Early release of prisoners sparks fears of rising homelessness and reoffending

- Sky's Jason Farrell speaks to former prisoners from Wales who were released under the previous government's early release scheme last year, but have ended up on the streets as they have nowhere to live.
About 1,700 prisoners were released from jails across England and Wales on 10 September in a bid to cut overcrowding - with thousands more anticipated to be freed in October.

outrageous getting released without knowing. unable to make plans. the system has failed these people. It's a revolving door.

He wasn't. He used the temporary accommodation provided to him to get straight back on drugs and begin committing crime again. It's exactly the reason this early release scheme is a failure and the only reason it has been done is a lack of foresight into prison spaces.

As much chance as i had whilst homeless in Germany and walked in off the streets into a burger king and started work the following week .

There should be support. There should be a plan in place to help them
There is they are meant to get help from probation officers but because he was let out early the probation office didn’t know he was coming and they had no way to help him at that time his name wasn’t on their list until his original release date so nothing they could do and as his already out that basically means even when his name makes it to the top of their list they won’t help him because they only help people who have just been released

Addicts should be in a safe secure environment until they’re free of drugs. Prisons have drugs, some wardens bring them in. It’s not helping these people it’s escalating the problem.
They should get them accommodation when they are released. How can they release someone from prison if there is no place for them to go. I thought they used to put them in hostels?

It's always been like that. The resettlement department in prisons ( who are supposed to find inmates accommodation) are unfit for purpose &, to put it bluntly, are useless.
It's so sickening how homeless people and people coming out of prison ect are treated shame on this government to busy helping everyone else from all over the world but can't even help people from the UK .
It's the fault of the council they just don't care about the homeless & don't help.
Fault of central government, and 14 years of tory rule. Councils simply don't have the money for, well, anything really.
If the council tax reduction is revoked and a pay per mile tax to get to work I think I might put my name on the prison waiting list myself!
It's not right that new arrivals get it all for free no questions asked.

There are no homes. We need a massive council house building programme with truly affordable rents. It would create jobs and ease the housing crisis bd boost the economy
Was released in 2017 after two years..They knew I was homeless when I went in so I saw Shelter and asked for help on my second day in..They never came to see my in all that two years and did not help..The prison didn’t either..I was released after two years back onto the streets as they found me nowhere to go..I was only told this 4 days before my release..I was vulnerable and frightened..They don’t care and that’s the bottom line..

It angers me that new arrivals get all the help they need.
Maybe they could move the victims of crime out of their houses and move in the early released.

Prison reform urgently needs to address and update the parole system. Its always been neglected.
This isn't a problem that just popped up.
Saying "they should have thought about that when they committed crime" etc etc etc doesn't fix the issue that many are turned out with either no place to go, or back into the same environment that landed them in prison in the first place. So they re offend.
Closer monitoring, better advice and support, counselling, practical computer and literacy courses (perhaps basic brickwork or carpentry courses, possibly while they're still inside approaching release dates?) is needed if we're to try and help get them away from a life of crime.
I have two objections. 1 no one should be released early from jail. 2 houses are the British people not anyone who just arrives in the correct way or the illegal way. Britain FIRST

Unfortunately it's also about money management and addiction. People make choices to spend their money on other things due to their habits and loose their homes , bedsits etc

This is truly heartbreaking. I hope this man and those like him get the support they need. Those kind souls at the outreach center are truly Angels.
I did the same as this guy when i was on the streets, sleeping in the A&E department in Charing Cross hospital.

Prisoners need to be given jobs whilst in prison, they should be paid minimum wage minus 3/4 for room and board and as a penalty, the money should be paid to them upon thier release
Sort of agree half should go to the local community, and some back for the justice system. Any remaining they get to keep.

I thought jails weren’t allowed to release people like that unless they had a pre approved address to be released to and until then they stayed this is a simple fix just release the people who can prove they have somewhere to go and that they won’t be in the street in risk to reoffend

Not a surprise. Early release without prior planning will result in rough living, more criminality, additional risk to victims and to women in particular. Never mind- Starmer has all his freebies and an exclusive apartment for his use.
