  • Today I install and review an ebay boost controller. This is a 2 stage or dual stage boost controller that mimics the Turbo smart dual stage boost controller for less than a fourth the price. They can also be found on Amazon for the same price. But how does it perform? Lets find out! #Steppinwolf

      This is my first time visiting your channel. Have to say that I'm pretty impressed. I actually bought this boost controller about a month ago, but after doing some research I realized that I had no business installing it until I performed an ECU flash that would allow me to up the boost. Otherwise, the xtra boost would register for about a second and the ECU would take it back down to factory settings... I've got a 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman S. I'm 42 and it's been about 15 years since I've fooled around with tuning. My last race car was a decently built N/A "89 Mustang. I'm a car guy, I like ALL makes and models. I made the decision to go with a Mini because it's different and building it would be a challenge. It seems to be that a challenge is an understatement. I've had more trouble upgrading this Mini than I ever had when building any of my Fords, Chevys or even Toyota! YI am so jealous of your "easy to get to" engine bay! Doing anything on Mini requires me to bend in crazy weird ways and blindly loosen and tighten bolts because they are located in spots that are not visible to the naked eye. Take my boost controller. My waste gate is tucked away in a spot that has me not looking forward to installing this. On the upside, everything that I have done so far (full racing exhaust, intake, downpipe, performance ignition coils, performance intercooler) qualified my car for a stage 2 tune through a reputable company in Cali. After the tune my car become somewhat of a pretty fast ride. Now that I am able to control my Air/fuel ratio I can add xtra boost without having to worry about my ECU or burning a whole in my block! Your channel seems to be the place to go for us regular car guys... Thanks!

      Always on a budget over here. 😉 There are a lot of people out there that think you have to use expensive name brand parts to go fast and have fun. I’m just trying to help those who can’t afford those parts. Sometimes the cheaper parts will do the job, sometimes they won’t.

      Hey brother! Stealthys what I’m after too!! I need to get my grill in though. 😂😂. We’ve actually got an old Snow Performance meth kit that I’m wanting to put on but it’s from 2006(never been installed though) and the instructions say it has to run off a MAF signal which I no longer have. Gonna be contacting Snow and seeing if it can be made to work with a MAP sensor signal instead.

    You can run these without the check valve right? Just boost tee between the turbo and actuator, so it slows the signal? or is that not how it works. Cause I've seen them fitted that way before

    To be clear this is NOT an electronic boost controller like the EBAY ads say.
    Its simple 2 side by side Manual boost controllers with a switch that toggles between them.
    It has no protection like proper EBC and is the Worst way to control boost (even worse than just using wastegate spring)
    Not saying its a bad item for on a budget but it is not as advertised dont get confused with something that has 3 port solenoid and micro computer controller boost with closed loop protection.

      Hello steveww07, Thanks for watching! The boost spike occurred before we switched to high boost setting.

      @steveww07 6 лет назад +3

      gotcha, ive got the single version in mine and havent opened it yet, running off the WG for now. Wonder if i should pull the ball/spring just for safety.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  6 лет назад +2

      Honestly if its already hooked up and isn't spiking then you're probably good. Mine seemed to have a fairly stiff spring in it. If i built boost slowly it didn't spike, but when I tried to go harder(more throttle) the ball didn't open fast enough and thats when the spike occurred.

      I’ve got no clue honestly since I never turned it all the way up. If you watch the newer videos you’ll see I ended up having issues with it later on which I believe were caused from water getting in but haven’t taken it apart yet to find out for sure. I’ll probably do an update video on that eventually.

      ok thanks ,i subbed up so ill catch it . im building a 84 twin turbo in the rear corvette street car ,and was considering getting one of those controllers

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  6 лет назад

      Definitely sounds like a fun project. The controller seemed to work fine when I first installed it but I installed it under the hood on the fender knowing that water comes in there when it rains. I’ve been meaning to take it apart and look for possible rust preventing the check ball from moving or something if that nature. Maybe I’ll do that tonight depending on when I get off work. It really needs a follow up to determine if it was environmental or it’s just a piece of shit, lol. In the end I decided to just use the appropriate spring for the boost level I wanted and leave it there. Lasted a day in 12psi before fuel slosh ran the pump dry and broke a ring land. All that is I. The last video I did about a week ago. 🤣

  • @infamousnova

    So the boost controller allowed the boost to come in sooner! With it off it was in at 4000, with it on it came on at 2500rpm. Hmm I think you solved a mystery

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  2 года назад

      No, thats actually not what was happening at all.

    • @infamousnova
      @infamousnova 2 года назад

      @@BadLuckGarage so what happened? How did you get boost at lower rpm around 18:00 mark vs earlier

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  2 года назад

      @@infamousnova The boost controller is always on in every pull i made brother. You cant really "turn off" a mechanical boost controller other than just closing the bleeds off with the adjustment knobs. As I explained in the beginning of the video, the solenoid inside doesn't turn it on or off per say, simply redirects air from one port to the other to allow more or less signal to escape depending on how many clicks out I have whichever valve its using set. As I explained during the test drive, I wasn't flooring it....I was holding it in gear and just testing how much boost was made. So how quickly it built boost on each pull was just a product of how smoothly or quickly I rolled into the throttle and had nothing to do with the boost controller whatsoever. This video was actually made way back when I had the 66mm turbo that was way too small for this engine. That thing always lit off fast as hell but it ran out of steam at high rpm. The 7875 that we installed in the later steppinwolf videos took awhile to build boost....mainly because of the tight stock torque converter I had in that truck.

    • @infamousnova
      @infamousnova 2 года назад

      @@BadLuckGarage yea I believe that's what im experiencing is a tight converter. I was hoping this was a solution for me lol. Im running just on wastegate spring with no boost controller. Mine start making it after 3500 rpm but the converter won't get that high

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  2 года назад

      @@infamousnova Yea brother a stock converter and tons of turbo lag kinda go hand and hand. You need more stall to get you through the rpms where you cant make boost. If you threw a 3200-3500 stall in there it'd feel like a completely different car off the line.
