Been a while since I discussed Heroes on this channel. To my surprise it's actually seems to be faring better than I thought, despite the fact that no one I know plays it anymore. What do you guys think is the reason behind this? Are the whales keeping it alive? Or is it something else?

It's probably a mixture of just enough people like myself casually spending on the game and whales hard carrying to keep it alive. While it's no longer amongst the cultural zeitgeist in fe community, there are certainly enough KCB Bryans and pm1s to keep it alive by spending hundreds of dollars on each new banner.

I play the game because i enjoy making build and maxing out my favourites. When it comes to powercreep i have to say its still bad, but in a diffent way. its moving in the direction of OP skills which thanks to inheritance still lets your older favs compete if you can keep them up to date. Theres now even the option to replace older weapons with arcane weapons so you can still compete with the whales to a degree.

@@ImmaLittlePip True, there is the extra culture of FEH only and preferred fans. IS has also done an excellent job in retaining players by adding a variety of new modes and features to keep fans invested. Especially in regards to all the new ways to acquire characters and merges. Also, instead of raising the costs with global inflation, an update to the shop last year lowered some prices and increased the value of purchases to incentivize spending and increase its longevity, unlike most other microtransaction games which raised prices and introduced shrinkflation to siphon as much money from the consumer in a short span of time before eventually shutting down.

      - day 1 f2p player, not a true active player anymore, only login for resources and play when a new chapter/event drops
      - obviously whales are the ones that keep the game alive, some of mobile games shut down because the payoff isnt good enough for the company, now i dont know how does Nintendo/IS works, but i think if this game wasnt profitable, they would have shut it down long ago.
      - if you want be f2p friendly you can simply do as i do, daily login, do the daily tasks that gives you orbs and tickets, do not touch the mail (act as a pseudo-deposit for orbs), skip bait banners
      - you only need 1 copy of a unit, while it's obviously stronger have a +10 unit but that is only the case if you want go competitive in PVP
      - you said u liked tempest trial, i dont know when you stopped but it's been some years that the tempest tried to put some clousure to the main female characters' story of each books, started from book 2 currently at book 4

Aside from the art, Forging Bonds is a real treat since you get to see interactions from characters you would have never been able to see or would have wanted more of, like just recently where Sonya talks with Niime about helping her turn her sisters back to normal. There's also some neat short official comic that they release depicting several interactions, often making fun of certain aspects of the game or certain character traits, so that's fun 😊
And well, generally you only really need one copy of a meta unit to be up to speed, so with enough luck you're good to go. Of course, for certain modes you will probably need more characters, and while there's enough inheritable skills to make almost anyone viable, there's only so many orbs a F2P can get 😅

As someone who plays FEH regularly and is f2p, a tip i have to give you is: don't ignore PvP, but keep yourself at a low level, I play at a pretty low level in aether raids, arena and summoner duels and it's actually pretty darn fun.
Also, another tip, altough for this one to make sense you must know some things about the game, if you want to use your favorites and have fun, GET THE ARCANE WEAPONS, they're probably the best addition to the game in recent years, I'm seriously thinking of building up fricking Navarre, a gen 1 unit, thanks to me having the arcane sword made for fast units.

The main reason why I still play FEH is that I like to keep in touch with the Older FE games and their characters. I love the older FE games but unfortunatly they've long since fallen out of relevancy. I don't just want to forget about them after playing them and replaying those games over and over again can only satisfy you for so long. There are a lot of FE characters who have potential for lot more what the game gave them at the time so it's nice to get something new even if it's small. Beside slim hope of remakes FEH's constant line of new banners are the thing that keeps those characters and stories relevant, at least in my head if not in the whole FE community. So in order to keep in touch I like to play FEH, build up my favorite characters, see them kick some ass, flex on my +10 B!Seliph etc. Replaying FE games is fun don't get me wrong, but at times FEH gives you the same sense of discovery that you felt playing a FE game for the first time, with every new pice of art and voicelines. Seeing Sigurd or Seliph with new art and voiceacted lines keeps me engaged with FE4 even tho it has been over 3 years since I played that game and even longer since it was released (also makes the remake wiat more bearable)
As for the game it self it's fine it's not as much fun as the mainline games but I ain't really in on feh for the gameplay.. I am personally a F2P player and I gave up on trying to play the game competetivly due to P2W and quick meta changes. I quit the game few time after horrible luck with pulls but I always came back when a new FE4 came out. I think FEH is most fun when you build and play with you're favorite units instead of actually trying to be competetive. It is good to that you keep up with the meta some what but that is not hard to do unless you're really short on time.

    @shirtlessgamer8496 9 месяцев назад +9

While Feh falls victim to typical power creep and gatcha mechanics, I think it is still one of the most generous gatcha games out there and very fun. They do a great job of still allowing you to use your favorite early gen units through various tools at your disposal which allows them to be competitively viable. Mostly… I’ve tried many other games where my early character/units are just unusable after a few years of power creep.
And personally as far as gatcha pricing goes, if you ARE gonna spend money on Feh, I’ve found it to provide more value per $ than pretty much all other gachas. Mihoyo games in particular (genshin/star rail) make Fehs pricing look like a blessing. Still, f2p feels best.

Yeah I think this relates to one of the bigger bits about being F2P. Due to the nature of NH banners, you can still guarantee one free focus unit that can help you keep up, whether they be a meta pick on their own or the fodder the provide can bump your older units up (esp. w/ Rearmed and Attuned Heroes). Given every month a F2P can get their hands on at least 135 orbs thanks to new story & paralogue maps, Tempest Trials rewards, LHB/MHB, and daily gifts, one can get quite far. From there its just a matter of being smart about your orb spending, saving whatever overflow of that 135 into a reserve they can use to splurge on whatever banner they please in the future.

    • @Fedra3443

@@Rasdanation I honestly think that attuned heroes are not really F2P friendly even if they give doubled skills.
As now an optimal unit requires the x-skill.
That's why I honestly would recommend rearmed heroes over them in general. As the weapon can help to make old heroes whose weapons are too outdated.

    • @Rasdanation
      @Rasdanation 9 месяцев назад

@@Fedra3443 but its also just a matter of fodder in general. Arcane and Attuned both allow for a free skill inheritance without losing the unit, and typically come pre-packed with some premium fodder to help older units update their kits.

I personally dont think that powercreep is a big issue in heroes. Yes newer units are getting stronger but they release new ways to buff older heroes as well. Arcane weapons are inheritable weapons that are on par with some newer personal weapons. I built up Marisa back when she came out in February of 2018 and I can still easily use her to this day. Yes it requires a lot of skill inheritance but if you use your orbs wisely you can get the fodder you need along with divine codes getting you manuals for other skills. Also lots of the newer units dont need merges to be good so you can stay Meta relevant with little investment while investing in units you like

As someone who is a literal day 1 player who hasn’t missed a single day since the game released, to me FEH is just something that has evolved with me over time. When it comes to the OC’s, the thematic changes in FEH’s OST and the constant updates, this game just feels as if it never got out of fashion for me. Along with introducing me to the rest of the franchise pre-awakening, seeing them getting new art with some receiving voice lines for the first time, I feel happy just getting to know all these different characters from the last 30+ years. And if a casual were thinking of maybe coming back to the game after a certain amount of time, the amount of orbs that one could get for free could range from about 100 to almost 1000 so really there’s a lot of opportunity to slowly creep one’s way back into the current meta.

Heroes is a game that I appreciate its existence, but I just can't keep up with it. I've played a lot of Gacha games in the past and Heroes genuinely has some of the most painful power creep I've ever seen. Units are released so quickly that just continuously escalate the powerscaling of the gaming to a point that if you slack too much, you're near dead in the water. I appreciate the art it provides at least! But I just don't care for the gameplay style anymore of 'Do exactly 0 damage' or 'You killed in a single hit' with effectively zero in between.

    • @pucci405
      @pucci405 9 месяцев назад

They released and still release way too many characters in a short time frame so all the niches get filled up way too fast and the game becomes very confusing if you don't keep up (also why would you bother building a character if there's a 99% chance they'll be useless in a month?), they should have focused on skins, an actually good story, co-op, good events and a limited cast of characters to make money, not on excessive powercreep, pvp and repeating the same events over and over and over again for years.
Fgo doesn't sell skins but the character release schedule is WAYYY slower compared to feh, the fact that with feh you also need a subscription to get the new skins and quality of life features doesn't help.
To conclude, why would anyone play feh instead of other gachas if you can't even play with your favorites because they have been powercrept? There's literally no reason except sunk cost fallacy which is why they should have focused on selling skins, not broken PRF skills and weapons.
Star rail, Honkai impact 3rd, Fate/go and ugh Genshin exist and they are better in pretty much every aspect.

The best part about coming back to FEH after taking a break for months is that there's a ton of new content that provides summoning currency. Just take the free heroes they give you (Choose Your Legends and other event units) and clear all the new content. You'll have more than enough Orbs to pull on whichever banners you want. When you're satisfied that gacha itch you can uninstall and when you want to see what's new you just start the cycle again. There's not a lot of fear of missing out as the banner reruns happen frequently if you've got your eye on a specific character. If you want to power up your old, heavily invested units, just grab the new characters and give your old units the latest and greatest skills.

One of the things that keeps me coming back is that I do enjoy the story, it's not perfect but I do find myself enjoying it a lot. I also think it's neat is that we can see what if interactions, or being able to talk to villains without being their enemies. One of the other things I really like about heroes is that it's not just your basic fire emblem, the fact that the game evolves it can be refreshing, even if I dislike a new skill/game mode I just like being able to play fire emblem differently.
This is a bit of a weird detail to focus on, but I once had taken a really long absence from heroes and when I came back I was surprised to see that they had started adding lore to things like tempest trials and I actually just loved it, because it made side content only meant for orbs and feathers, to something more engaging for me

FEH definitely has its ups in downs, but overall I think it does successfully cater to both categories of players, whales and casuals. The best way to return to playing FEH is realizing that the high tiers of the PvP modes aren't something you should worry about. Because yes, Vault of Heaven in AR, Summoner Duels and high tiers in Arena are only for players who can afford to heavily invest into characters and skills (AR to a lesser extent, you can also potentially be a genius like PM1). If you aren't one of those people, it's totally fine. Stay in mid tiers and collect what you can without stressing out.
At the end of the day, all those modes aren't really providing much of the most important currency in the game, which is orbs. And to get those all you have to do is play through PvE events, which between new additions like Seer's Snare and Binding Worlds are actually kinda fun.
Not to mention all the QoL features they added for the F2P players. Sure, those who pay money get more stuff, but compared to the game's first few years we actually received a lot of improvements in terms of summoning. Spark, focus charge, 4*SR, first summon tickets, weekly Arena tickets.
FEH is only really a chore if you take it too seriously. I don't. I just collect units, pull for and invest into my favorites, enjoy the beautiful artwork and great voice acting and theorize about what banner or characters could appear next. After all, we still have so many characters not added to the game. I hope it lasts long enough to when first FE4 substitutes make it in 😌

Aether raids is also is also a very fun game mode for me, the ability to create your own defense and watch the replays is super fun to me and you don't need insane units to preform well in the game mode either people like PM1 have shown that with the proper allocation of resources you can reach the top tiers with good strategies and thoughtful planning such as galeforce. The ability to build your favorite units is also pretty fantastic, with the introduction of arcane weapons you can practically build up any unit to be useful with the right investment.

reason why i still play heroes and love it... It closes some things I always wondered about the fire emblem games after beating them, or before them. You get to see what happened to them afterwards, even if theres different time lines of them. Example the bonds with Harden you see what he was like before he walked the path of darkness. Also interactions like the Hector and Lilina Valentines event. Also seeing your favorite characters talking with others not from their timeline, world, or land still hits it just right. I started on Awakening because that's my generation and saw the older games though the mobile and got interested in the games and stories before it, that my uncles played. It makes a interesting conversation with them and others.

The feeling of progress combined with the fast-paced daily FE gameplay and the exitement of new units/skills/gamemode release is enough to keep me invested
When it comes to Aether Raids for instance, when i started i used to get in and out of vault every week. Nowadays, i make it into top 1k almost every week, and that in itself just feels good, thats pretty much it haha

What have kept me in in game is the forging bonds events where newly added characters will get to have conversations with the other hero’s the ones I really love are the ones they do for fe4 and fe5 with letting the child characters of gen 2 being able to see their parents from gen 1 and them being able to see with them ie larcei and scatchach being able to see ayra again ever since how long it has been in their lives since they have been separated the other conversation I enjoy are the ones with Fe 5 characters giving them more to work with then the 4 to 5 lines of dialogue they have

Over the last year Heroes has got increasingly more F2P with also the aspect of being P2W as well. They fixed Arena where you no longer have to have a +10 Legendary for that week to score high, Aether Raids is the only P2W mode in my experience (I simply just dont touch it) banners now have guarantee pity at 40 summons where you can pick any character of your choosing of the featured characters, mostly for new heroes. They added a spark system as well if you get off focus 5 stars. For limited banners, such as seasonal/Legendary/Mythic you will require FEH Pass to guarantee a hero at 40 summons. Rearmed Heroes introduced inheritable prf weapons to give your favorites a boost with an updated weapon and mostly benefits those who did not come with a PRF weapon or their PRF weapon is outdated. If you are a new player or you wanted to come back into Heroes, my advice is just play it casually dont stress about it, save orbs and spend them and collect your favorites, build them up, work towards a goal or just take them in hard content if you want.

Actually because of the speed of power creep thats been going on latley there has been very little reason to +10 charcters outside of arena. You can get decently high rankings in Game modes like aether raid and summoner duel with low merges. And also if u come back to the game now you will have like 600+ orbs of storymode and multibattle maps to farm which is a lot. But yea building your favorites and earning the respect of your peers is the best meta game.

I'm F2P player, I played casually up since Year 4. A few months ago, I began taking Aether Raids Defense more seriously. I like being able to use different skills for different units. Creating defense maps and watching the AI try to use them to defend the pots, and also watching other players trying to strategize around my defense is fun to me.
FEH got me more interested in other Fire Emblem Games. I played FE7 and 3H for the first time this year and had so much fun. It's nice to see how FEH tries to capture the personalities and plot/narratives of those games in different alts, skills and voice acting. In a way, it made me appreciate FE7 and 3H more. The different artworks are appealing to me as well.

What keeps me coming back to Heroes is definitely the fan service, and not just pretty character art; I love Heroes's special events that bring back and even expand further on old character stories. The latest Forging Bonds has Rudolf meet with Mycen to discuss the ending of Shadows of Valentia, and it's just really cool to see. If you want to get back into Heroes, I've found that it's not too hard. Now days, there are many opportunities to rapidly make up lost time in orbs, feathers and other resources and plenty of banners that can get your foot in the door for the newest overpowered units, and then taking their skills and giving it to older units. At max investment, I still use Gen 1 Nephenee in my main team and she can keep up.

I first started playing not long after release, when the Narcian GHB was ending. The gameplay was fun for a while, but started to dip some time after skill inheritance was introduced. Sounds weird, and I did enjoy the customisation a little like putting Deathblow on Reinhardt, but it meant that units no longer had identity anymore. Powercreep also got really obnoxious and hasn't slowed down whatsoever - I think they just added some entirely new kind of hero and a bonus skill slot? Don't follow it much anymore. I do sometimes go on it though and do a few free summons, surprisingly getting some powerful units.
My favourite thing to do was going through Tempest Trials and Forging Bonds, particularly the latter for the dialogue... although there is so much wasted potential in FB because they often just have the new unit talk to Fjorm, Alfonse or some other OC. I also liked building a few units up, like getting Julius to +10 and +20 dragonflowers iirc.
The best part of FEH though is providing art and more importantly voice acting imo. Now a ton of old units have an actual voice and in some cases, like with Ullr and Elimine, proper personal artwork. When voice AI advances further, it should be possible to make character dialogue in older games like FE4 fully voiced using Heroes voice lines. I'm not getting back into the game though, it isn't in a good place. If you're interested a great strategy game akin to FE on mobile, check out Langrisser Mobile - been out for years and zero powercreep, properly large maps and gear, excellent side objectives and secrets. Even has the stories and chapters of the mainline games, that are almost all JPN-only, full playable in English. Pretty grindy though.

I think heroes is a great entry to the series for anyone interested. For me, it was initially hard to get into fire emblem because of how many characters you are given to control and map size(I tried awakening and fates first). The dumbed down formula is extremely inviting, and the short maps are good to pick up and play.
    To answer the proposed questions:
    1. I’m still playing because I enjoy building characters and seeing new characters get into the game. Taking skills from the new units and giving them to my old units is pretty cool to me.
    2. F2P players should save orbs and only summon for their favorite characters throughout the series and characters that would provide good skill inheritance to them. One of the cool things about FEH is that EVERY UNIT can be viable when given the correct inheritance. Right now, FEH is a lot more skill focused rather than character focused. I would also suggest playing around with the game modes to see if there is one in particular that you like. IMO, PVE is more fun than PVP in feh. It really just comes down to preference.
    3. I think FEH is very F2P friendly, especially for new players. The amount of orbs obtainable through the story and paralogues is insane. A common misconception surrounding FEH is that you need to be a whale to compete in PVP game modes. Most meta defining units are busted without any merges. It’s really just a team building thing.

I recently picked it back up after playing Engage. The staying power for me is 1. New meta heroes come out and you have a good chance of picking up 1 or 2 a month which keeps you in touch with the power creep 2. Building you characters and your army as a whole is the fun part. You feel like you can really challenge the meta with some creative or cheaper builds 3. PVP is limited and low stakes. Grand hero battles and the events can really be like puzzles to solve if getting too sweaty ain't your thing.
Ui is outdated, the weapon descriptions are getting reductions and some of the mechanics are not intuitive. You'll waste a few opportunities early but I'm finding that part fun as well

As someone who still plays every day from launch, The game only gets better as it goes on from a build your favorite perspective, As of today you can pretty much build any character you like and make them OP , I retired from AetherRaids 1 year ago because i dont want to play it anymore/have enough resources to last me a lifetime, and am focusing more on completing the catalogue of heroes 966/1014 , The main story is hard to take serious since the chapters are way to short and for some reason they are dead set on releasing a new book every year instead of taking the time to develop a good main story , A new player can probably pick the game up at any point , Pinpoint 1 character out of the 1014 they love and make them OP and clear all the PVE content of the game with them, The power creep will only get worse as the game goes on and you will have to study to understand what the hell is going on ( It became really complex , Yu-Gi-Oh levels of nonsense) The game is really generous and makes it pretty easy for you to get a copy of your favorite character , The sooner you start playing the better because you miss out on log in bonuses which give lots of resources and the weekly arena which gives a ticket to obtain older 5 star characters Gen1 to Gen4 (i think) .

I played FEH 100% f2p for about 2 years as an easy break from a stressful school period. I tried to follow the meta but at some point the sheer.... text to read was just ridiculous. And so I dropped it a year ago. However, I recently came back with the same account out of curiosity and decided to build a couple of teams just for PvE fun. There are so many new things and threats that even the main story can be challenging, but doing it with your old favourite characters might be a fun experience and possible even for older units.
Things like beating a Genealogy-themed battle with a Sigurd team or using hilarious stuff like Oliver, that can teleport near herons.
Is doing this f2p friendly? Yes but it can be grindy to get older units to decent levels depending on your resources.

I’m playing that while there is power creep, using dragon flowers and weapon refinery can help. You can also trade out skills by using these scrolls to get a character skill set in compile. But it’s difficult.
I recently decided to use original Felicia. I used 4 dragon flowers, weapon refinery and gave her an A skill that gives her a raise in attack and defense when diagonally from an ally. I also gave her an S skill that buffs her defense and speed and gave her a plus 1. I also ascended her and gave her a raise in attack. She can keep up somewhat, but I still have to be careful when putting her in enemy range. Maybe one day I can get her a decent B skill.

I also want to add that I don’t necessarily read the skills when I’m in battle. I just look at the enemy and be like, “Okay, can I hit without being killed? Okay, cool.” *Use Felicia to throw her plate* I only ever read them when I pass over a skill and I contemplate whether it suits the unit or not. Though I understand if people can’t do that.

I actually picked up FEH again a couple months ago been having a blast with it. F2P seems pretty decent to me so far, I'm sure if I wanted to actually deal with meta shenanigans it would be a nightmare but as things stand I feel like I get a decent amount of pulls anytime a banner I care about pops up. Like this recent one with these attuned heroes (I think that's what it's called) I've pulled about 50 times on it and have managed to snag 2 Peony's some how, though I would like to get the other Fairy girl too, which is making it decently tempting to break my F2P and grab their Sub system for 10$ so I can choose a 5* unit and get her lol. I'll wait till the last moment for that though still have 19 days to hopefully pull her.

  • @MrApplefan44

I can't say that power creep isn't still rampant with the game, cuz it is. The amount of videos seeing new units shredding older characters that are +10 with +20 dragon flowers right out of the gate is crazy. I've had plenty of struggles with how the game shifts game meta around and I've had plenty units fall off (rip my OG Fjorm) due to the higher skill tiers that keep getting more wild with damage reduction, movement increases, and general stat balling to ridiculous degrees
I've been with the game since launch with the same account since then and the one thing that keeps me around is tackling the new content that comes out and using the units I enjoy to clear it. Not that every new content keeps me engaged. I haven't touched the new real time PvP Summers War since I'm not a hard PvP player, but I still do the regular arena to get those rewards.
I'm not free to play by any stretch, but I'm not a whale either. There are plenty of banners that I don't spend money on even if there is a character I want and I have the $$$. I generally only buy cheap packs that are $13 or less when they appear and a few regular orb purchases if there is that last stone to try in a set and I'm 2 orbs short, so I'll buy the $1.99 3 orb purchase to try my luck. It may be wasted, but it keeps me grounded and has me try and get all the F2P orbs I can get before dishing out the $$$.
It may not be a good thing to say to convince others to return, but it's also kinda baseless to not come back to a game cuz that game has stuff that can crack your wallet for. If you enjoy the game, especially when its free download/play, then spending what you want shouldn't detract enjoyment or get bullied over. It's all up to the individual players.
Even if, you Manga, never pick the game back up, then that's your choice in the end. This game has plenty of P2W and power creep in content like Summers Wars and Aether Raids. I just enjoy using the units I like and having plenty of choice for new team setups.
Hopefully this is boring to read or comes off with hating people that don't agree that the game is fun. I've seen too many games that I loved end too early, so still being able to play this one even almost 7 years later is something to cherish cuz it could be gone out of the blue (rip Tales of Crestoria you died too young)

I’ve bought the feh pass and orbs a couple of times but ftp really isn’t that bad if you spend orbs smartly like color sniping. My advice is to just find a unit u like, build them and repeat they don’t have to be good to be enjoyed, however with rearmed characters it’s super easy to make anyone viable for example: I remember you said you have a +10 bridal Louise have her inherit alchrist’s kit and she will destroy things left and right the only semi hard part is getting all the prerequisite skills on Louise ahead of time but it’s not too difficult

  • @chunky2017

F2P here. I played through the game's worst time (Fallen Edelgard years ago) and it almost had me quit. The reason I did not was because being forced to actually team-build became the what made me love it.
Now I like the game for the same reason I like deckbuilding games. Unbeatable enemies such as Hector, Reinhart, and Edelgard were at some point painfully OP. Sometimes even optimal play cannot make your team win. The same is true in deckbuilders, and we don't fault them for it.
Throwing four good heroes on a team is only good until the next omni-breaker threat arrives, but a well built team can make small adjustments as the meta progresses, even a year later.
It would be better if the powercreep wasn't so intense, but there is still enjoyment to be had in so many aspects.

I still can’t believe I am still playing it since it launched in 2017. But I do play less and less now. I am hopeful of the day heroes gets announced to be shut down only because I want IS to some kind of big blowout for the closing of heroes where free players can get a bunch of awesome pulls and rewards during the closing months of the game. Idk if they would like this, but it could be a way for them to get every penny from the closing months by making the “pay to win people” get even more goodies from paying. Just make it a win win for both free and paying players during the ending weeks of heroes and that would be a blast.

My predilection for gachas, even if I never forked a cent to them, has always been the collecting characters part of it, and heroes is no different. I play the game for those times like free sniping a brave Elliwood, promoting Valentine Titania and get them with a great hero banner unit going at the time and another unit at had at low level, and go to town on level appropriate challenges, and repeat such methodology throughout all the diferent levels, with whatever random composition I get going.
Generally speaking, the game itself is enjoyable: Except for the hardest challenges (and specially if getting greatly involved in PvP) you can probably overcome most PvE with your favorites rather than the meta units. But take this advice with a grain of salt, for I am the type of player that also throws a party containing Ninja!Lyn in the highest levels of difficulty.

As someone who plays FeH mostly for fun, not Aether Raids ranks or Lunatic maps, I like it a lot. Some of the skill decriptions gets completely crazy, older units are far weaker than the new ones, and the stories often have great setups, but fizzle out near the end. But I love collecting heroes and getting my favorites to level 40. Forging Bonds shows character dynamics between games, Hall of Forms lets you build your own units, and Loki's Pawns is just quick and easy fun. You can get almost anything without having to spend a single cent on the game.

I recently got back into FEH. I was always a f2p player and in my prior time playing heroes I had the most f2p +10s such as braves, demotes, and greil heroes.
Oddly enough, I'd say the game has become far more accessible to f2p players since it's original release at least when it comes to summoning. Because of sparking, remixes, and the occasional god tier greil unit, you can everything you need to stay competitive in the meta at considerably low orb cost. Your gains become guaranteed with sparks. When FEH was in it's first 2 years I thought it was impossible for a f2p player to +10 anyone but now it doesn't seem so ridiculous. Also, the community of people who remained have a good understanding of which banners are best to summon on. There is a banner where players can choose whose on it and they usually chose top tier characters that everyone should have. The longer you play the more heroes you will get. Because of divine codes, you are guaranteed to get premium fodder or merges just by playing the game every day.
As for combat, the biggest change since I've last played is the power creep of skills. They are super extensive and do more than most preferred skills, so much so that they define a unit more than anything else sometimes. The beauty is, you can put them on anyone and it makes them viable or serve a purpose. Arcane weapons let you do this as well and they are basically exclusive to units that got power crept. Dragonflowers fix old stat lines. There is an answer for every type of powercreep and you have to applaud IS for that.
I'd say the appeal of FEH as opposed to a mainline game is that it is more like a puzzle, kind of like chess sometimes. Harder FE can be like this too but RNG can screw you over. Many FEH players like it *because* there is no RNG and planning is rewarded. Also, there is immense satisfaction in building a super unit that demolishes everything.

Honestly what's kept me in the game this long is in part the Brave Ike Brave Lucina team core I've been using nearly unchanged since Spurn came to the game back in July of 2020, get some merges on Bike, which since you get a few free copies from what I recall becomes rather easy, and refine his and Lucina's weapons, slap on some DC, spurn (I still use spurn 3 in fact lol) and an enemy phase oriented C skill on him and your good to go, it's basically carried me through most of the PvE content since then and you still have two other team slots to play with to try and help overcome the higher max difficulty PvE stuff so the power creep while still there and noticeable didn't really invalidate or require me to change my main team at all so I never had to stress about summoning a particular unit before its banner ended or else be afraid of not being able to complete content. That said save for Aether raids I basically didn't touch most of the PvP oriented stuff and even than it's been months since I last touched AR. The only other thing of note I guess is that I usually just do the time limited PvE modes every day that cycle in and out every week or 2 and then stop playing for the day so I suppose that has also helped me not get too bored or burned out on the game.
P.S. The fact that the Brave ikecina core allows me to keep using OG Merric and feel like he's strong with how he supports them against high Def units and against fliers also helps.

I play it f2p and mostly just do story. I do the monthly sub thing whenever I want to auto through the events to see story. Sometimes there's absolute bangers in there, like Niime retelling the events of her own game to Seiros and Seteth (who have just encountered fallen Rhea) on the concepts of a dragon falling or being driven mad. Like, nobody was asking for that but clearly someone on the team loved FE6 enough to give stuff like that. Imo, five bucks is worth it. I think it's like with Star Wars, which period of movies you watch first defines with which eyes you see a game or the entire franchise. The reason I know Fire Emblem is because of FEH, that's why even though I play the main games I always go back to the one I knew everything about. They are also the dialogues of the characters who have completed their games and how they are post-game or alternative ending. Joshua ruling Jehanna, Chrom with two versions of Exalt, and the relationship between Azelle and Arvis. I really feel like I can't give you advice because playing the meta doesn't interest me because it breaks every month and I only collect heroes (Yes, like pokemon); Maybe and just maybe you can see FEH, not as a game itself, but as an extension of the previous ones.

It does get disheartening when powercreep happens but I genuinely love seeing these characters like Lucius or Rebecca powerhouse through the current meta because I spent time and effort building them up into what they are. Also, character art for older heroes is always nice to see, and I enjoy Forging Bonds quite a bit because it fleshes out older game's characters a bit more. The game may not be the most F2P friendly, but I do find it better than a lot of the other competing Gacha games.

While sometimes I don't finish all my quests and I might forget to do arena this week or that one, it's still "fun" to collect and build your favorite units. Having a +10 Sacred Stones Vanessa (lol) with Arcane Weapons and tier 4 skills is a nice thing to see in my barracks, and I get the greatest joy in seeing players with a full roster of +10s of their favorites. It's like as soon as the 4th Anna comes out, Anna fans flood the arena with 4 +10 Annas and I just love seeing that.
Definitely should be played as a collector, not a PvPer

I'm a f2p player since launch and I still play regularly. The game is relatively f2p friendly. It gives you some nice (free) good units every now and then. Currently it is becoming less f2p friendly though. You can only inherit 3 skills at a time, while most new units come with a lot of tier 4 skills. So you have to inherit two of those units instead of one, like it used to be. Older units can definitely be used, although they require a lot of investment most of the time. A lot of new units these days come with kits which can be used right out of the box. In my experience, summoning even as a f2p, usually results in you getting the unit you like. You can't just be randomly summon on every banner though.

I still play Heroes because it gets my "Fire Emblem fix" regularly. I find that mainline games require a large time sink sometimes and Heroes is the type of game you can kinda just keep picking up, play a little bit, put the phone down, pick it back up, etc.

Hi Mangs! Long time fan of yours still lovingly playing Feh everyday to this day! 🥰 as to answer your questions:
    1. Why do I still play? I’ve invested too much money into this game lol but also I LOVE Fire Emblem, also new heroes gets added every WEEK so it never gets old, that’s what keeps me engaged for sure!
    2. Casual F2P who wants to get back? That’s easy! Just DONT play for the meta or competitive modes like Aether Raids, Arena, or Summoner Duels. Just focus on collecting your favorite heroes, build strong ENOUGH heroes to clear the maps for rewards and orbs 🤑and just roll with the punches 😊 imo competitive is not worth it nor fun and would be the most unnecessary stressful part you need in this game. The powercreep SUCKS
    3. This game is VERY F2P friendly, we get enough orbs per new banner to usually guarantee a spark; only the competitive modes like I said are for the whales and I don’t mess with that myself, I just play to collect my favorite characters and make them strong enough to reap rewards at my leisure 😌
    - lastly, I personally would LOVE to see you do more videos about how characters are portrayed in Feh, you can focus more on the art! 😊maybe even voice lines too! I’d like you to explore more hero types in Feh like Ascended and Legendary, give your thoughts on who you’d like to see get that treatment next! Overall anything Feh character related I would LOVE to see please!🥰
    - fun fact: my favorite hero is Rhajat Black Magician~

As a day 2 at launch player there was ups and downs, things were needed however executed poorly, most of the side modes (70%) are forgotten or the same repeates with little rewards or no rewards at all (mainly orbs). The passion of +10 rarity in that time from 2017 was very insane, got me even invested in my time and im glad i did. Powercrept is the biggest part of the game and also causes the severe downfall of the game as a whole. This game id considered this painfully average mobile game ,not everyone need to spend money on FEH to be like everyone on the top league

I’ve been playing FEH since its third year after release and although the powercreep of the skills they’ve been releasing lately are stupid, I still enjoy playing the game. My recommendation for anyone thinking of returning to the game is to just ignore the meta as much as possible and have fun with your favourites. I personally couldn’t care less about the competitive game modes like AR and SD so I just ignore them. I just have fun with Forging Bonds or TT and building my favourite units. One good thing they introduced last year are arcane weapons, which gives older units or those without a preferred weapon some sort of viability. For instance, you could give Louise Arcane Darkbow to make her a very strong offensive archer. Just ignore the bullshit (like the newly added “attuned heroes and X skills”) and just appreciate your personal favourite art and characters

One of my favorite things about this game is that it maintains annual popularity polls, in fact two of them.

I played Heroes all the way up to the launch of Dragalia Lost right when college started in 2018 and then I slowly stopped playing both because I didn't have the time anymore for both. I still watch the banner reveals and the story cutscenes, but I only logged back in after November 2018 to get the free stuff for Engage back in spring. The game couldn't ever pull me back into playing it.

I remember the morning I woke up and finally got her and +10 her.

I've managed to continue enjoying FEH by simply ignoring PvP modes, or playing them at a relatively simple, lower level. There's still some great PvM stuff, some of which (Binding Worlds, Hall of Forms) don't even use your own units, so there's no worry about powercreep there.
Powercreep *is* crazy, but playing the way I do it takes a long time to truly fall behind, and I haven't spent money in years. I think if a new or returning player wanted to get into the game, the best advice I would have is, "Don't worry about doing everything." Don't try to hit the top ranks, skip modes you don't enjoy. Just play what's fun for you and be content letting the rest of it go.

Even though it's kind of a weird reason, I just love the Heroes characters designs and overall aesthetic of the game so much to the point I most of the time care more about their characters than those from mainline games.
Another thing regarding powercreep, something that even though feels more like a scotch tape solution to me, arcane weapons and character revivals made some of my favorite characters felt good to play again, maybe not as much as the new meta character that comes every new banner, but enough so I can enjoy playing most of the game's content

So, the reason I still play heroes is because I love creating builds on characters that I like (for example, I recently played Shadow Dragon and since then I want to +10 the entire Wolfguard and Hardin) and I mostly ignore the meta and only do Arena and Aether raids for the rewards, like, seriously, I only play the Arena until I get the ticket for the 5 Star unit.
Aether Raids is way easier, because you get the daily bonus even if you lose.
And the moment I get together the team I like, I challenge the Tempest trials and the harder difficulties for the story mode.
When it comes to the meta and online Play, I keep my precious units as far away from it as possible, because I couldn't care less how good Holst, Balthus, Hilda and Marianne are compared to whatever the current meta is.

Well, it is a mixed bag. The Gacha rate is a bit more lenient than in the past, there are great F2P units to choose from and build up. One that dropped was Murdock from FE6 Binding Blade, a very strong once in a blue moon F2P unit, same as Young Minerva. He has great potential as an Axe Armor. The Gacha is a bit more fair than in the past. Powercreep is out of control, but is very manageable. Plus with there is Forma souls to build great units, with a skill pool that is big. Outworld realms is one of the hottest modes for some resources and If you really want, spend some to make one forma unit from the mode which someone already built up, yours. As for me, I have long invested time and money into the so I am with it till the end.

I'm playing heroes since day one every day, it was the game that hooked me in the FE franchise. In the first few 2 years i wasn't really investing much time in it since I was kinda young and new to the mobile game scene but as years went by I got even more invested. I Started to love the OCs (Most of them have gorgeus arts and a few have interesting ideas of stories like Gullveig, Eir, Embla), at the same time I got introdused to old characters such as Lucina. The ideia that i can make my favorites stronger and stronger is quite adictive to me even if there are Power Creep ( I literaly managed to create a build that makes my Lucina to beat Wind Tribe Claude as a semi F2P player {Only bought Feh pass 3 times}, bro I'm so happy). I do love the challenge aspect that the game brings to the table.
I am captivated by the fact that you can enjoy the game in many different ways such as focusing only in the competitive scene like Aether Raids, Arena, Arena Assault, Summoner Duels, etc. If you are not the person that likes to try hard like that, you can casually play PvE because the game offers an interesting variety of modes.
To end my positive perspective of the game, i like how they are generous with the in-game currency, if you do everything, you can get 300 orbs in a month, in perspective, that is 75 opportunitys of a 5 star hero per month for free (besides the free summons and tikets).
I do understand that the game has flaws, many flaws, like Power creep, Too long skill descriptions, some ideas are not that well implemented in the game, issues in the narrative of the main story since it's too short due to the format, kinda hard to understand a few competitive modes and so on, but I still am having a blast because of all the things I already said and due to the Insanely god tier OST and character design.
If you're starting now in the game or trying to be back at it, i recommend to join the Reddit or Discord groups to ask for help, the community WILL for sure help you in case you don't undestand something and try to tackle things slowly, a week you try to understand the events that are up, the other you try arena, maybe discover a unit you like and try to use it the best way possible and then you keep going like that, doing the things you enjoy, leaving what you don't like by the side and trying to create a nice routine for you in the game.
Hope it helped someone this long comment, and sorry if you find anything written in a weird way, I'm not used to write long texts in english.

I still keep coming back to FEH for new heroes, to see who is added next and have them further fleshed out in their Forging Bonds episode. FEH has been becoming more alt and OC heavy lately though which has been wearing away at my motivation. I also still enjoy the bite sized FE gameplay, that's always been a huge plus for the game.
For a casual F2P player to return, I'd focus on just collecting and building your favourite characters and making your "FE dream team". Skill inheritance and inheritable "prf" weapons have given lots of units a new lease on life.
The biggest thing to avoid as a casual is the PVP modes: Arena, Aether Raids and Summoner Duels. That's where you'll really feel the powercreep and have to start using units that are good, not units you like. Most of the other PVE stuff (Story, Grand Hero Battles, most events) are fairly friendly.
FEH is probably even more F2P than it used to be due to accessalible sparking, and having many competitive modes no longer really requiring merges for power or scoring. New units are so strong that a +4 to their stats doesn't really help them anymore so if you just have the newest heroes you can just about go toe to toe with with most established players. Whales will still crush you at the highest competitive tiers due to being able to afford expensive skill inheritance, but you will avoid them if you try and play competitive modes with unmerged teams.
So just focus on your favourites, avoid PVP modes unless you want the challenge, and save your orbs to spark units you like!

To tell you the truth, my first FE was Awakening. I didn’t actually had a game though, but rather I played it from someone else. I got interested at first, but left it behind cuz I was a kid back then and got boredom until FEFates where I bought two of the different route games. Back to Heroes, when it was at launch, I played several times but I grew boredom due to having low utilities and mechanics of fire emblem. I’m still playing and lovin’ the game, I guess the only reason I still keep playing was to be able to play my favorite characters in the series like Marth and some more, and the best part is that you can play characters that were unplayable in older games and I love it. It still has some flaws like the use of gacha but… ehh I still like it nonetheless

Yeah, I was really excited for heroes when it first came out. I was excited at the prospect of building teams of my favorite units from different games. I ended up becoming very disheartened for some of the reasons Mangs mentioned here - I spent a lot of time and effort building up my favorite units, but the power creep of the new characters made all that work for nothing. One thing I enjoyed as well was the simplicity of the game, but almost all of the abilities are so convoluted and complicated that it's nearly impossible to know how the combined abilities of any unit will play out. It's not really a strategy game anymore, but rather a race to get the latest broken unit so you have a fighting chance to compete in the arena and pvp realm. I still log in every once in awhile, but the story is absolutely wonky now and I usually end up frustrated that all my units are now useless 😒

    Why do I still play?
Cause... I like Fire Emblem and the fan art/service. Plus there's a stubbornness in me that drives me to still try and +10 some old characters I've yet to max. You'd be surprised what you can do with some of them thanks to Dragonflowers, even though they're ridiculously hard to accumulate. Although admittedly, I've been logging on less and less because of the exact reason you've stated... powercreep is just through the roof, balls to the wall, and I can't stand dealing with armors in PVE or having to deal with the fact no matter what tiles I step on to bait enemy units, my single tank has to get hit by 3 different colors, 2 different damage types, and likely not kill anyone while the rest of the enemy units begin to close in and swarm me with overinflated stats.
Thank God for PM1 with his guides cause he's probably the only reason I can still stomach that torture.

Context: i only spend when i'm sure to get to spark or for like formas and summoner customization packs.
tbf i like more the game as it's now than it was time ago (Year 1 player here). Powecreep is not there anymore because we have so many broken mechanics and inheritable skills that it literally doesn't matter, not even the best tank in the game will be able to tank wind tribe claude for example.
Old characters can be tuned up through rearmed heroes (who make them pretty dumb good on most modes)
and we've had old heroes become absolutely busted with refines and new skills
(Brave dimitri, Brave edelgard, Brave marth, Brave marianne, Gatekeeper, Gerik, Velouria, Peony, Winter Marth and the list goes on and on trust me)
Trust me casual player, you WILL have fun playing the game
