Thank you for your prompt reply. Then my solution is to purchase the Sony a7Riii with the 24mm f1.4. Given the recent software updates to both Sony a7 cameras, what will I be l loosing with this solution? Background information: I am an enthusiast, taking pictures for travel, street, family events, & occasional portrait & landscapes.

I'm considering a change to a mirrorless and perhaps smaller, lighter camera ( I currently use NIKON Df ). I'm not interested in video. I'm not a pro but have an extensive art background ( both as a student and teacher ) and have seriously studied/used photography as a medium since 1955. I don't specialize when it comes to subject matter but have strong interest in faces ( up close ) and landscape ( from both near and far ). I want best possible image quality, prefer full-frame, am leaning towards the smaller-than-traditional sizes , appreciate good build quality, ergonomics, weather-sealing, efficient viewfinder and interface, and so on. I've looked at the FUJI XT-3, NIKON Z6, PANASONIC S1, and SONY A73 ( including in your videos ) and find them all interesting ( much for the same reasons that you do ). I'm intrigued by the A73 - FE 24mm 1.4 combination ( thanks to your video ). I'm curious to know if the A73 ( as your current choice as best all-around in class ) would be your suggestion for me given my non-interest in video. I realize it will come down to what my personal preferences are but would still appreciate your comment and opinion. Thank You.
I still recommend A7 III as the best all-round package. If you only shoot stills, A7R III or IV might be worth considering especially with these new GM lenses.
Another great review. I've been a long time subscriber. Please keep these reviews coming. I have a question regarding the image quality with this lens & camera when shooting in Super 35 mode (I know the file size reduces to 10Mb from 24Mb). If you don't "pixel peep", is the Super 35 resolution still good, even for printing A4 sizes photos? I prefer a 35mm lens for outside pics but 24mm for indoor pics. Thank you in advance for your response. Best regards, Morrie
Thank you! Using Super35 mode is the same thing as heavily cropping the pictures, so it definitely decreases the image quality. It is enough for A4 prints, but definitely not as good as in full frame mode.
What is your opinion on the A7R IV thus far? I'm curious about your initial impressions. Also. I currently have a G85 and I'm considering upgrading to either the G9 or GH5 with the idea that I'd use the G9 for photography and as a B cam to GH5 when I eventually get both. Which is the better all rounder and which should I purchase first?
Also I love your videos! I follow some other camera based RUclipsrs but your channel is consistently the one I come to for detailed tests and comparisons. Thanks for helping me learn about this big beautiful world of cameras!
It probably uses scaled up Fujifilm X-T3 sensor which is already great in APC-S version, so I expect the best full frame image quality. It is stills oriented camera, so no 4K 60p and 10-bit video is acceptable IMO. I don't care much about raised buttons, but I am very disappointed by 2005 style menu in Mk. IV Sony cameras. I would probably recommend getting two GH5 if you intend to shoot video a lot it is much better video camera overall.
@@TheHybridShooter I intend on doing a pretty even split between photography and videography. Is the GH5 capable enough in photography that I wouldn't need the extra photography features from the G9? And what do you think the next M43 Lumix camera will be? G10? GH6?
Yes, I would say that GH5 is sufficient even for 50/50 hybrid shooting. I have no idea what will be the next Panasonic M43 camera but GH series is probably due for upgrade.
I would have love to see video shots with this lens on aps-c crop mode (equivalent 36 f 2.1?). The resolution will be lower but if shot in 4k, it might be more than acceptable overall ?
I'm surprised you didn't discuss the omission of a focusing scale with hyperfocal markings. In my opinion, that omission on Sony's part is inexcusable.
Really appreciated this review as I am currently considering buying this lens. Could you comment on the this lens compared to the Fe 28 f2 please? Also you did not mention lens flaring so I am assuming it was not a problem for you. I am debating between this lens or the Tamron 17-28 f,2.8 ( if it ever is in stock) as my wide angle lens but the GM definitely appeals. I do own the 28f.2 lens- would that be redundant with the 24? Thank you for all your amazing videos - you have helped me and many others a lot!
It is much better lens optically in every way. 28mm is probably more all-round usable focal length, 24mm is more interesting focal length IMO. I bought 24mm F1.4 instead of 17-28 because of that unique F1.4 wide angle look.
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. I am definitely leaning toward getting the GM lens over the Tamron as I think that it will be more satisfying experience all around.
You said its completely silent but can I ask you if you try to focus at f4 or higher in a low light situation does yours make a noise, lot of ppl have complained about this. Including myself
Do you hear mechanical whirring when aperture > 2 and doing auto-focus? I've noticed that after I bought it and looks like a common problem with this lens. I am using it on a7RII. I have seen online that the silent auto-focus option seems to work with a7III and above.

That depends on what and how you shoot and also how you publish your pictures. 85mm F1.4 is completely different lens, so that also depends on your needs.

My Tamron 28-75mm and Sony 85 1.6 doesn't do it on narrow apertures.
Yeah, that is probably caused by the lack of light at F16 in combination with focus breathing. Tamron has problems with focus breathing so it probably does the same in terms of the focusing but you can't see it.
