  • Which era led to the downfall of Cartoon Network? This question is up for debate but in this video I talk about an era that I think makes a solid case in being responsible for killing the network that we all love.

Yup, I remember this. I also remember that the network cancelled Toonami and put Star Wars The Clone Wars on the Friday Night death slot. Fast forward to 2023, and Star Wars The Clone Wars became a cult classic, while Toonami and Adult Swim are singlehandedly keeping Cartoon Network's channel afloat. Goku and Luffy are generational icons now. Where are all the CN Real shows that replaced Toonami and Star Wars? They've been off the air for 15+ years now, and Cartoon Network is getting buried by Warner Bros. The mistakes of 2007-2008 were so bad that it took shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Steven Universe to right the ship...and then 2015 came around and the channel started the bad business practice of oversaturating the network with one show in TTG. Its been a downhill spiral ever since

100% accurate. Yeah basically to sum it up cartoon network was shit and then they fixed their attitude with good animated shows again and then after that the network forgot about the lesson to have good quality content and now here we are in 2023. So yeah it was shit then it was good and then straight back to shit *sighs* when will they learn..

@@Walid-mk4jo Star Wars ALONE seems more lucrative than Cartoon Network as a whole right now. The big rigs at Cartoon Network have to be kicking themselves whenever they see how much traction it has over at Disney right now. Its not just the shows that are gone like Star Wars, One Piece, and Dragon Ball. Even the shows Cartoon Network still have are being held back by questionable creative. Imagine what Disney could do if they acquired Ben 10. They could make an entire cinematic thriller akin to MCU using Ben 10, Generator Rex, and the Secret Saturdays. But instead, Cartoon Network gave us the 2016 reboot. And don't even get me started on the atrocity that's Thundercats Roar.

A perfect analogy that sums up this chain-of-events is Conquest's of Napoleon Bonaparte everything was great till the "Peninsula War" which while not fatal, still gave the French a bloody noise, then the invasion of "Russia" which torn the Grand Army to shreds and left Napoleon unable to recover. the parallel is all to easy to see, everything went great for "Cartoon Network" up until the "Yes Era" which as you said came off as a "slap to the face" to us fans and finally to this the "Fall Era " Stuart Snyder wrongfully thought he could tap into "live-action" programming and tackle it just as well as Nick and Disney had only to be absolutely decimated i repeat DECIMATED!

My point exactly Murray. I remember talking about this era with my friends before and they agree to how you explained it as well. I think Betty Cohen and Jim samples deserved much praise for helping the renaissance of what made CN so special after Ted Turner made it possible. From 1999-2006 Cartoon Network had legit hit home run with CN city and Cartoon Cartoon Friday’s with MUST WATCH heavy hitters that’s just hard to ignore especially great underrated classics that carried the renaissance of the network until the Fall Era completely changed it.

Excellent video Murray! Your series of reviewing all the CN eras have been excellent! I also wanted to point out, but around this time frame, Fridays got cancelled in place of Fried Dynamite (Friday nights) and Dynamite Action Squad (Saturday Mornings) which were awful replacements, this marked the end of the Fridays era that had been going on since 1999, and because Fridays was the only night left CN had a 24 hour day... CN no longer had a 24 hour day after Fridays cancellation. Adult Swim became 7 nights a week like it still is to this day.
TOM 4 debuted on Toonami and that was the beginning of the end of the block on CN before its cancellation the following year. The block's lineup became weak and was just Naruto marathons. I started middle school when the Fall era debuted so the timing was just right! Middle school was rough times for me, and so was the Fall era of CN as well! The Powerhouse and City eras were simpler times, which were basically my time in elementary school when I didn't realize how easy I had it then!

In my opinion, regardless to how both the yes and fall era was received by not doing fans any favors especially with used of live action programming, their is no doubt that the new lineup of shows that would premiere such as chowder, flapjack, Class of 3000 and total drama would help paved the way while the other og shows from the cartoon cartoons era would still be shown as reruns along with shows that would still be in production until being cut or finished in 2008 like Edd Edd Eddy and Ben 10. Plus lets not forget one of the best crossovers that happened in 2007 such as the grim adventures of the KND.

as a Hives fan... tbh I think they only brought them onboard because of the uniforms.
for those who don't know, The Hives have a strict black-and-white dress code. in every public appearance, they'll only wear those two colours. literally, the album they were promoting that year was called "The Black And White Album"!!
so I kinda figure the CN executives looked at it and went "hey, these guys are basically wearing our logo already!! let's ask them for a song." considering another gimmick of theirs is that every song is credited only to an evil, shadowy figure known as Randy Fitzsimmons (RIP), that's even more amusing.
also they have nicknames. the singer is Howlin' Pelle, if you wanted an easier name for him 😭
so yeah, they might not be the best fit for a cartoon channel, but you can't say they're not a bit cartoony anyway!!

My God, yet I still don't know what year started the downfall to Cartoon Network, and let's be honest, they should know there's a reason why some things shouldn't even be made/existed, or in Teen Titans, Looney Tunes, Powerpuff Girls, or any other shows cases, rebooted since nothing good ever actually comes from them, even some shows before the downfall happened, well some episodes, weren't so great either, no wonder they call it bad writing. Also, just like with Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, I wanted those respective channels, along with Cartoon Network to go back to the way they were.

Stu Snyder is an awful person to go lead the network given he had zero experience with the network and CN is about cartoons not live action which he tried to do because Nick and Disney was successfully doing it but that’s a completely wrong decision given that’s not what the channel is supposed to be about. Let’s jot forget that he is racist as well. But to be honest as much as I don’t like him, Christina Miller was a far worser president. CN had a huge renaissance in the early to mid 2010’s thanks to shows like Adventure Time and Gumball but it was her obsession with Teen Titans Go that ruined the network in my opinion given it lead to a lot of awful reboots which lead to CN being what it today: A shell of itself. CN will always be my favorite out of the three channels and I do hope it can make a comeback but the WBD merger is ruining it thanks to David Zaslav’s greedy ass.

Jim Samples may have been a great president of Cartoon Network but he was the one who started the live action trend. He was the one that greenlighted Out of Jimmy's Head. His plan was supposed turn Cartoon Network into being more kid oriented as Disney and Nick likely a balance between cartoons and live action. But when Stuart Snyder came in he basically just took some of that stuff Jim left on the table and just ran with it only he prior live action over animation.
