggro, they RUN ALL THE WAY AWAY instead of towards me, which is impossible to fix because id have to chase after the mob while keeping aggro on everything else. Then 2 people blamed me and were toxic af so since then Im always group leader so I dont have to take crap from people who just want to be toxic to someone while im doing the right thing

    Basic basic basic tips for everyone grouping classic:
    Dps: wait a few seconds for the tank to build threat (and rage)
    Tanks: watch the full group, not just what’s in front of you, and watch the healer’s mana
    Healer: don’t stand in melee range when healing or it increases your threat, and let dps die if it means saving scraps of mana for the tank.

    Something warriors can do on pulls: after you entered combat by doing a range pull use Bloodrage & Battle Shout. That will give you some additional threat right from the beginning and may save your healer some trouble if he/she used a HoT on you too early. Edit: same goes for druids - HoT yourself up before you starfire your target.

  • @KO_EN
    @KO_EN 5 лет назад +187

    Biggest issue being having to explain all this every time you find yourself in a PUG with clueless dps that don't have a threat meter. But instead only care about being on top of their only addon, the dps meter. They start attacking as soon as you fire your bow to pull, they don't attack the marked targets and they aren't paying attention to what's around them and therefor pull extra packs. And then blame their deaths on you or the healer. Having to type it all out in a simple enough way for them to understand it, keeping their attention for all that time without them just spamming "go go go" in chat. It's often very infuriating. Being able to stay calm as a tank, having tons of patience and being able to communicate well is very important.

    • @user-bx4fk5nb5t
      @user-bx4fk5nb5t 5 лет назад +32

      That's why you let them die. Just keep the healer alive. Once that DPS dies 3 or 4 times they will learn dead dps=zero dps.

      I was a tank from vanilla through wrath. I had all instructions on macro. It had kill order, cc, threat reminders and that if they didn't want to follow directions they could die or get another tank. Since as a tank you could have a group instantly they usually followed the rules since they knew I could walk and they might not find another tank for hours while I completed 2 dungeons in the meantime.

    I remember when Battle Shout's threat was not divided by the number of enemy mobs. My guild used it on Phase 1 Nefarian, trivializing the phase. We all stacked up on the tanks while they just spammed Battle Shout, producing enough threat to hold aggro on all the mobs. Battle Shout was nerfed just a few weeks later.

    Great video, well put together and loaded with good tips. One significant correction however - Crushing Blows. Prior to 3.0, Crushing Blows could occur if you were fighting a mob only 3 or more levels above you, not 4 or more. So in Vanilla and TBC, raid bosses (effectively level 63 & 73, respectively) could still Crushing Blow max level tanks unless the tanks pushed crushes off the hit table with avoidance percentage. 3.0 increased the level gap to 4 levels before crushes came back onto the table to reduce the importance of avoidance, which was a significant buff for Feral Tanks in end-game viability.

    Very nice, generally detailed guide. One critical omission though (at least I can't find it), is that you don't explain *how taunt works*. To quote wowwiki: "(Taunt) is a single target debuff which forces the mob to attack the warrior for three seconds, generating enough threat so the warrior matches the current top entry in the mob's aggro list." This knowledge is vital. When you taunt, you MATCH the CURRENT top threat, and it's forced to attack you for 3 seconds. If the previous top keeps producing more threat than you, you might lose aggro again (at 110%/130%) after those 3 seconds.

    • @avienated

  • @solitaryinvoker9977

    Really nice video and great initiative.
    It would be awesome if you made more and went into more details. Maybe make a video for each of the 4 tank classes and how they play out and operate? I'm not complaining here, I'm just saying it would be really appreciated since you hardly spoke of Paladins and Shamans at all compared to how much time you spend on Warriors and Druids. And even Druids didn't get so much attention there when it came to how abilities worked. :-)
    On the Defensive parts I would have liked if you had mentioned how Paladins have in talents 30% increased block value and Shamans have 25% increased block value, which are important. Also there is a trick for the Druid tank where you let a Warrior momentarily taunt the boss off you, jump out of bear form to cast Barkskin, then jump back into Bear form and taunt the boss back, making you have an amazing mitigation-or-"oh shit"-tool with a mere 1 minute cooldown! Insane...That will be of use several times during the same raid boss fight...
    On Private Servers, Paladin's can use the /sit function to keep a 100% upkeep of Redoubt, regardless of the amount of mobs. /sit would also proc Reckoning, so sitting is a significant mitigation and threat boost for the paladin. Especially since Paladin has 30% increased block value in talents. And that also works in raid encounters and raid bosses. As long as the Paladin is above like 70% health give or take depending on gear and consumables/buffs. A crit wont kill a tank on a raid boss if at high percentage healthpool, and since the paladin will be defence capped, the only crits received will be controlled by the paladin.
    Only problem is, in the Classic demo, /sit wouldn't proc Redoubt, so we'll have to see if that becomes possible once Classic launches. If it's possible at Classic launch, then the Paladin will have complete avoidance/blocking throughout the entire boss fight, as long as the Paladin soaks a crit every 8-10 seconds.
    In the beginning you mentioned that Druids had amazing singletarget threat. That's of course correct, especially so if you add the Manual Crowd Pummeler weapon into the mix, but the reason why you use them so much on trash is mainly because they also have pretty good AoE threat. It's not anywhere near as good as Paladin AoE threat, but it's still noticeably better AoE threat than Warriors.
    A thing to mind during the Power Gains part, is while on trash and in dungeons for Druid where Furor/Wolfshide Helm and powershifting for Rage dumping threat can be used, but that only works outside of raid bosses to my knowledge.
    About taunting. You wrote that Warriors among many other cooldowns also have challenging Shout for AoE Taunting cooldown, but you only mentioned Barkskin and Healing for the Druid. But Druids have Challenging Roar. You also mentioned Warriors having Bloodrage but you didn't mention that Druids have Enrage. You also didn't mention that Paladins have Divine Shield/Divine Protection and Lay on Hands, which all have their uses for tanking cooldowns. Such as removing Debuffs.
    And Paladins do have an ability that can be used for taunting. if you macro a 'target targets target cast BoP'-macro you will then have a 3-minute cooldown Blessing of Protection ability that is almost just as easy to use quickly as Taunt is. Only difference is that you press the ability an extra time and it only works if there is only 1 person above your Threat. And unlike Taunt, Blessing of Protection cannot be resisted (Taunt function under spell hit rules, so the Warrior needs spell hit or tier items to reduce the chance for Taunt to be resisted), and it will also work during those raid boss encounters where Taunting doesn't work. Many bosses in raids are Immune to Taunting but no-one is immune to Blessing of Protection unless they already have been bubbled.
    I would also have liked if you had gone into how Paladin and Shaman threat abilities scaled, as you did with Warrior and somewhat with Druid too. I didn't see anything regarding how Seal of Righteousness for tanking works. There is a lot to mind with regards to Seal of Righteousness for threat. Attack Speed, Attack Power (for the white hit), and +Spelldamage and moreso +Holydamage, all change Seal of Righteousness damage and threat in different ways. Also Seal of Righteousness procs works under the same rules as an auto attack, so proc-on-hit effects in gear, and judgement of Light/Wisdom can also proc off of the proc of Seal of Righteousness. Which all makes an interesting theorycrafting point to delve into - fast weapon speed vs slow weapon speed. Item procs and Weapon Speed along with other things gear-related and enchants like Lifesteal or Fiery Weapon enchant which also can proc proc-on-hit effects, aswell as Dragonbreath Chili and certain weapon Oils which can proc off itself and eachother (if one wants to use those) can change the game significantly for a certain class.
    The only Paladin threat ability I see mentioned in the vid and link, is Holy Shield. But Paladin has so much more to consider Threat ability-wise than just Holy Shield. The Seals, Judgement (Judgement of Righteousness, Judgement of the Crusader, and Judgement of Light (because the healing of every melee gives threat to the Paladin) all have significant relevance for Paladin Tanking), Consecration, Exorcism, Holy Wrath, Blessing of Sanctity, (and if /sit works) Redoubt and Reckoning.
    Also a thing to be mindful of is that Druids cannot use Potions, Grenades, and Stratholme Holy Water, while in Bear form. So that is a bonus in favor of Warriors/Paladins/Shamans.
    You wrote/said Grace of Air totem when you spoke of threat reducing abilities. It's Tranquil Air totem that reduces threat.
    And regarding the Paladin having a finite mana bar, and how that is considered a problem. The mana bar only seems to be a big problem to the eyes of those who haven't spend alot of time tanking as a Paladin. First off, consider how the period of a 5-min bossfight has certain points of importance, tankwise. Like for example how establishing Aggro is most often just a thing for the first 10-30 seconds of the fight. Past that, the Tank can afford to not have max threat because of already having established the dominance of threat. A Paladin wont need to use Consecration off cooldown throughout the entire fight. Only in the beginning 10-30 seconds of the Fight. And Consecration is the high mana spendage ability of the Paladin. Apart from the first 10-30 seconds, the Paladin wont need to spend all that much mana while tanking. Also consider consumables like Demonic Runes. Including that there is an item called "Black Grasp of the Destroyer" which gives you mana back on melee hit, aswell as also considering Judgement of Wisdom, both of which increase in effectiveness with faster weaponspeed and extra hit proc effects.
    Would be awesome if you made a vid for each tank class, delving into them each in detail :-)

There are a few videos from that time where they showed how to bypass that bug. This bug was first fixed during TBC where /sit again could proc these effects in the normal way that it used to work. • @SirPunch2Face
      @SirPunch2Face 4 года назад +4

      @@omarlozano9374 They're not bad main tanks, though. Early on, damage mitigation is often the most important thing for tanks because your healers usually aren't very geared and your DPS will also be low. Once people start to get gear, though, threat generation becomes much more important to focus on than damage mitigation. With tanking, that's a trade-off. Typically, the higher your mitigation, the lower your threat and vice versa.
      That's the reason that a lot of warriors will be running around (later in the game) a very large portion of the time, outside of very high damage encounters or situations, dual wielding as fury spec with a couple points in protection. Doing that means your DPS can do more damage without pulling aggro, shortening the fight, but it also then puts them back to where they can be crit and hit with crushing blows, and they will always have less damage reduction than a druid even if the druid is wearing threat generation gear. Even then, the single target threat generation is usually better with a bear than anything a warrior can do unless the warrior is geared with the best stuff available in the game.
      So basically, druids are great main tanks on any content at every level with the exception of 2-3 fights later on in the game, though still capable even on those. You should go watch a couple Skarm videos where he talks about bear tanking and how underrated it is going all the way back to vanilla. He has main tanked every raid boss encounter on private servers (granted, they aren't identical to classic) with both a warrior and a druid, everything from Lucifron in MC to Kel'Thuzad in Naxx.

    Nice guide! All warriors should be able to tank if asked to, it's not that hard.
    Some additional tips not mentioned:
    1. Save your resources! Adding threat to mobs that are about to die is utterly pointless. If you can you want to have a full rage bar before every pull for shouts/high initial threat. It will boost clearspeed significantly and make every pull really safe.
    2. Make a macro that toggles autoattack every time you tab to a new target. A super simple macro that will make tanking a walk in the park. You can greatly increase your tanking efficiency with various macros if so inclined, but that is the only one required.
    3. You don't necessarily have to tank the whole pack. If the skull is a squishy clothie that dies quickly or does little damage to a dps warr/rogue you might wanna leave it alone and focus on more important targets

    Tanks are going to have it rough in Classic. The current state of Wow is to race through a linear instance and complete ASAP. Classic requires a slightly more thoughtful approach. DPS visiting from the current state of Wow just wont understand why the tank keeps getting them killed.

    • @jonpate2456
      @jonpate2456 5 лет назад

      Thunderfury is going to be essential in Classic Wow. Without it, I can see good dps having to hold off because of threat. I think people are little more organized for focusing targets, even in 5 man dungeons. If the tank loses threat on a mob, can taunt it back over. Any more than that and it's going to get pulled. This is just going off memory though, maybe things are different in private servers.

      Exactly. I remember playing back in olde Vanilla days! It was essential to take it slow and crowd control, or wipe. Dps would constantly masturbate the "spacebar" to help control the desire to go go go! So, you would see alot of dps jumping around all the time, but they knew it had to be that way or wipe the group. It will take alot of learning if Classic is true to the way it was back in the day. Methodical.

      @@jonpate2456 It's no essential. As you mention, dps needs to throttle itself, that's what makes a good dps and not a dead dps. If you find a dps in your team brags about pulling agro away from tank, then it's time to educate or remove said dps.

Gives a rather interesting perspective as to how the game has progressed and evolved the last years when it's clearly assumed people don't know these things any longer. When BFA started I did hope to see a few things become challenging again, but it's generally not been except for a rare few times and those are usually in the timewalking dungeons when older content was assumed to be AoE fests as most anything is today.

    Hunters with an owl/bat/carrion bird can provide a lot of additional mitigation by using Screech. Its basically demoralizing shout that stacks with DS. It generates a lot if aggro, tho, so watch your pet's health.
    Personally of the 3, I prefer Carrion Birds, specifically Spiteflayer(has a 1.2 attack speed) from the Blasted Lands. Carrion Birds have no dps penalties, an armor bonus, have access to both bite and claw for dumping Focus, have Screech to replace Claw when it's safe to debuff, and eat fish, which is much much cheaper than the Meat only diets of Owls

    Thx for the basics. There is only one thing that I missed: Offtanking mobs. In many dungeons in vanilla, I did not hold aggro on the first target (skull) till the end. So I lost aggro, but it didn't matter, because skull died a few seconds later. Either it ran to the casters and died on its way to them, or the melee got hit 1-2 times. It made my life much easier, as I could build up threat on the second in the list and the other mobs. If the group is trustworthy, I could even just stun skull as a warrior and concentrate on the rest of the pack, as the mob dies in the duration of the stun anyways.

    As a tank it’s great to know what is optimal rotation in any given situation, because occasionally you will get some pro in your pug who just loves to point out that you might be 5% less efficient than you could be or sin of sins, you are a total noob because the healer got aggro for a second ten minutes in, causing said healer to sustain that crippling 7% damage. Salt aside, if you are a good tank and people know it, they will continue to push your abilities, as tank I loved this and was one of the great challenges in vanilla. Especially levelling, when you would have a core 10-20 guys you always instanced in, and the chaos was always walking the line but ultimately contained. It’s always the hunters who can’t use their pet properly or the pushy mage trying to get gnomes done in 25 minutes who caused the wipes, ultimately adding many many minutes to the run. All good fun though, no one is so bad in wow these days that they can’t modify their play style to suit the group dynamics, and if they are they quickly get jettisoned.

    Also Druid has basically the same AOE Taunt as warrior has, and something that works similar to bloodrage, and then there is power shifting (+ Wolfshead Helm), which makes sense right before a pull or even right after pulling with moonfire and then going into bear form with a 10 (15) rage, while the moonfire ticks have a 1.3 threat multiplier.

    In my humble opinion it isn't the fact that Paladin's don't have a taunt that makes them not viable as raid tanks. Yes it is partially due to the fact that they run on Mana which is a limited resource but also that there is no gear in the game within rating that is aimed at Paladin tanks. If there was gear they would my opinion be completely viable except for fights like four horsemen where you need to taunt.

      Aren't there fights where the boss drops aggro? Can you pull him off once he does it without a taunt?

      This is what im saying there are certain fights where they still wouldnt be able to but as far as tanking raid trash and some bosses i think they would do ok

      Valid point. Tier gear wasn't aimed toward paladins but the question is why. I think it relates to the previous points.

      Yeah but there aren't that many fights with an agro wipe on the Tank.
      The biggest reason why pallies and druids were not viable tanks was crushing blows. Warriors were the only class that could push crushing blows off the table by using talented shield block.

    I love how he said, "You should play however you want and whatever you want, except you will NEVER get a group unless you're Warrior or Druid." Though realistically, if you're not a Warrior than just give up. Don't you just love Classic WoW?

    Hi I'm currently new to Classic Tanking and wanted to learn and stay informed for smoother runs. First I'm glad I found this video, second thank you for making this in-depth video. Third, at 18:46 in regards of mob marking, is there a macro to be able to mark mobs in a more efficient way?

      You can keybind them. I personally use the numpad, on the right of the keyboard. I find that easy yet out if the way enough so you don't misclick them

    Pulling threat of our tanks back in the day was our favorite game. Forced our tanks to increase their offense. This was back in BC/Wrath tho. :)

    The one change I would like to see is them getting rid of crushing blows. Its a mechanic intended to keep people from cheesing higher level content. But it is a mechanic that would have been game breaking had warriors not had improved shield block. One point in that one talent prevented the game from being broken at release. If warriors hadn't had improved shield block you would have seen crushing blows removed or moved from mobs 3 levels higher to 4 levels higher (which happened in wrath) in the first patch after guilds started end game raiding.
    Crushing blows are a game breaking mechanic that by pure stroke of luck didn't break the game because one class by pure chance had a single talent the negated the mechanic. If you think the devs included improved shield block with the purpose of pushing crushing blows off the table I have a bridge to sell you. It was by total accident that crushing blows didn't break end game entirely.
    Without crushing blows druids and paladins become move viable raid tanks. Druids more so of course.

    As i recall correctly, in 1.12 when you tried to obtain initial threat on mutiple (3+) mobs, u had to use battleshout, as it was bugged (or designed like this dunno..) a little and it generated like 50 threat on every npc multiplied by every friendly target who gained the buff, so in theory if you were able to buff everyone in the party with BS then u generated like 250 threat on each npc u pulled, but demoshout only generated like 50 on each mobs. That 250 threat was almost equals with the threat of 1 sunder as i remember, revenge and shield slam was higher threat but still was a good start at pull.
    Btw make your own group and take mage/hunter/rogue dps-ers to CC 1-2 npcs all the time, it helps a lot if u only need to worry about 2-3 npcs not 5, and dont forget to remind ppl to give enough time for the tank to gain threat. in vanilla as a dps you cannot go full ham nuke at the begining of the fight, especially if the tank has to swap target to make sure the healer wont get aggro.
    And dont forget to take healers with talented threat reduce, later on when u will have proper weapon and gear it wont really matter, but in questing greens / blues it can couse trouble when the healer starts to burst heal without any threat reduction at pull, priests are the bests if they use Fade properly, that spell is amazing at pull :)

    I´m one old returning player. Thinking about taking the task of tanking with a Warrior, but after your excellent video i´m not sure i´m skilled enough=D Well a Warrior should be fun to PVP with at least. Raided with a Hunter in Vanilla.

    Hi! Not bad. All of the information provided is correct and needed, just a bunch left out. Why not use target my target's target? This can be easier than skull x. Also, most of classic dungeons have 5 or more mobs. As a tank I cannot focus on x but must spread attacks around. Finally, tanking is all about when things go sideways. What do you do when the mage pulls aggro? What do you do when a level 60 mage is in a group with a level 40 tank? Having a large range of levels is much easier to have in classic because there is no dungeon finder.
