      no, its amazing that we are supposed to pay thousands for this. This should be taught in biology and sports education in every school, learn good understanding of your own body, not some bullshit ass information you'll never need in your life. Actual practical information that takes care of your health, instead of sitting in a chair in school for years learning literal nonsense you forget 90% of.

      The info is free, but have you looked into the cost of having an assessment and treatment by McGill or someone certified through McGill's organization? You'll be amazed alright. These YT videos are just PR. I'm sure Dr. Mcgill is a good person and is very passionate about spinal injury, etc., but he's raking in a wad of amazing money.

    I was a student at the University of Waterloo in 1986 to 1989 and had a young professor with a very impressive mustache! His name was Stuart McGill. Little did i know that he would become a workd-wudecsuthirity in the management of low back pain. Now, over 30 years later I am a chiropractor in Bangalore. India and still learning from my professor via RUclips.

    Prof. McGill's method put me back upright after a huge L5 and spondyretro listhesis injury ( the alternative was screws and rods in my back - still a looming promise of a neurosurgeon )
    ...then I moved on to calisthenics, the injury was a distant memory, became overconfident/cocky in my training, neglected the big three routine and 13 years later ...it caught me out out again with a vengance.. Now I'm out of it again only thanks to reintroducing the big three routine ...As he says , not once or thrice a week but everyday..
    like a prayer.. for life, Thank you Profesor...

      Adam J. Story, DC DR Story, I have been following your channel. In one of your posts to Dr. Mcgill, you stated that you noblonger recommend certain stretching exercises. Could you tell me which ones? I've been doing your ice skater for the piriformis and just want to make sure this isn't one that you no longer recommend. Also, could u let me know which ones?     I am very happy to see your video. The instability in the movement process of the patients that I wonder and always ask why they are, were clearly specified in the video by him. this means a lot to me in the process of completing my research because I don't have the facilities to do such research. This is a video clip that is very meaningful in showing disorders of the motor system and the plan he gave about muscle tension training is great. This video clip deserves a giant diamond in a jumble of millions of youtube bullshit. Thank you very much for the valuable information you shared

    Fascinating 30 minutes. I'm working on my third read through of Back Mechanic and I still can't find my exact posture and movement triggers. Just going with neutral, more careful movement, and less over-bracing. If that won't work, then I really should go so a master mcgill clinician.

    Great information and a great job explaining so that laymen can understand. Could you please speak on spinal stenosis? I have low back pain due to spinal stenosis and sciatica. Currently, I do not have leg pain. The pain is only in my low back. I can't walk no more than 5 minutes and I lean or hoover over everything from shopping carts to kitchen counters at 53 years old. I would like to be able to stand up straight and walk 10,000 steps a day and never take walking for granted for the rest of my life. How do I reverse spinal stenosis?

    Trying to learn as much as I can from you. I herniated a disc while doing bent over rows with 135lbs and have been basically bed ridden for months. Gets better then I cough or do so yard work and I'm out for another week or two. Pain is possibly the worst of my life.

      @@2Kingstar8 I did McGill's Exercises and gave it some time and now I'm back to mostly normal. Scared to do any deadlifts or bent over rows but no pain anymore. It was a crap experience that I don't want to repeat. Best pain relief was Ice, Icy Hot Cream (ideally after a hot shower), then later I found Voltaren cream that was good.

      Got extremely bad muscle spasms for about a week that would literally drop me to the floor in horrible pain, doctor gave me muscle relaxers and I took one every night for 7 days then they stopped.

      First spasm, I was carrying hot coffee in the morning and coughed causing a spasm, then lost all control of my body, hit the floor like a rock and spilled the coffee everywhere.

    There was a NASCAR driver who used the same principle of stiffness to race from 10th to 5th in the final lap... he jammed the side of the car against the wall and gunned it. The stiffness of the wall kept his car under control so he could keep the pedal to the metal as he went around the oval. He zoomed past everyone, though the move is now considered illegal (it demolished the side of his car too)

    I read both books (Low Back Disorders and Ultimate Back Fitness) years ago. Recently, when I developed some back pain again (though in this case it wasn't in the lumbar spine, but a thoracic issue) I realized I had been neglecting virtually all of the basic principles for maintaining spine health mentioned here, like stiffening the back during load, as well as some of those mentioned in the books, like giving the vertebral discs time to stabilize after sitting for long periods. I just keep being amazed by how accurate the advice is, and how perilous it is to forget it. I highly recommend giving both books a read to anyone suffering from similar issues.

    Dr McGill, I'm just about to finish your Lower Back Disorders book from like 2002, great stuff. I noticed you wanted to throw away the isometric psoas major exercise because you said the psoas major does have to do with lower back instability/pain. When would be a good time to strengthen the psoas major? Is it completely separate from lower back disorders?

    Mr. MacGill, can I ask you a question? at 15:24 you mean that hypomobility of c6-C7 OR c5-C6 creates instability above segments so pain is occurring due to that?

      The box wasn’t what hurt you. You were lifting wrong your entire life and wore the disc out. The box was just the straw that broke the camels back. Kinda like if your car hits one pothole you’ll be fine, but if you hit potholes all the time eventually one small little bump could blow your strut

    If someone has very bad front rignt hip pain & glute pain , What specific
    Psoas stretch would you perform before starting the big 3? I had a cortisone shot in my lower lumbar discs ; it didn’t provide any relief. Months later I received another cortisone shot in my right si joint & felt immense relief. Unfortunately it’s worn off & im back to barely walking. Pain / discomfort in every strep. Prior to this I tried spinal decompression & the doctor would also aggressively use this massage gun on my right hip. After weeks I had to stop because I was limping my right leg/ barely putting weight on it. dr told me we had to “loosen it up.” but he was a load of shit.. I’m so what walking without a limp now but My lower lumbar hurts so fucking much. (Herniated disc @ l4-l5 & l5-S1.)

    to the great spine Dr.
    l lifted a concrete column and there after developed left ear vertigo. and right neck spasms it been 3 yrs now .my imbalance is now due to ny neck spasm. my ear vertigo has gone after two yrs doing bppv manuevre. l still have a pain at top of scm just under the right ear.and slight pain of neck muscle that run down to the shoulder ( slight pain to finger press). l have tried many things from physio chroprac medications and ytube related issue but havent progress. the pull release spasms makes my head wobble. do u have any vdo which could free me from this neck spasms and imbalance?

      It is addressed. In gift of Injury. It entails strategic loading followed by 3-5 days rest to allow new bone adaptations to occur. It seems that the magic is in the correct dose and allowing the rest in between. He uses the high level powerlifters and strongman as wise training habits to have 5 days rest between heavy loading and also frequent deloads to allow adaptations to occur. Brian Carroll's programming addresses this.

    Awesome! To add body adapts tention may travel up. I had years since my body learned how to block lower back pain in the cost of upper body chronic stiffness. It's may be a good price untill it goes up to the neck tentions. You can bring back upper body mobility in the cost of lower back pain. Only strong core may fix it. Hopefully.

    How would you explain Gymnast and Wrestlers? I Have done both. Wrestling a pretty high level. We are very Mobil and "Stiff" and Stable. Sit ups are extremely easy compared to what Ballet Dancers and Gymnast do. It doesn't fit with what you can see in Gymnast and Wrestlers. I personally know many Powerlifters her are quite mobil and Injury free

    Hello,
    I have a question regarding core engagement. I just recently had a microdiscectomy (5 days ago). And I had previously learnt how to engage my transverse abdominals correctly. My core is at its strongest it’s ever been and have learnt how to engage pretty much all the muscles around my torso (obliques, rectus abdominis, internal and external obliques). I wanted to know how much I should be engaging my core at this time and if there is any danger in engagement at all? I was worried I would put too much compression on my lower back by too much engagement. Or is it good that I am engaged, I’ve heard it supports your back like a internal corset. Could you advise please?

    Question, I had to have discectomy and 3 years later a fusion because of a re-ruptured L4/L5 Disc where I could not stand or walk. Right after surgery all sciatic pain was gone and I could stand and walk. But now at 4 months post fusion, my back kills me when I lean forward only an inch or so and when I straighten backup. Anytime my spine twist or bends it kills. Once back straight after the initial jolt of pain it stops. I have bought the back mechanic book and videos and have been doing the Big 3 with some pain. But mainly just walking. UP hill hurts and sometimes my feet landing hurts but sometimes no pain walking. At 4 months my surgeon could not give me any information other than, we can't tell from an xray if you are fusing. Stop all PT and Come back in 2 months we will do a CT Scan if you are not better. He almost seems like he can't understand why my back has no stability? He said the xrays look good there is no Halos on the screws but I am not feeling any better than I did 2 weeks out of surgery. I was so far ahead, off all medicine even tylenol by the 4th day. So looking for someone that can figure out what is really going on. Non Drinker, Smoker non Diabetic. Is it a fusing issue or what. The pain is right in the spine and on both sides. Sometimes I feel pain in the hips and gluts but not down the legs. I am amazed that aa surgeon would not at least watch you move a little bit or ask to see you pick up something or manipulate your body to see what is really causing the pain.

      I'm sorry, I went through something similar, but I didn't want to have surgery 2 years ago, the pain was terrible and unbearable, and it is impossible for me to have a normal life yet, but I discovered yoga and I started with it and I took Dr. Mcgill and I'm improving. But additionally, I recommend that you seek help from Dr. Joe Dispeza, perhaps he is the piece you are looking for in your healing. On his page there is help with healers, they have given me two and I have improved dramatically, I couldn't even sleep, I was drugged and in pain, the best response from the specialists was to have surgery or clench your teeth. It seems like no one has any idea what's going on in the column, or sometimes it seems like they know but don't want to help. Either way, seek help from Dr. Joe, I assure you that you can help yourself a lot with real help as expressed in this video.

      I had a SI-Joint unstability and I found a good practical approach (a lot of work in fact) at "Precision Movement" (App ROM)
      A kinesiologist formed by McGill in Canada with Supervision of a orthopedic surgeon..
      They have videos dedicated to the SI-joint
      Translating some knowledge at once in healings routines.. so that it does not stay trapped in the cognition only.

    Is anybody familiar with how an injury in the lower back can affect the groin/genital region? I developed various symptoms that I wasn't at all considering the cause being the back injury until a urologist suggested that it may be. Eventually the symptoms went away, but 2 years later for almost 2 months now I've been having very similar issues again. I honestly thought it was an std or something but I tested negative for all of the major ones and my mom told me that she thinks it's probably the same thing I experienced before, caused by the back injury. I just found out about Dr. McGill two days ago since she suggested that it was my back issue, and doing some of his exercises has already helped. But the groin symptoms aren't fully relieved and it has also affected my skin as it did the first time around which is also mentally distressing for me..

    But to think about it my pain inatially started in 2000 when I was 19 because I used a sledge hammer for hrs and after that my back was never the same

    I've been facing a bit of a problem with leg power. I've been trying to fix my anterior pelvic tilt by stretching and rolling my quads and psoas especially. I hit my calves too. When I do my cardio like the bike, my quads want to give out before my aerobic capacity does. Is this possibly why? I want to know what I'm potentially missing especially since I train clients. I obviously don't want to hurt my clients.

      maybe you're biking too fast or with too much resistance. Try slowing down. Stretching has been shown to reduce muscle performance temporarily however so it could be that.

      You might need to work on your pedaling / bike setup. You should drive with your glutes not your quads. So if you have only quad soreness none in glutes or hammys it could be part the problem.

    Doc can I do front planks instead of the modified curl up when doing the Big 3? Because I have a flexed thoracic spine and can't touch my head to the floor when I lay on my back.

      yes u can, I read a lot of his podcast and I read his book back Mechanic... Front plank could be a good exercice to replace the modified curl up. The only negative point of front plank is it might compromise shoulder integrity long term.

      you can do stirr the pot excercise if you like. but you can do the curl up with a pillow under your head if you like, you have to get the shoulder blades of the floor while keeping lumbar neutral - thats the main point.

    I don’t have low back pain. But I get lower back pumps. Like my back seems to over work and get crazy tight. Do you think this is because lazy glutes? Even just leaning towards the mirror while shaving I get a low back pump.

      Probably part of it. But it sounds like you also have instability which will have the wrong muscles doing all the work. Stabilizing muscles likely are in spasm.

    Couldn’t we explain the injury during fluoroscopy as a pain inhibition from excessive muscular strain of the paraspinals allowing for the flexion at 2-3? I find a good way to tell the difference on exam to be a supported lumbar flexion. If you support the upper body upon flexion and the pain goes away, it’s muscular. If the pain persists, it’s discogenic. The visceral innervation also tends to give it a more diffuse localization.
    Overall, I wonder if we over attribute pain to structural abnormality vs neuromuscular dysfunction.

      i dont think deadlifting will fix back pain, i think it is much easier to increase it because it is a high risk movement if performed incorrectly, the pain is caused by something, a disk damage or more likely a muscular imbalance of some sort since the pain is not big enough to hinder you training, get help from a good pt or physical therapist to find it and work that weakness and pain away from there

    Given that you no longer see patients on a regular basis, do you know of any spine specialists trained in your method for assessment and treatment? I have been to many doctors that make little effort to test pain for pain triggers, and usually make conclusions based on MRI imaging only.

    Thank you Dr McGill. Oh, how I wish I had discovered you prior to my first back surgery! Does anyone know if hip flexibility is detrimental to building stamina/endurance and stability?
    Also, I've had two spine surgeries, seen multiple PT's. Considering how
    uniform these sub-standard approaches are (according to McGill) just
    WHERE are people supposed to go to get the level of expertise he insists
    upon?

      Shadow, why did you have to have 2 back surgeries? How is your back now? I had a discectomy a year ago and my back feels worse although I have no sciatic pain. I keep thinking I will need another as even doing McGills 3 exercises causes pain. I have to assume there is something inside causing pain.

      @@jake1783 Not really! Based on the surgeons I have spoken too, and the one that did the fusion. They think my L4/5 did not fuse which is causing pain when I bend or lift. I am probably headed for revision fusion. Just sort of waiting as long as I can. At least I can sleep and work pain free pretty much but doing anything physical sux. Thanks for asking.

    I’ve heard that the McGill method guys can be very restrictive and have gotten some criticism over the past few years. Does anyone know anything about this?

      i feel they avoid spine movement, and advise against any twisting of the spine at all, but in the real world we twist constantly, try to chop wood or snowboard without any twisting, it cant be done, he has an uc poster on the wall, try to kick without twisting

      Its because he talks about unnecessary twisting and flexing under load. He states many times "leave that for people with a virgin spine and for people who want to compete in flexion and twisting " but people cant understand his work. Twisting and flexing are fine if you are healthy and brace... but not if you have issues. It makes total sense but unfortunately people condense 32 years scientific study into "mcgill says not to flex"

      My facet joint right side l4/l5 is my problem. Side planks on that side irritate it. So i do full side on left , and the modified knees version on the right.
      Hopefully build up over time

I tried that with the modified knees too but didnt work... ended up with fusion... 7 weeks ago... just as I thought the disc had started rupturing again and finally right when covid hit the US... it was worse than its ever been. Feel 90% better now... doing Bird Dogs and some Dumbell stuff surgeon said no side planks yet.. not sure why but going to do what he says..

      update back hurts after doing any PT. Looking at Fusion probably in April of 2021. I hope this is my last back surgery and issue. I guess we will see.
