The alien franchise, is one of the most popular sci fi franchises of all time, being up there with Predator, Star Wars, and Star Trek - but the franchise has been a bit average post the 1986 film. Seeing as I've already covered Aliens Fire team Elite, and Aliens Dark Descent has just released - I did try to cover review Aliens Dark Descent, but it wasn't really my jam - So I thought i'd go back and take a look at Colonial Marines 10 years later and see if its as bad as people say

I say they make an Aliens game made by the same people that brought us Alien: Isolation. Only way to be sure.
Funnily enough, that game's development was also a mess, except they actually managed to pull it off. Then went back to only making Total War games lol.
And then nuke it from space!

I still laugh to this day that the reason the xenomorph ai was so terrible was because of a spelling mistake lol. The mod ACM Overhaul pretty much fixes this game the best it can be. Here's hoping for more updates for it one day.
Please, please, please, PLEASE stop regurgitating this. This is a classic example of games journalism being shitty. This "fix" did NOT fix the AI. It is *still* every bit as dumb as it is before the fix.

@@revolrz22 You're kidding right? The xenos use ceilings and walls 100% more than before, they actively try to sneak up on you. In the Vanilla version they just run straight at you upright. The revised AI might not meet your standard, but to say it's exactly the same is just false. Plus the mod lets you customize.
Pay no heed to people who installed this mod wrong then cry about it.
@killroy23 it's hardly a mod. We've known about this "fix" since before it was incorporated in the mod and people have been manually rewriting the code for a while hence.
Didn’t care about the bad animation, I enjoyed it from beginning to end!

I had a little enjoyment of the game the only thing that really pissed me off was 79.99 for a broken and graphics that looked worse than ps2 but the thing that made me mad the most was being lied to

I'd like a remaster of this with the dlc and improved ai, but not a remake. I'm just glad we got Hicks back as canon for a little while.

I played Aliens: Colonial Marines when I was 11 and as a kid I didn't really see or care about anything this game got wrong, I was just excited to immerse my young Alien-loving mind into the game, so I had fun. I still like this game but I understand why people think it's shit. I really hope one day it gets a remaster with the removal of the buggy AI. I'd totally replay it if it got improved from the ground-up.

I have to suggest, Templar GFX Overhaul of this game. It fixes countless bugs, including Graphics, AI, and Sound. Lets you customize a bunch of parameters, its really great. 100% better than vanilla version.

The funny thing is that Alien Isolation is every bit as filled with fan service as this game - the protagonist is Ripley's daughter, the Nostromo is an important plot point (with voiced lines from the original cast), and the visual design is painstakingly crafted to be reminiscent of the movie.
Isolation, however, is set in an original location, features original concepts, characters and technology, and blends original aspects into its gameplay. Instead of feeling like it's just appealing to nostalgia like with Colonial Marines, Isolation feels like it's part of the same universe.
Colonial Marines feels like you're taking a theme park ride designed to look like Aliens. Isolation feels like you're *in* an Alien movie.

A: Fireteam Elite didn't forget about the U1 grenade launcher on the pulse rifle. The weapon in Aliens is an M41A, wich features the U1, and the ACM rifle is the M41A MK2, wich also has the U1 Grenade launcher. However, Fireteam Elite troops use the M41A2 Pulse Rifle wich had the U1 Grenade launcher REMOVED from the rifle because a third of the rifles started to misfire due to the U1. As a result, all the U1 launchers were stripped from the M41A2 Pulse Rifles.

I bought the collectors edition on release date with low expectations. I had so much fun and finished the campaign dozens of times (solo and coop). I can easily ignore the cheesy dialog and unlikable characters and story. It was just plain fun.
I never encountered any game breaking issues though.
Also the multiplayer modes were great fun and it is sad to see it die out. Next to coop i played a lot of TDM, Escape, Survive and the mode that had you protect specific area's for a while and later of course Bughunt.
I mostly play it at night.. mostly.
Great to have low standards. Others expect more for our hard earned money, especially after having been shown the lie of what it wasn't.

Frost did carry a Flamethrower. Apone directed Frost to hand over his Flamethrower in the hive to kill the chest burster.
Man I remember being so excited for this game when I first saw the trailers and demo! I was 13 and my parents took me to Redbox and I picked this game up and played it all night long with two of my cousins. We beat the campaign and had an awesome time on multiplayer! I guess I was young and dumb because I didn't see anything wrong with this game at all. Now looking at it I can see the imperfections. I'm just happy to say that at the time I had an absolute blast with it.

People who pick it up now probably just see it as some old game that looks and plays old,but knowing the full journey behind it then game still pisses me off.
I want to see someone make an fps horror strategy game, like a mix between all three Alien games, Isolation, Dark Descent, and Colonial Marines.

When this game was first announced it was said it would be a survival game akin to when the team were stuck in Hadley’s Hope in the film.
You were going to set up turrets, weld shut plate steel pressure doors and hide in medical or OPS, praying your reinforcements work until the wave is over.
You’ll have your weapons just in case they find a way in.
But nope - it’s a call of duty campaign where you fight humans.
There’s nothing they can do to this game to make it good.

Correct ! Not just that but elements of an actual squad/tactical shooter in other missions.
Played this with my dad back in 2013, as fans of the franchise we had an absolute blast! Was the equivalent of a Marvel credit teaser when we found out Hicks was still alive haha. The Stasis Interrupted DLC was awesome as well, shame we don’t get such story-focused shooters nowadays.

Nah, I agree. FE was grand in scope but was a massive let down, and way too difficult to play solo. Cm, though it had it's flaws, was way more enjoyable.

I liked your perceptive comparison of "Doom 3" with the early stages of "ACM".
I pre-ordered the expensive Collector's Edition that came with the very nice model of the Fork-loader & Alien. I found the game quite fun before I saw all the bad reviews on it, since it was patched it's really not a bad game. The DLC is even better, a solid package all in all, not perfect but entertaining.

I've been playing it lately its like they fix the bugs and the ai isn't as bad as it was when the game came out
@@mattdzapp89 TemplarGFX Overhaul fixes many more bugs, the main one is the Xeno AI. They actually try to sneak up on you using walls and ceilings.
It’s Lowkey fun, just hearing the alien sounds , motion tracker, and the sound your rifle makes is alotta fun

The bug hunt mode was near perfection.
Honestly it’s my favorite aliens game other than alien isolation and the avp game for the 360. I loved this game’s thrilling multiplayer. It was actually good

Probably you never played the first 2 original AvP games, which are the best by far in terms of matching the vibe of the movies, especially aliens
It seems Colonial Marines, had a good concept but poor execution. Alien Vs Predator 2010 seems like a better game overall

@@DudiReviews Oh yeah AvP definitely had a lot of reused assets but I give it a pass because of the different styles of the different characters going through them

AvP was *definitely* a far better game all round. The only problem it had was the matchmaking servers. I used to play it regularly and sitting in a lobby for 20 minutes was fairly common.
I booked the day off work for this, I have a massive Alien tattoo going from my shoulder to my elbow and I still all of the movies on VHS.. this was the ULTIMATE betrayal. I never played a Gearbox game again. Alien Isolation was like a factory reset for my fandom after this

It's ashame that they still haven't remade/ remastered ACM as we now live in an era where even ten year old games are getting that treatment.
From my perspective developers over complicate licensed games, as Alien Trilogy was quite basic but it is still held in high regard by those who played it. If that game were to be remade with updated graphics, more mission types and more bosses it could be successful.
Edit: Alien Trilogy is Abandonware, apparently, if anyone's curious and wants to play it! 🙂
They can't remaster it. Gearbox scammed SEGA for years stealing funds meant for Aliens to use it for Borderlands. They also lied to fans and SEGA about what the game was meant for. I was a kid reading the original Game Informer Alien Colonial Marines issue and was so excited. I would compare the scenes they remade from the movie with the actual film, and they were so close. Too bad it was all a lie.

The one thing from ACM I liked was the new Xenomorphs they added. The Crusher is fully canon now, since it was in the other games, but I’d love to see the Raven, Boiler, and Spitter return some day.
Also, re: that comment about re-doing the Aliens canon, they’ve sort-of done that. Once Disney bought out Fox (and therefore Aliens), they hired someone to specifically come up with a proper guide to what’s canon and what isn’t (plus what’s “soft canon” and “hard canon”), and it seems to have went a fair bit better than it did for Star Wars. To my knowledge the only things that have been released since in the franchise are Dark Descent, Fireteam Elite, and the pen-and-paper RPG, but they’ve all been pretty good imo.
Oh right on. I read some of the comics and the alien human queen looking thing was .... a bit weird. That and some comic art has gone down hill a bit too. But some decent stories here and there too

Aliens is my all time favorite movie. I enjoyed the game, they did a good job of recreating that feeling.

This is a game I feel deserves a remake. If not get it right, then fix a lot the issues it has.

Templar GFX 6.2 completely changes this game, AI, weapons, smartgun anywhere you like, etc. The script is brilliant! A perfect continuation of Aliens 1986 and the ACMTM
Second this emotion, the TemplarGFX mod improves this game dramatically. They should simply adopt these improvements into the vanilla game itself.
@@killroy23 Gearbox aren't gonna release any updates after all this time. FOr PC users we have TemplarGFX but not for anyone else which is a great shame as most people are console users.
@@gold333 I do feel for console users, but wouldn't it be easy to integrate it into a download for new gen consoles? I mean we owe TF2, Counterstrike, and DoD to mods. Steam still sells it as part of the Alien Colletion, there should be a mod option on there at least. Give the dude some credit

Great video! I personally enjoyed the game for a bit at the start. At the time I only played AVP 2010 and barely watched to movies so I guess that kind of ruined the fun for me.I feel like the game has potential and if it wouldve been treated rightly it would be a good game.

I played the PS3 version of this last year and enjoyed it. It wasn't great but it was fun. Plus it had a Full auto Pulse Rifle and a Pump-Action Shotgun as your starting loadout which means you had both of my favorite video game gun types from the start never a bad thing IMO

but it was also one of the few games that used the LCD display

I randomly thought of this game today and typed into RUclips “was aliens colonial marines that bad?” I see everyone all over RUclips saying it was terrible but honestly 14 yo me and my brother playing co op campaign had a blast, and I always have fond memories of that game. Thanks for this review mate!

Had so much fun with the multiplayer in this game. Played it all the time. It would be cool with a remaster of this game on modern consoles.
The multiplayer in this was the best thing, especially the escape mode till everyone unlocked the rupture upgrade on the spitters
Now now now hear me out i LOVED isolation it was definitely the best alien game with Ripley searching for Ellen and the clear story line of the game made it so good i liked colonial Marines too as the game was with good graphics compared to that time and the story of it was kinda lame but exciting i can say dark descent is a very good alien game and im trying to complete it 100% in my opinion i still sometimes turn my xbox 360 on and play it for fun

once in an online game, I died as the Marines and I unexpectedly came back to life without a head, and I was unkillable in an online vs match. It was pretty awesome

A spiritual remake I think could be okay. Marvel comics did a return to LV 426 and it wasn't too bad

The only reason people criticized this game because the game wasn't hard enough. Then you have some people compare this game to Call of Duty. But funny thing about it, when I play Aliens Colonial Marines when it first came out. I never had any of this issues that people were saying on RUclips.

I enjoyed the hell out of Colonial Marines. It was like an arcade experience based off of Aliens with the collecting of “classic” weapons.

Polishing a turd here. A:CM was unmitigated garbage to the extent that I quit playing halfway through the campaign. It was simply atrocious. Being a big fan didn’t help one bit in my case. It was the first and last game that I ever pre-ordered from any company. Randy Pitchford needs to understand that his deceit and betrayal not only cost his own company profits, but those of the entire industry, as many like me would never trust any pre-order ever again after that, no matter who the publisher/developer was.
He learned nothing, Homeworld 3 is similarly a disaster

That's not a defence. 'another game also had this flaw' doesn't magically make it not a flaw.
What I think it happend is during the CEO meeting talking about this project, the SEGA people said "we heard fans of Aliens like the bugs..we want LOTS of bugs in this game" and the developers being mostly indian slave workers who never saw a movie in their life said "ok Mister Sr."
40 megatons. Everything within 4 miles would be vaporized, there wouldnt be anything bigger than a brick left of anything of the power plant or the colony building

Played this recently on Steam while not the best Alien franchise game that I've played it definitely had improvements via the fan-made patches though that being said the fact this game sucked prior to fans fixing it is something that shouldn't be ignored.
I just played this 2 days ago because I got back into Aliens content from watching "Alien Theory"

ACM did just enough to satiate my desire to see another colonial marines Alien movie. To me it seems too often that fans poo poo the idea of another movie with colonial marines, and insist on Alien being a space horror franchise, only to cry in disappointment whenever a new movie gets released. I loved the sound design, and how some aspects of the lore were "corrected". The zombie Xeno level was straight terror. I don't feel I had to overlook many issues with game mechanics to enjoy a beloved childhood franchise. The weapons and their customizations were cool. I enjoyed it, and think about revisiting the game from time to time.
All I expected from this game was COD with aliens and I got COD with aliens. I like this game enough I still play it till this day.
I have noticed that after the big update they released for the game a ton of the 3 way fights were changed to remove the third side which ended with a ton of fights against just mercenaries.

This was the game for me that broke my trust in Gearbox Software, of which I was really disappointed, especially with hits such as Borderlands 2 at the time. I've only ever bought 2 more games since then developed by Gearbox, but whenever I see the Gearbox logo on any game, it pretty much makes me feel the same detest as I feel when I see the EA logo.

Fireteam elite was free on ps plus and now i want another alien game to play. Definitely gonna try this. As long as the bugs dont break the game i can put up with em. I like how this is an fps.

I think I was the only kid that actually liked Colonial Marines when it came out. I always saw the game as representing the spirit of the second film which was more like an action/thriller than horror.
1,123.2 hours, A lot of Team Deathmatches were involved. The broken MatchMaker caused me to add friends...And I have many that are still on my friends list. Great gamers/people. The game did suck, but we stayed together for many of years.

Would be great to get interviews on the dev team to know what happened to the game. I know they had some really talented artist work on it but I would love to hear their side and why it failed so badly.
I will say the atmosphere in colonial Marie's is great
Wasn't it because they put together an awesome looking show reel that built up everyone's expectations and then outsourced to a different company to finish off the game? I'm pretty sure I once saw a side by side video of scenes from the trailer next to scenes from the final release, and the drop in quality was fairly evident.
I was so pumped for this game, all the hype, a decade of waiting and it was dead on arrival.
I even bought the collectors edition, still have the power loader in its box, unopened.

The problem with Alien and Terminator is they repeat the same things we've already seen.
Personally, I would like to see a Dr Church movie.
I'd love to see a terminator movie, but rather than america/LA as we've always gotten - what was going on in London? or other places in the world - and the struggles there
@@DudiReviews Tbh we never got an insight into who or what directly contributed to Skynet's uprising, I would love to see a movie where the aim of humanity is to destroy the time machine before its construction.
Dr. Church's back story was harrowing. I read it as a teenager and it actually made me feel nauseous. Not sure I'd want to see a live action adaptation.
If there's a comic that deserves an adaptation, its Nightmare Asylum. Unfortunately it's part 2 of a trilogy where part 1 is mediocre at best and part 3 is downright awful, but with enough tweaks it could be made into a standalone story, or they could even condense the whole trilogy into one movie with emphasis on the part 2 elements.
the person who thought it was a good idea to fight mercenaries in this game, perhaps as much as xenos, was not very bright.
I got the collectors edition for my ps3. Came with the power loader fighting an alien statue. I think that was the best part of the game lol. Being a huge alien fan. I couldn't believe that anything from E3 wasn't in the game. Such a shame. I did play it with co-op. We beat the game the same day. Like the idea you have in having a complete reboot to the game. But this time only alien's not humans to fight etc.

It’s a damn shame how the gsm turned out. Like damn, I don’t mind the retcons and stuff that don’t make sense like how Harley’s hope wasn’t destroyed, but the AI, lack of xenomorphs, meh gameplay, crappy graphics and character animation, really sank the game.
If this game was handled competently and delivered on its E3 preview, it would’ve been a fantastic game. They did some stuff right, like good atmosphere and sound design and nostalgia and new guns and alien designs and the multiplayer was decent enoguh, and I liked hicks surviving. But it just wasn’t enough.

Your final words there "play with each other and play with yourself" you've earned a subscribe and like for that. This is one game I would love to see remade. I actually still play Colonial Marines to this day on my PS3 and whilst it could be better I don't hate it. Brilliant video.

I remember enjoying it when I played it. But I’m a big fan and would just take what ever the IP three at me.
I did the same, I just role played the whole thing. It wasn’t perfect. But until Isolation, there just wasn’t much out there.

I loved so many aspects of the game, but I hate the non-threatning aspect of the Xenomorphs because the 2010 AvP Xenomorphs were actually dangerous in large numbers, actually when you hear them hiss in the distance you feel shivers. But I do admit I love many stuff from this game like the way you can use the motion tracker the way is used on the film, weapons customization, the legendary weapons from the characters from Aliens, the epic sound effects with the soundtrack, the split screen co-op which is one thing I wanted to have on AvP 2010, use the freaking wielder torch. And let's not forget the levels where you don't have your weapons where you deal with boiler Xenomorphs and The Raven.
My only wish is that other company makes a different version of this game but that was actually like the 2001 PS2 unreleased, where you can control and customize your marine squad.

I downloaded it from Steam Monday and the “teather” typo is still there. I’ve done a play through and it was okay but the main issue I had was that the guns don’t seem to aim where the red dot sight appears to be aiming. I’m on Steam deck and am looking to install the overhaul then play through again.

14:10 Ahh whilst its not explained ingame, it has been explained in cannon. The reactor design, it blows up not out. The company wanted something that in the unlikely event of a criticality the resulting explosion would be forced up not out, blanketing the area in radiation but minimizing damage to company property. People are easy come easy go but installations have a significant dollars attached to them.
It's not even relevant anyway.
This colony is a hardened shelter meant to withstand the primal atmosphere of the planet and its brutal storms before it got terraformed proper. It's not cheap mdf/masonry suburb building you see blown away by overpressure in the nuclear test footage. It's a few miles away from the processor too. So it was essentially a hardened target taking a glancing blow - devastated but somewhat standing.

Honestly its actually a fun game. The xeno ai was...dumb, but it was still a fun game, especially in the multiplayer. Compared to many newer games coming out, its kaing this game great again

I pre-ordered the collector's edition of this, and it still hurts. It's a prime example of being able to quote the source material, without actually understanding it. In an Aliens game you should be constantly on the backfoot, hurting for ammo, losing people, getting overwhelmed. Dark Descent really got it right, despite the flaws of that game. In A:CM, a single Alien is just fodder, mostly annoying, easy to kill. In A:DD, a single alien can and will mess your team up. I made a Gorman level call and as a result, xeno slipped past our killzone, marine lost a leg as a result. Had to bail on the mission and carry them out. Became a chaotic, fighting retreat. _That's_ Aliens man. Not this shit.

You mention that you thought of Aliens: Colonial Marines after playing Aliens: Dark Descent. I've been playing Aliens: Dark Descent and it made me think of Colonial Marines for the first time in years. They're both different types of games, but Dark Descent felt a lot more like a proper Aliens game than Colonial Marines did.
Outside of a couple of sequences, I don't remember anything about Colonial Marines. Funny to hear Pitchford say what big fans of Aliens Gearbox are, only to discover they contracted out most of the development to other companies.

A PvE extraction shooter would be really cool.
Something where myself and a bunch of friends can jump in, shoot aliens, find loot and get the hell out without dying.. I'd be down for that.
Doesn't need to be some cannon accurate story, just something set in that universe. Abandoned marines left to fight for ourselves and having to make the best of what we can find, or something. No need to bother too much with awkward cutscenes, just give us what we want, Players Vs Aliens. Simple.
A bit like say an Alien Helldiver's? Yeah I'd be down for that
@@DudiReviewsI'd say more like an alien tarkov. initially you have almost nothing and a world filled with loot and enemies. in Helldivers it doesn't matter if you die, cause you keep that fancy gun. in a game like this you should fear every alien cause even full gear one mistake is your doom and you need to find a new loadout out there again.

It's the kind of bad that you have to play to understand. It just feels weird. I once said that playing this game feels like playing online when the connection is bad. Edit: I just remembered that one time the alien queen didn't show up on the surface of the planet like she was supposed to and I looked up and sure enough there she was stuck in the air just sort of slowly walking in the sky. It looked almost like a dance. My friend told me I should have recorded it and I forgot that I could have. Too bad, because it was quite a sight.

Originally hudson was revived for the game, but after seeing the sorry state of the game, he said his iconic line and died again
Barring some of the plot holes, bugs with the visuals, which were patched, the support A.I. and the enemies, it was an okay title and provided an interesting spin on the plot that could have fit into the canon between the first four films. As a total package with DLCs and the patches, It's not a bad FPS that has the benefit of co-op, but is a real let down in terms of what it was looking to promise and deliver as a tribute to the Alien's franchise.
Despite its flaws, I just enjoyed being able to play a game that has cool easter eggs, the proper usage of the motion detector, and proper pulse rifle sounds. Is a fun simple game

An Alien game should be a no brainer to make. Alien Isolation aside, it’s baffling how few great games have been made. I’m not talking the combo of Alien/Predator, I’m talking the pure Alien IP.

This game definitely needs a remake. I liked the presentation they had in 2011 being more horror focused and more of a battlefield 3 style game where you’re just random marines just trying to make it through the game, cracking jokes and just general marine humor to cope with what’s going on around you. A dead space style overhaul would be ideal but if they can just give us something even remotely close to that e3 presentation I can die happy.
I seem to recall everyone was moaning how easy the game was......the game then got a brutal borderline unplayable difficulty spike update.
I don’t understand how people not involved in the original movies, writing or production get anything to say on canon or not.

I got this game during Covid as I wanted a new Aliens experience and went in knowing it was bugged and on every disappointment list and based on that I actually had fun.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this review in that it can be fun if you can get into it. That doesn't forgive those involved for the mess that the whole thing came out and rework should be done to do this game justice. Until then at least it works on steam deck... that's something right?
They should make something like alien isolation style game which will take place during newts parents return to hadleys hope and ending before sulaco arriving in orbit.
Like you are one of the colonists and try to survive as the colony is overun overtime. I think that could be fun as hell
Imagine exploring hadleys when it still functions and after some hours of gameplay sneak around recently set up and broken barriers etc.

I loved the extended version of aliens movie, when we have brief moment of working colony.
Going from oh colonist died under weird circumstances, finding out there is hostile creature.
Looking for relative in the atmosphere processor to find out whats happening to missing colonists, then to escape from there and going to full on survival mode as hadleys is besieged.
Too bad there arent many good game writers anymore :/ ...

I bought deluxe edition when ACM came out on xbox 360.
Was very disappointed, but MP kind of saved it for me as i played it for weeks.
I own this game on steam as well, did replay it recently with the templar mod and enjoyed it.
My daughter is now also an alien fan so cant wait to play the campaign with her 1 day :D

You can enjoy this game all you want, I don’t, huge alien fan but I never put a game down faster. Also, because it seems most are mistaken on this, this game is NOT canon.
