My sister recommended your podcast. Great information. I can’t walk far from my stenosis but I can play pickleball for several hours.

I have three of Stuart McGill's books. Are there any recommendations for spine hygiene with regards to cervical spine?

Can you talk about how to increase our ability to hip hinge instead of flexing our thoracic and lumbar spine? Forward flexion is a problem for me as I determined from your book, but hip hinging is difficult, because I think I have very tight hamstrings.

Doctor of Physical Therapy student here. I would recommend you to see a PT in your are to properly assess you and provide personalized treatment. With that said, here is some generic info. McGill has the best diagnostic approach and for treatment, and borrows from the uses parts of the McKenzie Method. If flexion makes you worse, then that means you respond better to extension. Try laying on your stomach on a firm surface for a few minutes. What you’re looking for there is to see if the symptoms centralize or peripheralize. If your pain stays in the back or Glute area, that is a decent indication that you need to work into extension. Google McKenzie exercises for Extension Derarrangement. There is a progression that starts with laying on your stomach and gradually working into prone press ups, then strengthening you lumbar extensors. Glute bridges will also help. As far as hamstrings go, they can be tight and weak at the same time. If you tolerate laying in prone, you can try some light prone hamstring curls on the machine at the gym. Sometimes gently working a tight muscle can cause it to relax (autogenic inhibition).
One additional resource that McGill has is an exercise series called the McGill Big 3. I recommend trying those as well.
      So to recap:
      1. McKenzie Extension
      2. Glute bridges
      3. McGill Big 3
      4. Try light prone HS curl 1 set of 8-10 and see how you feel after a day or so and repeat for 3 weeks. If it feels good, add an extra set of 10 and gradually increase weight.
Let pain be you guide. Do not push much past 4/10 pain during exercise in the beginning. Look up tutorials on RUclips for McKenzie extension so you have some guidance. Good luck!

What about stenosis caused by a bulged disk? The treatments for each seem counter productive to each other? How do we resolve this concern?

I wonder if prof McGill has some opinion on clubbell training? It seems to be gaining more popularity with guys like e.g. Mark Wildman, etc. Was wondering if these excercises pose any risk to spine, especially for someone with back pain history already.

As a struggling that's made some progress over the last 3 years. I have exactly the same symptoms this person described where sitting now relives my pain and can short increments of up to 15 minutes and then sit down and go on again. I can sit for hours.
However this an incredibly difficult problem to fix because I don't think it's true stenosis as patients with severe stenosis generally can't walk more than 5 minutes.
I do agree neck postures do contribute to my pain and wearing neck brace does help.
I have a bulging disc which has calcified into an osteophyte in the spinal canal. However it's not compressing the nerves. I believe its not entirely a disc related issue.
More likely to be an SI Joint problem. It'll be interesting know if Dr. McGill has found a solution for fixing SI joint problems because so far his master clinicians along with other SIJ specialists I've consulted were not successful in my case at least.

I’m 27 and got stenosis but walking 2-3 miles and being active is what takes away 98% of discomfort. It when I sit down to long or lean my head foward that I feel the ache
