    There are 128 tribes in Tanzania and not 200. About 98% of Tanzanians speak Swahili. Majority recognize it as their first language. Mwalimu Nyerere promoted unity of Tanzanians through Swahili. He influenced other countries around Tanzania to speak Swahili including Kenya.
    The word for the Swahili language is Kiswahili. Sawahili is the plural for the Arabic word sahil, which means ‘coast’. Ki- at the beginning means coastal language. This is because Swahili arose as a trade language along the coastline originated in Unguja, Zanzibar, Tanzania and is also best spoken along the coast. In 1928, the Zanzibar dialect called Kiunguja was chosen as the standard Swahili in Kamusi (Swahili Dictionary).
    Swahili is the lingua franca (a common language adopted between two non-native speakers) of the East African Union and is the official language of Tanzania (official language), Kenya (official language next to English) and of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also widely spoken in Uganda and, in smaller numbers, in Burundi, Rwanda, North Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.

    As an outsider, I don't understand the animosity between modern Kiswahili speakers in this comments section.
    But safe to say, it rarely makes sense to pinpoint exactly where such dynamically evolving languages "start". Clearly English has incorporated many things from Old Norse, French, and other languages throughout its evolution. The same seems to be the case for Kiswahili, with trade, religion, and cultural exchange shaping a highly adaptive Bantu language with potential of growing into a lingua franca, which in itself surely would bring in new influences in the process.

    • @qerysir4410
      @qerysir4410 4 года назад +4

      Acceptability is the factor! However much the language originates from E.A region, no particular ethnic group/tribe can clain it. There are about 60+ tribes in TZ and 40+ tribes in KE but each with its own mothertongue. Infact East Africans speak Swahili as a second language and there's no such tribe as Swahili but there's the Swahili culture/lifestyle, a derivative culture just like ghetto culture.
      If Hausa was to be picked as Africa's lingua franca then one ethnicity, the Hausa tribe, would be exalted above all others and that would be resisted by many Africans. Zulus will advocate for Zulu, Yorubas for Yoruba, Igbo for Igbo, in the end no consensus would be reached.
      Swahili is the only option that has no ethnic inclination and therefore no question of dominance!

    • @dawud7864
      @dawud7864 4 года назад

      @@qerysir4410 There is infact an ethnic group. The swahili people. A Common google search can help with that.
      Talking about commonality... If east Africans speak Swahili as a second language.. West Africans also speak Hausa as a second language. In Ghana... The largest Ethnic group is the Akan but u can easily move around with hausa which is not native to Ghana even tho west Africa is more ethnically diverse than any other part of the continent. Story for another day. Ghana with Just 30Mil. Ppl has over 70 difrnt ethnic groups.
      Secondly, I don't see east/south Africans anyday accepting to speak Hausa anytime/any day. Same way i don't believe in a united Africa is the same way I don't believe Speaking the same language is feasible for now... It wld be tho if we were to start region-aly. East Africa same language and a united country..same for west Africa and the other regional blocs.
