Really tried to be thorough with this cleaning guide. The PCDC videos are mostly time-lapses of the cleaning processes. I'll try to make one of these for each major PC component, though you'll find that it becomes fairly redundant after a while. IPA is great for PCBs and most plastics. Soap/water is good for radiators, fin stacks, and cases.
any good sites to find a cheap but reliable gpu for gaming? im looking at a evga geforce 1660 ti

@@travlessmarloon6238 Before opening it up, make sure you have the right thickness thermal pads because the original ones might disintegrate. You won't be able to put them back together without the pads.
I would be careful cleaning an amd chip on a table like that as the little gold pins are in the back. Maybe wouldn’t clean it on a table because of my clumsy huge hands.

Great content! Would it be possible to make a video about thermal pads? Like a buying guide for example. And compare the cheap stuff to the known brands. I've been refurbishing some graphics cards and many thermal pads get damaged and need to be replaced. But I'm having trouble finding decent cost effective ones here in Canada... You mentioned just painting over the chip on the VRM heatsink; would painting the entire thing be an issue for cooling?
is it necessary to use an antistatic brush for the motherboard cleaning, or I can just simply use a toothbrush or a paintbrush?
Very informational. My pc sometimes doesnt boot up just powers on but doesnt boot. Followed your instructions and it worked like a charm ! Its perfectly fine now and the heat dissipation was a lot better thanks !

Thank you! I got an almost 6 year old laptop that I never cleaned on the inside before. It started to get some overheating issues about 2 years ago so I took a look inside and it looks like I used the poor thing as a vacuum lol

is it a good idea to use a brand new soft baby toothbrush with IPA to clean the MOBO instead of using qtips only?
2 Question, first does the alcohol make any component to crack? I am millwright and when we use alcohol to clean up selector or push button they literally dry twist and crack in second after spraying alcohol on it. And when you push air onto the mobo is there any risk of pushing dust deep into the contact of the Pci-E or un-used ram slot?
Hey Greg, my AIO CPU Corsair cooler exploded when I was gone for a few weeks, and now I’ve got liquid all over my motherboard as well as the PCIe slots. Some of the liquid has dried inside the slots. What’s the best cleaning options for me?

Some of the reviews are hit/miss on it and wanted your general thoughts on the duster.

What a great video - thanks Greg. I have a couple of motherboards that I'll now be attending to :-) It would be great to see a short video about how to replace thermal pads rather than reuse the old ones. It can be a challenge to determine what thickness and type of replacement pad to buy in the first place. I imagine they're not easy to measure to find the correct thickness
Hey Mike. Thanks for watching. And part of the reason why I don't bother replacing old thermal pads (unless they're crusty/disintegrating) is because the thickness requirements are so ambiguous.
Just lather that compound on, and bust out your old blockbuster card to get a smooooth surface. Works like a charm. Actually been curious about the thermal pads, will probably give em a try soon
don't forget removing the cmos battery to minimize any chance of damage to the board
True but you'll lose bios settings. Not an issue if it's your computer but could be an issue if working on someone else's.
@@LeoInterVir maybe but usually I take photos of everything I do because if anything happens a customer can't blame me .. so some bios photos are good enough
@@AliYassinToma yup, always take photos. I also suggest having paperwork and initial besides descriptions.
@@LeoInterVir He'll lose the settings if he put the RAM in different slots too, if he (accidentally) swapped them over, as they have different ID numbers. Either way not a big issue, if the customer does not know a thing about PC's, chances are the bios is stock anyway, otherwise the customer knows how to put them back the way they like them.

So a long time ago i some fanta on top of my pc and almost all of it stayed on my filter of my case but some landed on my gpu backplate and on the board of the gpu which started to kind of rust. How can i clean this?

Do not use brake cleaner on PC parts. Some brake cleaners don't do well with plastic and rubber. IPA isn't that expensive anyways. Keep the brake clean for what it's meant for.

Soft car detailing brushes work well too for knocking dust off of motherboards too. Just had a vaccum near by sucking up the loose dust you're taking off. Works very well.
Don't get the vacuum too close, don't let static stop you.
Thank you! this was exactly the comment i was looking for. I dont wish to spend 60$ on the electric cleaner at this point in time, but I figured itd still be a good idea to use a brush in tandem with compressed air. Now I have a much cheaper alternative to buy!
I just used a detailing brush on all parts of my mobo and dusted it. I did it without an anti static band. I was getting a boot LED post light after. Kept booting into the BIOS and BSoD if I tried to enter Windows 10. I am not 100% sure what the actual problem was because I finally did a a random action, which was do a system restore and it fixed it. I am not sure if it was static and "released" because resetting the CMOS didn't fix it, but it works now
Hi Greg, 99% alcohol is illegal in my country, the most I can get is 70%, are there any alternatives?
Greg brake cleaner evaporates like alcohol, but is pretty harsh stuff. I think the safer option we see regularly is actually a multi-purpose lubricant spray, like WD-40. It's non-conductive, as many oils are, so much safer to use on electronics. But a lot messier, definitely prefer alcohol.
I've noticed that WD40 makes things for electric work. I wonder how that would be to clean computers.
To add, most Brake Clean formulas will also dissolve/blister/melt some plastics/polymers and paints/coatings, so it is possible to severely damage computer parts. WD-40 is an option for really nasty/caked up grime, but it will leave the oil residue that will in turn attract more grime, so you have to follow up with alcohol.
The best option would be to use CRC brand '05103 QD Electronic Cleaner', which you can generally pick up at a local chain auto-parts store or Walmart (Just search CRC QD Electronic Cleaner). It's a petroleum and alcohol based cleaner, so it not only washes out grime, it also cleans contact surfaces and coats surfaces to further help prevent grime/corrosion build up. Comes in a pressurized can, like Brake Clean or a Canned Air Duster, with a nozzle/tube. Lastly, it is also non-conductive.

Please respond to this question bro..I have a PS3 slim that I have cleaned with nail polish remover and a toothbrush because when I would try to turn it on, it beeps and doesn’t function. The disc drive doesn’t open, the system won’t boot and nothing happens with the video output. When I took it to a junky electronic repair shop, the guy said he cleaned it but here I am with a motherboard COVERED in roach eggs and some rust on the metallic edges. Is there a good chance that the motherboard is R.I.P. or is it recoverable? THIS PS3 is loaded with games and I spend a lot of money on tools/supplies. I am a repair dude and not scared to try anything to save myself more money here. If I have to, I will go looking for a PS3 slim motherboard but it would be inconvenient. They aren’t easy to find for me.

No. Do not apply any water to your electronics. They will die instantly since water causes a chemical reaction with the board and it will corrode. Alcohol will not corrode the board if it makes contact and it will evaporate quickly.

When it comes to cleaning electronics, IPA is your best friend.

Swirl marks over the metal are from not changing the Q-tip frequently enough to the carry smudged IPA dust muck.

How do u prevent static electricity from build up on hand before cleaning
Touch something metal, like your PC case with PSU plugged into a grounded wall socket, with the PSU in the off mode. Don't wear woolen clothes or cause too much friction before cleaning electronics. Or get an expensive anti-static bracelet that doesn't really help that much. If static electricity kills components, it's not the static electricity you are carrying, but the tools and interaction between them and the electronics.

@@sijedevos2376 I would say yes. The hardest part is going to be finding a gpu at a decent price. I got lucky and got a 1070ti after the first mining boom died out for $270, but I really don’t know how long it will be with this one...

Its important to clean your pc from time to time. Depending on your location, sometimes dust and humidity come together, and believe me, you don’t want dust to stick into your components. Thats when sulfate comes into place and those are major problems.
What do you mean by "sulfate"? I know that's a sulphur/oxygen anion (SO4--), but what it has to do with the combination of moisture and dust?
@@RussellTeapot man, sorry for my bad English. I meant corrosion, when copper turns greenish. At least here in Perú we battle a lot with humidity and dust which some times forms “crusts” inside the electronics and starts corroding the copper lanes.
@@diegomorales4028 ahhh ahaha ok, don't worry, I'm Italian, and sometimes the brain goes wherever it wants with foreign languages. Now it makes perfect sense: I suppose the dust acts like a sort of "sponge" trapping humidity, hence the corrosion. Fortunately where I am (South Italy) we don't have that much humidity, but I've seen pretty bad copper corrosion aswell
(Side note regarding brain farts while dealing with foreign languages: I originally wrote "bed" instead of "bad", fortunately I noticed it)
