      @JJcDAmAn1 8 лет назад +54

      charla The facts aren't though. They are from the last couple years. Just because the clips are from "2014 and earlier" doesn't dismiss the facts that are presented in front of you through the numbers; he's just an average finisher around the rim.

    • @michaels6951

      He said in the video that he is going into his 9th year in the nba. Russ aint stopping now when it comes to his insanity at the rim with difficult shots. As long as that continues Russ won't be an elite finisher like kyrie or lebron. The dude played with the best scorer in the nba and he felt like he had to take ridiculous shots at the rim as shown in the video. Can't imagine what will happen when he is the only option on the team. Total scoring volume will increase and his %'s will drop even further

    People who call Westbrook the best finisher in the league is the same people who only watches highlights of him dunking. Just because you see someone destroy 7 footers in the rim doesn't mean that guy is a consistent great finisher.

    • @astheskylarksings
      @astheskylarksings 8 лет назад +11

      i was thinking about Rose too... yet Rose was a turnover king back then too... but he definitely finished pretty nicely back then.But no one beats Parker... as much as I don't like his game.

    • @vsc1988
      @vsc1988 8 лет назад +21

      +slyrundog True, Rose did turn over the ball a bunch in his younger days but a lot of those were off wild passes and botched dribbles. His finishing was rarely off in his prime and when it was Noah was there to clean up. But I feel like Rose's layups were more in control than Westbrook's. But Westbrook is a way better dunker. So that's why Rose was a better finisher. Now though those days for Rose are pretty much gone. He does have too much confidence going to rim as when he was young mostly because of injuries.

  • @petefaders
    @petefaders 8 лет назад +286

    Bout time someone recognized that he's overrated. He makes horrible decisions, particularly in the 4th Q. HIs athletic ability and mental drive makes up for it to some extent, but not enough to justify it. If I was Durant I would have left sooner. All he had was a bunch of role players and a "mad" point guard who can't be coached.

      Half the game is mental. KD's team was not doing what he needed to be the most comfortable and be the star player. He's not a team leader like Lebron but that's a personality thing. But typically a leader takes most of the blame, in any situation. Take away Russel's bad shot choices (the ones most would agree on as being bad..forced, hogging, out of control etc) and they would have made it to the finals. That's most likely a statistical fact. And Curry was a no show, I don't blame anyone else for that.

    The title says Russ is not as u think "at the rim". Coach further invokes advanced stats to support his viewpoint on how Russ is not so good at "finishing at the rim". Sadly some people have to bring up other aspects of his game like how he "sucks the defense in when driving", or even mention irrelevant players like Curry, both of which have nothing to do with his "ability to finish at the rim". Illiteracy truly is a big problem. BTW, Russ is one of my favorite players and I most certainly hope that he can improve his efficiency and carry his team back to the WCF.

  • @KTC2412
    @KTC2412 8 лет назад +63

    Nobody ever wondered why his fg % so low ?

    • @Qichar
      @Qichar 8 лет назад +1

      His FG% is low because he's not a good shooter. And he's way too fond of taking ill-advised jumpers, and he's only average among guards at finishing at the rim. Considering that Curry averaged better than 45% from outside the arc, Westbrook's 29.6% this season looks pretty poor. But this shouldn't be news to anyone that watches OKC games. I love Westbrook's competitive spirit but I've always thought he took too many shots per game. Given his (relatively) low offensive efficiency, it seems the team would have been better served if he distributed more. To say nothing of how getting everyone involved (which is the point guard's JOB) would have helped his teammates get into a rhythm. They've got to be feeling like Russ doesn't trust them when they are standing around wide open and Russ dives into the paint yet again.
      However, this year his assists per game jumped up to 10.4, so maybe Westbrook himself is starting to realize a better way to win. Too bad he realized it too late to keep KD in OKC.

      Anti-Anti Fun Percentage. In fact, in 2015-16 he was the best in the league... better than big men and LeBron. He took more than 3 layups per game so it's not an insignificant number. If you just watch him take layups in traffic you'll understand why that's the case. He isn't as explosive or flashy but he's crafty and uses both hands really well, plus he has the threat of the floater

      And dont forget when there were other "guaranteed championship" teams, they usually did not win the ring. For example Miami Heat with LeBron for the first time, or LaL with Howard, Nash, Kobe. But its true, this warriors team is clearly the strongest out of them. Finalist of the playoffs getting extra superstar on its roster, wow.

    I wonder how these numbers are affected by high pressure situations. Either in the 4th quarter or when the game is within a basket? I suspect that they take a dip because Russ does have a tendency to force plays during crunch time.

    Russell Westbrook
    2015-16 Season
    PPG APG RPG PER
    23.5 10.4 7.8 27.64.
    Playoffs:
    PPG APG RPG
    26.0 11.0 6.9
    He shot 45% from the field, which is actually pretty gooD. In the playoffs, he upped his averages to 26.0 11.0 and 6.9 with 2.6 steals and 0.1 blocks, as he led his team to within one game of the NBA Finals against the statistically greatest NBA team ever. He also led the playoffs in total assists, even though he played one less series than Curry and LeBron. He was also tops in offensive box plus/minus, and second in overall box plus/minus AND value over replacement player to LeBron James. Respect? Appreciation? No. We MUST find something negative, ANYTHING negative, to say about him. Smh.

    Coach Nick: I thoroughly enjoy your teaching and videos. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone actually critique, analytically, these players because if not for this hard evidence, everything becomes a generality.
    So many fans are "highlight" driven fans that actually know little about the game of basketball. Many have not even sat down to watch a full game, and I think that in the case of Russ, he intoxicates one's objectivity with his superior athleticism leading to so many fans out there that believe he is something he just is not, an elite-level point guard!
    I am from OKC, and have stood firm in the belief that Russ will never win a championship unless he changes his game. He needs to stop shooting so many threes (30% is not good enough), gain control over his body/athleticism (as you've shown here in this video), and become a student of the game so that his horrid shot selection can be rectified before it's too late and he wakes up to find himself retired with no rings.

    A lot of hate on this video and I don't know why, Russell Westbrook is crazy athletic and explosive, but he has no body control and as a result is super sloppy, if he could control himself and develop a Kyrie Irving type of lay up package utilizing his crazy athleticism, his field goal percentage would go way up.

  • @rayr1vera
    @rayr1vera 8 лет назад +6

    Westbrook exploits his athleticism, so when it comes to finishing.... he's overly off balanced because his timing+explosion doesn't give him the right footing. I don't think he really has a lot of that 'English' touch when it comes to laying it in too. But also when he's contested in the paint he literally wants to go right through the defender as well. But he still is a great finisher regardless

    Hey man, great video. longtime OKC fan here to weigh in on some stuff. I agree with everything in your video, it's statistics! My biggest complaint with Russ is his tendency to fall on the ground from driving to the basket too hard and not getting back on D. However, I'd be curious see how he has improved over the years on this factor. This was a HUGE problem with him early on, but it seems to me(just from watching) that he has improved on this issue recently. His assists per game have increased from dumping the ball to Serge, Enes and Steven bc I think he realized he won't get as many fouls. I think he is finishing better than he was 2-3 years ago, but there are definitely underlying issues that you brought up. I'm curious to see how he is going to adapt without KD. Hopefully he continues to pass the rock, but if he acts like he did two years ago we won't make the playoffs.
    PS I think Detroit benefited from Reggie Jackson's similar tendencies because of Drummond. Drummond is a beast! Maybe you'll see Steve help Russell at a better rate this year.

      +Jasper Jamm the lay ups that Russell attempts are alot harder than a regular attack that most guards do. It's that a fault of questionable shot selection? May be. Or is it coaching fault that he is not put into a position to succeed? For the shots that Westbrook is forced to take he is shooting a pretty great %. Can u imagine if a good philosophy was instilled in Okc? Where Westbrook could get easy cuts to the basket like steph get and everybody on GSW gets? Or if Westbrook had a better big man to whom RW could drop the ball to could finish around the rim incase the defense is pluggin up on him? This guy never gives Westbrook credit for anything. With all his flaws Westbrook is a top 5 player in the league and it's pure blind haterism to deny him that title

      Simon And 3rd all time in scoring, 1st among non-big men. And even then, the only guys above him are Malone (played his whole career with stockton) and KAJ (played part of his career with Oscar and another with Magic).
      Meanwhile Derek Fisher is the best PG Kobe ever played with, yet still topped Jordan in all time scoring.
      Also Kobe didn't play many minutes as a rookie and played injured in his last few seasons. Those seasons aside he averaged 27 ppg over a 15 season stretch (that's longer than MJ's entire career).
      And MJ's 37.1 ppg season was very similar.
      28 FGA and 12 FTA per game, 48% shooting, 18% 3 point shooting, and a lower eFG than 06 Kobe (48% to Kobe's 49%). I suppose MJ is also an overrated scorer by your metric ?
      And the ppg difference is even smaller if you consider pp100p, which strips MJ of the advantage of a higher pace than 06 Kobe.
      Their usage rates and true shooting percentages were even identical. There is literally no way to call Kobe's scoring overrated without directly implying that MJ's is also.

    To say Russel is not superstar is just plain stupid, u have a guy that is best triple double player ever and u say that..
    This stats are true but it doesn't mean that he is not a superstar, if he could just learn to control he's speed, power and to learn to trust he's teammates he would be unstoppable, maybe even the best player that world has ever seen, period.

    Even with all his faults especially that TERRIBLEEEE decision making, he's arguably the hardest pg to guard in the league. Also he has several avenues of attack unlike someone like kyrie. Much scarier player even without the handles.

    This is just literally a video of why Russell Westbrook is a top 5 finisher at the rim in the game. Defense are expecting him to drive to the rim, more than any other NBA player, ARGUABLY. Because he's the most explosive. Not only this but OKC is one of the worst shooting teams in the league. So players tend to pay attention to Russ. While all these remain facts, Russ shoots 50% at the basket. If Russ had better shooters on the court with him Its a whole different story. You don't take anything in consideration, just his bad smh.

    • @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota
      @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota 8 лет назад +2

      What also proves my point is how every time he drives, almost everyone on the wing or the corner are wide open. When he drives every defender on the floor comes to help. I've even seen Kevin Durant begging on the wing wide open a lot every game.

    • @Brqinstorm
      @Brqinstorm 8 лет назад +12

      Yeah, but that counters what you said that he needs better shooter on his team.
      He had Durant wide open time and time again but as you saw didnt pass the ball consistently even when the lane was crowed by 3 defenders.
      (Ibaka was open in the corner a lot too, and he can make those wide open with some consistency)
      If we talk about talent and potential yes he is probably the best.
      But his shot selection is horrendous at times. So he is not as efficient as he could be.
      Stephen Curry is far more efficient in the paint even tho he doesnt have half of the physical ability of Wetbrook. That should tell you something.

    • @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota
      @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota 8 лет назад

      Brqinstorm Kevin Durant likes to make his own shots. Btw it's hard to find Durant sometimes because he quietly calls for the ball standing on the wing. Serge Ibaka is inconsistent at times. One time he's bricking 3's. Other times he can't miss. You're right about Russ' shot selection. I'm one of the biggest Russ fans in the world but he pisses me off when deffers to 3's.

    • @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota
      @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota 8 лет назад

      Brqinstorm What Nick fails to mention while comparing his finishing to Kyrie, Curry, Paul etc. Is Russ being a top player in the league, he has one of the worst 3 point shots in the league. So of course him mainly being a in the paint, mid range scorer is gonna have an effect on his FG%. TBH this is either biased analysis or obvious facts he didn't take in consideration.

    • @ArmandTheBlackRevolutionary

    I'm a HUGE #GOATBROOK fan (LAKER FAN HERE). Since Kobe retired, he's been my favorite player along with Melo.
    You're video is spot on, but that's pretty much it. He's a great competitor. His impact is just as good as the top PG's in the league. Just because he isn't as a good finisher at the rim, doesn't make him trash. Kyrie is by far the best FINISHER at the rim. No argument. Curry is a great finisher as well because most of the time, his shots are not contested. Most of Curry's buckets around the rim are because of his system, which isn't a knock.
    WESTBROOK gets more contact as he is one of the best BLOW BY defenders in the league. Don't get it twisted, Goatbrook is great. TOP 5 players easily in the league.

    • @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota
      @ThereWasThisBchFromMinnesota 8 лет назад +5

      This is literally a video about why Russ is a top 5 finisher at the rim in the game. The difference between Kyrie, Westbrook, and Curry is Westbrook shoots 30% from the 3. Being the most athletic player on the court, teams are always looking for him to drive, and when he does, the whole team collapses to help. OKC is not a good shooting team. They thrive in the paint. Teams know this. I've even seen KD wide open on the wing many times because they are focused on helping, Nick doesn't point any of these facts out. While these remain facts, Russ shoots 50% from the paint, which is very consistent, considering ALOT of his layups are double contested, with help D. Russ is indeed a great finisher.

    • @Jefferrrson

      All Tree Of Ya'll i wouldn't say he's a GREAT finisher, but isn't as horrible as this video makes it out to be. He's a great athlete and sure, he may not be smart most times, but i'll take the risks.
      CP3 is a great finisher tho. But Kyrie wins it for me. Curry is over rated. Not hating. Swap Westbrook and Curry and let's see if it's still the same stats after it's all said and done.

    (1) Great analysis! (2) Critical, sound, unbiased, solidly supported analysis is the only sure path for improvement, and this becomes ever more relevant as one intends to reach higher in the performance scale. (3) I can't avoid admiring Russ for his tenacity, devotion, athleticism and plasticity, but this does not prevent me from noticing big flaws in his game, which, much to his chagrin and suffering of his teammates and Thunder's fans. (4) Is this a matter of many years of bad coaching, or rejection of good coaching, or is it just a matter of personal ceiling? (5) From the last few games I watched, it seems that Russ is actually improving his game, serving his teammates more frequently than before. Maybe the presence of Paul George and Carmelo Anthony helped him in this area. (6) Anyway, I wish RW fixes those aspects of his superb game that deserve improvement, so he can bring his team to championships, and get the rewards that he so hardly strives to achieve.
