Nike has opened up many opportunities for skater owned shops. Nike SB's sell, period. This allows skate shops to make more money and in turn order more gear from other skater owned companies, and it pushes for greater footwear technology in skateboarding. Look at the big picture.

Us as skateboarders dont intend to sue if we get hurt. we know that its our own fault. but for the younger children that have parents that dont understand they might sue the company. although think of it this way. coffee has a sign. caution may be hot. so if you burn yourself its your fault. so signs at spots. no skateboarding. if we hurt ourselves. we were warned not to skate there and cant sue. so business owners have no right playing that card. or mcdonalds should tell you not to drink coffee

Everyone watching this should read Thomas Frank's "One Market Under God"-in it, he talks about how Nike marketers in the late 90s had trouble selling products to skateboarders, because they thought of Nike as the "man." So they made these commercials aligning themselves with the skateboarders AGAINST the man (the police,society), and the shoes were a hit. Just another example of how subcultures can be swallowed up by dominant society/corporations.

We aren't doing what we do because there's some million dollar contract on the line, or to prove how much better we are than each other. Skateboarding is above being some stuck-up sport. It's an art. The reason skaters aren't treated the same is mostly because almost all blaze. As one who enjoys that myself I don't see the issue there, but many disagree with that form of recreation. One people see a skater, and a smoker then are melded in their mind.

I'm a skater myself and I dont really look at it as a sport. It is so much more than that! It's a disciplinary form of art. For one there are no rules! What other sport offers that flexibility? Sports are all about scoring point and getting the job done, but in skating it's not only about doing the trick but it's also about style. There's so much personality in it. Feel me?

I'm not sure which way you mean leagues, but you have different subsections of skateboarding (Trick boarding(Vert, Street, Flatland) Longboarding (Downhill, Freeriding, Boardwalking/Dancing) Then if you mean leagues as in groups, what do you call skateboard teams?
Shit, I can stop just as quick on a skateboard as someone jogging can. Not to say there aren't plenty of skaters who do stupid things and end up getting hit. That's usually because they aren't taking the proper precautions when it comes to avoiding traffic.

Now, most people think its ridiculous to assume such a thing. Are some skaters jerks/destructive? Sure. So are SOME people of every race/cultural background. But to automatically assume just because they belong to that group means they are a bad person is ridiculous.
if i'm honest i'm fine with anyone doing sports but if a runner or a skateboarder comes speeding past and gets in the way i'm going to be pissed off. we should respect them and give them more areas.

Its true. in Carlisle PA, if the cops catch anyone skateboarding they confiscate your board and depending where ur at, you can get a $75+ ticket.
