I am not a drummer but am thinking about learning. By showing the notes and playing along beat by beat, you make it a lot easier to understand. I look at drum kits and wonder how the heck you know what to hit when, but you've done a great job of clearing it up. btw you're never too old to learn. I'm a woman and will be 50 in the spring.
So I finally found someone with the pacience and the technique to teach me and those interested, the unique drum intro to ´We´re An American Band´. Thank you so much for posting Don!!!
Seriously? I was doing that in Junior High 😂 Don is what I cut my teeth on. Then Bonzo. But FIRST was Ron Bushy. For you millennials, that's Iron Butterfly's drummer. The one Ringo copied on his Abbey Road drum solo.
BRILLIANT I have been trying to figure this fill out for the longest time (thought it was triplets). Just found you here love your teaching style and your accent. Cheers from Southern California USA!
How to improvise? Wow...cosmic. That's a hard thing to teach, mate. Everyone does it differently. I guess the key is, the more you know and the more you're able to move between ideas through lots of practice, the better you are at improvising? But then your imagination comes into it as well...a tricky subject to nail indeed! Glad you like the T-Shirt! Might be announcing something soon ;) Rob
My kit is a standard 5 piece. I started out with only 2 cymbals, a ride cymbal and a crash, also a hi-hat. As time went on I added more cymbals. Right now I'm pretty happy with my set up. I don't want/need any more cymbals. Yes, they can be expensive. My cymbals cost more than my kit. I have played in 4 bands over the past 5 years. I'm currently in a cover band.
You're very good at explaining the way Don Brewer was thinking about with substitutions to get back in the groove/pocket. I'm a by the ear player and tend to get ;lost in the techniques even though my profession is technical: writing and developing... go figure, but you really lay it out succinctly even though your accent is grating due to my Irish ancestry, LOL
Doing doing fine without the cowbell - I think you did a great job breaking it down. being a drummer and a big Brewer fan since day one.. Thanks my brother....
you're welcome. I know Don personally and Mel and Marks as well there my buddies. I know it's a shame Marks out but I leave that alone. I saw Grand Funk at the Los Angeles Fourn in 1971 - I bought "On time" when I was in the 7th grade and was hooked. Keep doing your videos and don't pay attention to all the knuckleheads. You rock..
Wow, you're terrific! It looks like you can just about build your own kit. Some have maybe one crash while others have 3 or 4, which I imagine cost a pretty penny. Thanks. Do you play in a band at all?
When thinking about a career as a professional Drummer consider this classic joke first: What's the difference between a Pizza and a Drummer?A Pizza can feed a Family.(Just a suggestion but of course it's YOUR life).

I enjoy how you took the time to break each section down and explained it. well done
My advice to beginner drummers, if this site was around in1968 when I first started fooling around with drums , I would have joined in a heartbeat.
Thank you very much!
Yeah, these videos are so incredibly helpful. Plan to pick out a few to buy in full

Very kind of you to comment, Steve. Thank you!
Thanks Rob, you're not the first to suggest Wolfmother. They're definitely on my list! Thanks for the suggestion, mate.
Great job! Excellent drumming! All the best!
Now I remember why I never gave lessons ;) This riff is so much easier than you make it sound. Kudos to you for having the patience to do this lesson
Great tutorial, I truly appreciate the post! Thanks again for posting.
It's to remind me on a Sunday morning, after a particularly heavy night drinking, of who I am and what I do for a living ;)
Just want to say thank you for this video helped me learn the beginning of American band
Awesome! Thank you.

Thank you very much! :D You're the first person to tell me that.

Great Lesson !! Great Teacher
Wow! nice break down. I don't have any musical talent/skills. Always liked the beginning of that song. Thanks for the explanation.
Glad you enjoyed, Jon!
What a great lesson - thanks mate!
Awesome!
Yeah, I think we've all heard that quote enough now. It's like people that still say "What's UP!!" ;P
Thanks for the support, mate. Have fun tonight!

Thanks for your kind comment! :)
Thank you
You are the best !!! Your drums what model it is????
Nice job.
Thanks, Steve!
@@DrumsTheWord I passed your video on to Don Brewer. I'm sure he will be very flattered
@@stevelarson4625 Thank you. I'd love to know what he thinks!
Can you pretty please do hot for teacher by van halen or the metal by tenacious d. They're great drum songs.

Thanks. Do you play in a band at all?
Thanks for the video! I like your accent, can you open the next video saying "Is it teatime already?"
The second half with the doubles on the kick.... could this also be considered 5/4 time played in triplets?
It would technically contain the same number of notes, but no reader or writer would actually notate it that way.
"If you don't have a cowbell......." Blasphemy ... step away and rethink your drumming career
Famed Producer Bruce Dickenson would be proud. 😂

Just to write an unoriginal comment : " Needs more Cowbell " :D Anyway , great lesson as everytime . Im gonna try this song later. Cheers!
HA! I just wee'd a little bit ;)
yeah thats really cool, something to remind you of what is significant in your life, you need a youtube logo on your other arm :)
Have you never actually watched Don play this live? Where is the open/closed hi hat part?
On the recording. As this is what I'm transcribing.
I just call it triplets (trip-a-let) for the beats.
Like 4/4 time (1 E + Uh)
except Don did not have 2 toms. He always uses just one tom and 2 floor base toms.
Ну ты загрузіл
Is that a drum tattoo on your arm?
Nice, but... I wish you had used your right foot.
:D :D
? :M :B ?
