  • Eddy Zhong, successful technology entrepreneur, dives into the truth behind our K-12 education system. Eddy strongly believes that the education system diminishes creativity and confines children to a certain path towards success. He contends that kids are taught to believe college is a necessary step in life and that it is mandatory to achieve one's goals. His talk challenges the commonly held beliefs of our entire education structure. Eddy is the founder of Leangap, a summer program that helps high school students start their own companies
Eddy is an aspiring technology entrepreneur and the founder of Blanc, a smart-watch company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His ideas have been featured in numerous publications and he is passionate about empowering youth to think differently. This is why public schoolers laugh at homeschoolers for being dumb and yet those homeschoolers probably are more happy and successful now.

What kind of dumbasses laugh at homeschoolers? Less busywork, one single teacher who can actually focus more on yourself rather than having to micromanage 200 kids and they probably actually manage to learn something from it.

Pug Ieve That's the average line from an indoctrinated person. The socialization going on in schools is terrible. All 5 of my kids are home-schooled, and while most of the other kids are wasting their time in school, my 14 and 17 year old daughters are starting their own business... something you don't need school, or college to do...but they won't tell you that in school.

This is extremely true. One example: My brother is amazing at art. He's super talented, but he keeps getting Cs and Ds in art because he doesn't do what hes told. He challenges the teachers. There are people in his class who jave absolutely no skill, but get higher grades because the do exactly what they are told and don't think outside the box. The teachers are literally trying in limit children creativity *in an art room*

So much for the whole point of art eh!
Also, so much for school. If your brother loves art and is super-talented as you put it, he's probably not going to want to be a schoolteacher or a tax lawyer when he grows up, so what's he doing wasting his time in public school, which is designed specifically to turn people into 100% obedient robots, whereas expressive art is supposed to make people be/feel more human and less robotic and zombie-like?

@d R In all fairness, the greatest artists started out with imitation and repetition because that's how a skill set starts developing in the beginning. It's just that the best ones were able to 'run with it' rather than spending lots of time perfecting their imitation. They get what they need, and then start applying their own creativity.

This is literally how the assistant math teacher in my math class is like. He always acts so stern and strict, and I'm always afraid of asking for help from him cause he usually shames us for not knowing stuff, he also says these things to the class, "this should be easy for you" or "you should know this by now." Or "if you don't know how to do this, then you're screwed."
And I absolutely hate it, and sometimes the actual teacher is out of the classroom, so he has to teach on some days and I hate it.
The actual teacher is actually one of the best math teachers I've had, he's quite nice and fair to his students and his goal is to make us understand the lesson and is always willing to help us.

My dad once explained to me that if I got good grades all the time, and if I already knew everything, I'd feel like there'd be no more room to grow or improve myself, so he taught me to always use a bad grade or report as a learning experience. That's very true and insightful, but why does my C in algebra and chemistry make me feel and look like a failure if all I need to do is "do better?" I can't even really find what it is I'm doing wrong with my work, and I'm constantly trying to play catch up so that I can at least understand what the rest of the kids in my class are talking about, and I find myself sacrificing my time to do what I really love and want to pursue, like drawing and music, because I feel a constant desire to not "fail" all my classes. Maybe it's my time management or my mental state, but school really feels like it screws kids over a lot of the time. The American education system needs to change to accompany kids' abilities to be creative, critical, and collaborative, instead of drilling into our brains that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Totally agreed. In highschool and college I became really good at math. I was acing all my tests and exams and I felt good about myself. It wasn't until I was in the real world I realized how little of it I could actually apply.
I spent all this time learning how to manipulate and work with equations and problems that were neatly organized and tied in a bow for me to unravel. With zero training how to model these equations from real world data, how to figure out what relevant information you need to solve the problem and how to acquire it.
It felt like my whole life education was holding a nail for me and only training me how to swing a hammer to drive in the nail in straight. Then I got into the real world and realized I have no idea where to get the nail from, where to place it, how to hold it for myself and how to incorporate it into the problem that is a house I'm trying to build.
Then you go into the world and you're asked "well what do you know how to build ?" and you realize all you know how to do is swing a hammer and you're severely underprepared.

Teachers most of the time used to give more importance to the toppers or the losers but the average kid were always ignored. Go Eddy! So glad you found your path. I agree with you wholeheartedly - and I'm a teacher! I see kids come to school so wide-eyed and excited to learn, and all too often school just kills that in kids. We need to encourage kids to think outside the box. We need to LISTEN to kids. And we need to tap into their natural passion and curiosity. We will never have happy, satisfied, motivated and innovative people if we don't change our approach. I've been fighting the system from within for almost 40 years now. Creativity needs to be valued and encouraged. I hope I get a chance to do a TED talk about why creativity matters.

You know what our problem is? It seems like more and more people agree that things should change. Heck, I'm sure all 2,700 people that commented on this video think the school system should change. But obviously all we can do is complain it the comment section, and I hate it. We are so scared that the society won't listen to us, so we don't even try. I'm sure every single student that is currently in school (including me) wants to show this to teachers, parents, headmasters, but is too scared to do anything. There is enough of us now to have influence, to make a difference. But we are SCARED. that is the problem - we should first change our ways, our entire society...

I lost interest in school at the age of 9. So much of what we learned was useless. After seeing how my own children fared in school, I firmly believe that home schooling and life have more to offer a developing mind than school. My self taught knowledge from years of reading history, philosophy and learning random arts and crafts has enabled me to become an oldie who can have an inspirational conversation with young people today. An oldie whose input on a wide variety of topics is sought each week, and I only went to school until year 10.

I have worked for 50 years, raised a family and own my home. None of which relied upon knowing algebra, when Henry VIII created the church of England, or knowing and believing the mythology of my national history. Schools are for churning out useful workers for those who hold the purse strings. None of what is taught is done to broaden our minds or make us think.

100%, everything in this video is true. I've already learned so much more outside of school than I'll ever learn in school. I used to have tons of creativity and innovative ideas when I was younger, but now my mind feels dryer than a desert. I'm a sophomore in HS, and I feel that school has already stifled my creativity beyond repair. Children are significantly more creative than adults, and that's because they haven't been stripped of all their good ideas by school yet. School would be so much better if only they would stop with all of the assignments that focus on copying and remembering information, but exploring things you enjoy and have a passion for. Forcing someone to learn something that they don't want to learn will never get them anywhere. Past middle school, I think that all academic subjects are completely obsolete. Once you learn the basics that everyone should know, during elementary and middle school, you should be free to explore your passions as much as you wish, without school restraining you from your true passions. I feel that after middle school, my creativity really plummeted. Now, it's a huge struggle to come up with my own ideas, now that school has conditioned my brain to be a sponge instead of a machine. Intake what you hear, spit it back out on paper, forget it in a week, then do it again. At the very least, schools should try harder to preserve students creativity. Creativity is what makes you successful, not retaining useless information and spitting it back out.

I feel like school is just a test for how good we’ll work when they put us in jobs but they try and dress it up as learning and building the next generation

Elementary school: think outside the box with creativity.
Middle school: think on the edge of the box with a bit of creativity.
High school: think inside the box with no creativity.
Out of school: think outside the box with creativity.
Hmm... that doesn't seem right. Where did the government go wrong with its education system
