- The Grand Knockout Tournament (colloquially also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event which was shown on British television on 19 June 1987. It followed the format of It's a Knockout (the British version of Jeux Sans Frontieres), a slapstick TV gameshow which was broadcast in the UK until 1982.
The event was staged on the lakeside lawn of the Alton Towers stately home-cum-theme park. However, the event used its own specially created immersing set, meaning that the location was not very recognisable in the TV broadcast.
Although regarded as a failure, a similar show (without royal involvement) was made the following year at Walt Disney World in Florida, featuring teams of celebrities representing the UK, USA, and Australia.
[edit] SynopsisThe show featured members of the British Royal Family alongside various sporting and showbiz celebrities. The celebrities included:
Jane Seymour
John Travolta
Mel Smith
Christopher Reeve
Michael Palin
Ben Cross
Sheena Easton
Barbara Windsor
Tom Jones
Fiona Fullerton
Meat Loaf
George Lazenby
Kevin Kline
John Cleese
Rowan Atkinson
Cliff Richard
Toyah Wilcox
Gary Lineker
Duncan Goodhew
Emlyn Hughes
Margot Kidder
Helen Shaver
Michael Brandon
Anthony Andrews
Jenny Agutter
Jennifer O'Neill
Anneka Rice
Aled Jones
Tessa Sanderson
Paul Daniels
The show was conceived and organised by Prince Edward, who had been keen to develop a career in TV and theatre after he left the Royal Marines. The show featured Prince Edward, the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of York as non participating team captains, each of whom supported a different charity. The show was hosted by Stuart Hall, Les Dawson and Su Pollard. The contestants competed in ridiculous and somewhat humiliating games; for example in one round they dress up as giant vegetables and throw fake hams at each other. Media coverage on BBC Radio 1 was provided by Mike Smith (The Breakfast Show) and Steve Wright (The Radio 1 Roadshow). The show was produced by Alan Walsh.
Ya know, there's been a lot of slagging this off over the years, but after actually watching it for the first time ever, I see a well-organised piece of fun, for a good cause, with celebrities who didn't take themselves too seriously and without an ego in sight. Days before 9/11, reality TV, realistically violent cinema and obscenity-laden entertainment, we should look back on them with fondness, not cynicism.
Just my humble opinion, for what it's worth.
Not the celebrities that are the issue.
The Royal Family are not celebrities, despite what that turd, Meghan Markle, thinks. That’s the problem.
Completely agree Mr Neil
@@lizziebkennedy7505 it kind of was or did you not know Stuart Hall is a sex offender
The press were, and even more so now are determined to call it the "darkest day in royal history" (Daily Mail). So, this is darker than a few other 'dark days'?!
Strange that so many people dislike this.
The royals and a load of celebrities coming together and doing something fun for charity. It's the same idea as those skits that air on red nose day.
Cant wait to see how the Crown depicts this
lmao
They skipped over it 😒
Sam is lucy comming for you on friday
Who else is here after watching the Windsor’s ?
I haven't seen this in maybe twenty years and it's so weird, I still have it memorized. My dad woke me up at midnight when I was like 7 and said, "I found the most hilarious thing on tv. You gotta see this." And we watched the Grand Knockout Tournament together. He later taped it off the tv and my brother and I watched it a bazlion times. So cool seeing it again.
@@yesbruv7141 He might have watched it from another country.
I have a suspicion that if Diana had been involved (she wanted to do it, but was advised against) some people would claim this was the greatest broadcast in the history of British television.
It would have been improper for the future queen to do this
Although I would have liked to see her do it.
cohenhaywood10 do you even know what sycophant or self respect mean? They literally have nothing to do with my comment.
Would she have stopped it being a car crash?
@@alexwong3940 what makes it a car crash?
i saw this back when it aired.
my mother recorded it for me and we watched it over and over and over
and laughed every time!!!
so did everyone we showed it to.
i was devastated when the tape wore out. im beyond thrilled to have found it here so i can share it with my kids.
THANK YOU!!
to everyone who participated in it and made it possible for us to enjoy
Prince Edward got a lot of flack for this at the time. Maybe people weren’t prepared to see members of the RF like this? It’s really good and very well produced. Raised 1.5 million for charities.
I remember watching this when I was young and have been trying to find it for years! Thank you!
Wow 8:09 She's the real deal. Stays completely dignified. Impressive. Hilarious!
I don't care what everyone else says they earned my respect with this
Same here i don't understand the disdain...
Same. Just some good athletic fun for charity.
So many people used to complain that the Royal family were so stuck up and distant, so seeing something like this is really refreshing
Princess Anne knows this is ridiculous and remains dignified.
Lovely to see all the people who gave amusement years ago. We will never see their likes again.
Just a silly bit of fun for charity so why has it gone down in history as a total freaky embarrassment. Only embarrassing as a few of the presenters and contestants have since been accused and found guilty of vile crimes.
And Edward's tantrum
Because it's THE ROYAL FAMILY!!! It's gawkish and excruciating. It's not the Republican National Congress.
@@lizziebkennedy7505 what does American politics have to do with this? You just made yourself look stupid, for starters because there’s no such thing as the Republican National Congress, dip shit.
8:09 The interviewer knew NOT to fuck with Princess Anne. 😳
I really wish Anne was next in line for the crown. 👑👸
It was a bit of fun.. They had some great names helping them. I don't see why people give them such a hard time for it.
This is one of the most astonishing programmes in the history of television. You can't really compare it to anything. Where else do you get Monty Python, John Travolta, Les Dawson, Meatloaf (who cheated), dressed up as vegetables with Prince Andrew? The Queen, it is said, didn't approve. Does it make a mockery of the institution? At the time I enjoyed it and given what happened in the next decade it now seems like innocent fun. Henry XIII would have had a fit.
Henry the 13th? I hope the monarchy dies out before then!
Which just confirms Her Majesty as being extremely wise!
I read the Queen Mother was not happy with this event. 😳
Henry the 13th ?
I don't think it makes a mockery. It's just fun. Jfc let people have fun.
This actually wasn't too bad, it was fun to watch. Was most surprised by Princess Anne, I didn't think she had a sense of humor at all. In the 80s these kinds of celebrity competitions were popular but I can see why Prince Edward got flak for it. Royals are not celebrities, per se, they are royals.
royals are celebrities. they literally invented the genre.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it .Needs to come back on TV in this world lacking true family fun !!!
Yes This was a uk/ uk tv production to promote the uk wacky zany sense of entertainment with the royals in charge
agreed, bunch of cunts .... thank god family fun entertainment has moved on too, see Ant and Dec SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY
True family fun? What a load of nonsense. This was laughed at because it was idiotic. Family fun? Riiight.
This sh*t the only work Travolta could get in late eighties
I remember this in the summer of '87. I thought it was quite fine. Kudos to the members of the royal family who participated. Thank you princess Edward.
What the fuuuuuuck. I'm too young to remember this, and have only discovered it right now. Immense.
Before they introduced Aled Jones, I thought it was Claire Balding.
Same. Thought Aled was a young woman at the start! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
😂😂😂
You're dead right, that was Claire Balding.
Princess Anne is the only Royal who even resembles a Princess.
Edward resembles one much more.
She looks utterly aghast to be involved in such hideoussness.
Forever Changes but she always looks utterly aghast.
@@danielpatrick3761 I think she just looks like that. She was a serious sports lady and loves charity work.
You mean she resembles a horse.
This would be a huge hit if they did it today that’s the irony of it all! 🤣🤣
I remember the show well in 1987 wish I look back with fondness and joy. Me and my family see this show at home in Tilehurst in Reading where we used to live.
There were good intentions behind Royal Knock Out, I just watched it, wasn't an embarrassment at all, all in good fun.
It's nice seeing members of the Royal Family having fun.
And they are distant relatives of mine, so that makes this show more interesting.
***** Exactly...
***** Amen to that.
If we are to have a bunch of parasites ruling us forever more, over the centuries land and money has been passed to them and their extended family so that 50% of OUR land is owned by 30'000 people, but if we are to have one, I will acknowledge that the Queen has done a good job of it. However, I long for the day that we rampage the Establishment and smoke them out of their 14th generation country piles and reclaim the wealth.
It was a bit of fun for charity. How are you related, European or British side?
12:36 "we're waiting for Prince Edward to fire his cannon" ......"one more pull Sir, one more pull !!" oh the innuendo
I was watching this as part of the crowd! Was a good laugh! Good memories!
So this is what everybody has been attacking Prince Edward for. It seems everybody who's anybody joined in and raised money for very valuable causes. If Prince Edward handled the press well, it wouldn't be remembered as a fiasco. They raised 1,000,000 £ (2.5 million £ today) for charity in 1987.That's a very significant amount especially for the 80s. I can't believe people still tease him for this. He was 23 and simply didn't know how to handle the press. People should just let it go.
This is intended light hearted, and it is light hearted. Why all of the negativity about it, over the years. I remember seeing it in the 1980s, and first time I saw the royals being anything other than stuffy and formal. Please give them a bit of slack !
It's quite uncomfortable to see Stuart Hall hosting.
But what joy to see Rowan Atkinson summoning his best Blackadder, alongside Barbara Windsor, to introduce proceedings and then what seems like an LSD-induced scene:
George Lazenby, Gary Lineker, Cliff Richard and Michael Palin jumping around together as overweight guards.
And that's only round 1.
This is madness.
This is genius.
I’ve heard so much about this and how it was so awful - but watching the first 5 seconds and seeing Rowan Atkinson - it can’t be that bad!!!
"We're waiting for Prince Edward to fire his cannon! One more pull Sir! One more pull and it's over! Pop! Gary Linekar's got his skirt caught!"
Sir Rowan, back then
not a Knight.
But 25 years later.
Still funny to watch on film.
I remember reading that Diana wanted to join but Charles wouldn't let her
Wow !!!! This is a very nice and speciak piece of fun !!!! Whisky ridiculising it ? Like it !!! 💪💪💪💪💪❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
RUclips algorithm has a lot to answer for.......I'm now subjected to this after watching the trailer to the crown.......beyond humiliation.
This is hilarious!! Anne and fergie have gone up in my estimation!!!
This was very important. Their PR is so serious
I'm from America. We're stuck with Jersey Shore and such. I just happen to have a fascination with the Royal Family.
This is pure gold
Why is Lord Blackadder impersonating Lord Knock?
6:24 Travolta's thinking "How can I convert these people?"
and isn't it good to see Lineker when he was likeable?
I don’t get many opportunities to say this these days… so I’m going to just take this moment to relish how happy I am to be American…
Such a shame Stuart Hall went rogue....he truly was a funny man....
I rambert this I liked him funny and into classic cars racing. Mum taped this I remember this just revisiting.
This isn't that far removed from Historical records to be fair.
This all got swept right under the rug
Good on them it was charity event
Like an edition of CrimeWatch this show.
I'd like to see a version with Boris Johnson, Theresa May, and all that lot
It’s a shame Charles wasn’t in it for the bants of sibling rivalry!
I'ts gross arrogance that made people think this is embarassing. The only true embarassing part isnt really sarah ferguson acting the way not expected of a member of royal family but after few decades later when prince andrew will be caught up with a sex scandal involving minor girl. People should think about that.
Anyone who thinks this is embarrassing clearly has never seen anything currently on TV. Now, those are the people who should be embarrassed. If they're not swearing, in bed with someone or being crude, they've got nothing.
It was the wrong thing for the wrong time, it could be a hit now
Loved Stuart Nonce's intro. No way was Prince Edward gay. Anne and Fergie look like they know how to have fun
What a Goon Show !
At some point this was broadcast in the US...It was the 1st time I had ever seen Blackadder in any form.
Lol, this is so silly. :D
I remember watching this and wishing the Russians would invade.
And people thought 'Madame Guillotine' was a bad thing.
This was a fantastic show that needs to be revived in europe ag ain
6:24 is that john travolta? bizarre
Yes
yup
If I were Her Majesty The Queen, I'd be embarrassed at this show too.
She was...
Oh Mr. Atkinson why you got this on your record?
This is by far the most bizarre video I have ever watched lool...But hey it was the 80's. I'm so glad Diana didn't go near this mess....although she would of loved to of done it.
You may be right there!
The royal family isn't funny, just dull. They must have given Anne a double portion of oats and a clean stall to get her to do this.
Omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣
She'd have had more fun if she was on a horse jousting but her team did win.
They gave tens of thousands of pounds to Save the Children. That's what they did. Thats all she did it for. That's who she is, it is out of character for her but she cared enormously about that charity. I really feel for her, so was so uncomfortable.
the British press is so BS, always picking on the royals. Poor Fergie with a sore throat
Lo and behold the arrogance of Edward.
How so? What is he, in his teens here?
@@BadWebDiver no. He "owned" the production company that produced this. Afterwards we had a big public tantrum about not getting enough praise. It was in all the papers. It rather overshadowed the actual show.
It's so ghastly , it cannot be taken seriously. By all accounts Princess Anne was not amused and did not really want to participate. Obviously all the obsequious celebrities wanted to be part of it. But, if they did raise money for good causes then I have no quarrel with it; that's why the royals exist. Where did all those dukes come from? GB must have the biggest royal family in the world. But, we don't have to grovel to them, that really is out of the Middle Ages.
in the UK there are royal dukes and non-royal dukes. the non royal dukes can go to the house of lords to vote laws
She must have wanted to participate. I don't think anyone makes Princess Anne do anything she doesn't want to do, except maybe her parents. But since they didn't participate, I doubt they forced her to.
Even George lazenby got a roll inthis
What ever happened to the host presenter of its a Knockout 🙄🤔
26:57 the time limit for knock a knight event
6:04 - Stuart Hall talks to Prince Andrew. Lock up your kids.
wow wtf am I watching lol
This is like a low budget Game of Thrones. Geoff Capes would be the Mountain obviously. Meatloaf(RIP) is The Hound. Aled Jones (RIP?) is Joffrey. Les Dawson (RIP) as Robert Baratheon. Su Pollard as incest loving Cersei.
How much fake ham does Tom Jones (Ned Stark) have? Don’t answer, I already know.
Holy Bleeding Christ is this …..actually happening (or was it?)
Just weird to see John Travolta there.
Yikes
More weird seeing Christopher Reeves and Meat Loaf.
In 87 this the only work goin for Travolta
Apologies to Aled Jones, but I can't help thinking of the evil teenage King Joffrey from Game of Thrones.
Oh my Christ, how embarrassing.
They should do this again
They would never
Only trouble is the only people who would take part would be from TOWIE or Made in Chelsea
Princess Anne 😊
Prince Edward 😐
Sarah Ferguson 🤢
Prince Andrew 🤮
@ 1:14 I bet old Eddie had his way with this one at the auditions.
I'm not sure if that's a girl or a guy
Who's Eddie?
Oh my...
25:24 the ONLY time the red team was not in the lead
What...a....GOON SHOW .....this was ! Jesus fucking Christ...
Jesus wtf 😳. John Travolta and Meatloaf get dragged into this monstrosity of program.
I suppose the Royal Family still had a lot of respect from the people so the celebrities would have been begging to take part. Be different these days with all the ‘scandals’ haha
im only here cuz i saw blackadder
It seems like a different way for them to raise money for charity and also so very british as well.
Hello. What? "Things" can't think. What are you trying to say here, please?
Anne knew this would go down in history as a shit show 🤣
Edit-
I thought that was Nicola Strugeon. Not Aled Jones 🤣
Im surprised Frank Bruno wasnt there.
If Edward and Andrew had worn their codpieces, this would've been more of a success.
mmm
well, this is surreal
Is that Rowan Atkinson? 🤣
I wonder if Stuart Hall and Prince Andrew had a good chat afterwards (wink wink!).
A game show to show the British how Germanic they really are !!!
@ 12:51 Stuart hall's laughs start
A few weirdos all together here , Stuart Hall one of the worst
DONT YOU KNOW WHAT GOOD KNOCKABOUT FUN IS ANYMORE YOUR FROM A DIFFERENT GENERATION IT APPEARS??THIS IS WHEN THERE WAS GOOD OLD FASHIONED FUN ENTERTAINMENT ON TV NOT LIKE TODAYS SARCASTIC HUMOUR AND REALITY RUBBISH LIKE BIG BROTHER AND X FACTOR ETC!!
Missing the point by miles.
stuart Hall , Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris not there ? Still Andrew made up for them .
