FYI he's not prophetic, you have to understand we live in a engineered society ( almost everything except the weather is pre-planned) so if a artist knows about these plans he will included them in his lyrics as much as he can . So it comes off as future telling when in reality it's snitching on the elite planners. For reference look up books like ( Americans secret destiny, by Ralph Epperson) or the new wold order by the same author. So in short these plans have been in place for a looong time what's delayed it is the unavailable technology. But now with smart phones and humanoid robots it's all ready , enter co vid and shutdowns .
This song was inspired by the 1992 riots in Los Angeles over the beating and arrest of Rodney King. Cohen, being generally very pessimistic by nature, saw this as the future of the western world. He might not have been wrong with that assessment.
Nothing to do with Rodney king , it was a warning ⚠️ for what the elite had planned for the year 2000 but had to delay it due to protests in the 90s against globalization in every major city. But post 2020 the plans are back , the plan is a world 🌎 control over the entire population ( Like the Chinese have over their slaves ) with a severe population reduction. A new 1000 years of slavery, that's why he says ( abort another fetus now we don't like children any how ) this is not los angeles riots related but planned parent hood and the plan to have forced abortions like China.
Cohen always changes things up on his lyrics when he's performing. I watched an interview where he said there are at least 75 verses to "Hallelujah" but he doesn't really know because he hadn't finished writing it yet. He knew when he went to the mic he would sing 4 or 5, but until he was actually into it, he never knew which they would be, or even what order they would be in. I've heard 7 or 8 verses and the most in a performance was 6.
Oh man, Leonard Cohen's wonderful, such an enormous catalogue of poems and music. This track is so excellent, written after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I especially love "I'm Your Man", "If It Be Your Will", "Famous Blue Raincoat", and "Anthem". His stuff can be so immensely heavy, and pessimistic at times, but there's so much beauty in his writing.
Fluffy Walrus 1000 Kisses deep from Live at O2 is worth a listen/watch in context of the rest of the concert, half way through you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium.
HIS LAST SONG THAT HE PUT OUT 2 MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED WAS CALLED (YOU WANT IT DARKER). HE WAS 82 YEARS OLD. ITS LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER HEARD. ITS AMAZING.
Leonard Cohen & Nick Cave are two of my favorites, some people cite David Bowie & The Beatles, but those guys are closer to me. Def gotta watch some of the Live In London performance, especially since it’s so recent-recorded in 2008. Some of my favorite Cohen songs are “Stories Of The Street,” “Teachers,” “Waiting For A Miracle,” “First We Take Manhattan,” & “You Want It Darker.” There’s a good MTV interview on RUclips with Leonard Cohen while he was touring in support of The Future album.
I'm a HUGE Leonard Cohen fan and this was the first time I've heard this. My top 3 Cohen songs are "Hallelujah" (of course), "If It Be Your Will", and "Joan of Arc".
Joan of Arc is the shit. Let's Sing Another Song Boys is also mind blowing. I also love Dress Rehearsal Rag if you don't mind songs about suicide. Shit, we'll be here all day if i name all of his masterpieces. I'll stop.
YES! Another song from the great Leonard Cohen! Thank you for doing one of my all-time favorite songwriters. And writers in general. (And I'm very curious about sharing my music and writing in a full Patreon fashion, but that's a whole other thing I'll email you guys about soon :) )
He actually was famous first as a poet (many books), then a novellist (2) and only at 32 did he write and record some songs. Always just so-so in the USA, he WAS hugely famous in Canada and Europe (in Norway and Poland as soon as he put out a record it went to #1). He lived in Greece (island of Hydra) for 6 years. And if you think real hard Vin you'll understand my name and picture. btw Vin: you have a lot of knowledge and speak the truth: good on you!
You have to listen to "thanks for the dance" and cry. The song was recorded after he died, he had left the voice recordings and his family helped finishing the album
Please listen i started in late 60.s listening.to him he s a master of words dn t underestimate him. I think.you have to be aware of life ive read so much of cohen s work make what you will but he s not afraid to speak his truth. Debbie Wales .. U.k.
I hope these two will do more Leonard Cohen. They are very good at reflecting on the lyrics of a song, and this is of course a perfect match with Cohen, who always was, first and foremost, a poet.
I bought this album when it came out because I was a huge Leonard Cohen fan back then. A coworker friend of mine came into work to tell me that he saw Cohen singing this on the Tonight Show. He said that afterwards, Cohen told Jay Leno: Thanks for cutting my seven-minute long song to four minutes. Leno replied, saying: Well, thank you, Mr. Cohen, for compromising your standards to be on our show. I thought that was pretty funny.
I hope you guys review Tom Waits too. Another prolific artist with a similar style. I'm glad you're reviewing Leonard Cohen too. You'll find no shortage of good lyrics to sort through!
He was great. Just look at the tribute concert after his death in which the Prime Minister of Canada was present. Artists who praised him included Sting, Elvis Costello, Courtney Love and more
Leonard Cohen is one of the few real poets, meaning he was not really a musician, to have a number of international hits. He started out making a name for himself in the beatnik movement and usually writes in deep and intricate metaphors, often dark and/or intimate themes. Vin would probably love his older work just for the awesome metaphors. :)
I had a conversation with Armando in the comments of the John Prine video about a few important artists. He mentioned he would request a Leonard Cohen soon but that after that and one or two others he would get to the person I consider to be the greatest lyricist of all time, Townes Van Zandt, who was a part of the outlaw country sub-genre. I know you all don't get to songs from comments all that often, but I'd love to see some Townes covered by you all. I'd personally love to see either Rake, Tecumseh Valley or Lungs show up on here. Tecumseh Valley is one of my favorite songs of all time, but it's more a narrative and doesn't get across how genius a writer he was as the other two do. Rake (live version from 1969) would be my preference but the song Lungs is one of his two most famous and it has close to 2 million views. Pancho and Lefty by him might have even more, and that song is great, too. It's doubtful you two will get to this regardless, but there are some solid options. Anyway, I love Leonard Cohen and I don't want to take the space and not say that and say his early stuff, when he was young and his voice a bit more conventional, he wrote an incredible song named Suzanne that's also worth checking out.
Vin and Sori, watch some of his interviews, the coolest guy ever and the best song writer ever.... in my opinion, try some other songs of his, Joan of arc, famous blue rain coat, last years man, Suzanne , chelsea hotel 1, masters song and lots lots more. Cheers

LC is my favorite singer-song-writer. In the early days he was dirty, gravelly, folk like Bob Dylan (don’t kill me BD fans) but more tortured by or vocal about personal betrayal than systemic betrayal...and then he grew into his voice and his opinions of systems (I really do love you, BD). LC incorporates a lot of biblical and historical allusions and i find that his lyrics evoke an agnostic questioning and inspection. I HATE ever mentioning the over-covered song he wrote - but if you haven’t heard it you should - if not only to know who wrote that song. Also anything in the I’m Your Man documentary/tribute should be heard (as covered and original).
I think he achieved his goal to create an unease with his lyrics in this song. Your faces told the story. Cohen always has a message and some think he foresaw the future with this song. The music is at odds with the lyrics but it works so well.
I always believed the song was written on behalf, and from the sarcastic point of view, of the devil , same like "Sympathy for the devil" by the Rolling Stones. A cry for destruction and chaos. Still admitting that 'love is the only engine of survival". So simple.
Really enjoyed your thoughts on this stuff. Heavy subject matter, and refreshing to see it spoken of honestly and without the chains of external political ideology limiting perspective, but rather an actual free thought based examination that quickly exposes the extremes for the hypocrisy they invariably represent. The ultimate irony being that the attempts to enforce 'us vs them' belief systems end up destroying what these groups say they represent. LC was a genius at looking at the absurdity of the world, finding beauty in the darkness, and putting a crack in the wall so light could reach in.

Originally "Give me crack, anal sex" - but listen again to this performance, he has changed the lyrics, for the worse, in my opinion. The rougher the better. One of the best Cohen performances ever is the song PARTISAN live in Helsinki Finland 2008, excellent audio quality and arrangement. It's not his own song, like many believe, but a cover. In an interview Cohen said that his music at first was popular in Finland (and in Norway I think). Cohen's songs are often quite sad, and we Finns like sad songs, songs in minor. Swedes, for example, like songs in major, happy songs.
