Hi Daniel, It’s like riding a bike.It seems impossible until you do it,then it’s easy. Try getting the pattern in your head. There’s a piece in this video where I am just playing a paradiddle between the ride cymbal and the snare drum. You can hear the pattern because there are 2 different sounds, try to get that going in your brain, and it does,nt matter which rudiment,it works for them all. Again,(as usual!),not my idea.I saw a video of Sam Woodward with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1964 base most of his solo around this concept of splitting up rudiments between cymbals and drums. Mr Woodyard was pretttttty damn good!. Ian.
For me the paradiddle feeling is very similar to tap-up-down triplets. I used to practice it from triplets to reversed single drag tap -- and it turns into paradiddle when spreading strokes inside.
Spend hours + hours playing them, and try to hold yourself back so you play them much more slowly than your body wants to. And mix 'em up. Do left and right singles, doubles, and triples all at the same time. With some time yo'll amaze yourself how fast, even and interesting you can make then sound. Then, start moving them all over your entire drum kit, including cymbals. That's what Ian does. And don't forget to work on Ian Paice inspired double rolls. Once you pull all that together, you've got almost all elements of an Ian Paice drum solo. He's been my favorite rock drummer, too, since I was 14.
I'm a guitar player and Ritchie Blackmore being my favorite guitarist, Ian Paice is one of my favorite musicians ever. He's 73. Look at him play, how good he is and how he enjoys playing. My hands are so itchy now, this video is so full of energy, which "infects" me in a very good, desirable way. Of course, I would be never ever even close to this performance. But I would "feel" and "live" through what I manage to perform. In the beginning of this video is a great truth. I have seen many drummers. Some professional studio drummers, who can and do play by the notes. However, when I saw some of them performing live with other artists (the drummer, or even worse, the whole rhythm section being just "generic" players) it was often painful. Sure, they did play good. Technically way better than others. But I do miss what I call "feeling". They did not "feel", "live", "perform". They just "do the job". And do it great. But often art is not about perfection. They played as if some artists drew perfect, photograph like paintings. While certainly hard, requiring skill, it is not always what people admire when they are in awe when looking at e.g. Van Gogh. I rather listen to a passionate amateur, who is an active part of the group, not just some "generic instrument". I even do not mind if she/he makes a mistake. What kills it for me is sterility in some players. Ian is certainly NOT one of them.

I was 11 when I came across a Deep Purple record of my father’s collection. The song “Wring That Neck” instantly became my favorite…the whole band sounded fantastic and the drums were thunderous. That’s when my love for rock music and for drumming started. It’s all this man’s fault! :D Now I’m 38 and still a super fan of these gentlemen. Today’s heavy music exists thanks to guys like Mr. Paice, Blackmore and the late Jon Lord. Eternal respect and gratitude to these giants of mankind.
Thank you Mr. Paice. You were the main influence for my dad who was a drummer all through the 60's up until a few years ago when we lost him. I still have all of his original Deep purple vinyl records that he used to practice to and still have his original Ludwig drum set which he said was an exact copy of the one you used when you boys recorded the "Made in Japan" LP. He always said you were the best he had ever heard and whenever he saw you live or on a concert video, he always had a mirror with him to watch your reflection in it to get the right handed view of you playing which I thought was an ingenious idea that he had. He said seeing you playing in a right handed view made all the difference for him. I still remember when he came home with the "Who do we think we are" LP and thought your drums on "Rat Bat Blue" and "Super Trooper" were beyond amazing! Thank you Mr. Paice for being such a wonderful influence for my dad during those happy times of great rock music back in the day". my brothers and I wish you the very best in 2022 and beyond. Thank you sir"
That was purely fantastic. You're probably the only drummer in the world I could listen to for hours without any other music around. Thank you so much for all that tremendous talent you bring into your magnificently brilliant creations and have a wonderful 2022, along with your family and all the musicians you play with.
@@pmxl2004 Good question but I personnally think he doesn't need that bc his playing is a tune by itself. But maybe he is though, only him could tell, maybe in a Q&A or something.
Many thanks for sharing Ian! My dad was a semi pro jazz drummer for decades holding down a full time job to help to keep us kids at the time fed and watered, he even taught part time between gigs. He passed away a few years ago on his 90's but as I was growing up there were a few drummers that he would often mention, the late great Buddy Rich (who I was lucky enough to see play live with his band) and believe it or not your good self in the same sentence. I count my self as fortunate to have seen you play live (unfortunately not with Purple) with Whitesnake and if I recall correctly a gig with Gary More and maybe Don Airey on Keyboard in the 80's. You drumming has lost none of what you did back then, you have a matured instinct behind the kit that shows in the likes of Sina and Yoyoka. It's a real pleasure to see and hear you play Ian.
Thank you for posting this Mr. Paice. You've always been my number one biggest drumming influence from day one when I started playing drums. You are amazing and one of the best.
My respects to the legend that is Ian Paice. You were the first drummer that ever shocked me with his performance and those amazing chops. One of the rare people that keeps true rock alive. Thank you for all your decades of keeping the flame alive. We hope you stick around a lot longer and stay healthy and able till the end. God bless.

August 14, 2024 just saw Deep Purple and Ian Pace played like he was 25 years old. He is such a master at the drums. YES opened for them and Steve Howe was also very, very good. The show was at the Hollywood Hard Rock in Davie Florida… only holds a few thousand people. So honored to see such talent! Catch this show if you can! Depp Purple opened with Highway Star… so cool!
WOW! As an amateur drummer for about 55yrs I think I've always known that most/many drum solos are basically practice routines. PLUS, you are probably my favourite drummer; or at least the one who influenced me the most. Having said that, these clips at the end of the video are probably among the best solos I've EVER heard. And, considering that YOU consider them 'practising', or as near as YOU get to practising, I am in total awe. Thanks for sharing this with us - it's truly made the 1st day of 2022 the best of the year for me so far (haha). Regards Mark in the UK
An absolute legend and thankfully due to his young age when beginning his career, using modern recording methods and the internet his craft and ability will be preserved online forever.
Becouse of you Mr. Paice and Buddy Rich i startet to be a drummer many moons ago. And yes i still love it . Thx a lot for the music, your drumming, and many more. Cheers from germany ✌️🥁✌️
One of the things I have always liked about Paice's drumming is that he's never needed to play with the biggest kit in town or anything like that to sound punchy, powerful and clean at the same time. I've got nothing against big drum kits, of course... provided you actually make us of the whole thing, which far too many drummers just don't do, which makes me ask, 'well, what's the point, then?' And the other thing is how relaxed he normally looks, as if flowing with what he is playing at any given time. With other guys you always see the grimacing faces and the physical performance, as if they were working out rather than playing and you HAD to realise how powerful they are. Well, does that make them sound any better or any stronger? It's a rhetorical question, of course. Thank you so much for sharing this, Sir, long live Deep Purple, and happy 2022 everyone!!
the point to big drum kits was two fold, one it fed the drummers ego, but they were brought out starting with Moon and Baker by the drum manufacturers taking note that the bigger kits attract more buyers and more buyers to buy more drums, so it was smart to give the pro's that wanted them free kits or signing them to contracts with free kits etc. Like everything else in life it's sales.

I hope you get to read this and know how much you have positively influenced my musical life. Thank you for the gift you have given me and many thousands of others who hold you in such high regard.
I love old school drumming, self taught. I’m the same way with ‘practice’, I practiced by live performances from when I was 6. I went on to study music theory and composition, never forgetting drumming, played with a lot of bands, and taught formally at universities, and informally at my own studio; when Covid hit, I started recording tracks upon tracks, whether they were used or not, I just did so my kids would watch them someday. I earned a music PhD at the ripe age of 38. I’m humbled and honored to be able to continue drumming especially after losing my left arm in a horrible freak vehicle accident in late 2020 and as a drummer, it crushed me totally (and for a while I thought my life was over); but I think I’m over the horizon now and have relearned everything, I’m very happy with my drumming still (playing odd time-signatures with one arm is truly a blast I never dreamt of in my wildest dreams). IAN, YOU THE MAN!
It's so awesome. Thank you. As lefty who plays, ive always followed you and tried to emulate your style . didn't realize I basically have been setting up my drums ( drum heights , drum stool height cybal height ) like yourself . I've been playing for 45 years and its alot easier to practice to a fellow southpaw . If you ever move to Cape cod and need a student, im here . Extremely inspirational.
Ian what a fantastic video and insight as to what you do at practice. I love it. Certain sections reminded of John Bonhams live version of Moby Dick in the Song Remains The Same Zeppelin movie. You have always been a big influence and inspiration to me and your closed, single and double stroke rolls have always blown me away. Thank you for posting the video and good day to you!

I was 11 when I came across a Deep Purple record of my father’s collection. The song “Wring That Neck” instantly became my favorite…the whole band sounded fantastic and the drums were thunderous. That’s when my love for rock music and for drumming started. It’s all this man’s fault! :D
Now I’m 38 and still a super fan of these gentlemen.
Thank you so much for all that tremendous talent you bring into your magnificently brilliant creations and have a wonderful 2022, along with your family and all the musicians you play with.
yes, agree
Funny you mention this. My thought question is if in the warmup, is Ian hearing in his mind, a Deep Purple concept or tune?
What a true inspiration and blessing to us fellow drummers❤️🔥
His stick control is absolutely amazing!!
It’s incredible to be able to see this
Ian has always been my hero. Listening to In Rock as a teen I became a fan
Thank you for posting this Mr. Paice. You've always been my number one biggest drumming influence from day one when I started playing drums. You are amazing and one of the best.
Every tone at the more than 50 years in DP you played- thank you for each of them! Happy and healthy New 2022 Ian!
One of the best Drummers in the world! LEGEND IAN!
God bless.
Watching Mr Paice play is like watching an amazing graceful dancer… so much happens in the air when he’s playing… the finesse and power is what it’s all about…. The man is the epitome of THE POCKET!
Although I'm in my late 50's, I'm just realizing how great of a drummer Ian is! Where the hell have I been! Love this guy!
My favourite drummer since 1970. I can and I’m sure a lot of you can name quite a few excellent drummers as I can. But listening/ watching this I’m once again absolutely blown away. Truly incredible drumming as always. And an honest humble man too. A class act in every sense of the word, in my book the best 👌🏻
Ian I followed you through all these years of my life and I think you're the most wonderful drummer ever!
Thanks so much for sharing this footage. Love seeing the ideas flow, and develop. Always that beautiful swing in your phrasing. 🙏🏼
The first time I heard you play in 1975, I listened to Child in time. From that moment on I was hooked and never looked back. When I saw you live in Jan 1976 at the Philadelphia Spectrum I was changed forever. 48 years later I still play and I owe it all to you. You are a true legend and inspired more than you know. from the bottom of my Heart, Thank You!
Now THAT'S what I call practicing..a musician loving their instrument, tuning into their gut, and letting it all spill out.
D.P ... is a stone monument to the history of music ... Rock. The magic of rhythms Ian Paice.
Happy New Year Ian.
Always, Anytime, Anywhere, Enjoy life with Deep Purple and Sir Ian Paice. Good time for you
This is a drum solo! not just a practice. Ian’s drumming is always swinging, punchy and fine.
Hello the great and legendary drummer Mr. Pace! Thank you for your wonderful creativity and art! I grew up listening to your music, as did many of my friends! You are loved all over the world! May God grant you health and long life! Please keep us happy for a very long time! With respect and honor from Russia.
Wow! Still incredible at 73! He definitely didn’t lose his touch.
Mr Ian Paice......I was interested in nothing, then 40 yrs ago I heard someone play speed king.... Wasn't Ritchie or ians screams.... I heard you play and I was like.... That is the best thing I've ever heard..... I became a drummer the next day, on my mums pots😂...... Thank you for giving me the gift of drums and your incredible sound 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏...... Long live the King
He has always had a touch that I've never seen anyone else have on drum set. I could watch him play for hours.
Exactly , for me too
So glad I got to see some of the last show's in Canada back in 2005
An absolute legend and thankfully due to his young age when beginning his career, using modern recording methods and the internet his craft and ability will be preserved online forever.
The influence of the big band drummers is profound. I hear Rich, Bellson, Krupa...so many more.
Maestro ian paice!
💜🔥 #capo 🎶🔝
I'm not a drummer but I can watch Ian play all day. One of the things I always loved about Purple is the jazzy feel, which is evident here.
Becouse of you Mr. Paice and Buddy Rich i startet to be a drummer many moons ago. And yes i still love it . Thx a lot for the music, your drumming, and many more. Cheers from germany ✌️🥁✌️
Thank you for posting this….you are one of the most amazing drummers, ever.
One of the things I have always liked about Paice's drumming is that he's never needed to play with the biggest kit in town or anything like that to sound punchy, powerful and clean at the same time. I've got nothing against big drum kits, of course... provided you actually make us of the whole thing, which far too many drummers just don't do, which makes me ask, 'well, what's the point, then?'
And the other thing is how relaxed he normally looks, as if flowing with what he is playing at any given time.
@@905Alive Absolutely. And it makes perfect sense, by the way: it's a win-win for the brands and for the musicians
This was great! Very cool to watch... and hear, obviously. 🙂
So great legend. Simply the greatest jazz rock drummer of all time.
Always great to see you playing, hands are as clean as ever. Hope you and yours are keeping well, Mr Paice!
Hi Stefan, nice to hear from you.

You are on top of the mountain as a drummer , number one for me.Fantastic concert in Seville ,I was one of the fortunates .Thanks a lot !!
Ian, you call this a routine while for us this is an amazing solo that we'll never be able to play ;-)
ian you are the deep purple in music and your paradiddles are the best of drums, still got it 40 years or so latter!!
Abrazo grande Ian!!!!
The great maestro, mr. Paice… his feel, groove and technique is just magical. Love all your work!!
I've enjoyed this tremendously. Mr. Ian Paice, you have been my drum hero ever since I discovered Deep Purple when I was 16 years old. I haven't played the drums in a long time, but after watching this I MUST do it as soon as possible. Time to finally go back to the old kit. Cheers from Perú.
That's very 'Fireball' when you kick off at about 4:30... Awesome drumming mate!
Love Ian's style. Just a great musical player. His single strokes have always been incredible!
Sweetest artist I know ever had the privilege of working for..
1993-2000
Love you all , true gentlemen....
Wishing you and your family (and your DP family) a very happy and healthy new year, Paicey!
I hardly can await to see DP in concert again.
Greetings from Bavaria!
Paradiddles between ride and snare, great to see you doing those. A true leveler of a rudiment, and so useful. Really enjoyed watching this video, thanks.
Wonderful. I could watch him playing for hours. He’s simply fantastic.
wow
what a fantastic drummer
Maybe the best example of tension and release of tension I have ever seen in a drummer. So may things I picked up just watching this practice routine
Thank you Ian
Ian Paice, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Alan White on and on holy crap. I loved em all and they all had their own style. I was about 15 with a jammin audio system. (Or so I thought). GREAT times and memories too. Linda Lynch I miss you 😘
Gracias Maestro Ian Paice por esta clase gratuita .
He just swings in everything he does. True master. Love the single stroke rolls.
I saw you live in my Hometown Rosenheim /Upper Bavaria/Germany on July 21 ! You gave a Great Sound to youre Drums & Cymbals !👍👍👍 Epic Concert ,for the lots of People at this Day here !
Ian you are my favorite musician and I have followed you since the early days of Deep Purple. I began playing drums at an early age and you have been my idol to this day…50 years later. I hope you get to read this and know how much you have positively influenced my musical life. Thank you for the gift you have given me and many thousands of others who hold you in such high regard.
Ian Paice..Ian Paice , Allright!!! ..Absolutely the best EVER!!!!!!
It is so cool to see you practicing Ian, you are one of my all time favorites, thank you for your music.
Thanks so much! Total legend! thanks Ian, its been a life time of me playing pro drums & you were a big inspiration.
Ian Paice old school power...hellyeah!!!
Thank you for sharing sir....Great effort..Great results...
I have been a big fan of DP since 1968 and your drumming is a big part of that.
