  • Get your ladles ready, because we about to stir this pot... The fishing industry has a huge problem. Innovation seems to be stalling out in favor of just copying popular baits and rebranding. There CAN be positive incentives around this for consumers. We might get a slightly lower price, and more availability. But we sacrifice innovation and hurt small businesses when this happens. In this video, we try to navigate the pros and cons that we have seen in the fishing industry. What are your thoughts?

It’s amazing that if you design and create a bait you can’t copyright it so this doesn’t happen. Thought that was the whole point of copyright law

If an idea is genuinely improved, I am ok with that. What I don't like, is when a large company takes someone else's idea, copies it, and has it mass produced in China to make it cheaper. Prime example would be berkley.

What about do it molds, they have copied Berkley’s shape 108 craw with the hatchet craw mold. It is the exact same but they slapped their logo on it.

Berkley hasn't put out an original bait in the last 5 to 10 years. Everything they put out is a infringement on someone else's bait, and they prey on the smaller companies idea's that can't afford to get in a ligation battle in court. It's sad.

Bass pro wouldn't be around without copying. They copy everything. Skeeter boats came out with the first bass boat. Everyone else copied. They might have refined it, adding new features not found in the original. If you didn't put a patent on it then that's your fault.

I think it hurts the most to the small business owners that spend a lot of blood sweat and tears coming up with the design and a big company makes it because their pro staff wanted it

I think what really got people mad was Berkley acting like they invented new types of baits when they were just copying small Japanese companies. Megabass magdraft wasnt the first harness swimbait and they never claimed to be. But Berkley was trying make it look like they put in all kinds of R and D to create completely new baits a like the Nessie and the Gilly, which were just strait up copies.

  • @Triple87
    @Triple87 7 месяцев назад +7

Availability and price are huge for the general public. Some baits are expensive, and not readily available. The fact I can go to my local tackle shop and grab a Nessie right now is important. I can’t do that with the flag. Not to mention the flag is $50, compared to the Nessie at under $15. That’s a massive difference for a weekend angler like me.
Some people might not like it, but im here to catch fish without emptying my pockets every time I lose a $50 bait.

I think the worst thing in the industry is selling artificial baits at a huge discount to the big box stores, therefore screwing the local bait shops that can’t compete ! Bait shops are closing around the country and when they are gone they’re gone ! Why are they important, ware are you going to get live bait to go fishing anymore ??? No big deal for adults but most kids grow up fishing live bait and if kids don’t catch fish they won’t pursue fishing later in life !!!

Welcome to trickle down capitalism, were I live we had a big multisport store closing down must of stores and now they everytime I go there they isle is smaller and smaller and the sneaker tracksuit is bigger because all the companies are run by MBAs that look to 3 month windows on PowerBI or microstrategy wich are fancy spreadsheets and miss the big picture.... and now they are failing because that they don't understand that people went there for the multisports and of course the most selling items are common would be sneakers and tracksuits because most people buy them and they were already on the store. But if you don't go there because thet don't have whatever sport you are into... Now they are failing.
So now if I want to do some coarse fishing with maggots I have to travel 32kms😂 and I live near a river!
We have scattered around the country ultra specialized stores that sell online other than that what survives is retired folks selling takle on shops underneath the house and nothing else.

I’m on the side of if it’s a copy with upgrades, be that in material, cost, action whatever, then it’s easier to swallow then when it’s just an exact replica for slightly cheaper due to a companies production cababilities.

There's only so many ideas that you can have with soft plastic, hard plastic, wood, graphite, fiberglass, and metal. For fishing lures, I mean. Besides lures that are 70+ years old, I've never seen an actual original unless it's still being sold.

Companies will always copy each other. When the Rat-L-Trap was invented, suddenly every company started making lipless crankbaits. When Duo introduced the spybait, suddenly everyone was making their own version of spybaits too. Every company makes their own spin of the same type of bait, and I for one am glad for it because it forces innovation.
But when companies just blatantly rips off directly from the originals, that's just shameful. cOuGhcOuGhbErKlEycOuGh Often those that suffer are the indie bait makers that aren't able to compete with the mass production levels that the bigger companies are able to churn out.

A few copies doesn’t bother me. It’s when a bait comes out and EVERY single company has to have their version. I think the entire Crush City line from Rapala was 100% unneeded in the industry. None of it is innovative and Rapala is just 5 decades behind on the plastic market. What ends up happening is the market gets so saturated with the same exact baits from different companies to the point where none of it is special anymore and most guys end up resorting back to the classics anyways. Googan is a massive contributor to the copy game. And it’s all just a cash grab. There isn’t a single Googan bait made better than the originals they desperately rip off. And their packaging suuuuuuuucks. I just think in the world of copies, a vast majority of them have no place in the industry other than “this is our version”. Nothing is original anymore and when you do get something unique, it’s fished to death and copied so fast that there’s a new bait out 8 months later and everyone has moved on to the “next best thing” and you’re left with a market of baits that’s literally garbage. I work in outdoor retail and when I new bait comes in, I know for a fact that I’m going to have to find room for the next 4 brands that come out with the same thing. It makes for a very stale shopping experience and takes away retail space for products that actually have a place in the industry.

If you design lures and can afford it. The way to protect your design is proof if concept, and a design patent within so much time after releasing to the public. So tired of big companies stealing designs.
I believe I have at least 1 lure design, out of many that I'm prototyping, that those big companies will try to copy. And I will forever protect that design.

Legally, similar is not same. Just because a bait is similar and designed for the same technique does not make it the same. Get into bait making and youll find most of your smaller companies are all buying molds from the same companies and selling literally the same baits. The differences are who's got the best color combinations and has the plastisol dialed in for a particular bait

I make alot of my own baits and to be honest they are all copy's. Occasionally I'll make my old moulds and basically use a tried and tested design and change the tail or bulk out the area I put the hook or something but I can make my baits whatever colour combo I want ,I can add salt or go with just plastisol, can make them as soft or as hard as I want but basically I'm churning out copy's but I love making my own baits, spoons, jigheads ,sinkers and I build my own rods. It all adds more enjoyment to my fishing.
I'm not profiting from it but something I love doing. Just last night my son and I cracked out about 60 jigheads , some articulated weighted heads and a load of bullet weights for our fishing trip next week. I have 4 days off and we are gonna go and hopefully smash some big winter Pollock. We will be chucking baits we made together and we can't wait.
Enjoyed the video though food for thought.

I hate it. In my eyes, there’s nothing positive that can come out of it. The copy is never an improvement upon the OG, all it does is oversaturate the market with crappier options that nobody needs. And down the road I can see it driving a lot of the true innovators out of the industry because what’s the point if you’re a smaller brand in coming out with something new and cool if some big company is gonna steal it right away? And as consumers who would want to walk in a tackle shop in 10-20 years and see nothing new and exciting, but rather a bunch of the same old cheap low quality KOs? I know personally as a consumer myself I’m willing to spend more to get the original which is almost always a higher quality product. It also sucks for the consumer because these giant companies that copy and oversaturate the market they take money away from the actual innovators, causing the OGs to go up in price! The Magdrafts just went up to $17.99. I think it’s horrible for the industry all around

When you see a new bait come out and everyone copies it. To me that just shows that the company who made it first, didn't invent it. Because if you create something new you get it patent. And once you do that you can't be copied right off the bat. So some of these baits I wonder if the companies actually invented them. Because patents exist for a reason.

Why did you choose rao’s spaghetti sauce over the great value brand? Or goodrich vs continental? Harvard vs community college? This daycare over that daycare? People value different things. Price, safeness, quality, durability, obtainability, uniqueness, etc. But I fully believe in small business and to continue innovation I think it would be wise for larger companies to partner with smaller companies.

I actually keep a can of gold spray to flash up dull lures. A senko is just an old Mr twister without a tail. Some soft lures look siilar due to function... like one with a flat horizontal (beaver) tail that can be dragged over obstacles without rolling over on the hook. Probably been said ad nauseum (I'm not reading all 100+ comments to check) but there is nothing new under the sun. It's incredibly rare, especially in soft plastics, to make something truly unique. There are only so many ways to make a bait fish, crawdad, etc imitator unless you make something so off the wall stupid (looking at you, Zuchi Bug) that everyone's like "that's lame AF" or "that's wild! It will definitely catch!". When you get into the hardbait game, especially the niche glides and what not, there's a different argument. I make and import baits so I'm all too familiar with this issue. The company I am trying to bring to the US has its own factory that also OEMs for large and small brands and I've been accused of 'copying' other profiles and designs where in reality, we had it first, and either it just wasn't sold here yet and some other brand brought it to market first, or it took time to bring it to market due to design patents overseas in their primary market and what not. In fact, we're dealing with that right now. I literally designed a bait that I would love to use and we've been getting it all going for some time now and getting ready to produce, and 6th Sense releases one of their newer baits that is super similar. I'm NOT saying 6th Sense copied me. Hell they probably have no idea who I am. What happened is, it's not a 'revolutionary' design and someone at 6th Sense either saw something similar, or independently came up with something like that on their own. I know I'm gonna get called a copy cat even though I literally sat down with a Blender artist and walked him through the design LOL. What compounds that is the market's unfamiliarity with my brand, so to the consumer, everything looks like a copy of something else. Don't even get me started on tribalism and brand loyalty LOL.
Edit: Just realized you guys said almost exactly this in your video LOL.

People are made for copying! Babies copy the sounds their parents make and learn words and how to communicate. Then they go to school where they copy again learning things that people before them have already figured out. Once they learn as much as they can (or want to) in their chosen field they can then start innovating or inventing new things or ideas. If there were no copying each generation would have to rediscover all these things and they would have no time to progress with new innovations or inventions.

I don't feel like you guys were consistent with some of your logic. Honestly, I agree that Elaztech is something good that can improve upon things. You seemed generally OK with using that as the justification for the Goby bait knockoff. But when it comes to Berkley, the Powerbait Formula would be the direct comparison. By saying that Elaztech is a reasonable value proposition, but not mentioning the Powerbait formula as a similar value proposition, then you weren't considering sufficient variables. Then the tail being enough of a difference with the poop baits, but the tail and added fin not being enough for the Nessie doesn't line up to me as well. I also personally consider the Honeycomb in the Cullshad as being a huge difference maker in bait action. Blatant copy by a massive manufacturer of a very small, dedicated fishing business here in Australia. The Holt Swim Prawn is such a unique design too so it stands out like dogs balls. Here's the reality. Copying happens. Who made the first fishing pole? Spinning reel? Fish hook? Etc etc etc. I generally avoid Berkley products because they are so blatant about how they rip off everyone else's designs, and I also avoid googan because of the same thing.
But competition drives innovation, and as much as I love the Rapala, what if that's all there was?

@19:55. I actually disagree that Berkley is hurting GDW with the Nessie. I would bet money that a VAST majority of average anglers had never even heard of GDW before all the ruckus over the Nessie. If anything, GDW is getting a ton of free publicity out of this. GDW was never designed to be a mass market bait, otherwise it would've been priced more competitively. Now, lots of people will try the Nessie, find out it is an egregious knockoff (which it is. There's no denying that and it's messed up) and possibly want to try the OG.

Just like Sam’s Cola or any other off brand cola instead of Pepsi or coke. So many examples but just a generic of the original. Or even medication, generic is the same but often cheaper than the OG.

    • @aaanglers

Being more expensive doesn’t make it a rip off. Cheap baits catch fish and so do expensive ones. “Usually” expensive ones use higher quality parts that last longer. These companies that come up with these new baits needs do like something in the food industry. Make slightly cheaper made off brands of your own products. Or even cross brand them with in store labels. Costco does this. E.g. Ocean Spray sold in Costco will have a Kirkland and Ocean Spray label on a single product. Ocean Spray still makes money, while Kirkland fans will just eat it up, not really knowing that it's a slightly cheaper made Ocean Spray juice. While Ocean Spray is still able to sell their higher quality juice at other places at full price.

Options are a good thing. But too many options are not. I work retail in the fishing department of a big Michigan outdoors store. I see it all too often. With too many options, customers can get frustrated by the severely minute differences between similar baits and that causes them to not branch out and find new stuff. Typically, they end up buying what they’ve been use to buying the last 20 years. Even if it sucks. You try to show them different options and most people just aren’t interested. A lot of it ends up just not selling. Chatterbaits are big one where nobody branches away from Z-Man. Nobody buys Slobberknockers. And, usually, if there are 5-6 copies of a bait, the only ones selling are the original and the competitor that matches that original the closest. Which is usually only one competitor.
I suppose I can only speak for my store and what we sell/don’t sell but when a bait starts having 4,5,…6 copies…. it’s just too much and most of it goes on clearance.
