@@lucasm7177 Thanks, man. It has been the hardest thing I've had to do, getting back into society and all. I have severe PTSD from it all, and I still live like I'm locked up. No money, no food, no nothing. Except a phone I can barely afford to pay for. I lost everything I had. So I'm starting over, with nothing, with a part-time job that seems like it's going nowhere, making barely enough money to afford a weekly motel bill. After the motel gets their money, it leaves me with 18 dollars to last a week. Hard to eat or enjoy life with 18 dollars per week! And I'm doing hard labor, so by the time I'm off of work, I'm so worn out I can hardly keep my head up. I've reached out to my community, but unfortunately, there are no programs available for the kind of help I need. So essentially, I went from being a Certified PC Tech, to a lawn mowing guy. Long gone are my days of PC repair, seeing how you need a PC to fix a PC. Catch 22 for sure!

I used to smoke heavy. I can see killings for them. It's hell to quit. When my late husband and I figured out we were spending $23,000 a year on cigarettes, I couldn't believe it. He died (sudden death, not due to cigarettes), but just 4 weeks after he died, my mom was diagnosed with terminal lung and brain cancer. That's when I quit, as a shocked widowed mom, watching her mom die. I figure if I could quit through that hell and most stressful period of my life, I could handle not going back no matter what life throws me now.

How did you spend 23000 a year on cigarettes the average cost of a pack is a little over six dollars let’s round up to seven. that means you both were smoking at least four packs a day. That’s 80 cigarettes a day which means you would smoke a cigarette every 18 minutes the average amount of time to smoke a cigarette is six minutes so for this to be true you would be smoking around half the time of a 24 hour day not including sleep. That sounds absurd. Ok you can say you smoked wildly priced stuff but why not smoke cheaper cigarettes than decide to quit over to much money?

All the fun stuff aside, such a great nugget of truth in there about stress. Stress is the silent killer, it's what makes the seemingly healthy guy drop at 50 and the cigar smoker live to 80. Not that one should use that as a license to drink and smoke and eat bad and not take care of yourself, but every little thing you can do to reduce stress will lengthen your life.

He could hardly breathe and had to use inhalers for the last 15 years of his life. Because I spent so much time in the living room with my parents when I was younger, I ended up suffering from respiratory problems myself from breathing in the second-hand smoke that visibly filled the living room.

As somebody who worked nearly 3 years in a prison from 2019 to the end of 2021, they smoked cigarettes just like anybody smokes weed
Rolled tobacco in book pages, whatever else paper they can find
When they would find a big stash on the unit, there was usually just as much bags of tobacco as there was bags of weed
Light it using a pop socket
A piece of wire that they would stick in the electrical outlet to cause a spark and light their cigarette

We would steal used Skoal from the jail warehouse, dry out the tobacco, roll what's called a "chewgler" (Bugler reference), then use the batteries from the TV remote to rig a ligher. Or, we'd "pop the socket". We'd sell those supposed cigarettes for up to 30 bucks a piece, and ALL profited.

i had to share a box with a guy who got so desperate for a smoke he saved up a bunch of nicotine patches (dispensed daily by a nurse) and scraped the stuff out of it, mixed it with some tea and tried to smoke it. it made him really sick and smelled like burnt plastic spoons. banning smoking was really dumb

    • @corvettefever360
      @corvettefever360 2 года назад +9

The nicotine patch thing was big on Rikers Island for a while after they finally took the cigarettes in like 2001. The last time I went thru there they stopped giving out patches, but I don't know what they do now. However, if it was done right it actually wasn't too bad. And when I 1st heard about patches & tea to smoke I thought it was ridiculous, but as a smoker at the time, I'd tried it. And if it's done right it's not bad, but it has to be done right, with the right tea, etc.
We would get a flavorless tea, completely strain it, then place the damp tea between patches & heat it up & let it cook for hours, mixing it up every so often, & eventually it would blend with the tea pretty evenly. It wasn't a cigarette, but didn't taste too far off, & it definitely had affect.
I'm just glad I quit smoking now.

Messing about with nicotine like that is really dangerous. Nicotine is very dangerous stuff and no one should be scraping that stuff out to use like that. Such a dumb decision to remove tobacco. Give designated areas for smoking. Cells only and outside but stopping it creayes a black market and causes friction. Oh, and it can also be harmful if people use patches the wrong way.

I did state time and smoked like a chimney in processing as my bunkie was Native American. Of course I got to my first camp the day after smoking was banned both for convicts and staff. Later when I lost a custody level a pack of cigarettes cost $160 but again I smoked free as I was on a road crew under the gun with two cool guards that didn't smoke but looked the other way. Amazing how much violence could be prevented and or ended with a nice pull off a Newport. Meanwhile the ladies could buy cigarettes from Canteen. Oh yeah, I went in September '09 for heroin related charges and came out clean for the first time in 20 years and it felt great. Still do and do what I can to help others get off that shit that most likely started with big pharma.

Congratulations on getting clean, I'm 6 years off heroin. It's disgusting how big pharma pushed opioid pills onto people despite knowing how addictive they are.. here in the UK it isn't such a big problem as our health system isn't private so there isn't the same financial incentives for doctors to prescribe opioids and big pharma doesn't make as much profit here, but I know the situation is really bad in the US and it makes my blood boil!
No one deserves to have their life ruined by pain pills.

They've even banned smoking in most rehabs. I went through 5 years ago and one thing all the counselors and whoever tell you is dont try to quit everything all at once, but then at the same time they take away smokes. I had to try real hard to find a place that allowed it, and even then they kept them and doled them out one at a time at certain "smoking times." I was like wtf? This is a place I am paying $1500 a week and I can leave anytime I want, I'm just trying to kick my dope habit, let me have my smokes. They were currency in there too, you would always sneak a couple extra out of the pack and just chief down as many as possible in your 10 minute smoke break.

Mild Devil's advocate here. Some people like myself are very sensitive to tobacco smoke. It doesn't bother my sinuses much to be around someone smoking but the prolonged exposure to that smell that gets caked onto everything in an enclosed space totally gets to me. Even a person coming from one of those places can trigger a migraine in me. So I'd be fine with tobacco in prison as long as they allowed plenty of yard time and only allowed tobacco outside. I love my dad but he's a smoker and staying in his house is miserable for me just because of the tobacco dust in his place. It's so bad that when he sends me a letter in the mail I can smell his letter when I open my PO BOX.

Everyday, everyday the toilets would back up all over the floor, and I came to the conclusion that this was a planned thing. In Regina's " hole", you might be in a room with another person. My other person did pushups on his bed all day, and all night. He only said two things to me. " do we have any rights here? ", and " do you want coffee? I work in a prison in Germany (as a counsellor) and smoking is allowed over here. when you walk across the yard you will see all the inmates standing at the windows of their cells to smoke, almost everyone does it. Cigarettes can be bought on commisary (lots of different brands) but can also be sent in christmas packages or be bought by family members at a visit, theres a vending machine selling them in the visiting room. and as a staff member youll get asked 50 times a day if you can buy some from said machine by inmates who dont get visits lol

Key is to roll it up before it's too dry or it crumbles. I made about 2 cartons worth of tree-leaf cigarettes every week, I'd just go and stash my pockets with tree leaves during rec time and roll 'em up and leave 'em to dry.
