    Coach,
    You mentioned at the end of the video that plus/minus reflects how Westbrook makes mistakes that often undo his good plays. You then cited that Durant was a +7 and Westbrook was a - 4 in the game. First, any statistician will tell you that single game plus minus is far too small of a sample size to say anything substantive. Second, it is worth noting that this postseason Westbrook has the third highest plus minus of any player at +91. Durant is 20th at +55. Again, ten games is too small of a sample size to say anything substantive, but it is far more useful than a 1 game sample size

    One can nitpick any player play for play like this. Russ' intensity and athleticism bring more to the team than any of his cons detract. It's his intangibles along with his obvious talent despite the occasional forced plays that make him an asset to OKC.

      +BBALLBREAKDOWN You gave Russ a "bad" for KD delaying the decision-making and then subsequently getting stripped because of bad footwork? The only thing Russ knew is that he was going to get KD the ball...whether he decided to use an Adams screen on the same side, or Kanter screen on the curl to the opposite side was entirely up to KD. Even if the pass wasn't perfect, how does RUSS get a "BAD" for KD getting stripped...not even a "MEH"?

    I think some of the Meh plays aren't bad. They're "not good" but I wouldn't use some of those plays as argument against good plays. I see big time improvement from Russ. Still a crazy guy but definitely has improved. He used to be out of control all the time but now plays with more thought to say the least. Good video!

    I agreed with a lot, but there were a few I didn't. He had a Dirk fade-away and missed and you gave him a bad, then he did another Dirk fade-away and made it and you gave him a good. Otherwise, it was pretty spot on.

    +BBALLBREAKDOWN LOVE these play-by-play analyses. It would be really great to see other point guards like Curry and CP3 in these types of videos. It would really show who the best point guard is. Not that basketball IQ is all that matters, but PG's are meant to be the on-court coach and this really highlights why they are. Great Work

    • @DefinitelyNotIU
      @DefinitelyNotIU 8 лет назад

      +That Dude CP3 is the very definition of point guard in today's NBA. Look up Coach's video on CP3.

    • @juice9846
      @juice9846 8 лет назад

      Hurr a Durr you're speaking to a CP3 fanatic haha! Favorite player of all time but still, Steph's shooting skill is something never seen before and Russ is easily the most athletic PG of all time.

    • @DavoBirmingham2
      @DavoBirmingham2 8 лет назад

      +That Dude Definitely a great breakdown but I'm not sure this kind of metric would necessarily answer all of those questions. Certain "good" plays (e.g. a Westbrook offensive rebound out of nowhere or a full-court attack for a layup) are worth more than other "good" plays (e.g. a CP3 correct read of a PnR or accurate lob pass). With Westbrook the "bad" plays are always going to be apparent, but perhaps the two biggest individual plays of the game (12:50 & 14:10) were plays that perhaps only he alone can make at the PG position. Love the breakdown but think its value comes as part of this wider context. Respect.

      DavoBirmingham2 Totally agree. Each PG nowadays has a different playstyle which they excel in. Some good plays can be bad plays for other PGs. But I never meant to compare PGs based off this video. I just wanted to see which PGs make the right plays, suited for their playstyle.

    These are super interesting. I would love it if we could have some of these with Lebron, Steph, Kawhi, etc. for comparison. Also, adding a Great and a Terrible along with Good, Bad, and Meh would be really helpful. The thing with Russ is, yes, he makes some awful plays, but some of the Goods he gets are pretty insanely amazing Goods. When he drives and dishes, he gets people wide open, and gets hustle plays nobody else can. Would LOVE to see more of these.

  • @DavoBirmingham2
    @DavoBirmingham2 8 лет назад

    Russ will never be a steady, mistake-free player - he is balls-to-the-wall, full speed and wreckless by nature - mostly to the Thunder's benefit. Some of the "good" plays here (11:35, 11:57, 12:50, and 14:10) were not only some of the BIGGEST plays of the series, but plays that very few players in the league can produce. Beautiful to watch.

      +Roronoa Zoro I agree. Also, sometimes he got one vote in plays where clearly had to get two, like those possessions that ended with a decision from him then led to a rebound for okc with another play rigth after. I think he deserved a little more credit in this game.

    I'm willing to bet if you make a "comprehensive breakdown" of every single play that any player was involved in for an entire game, especially including *DEFENSE*, they would more-often-than-not come back with a WORSE conclusion than this one. I can only think of two players with a similar amount of responsibility to Westbrook that MIGHT consistently be an exception: Chris Paul and Kawhi Leonard.
    Considering the circumstances, this concept is weak for several reasons: one reason is that its impossible to grade all of these plays objectively because of other players' effect on the defensive string. Another reason is that it fails to take into consideration Westbrook's impact on the defensive string to begin with, a la plays that "he wasn't directly involved in". Also, that biased, backhanded complimenting you decided to include in your overall conclusion just reinforces my point perfectly.
    Coach Nick's "Good/Bad/Meh" videos *specially* *reserved* for Russell
    Westbrook: *MEH*

    • @Muchimuchimeohmy
      @Muchimuchimeohmy 8 лет назад +1

    • @orvcharl1
      @orvcharl1 8 лет назад +1

      Max Goodwin
      Are you serious? Do you really not realize that its actually the EXACT opposite of what you just said? Go read the comments...there are people that consider Coach Nick as an authority on this topic and MANY others; his commentary is very convincing.
      If everyone were able to just appreciate the play by play breakdowns (which ARE entertaining and fun to watch for any true basketball fan), while realizing that they are still in essence SEVERELY subjective, often lacking proper *context*, thereby limiting their comprehensiveness in regards to the subject they claim to research/breakdown in the video title...then I wouldn't see a problem.
      Instead, there are people that come away from watching this video who *legitimately* feel like Coach Nick just explained "why his +/- was a -4 while Durant had a +7" (HAH!), and that Westbrook might not "*ever* get to the point where he can minimize those bad plays". Like....what?? Seriously?

    this is how someone should analyze a player and learn from their own plays
    This should be done more often for different players
    Do one with Curry or Lebron
    5:17 is not Meh it's BAD
    he's posting a player he doesn't have an advantage over, not facilitating an offense with 16 seconds on the clock no one else touches the ball
    its a chuck
    5:29 driving into a lane with 4 defenders with 19 on the clock is not MEH
    its BAD. refs bailed him out
    7:00 Just because a guy misses the shot doesn't make it bad
    a top tier finisher in the league is going to average high 70s% successrate
    He made the right play and move , its GOOD
    9:00 Good by Russ, who's the fool who has Kanter shooting 3s?
    11:56 no issue here, he gets tot he rim with 5 on the clock for a layup. I'll take a layup attempt all day especially from that possession. GOOD

    Hey Coach, out of curiosity, what would be your most ideal job relating to Basketball? Love the video as usual.

    Man I love you and your videos. I love this sport and am glad someone is willing to take the time to educate the public on the intricacies of basketball. On the topic of Russ, thank you for adding some evidence to my already-present belief that he is drastically overrated. The most ridiculous thing was the fact that he had that crazy stat line and his +/- was -4. That just says all kinds of things about how he is a stat padder.

    Hey Coach, I really think your Westbrook propaganda has reached new heights with this video. You never do this to any other player...completely neutralize their positive impact by ATTEMPTING to highlight all the negative things they did as well. I posted on this video like 30 minutes after it came out, I guess this is just a channel after all...clearly not a conversation. Are YOU IN....
    ...a state of depression after game 6?

      +orvcharl1 +BBALLBREAKDOWN The comment above is so concise and truthful...Coach Nick I think your analytical skills are off the charts when it comes to basketball but you seem to have a hard time accepting players and teams that do not fit within the mould of how you FEEL basketball should be played...
      Russell Westbrook just anchored the defeat of arguably the best Spurs team we have ever seen...the team he led (on the floor) beat a team twice at home that lost their just ONCE in 41 games prior and you're attempting to make his contribution appear to be slightly above negligible at best...
      You need to do a bit of soul searching because this individual you seem to have a disdain for is still quite possibly the second or third best point guard in the NBA...yet you are hellbent on making sure that the negative is highlighted as much as possible...while simultaneously giving only praise to his PG counterparts (see: Chris Paul & Steph Curry videos)...I bet his game one performance where they defeated the record setting best team in the nba at home last night was slightly above negligible as well...In summation...Coach Nick you really need to get over your disdain for Russell Westbrook...he impacts the game positively in ways that for the most part cannot be duplicated by any basketball player on earth with the same frequency
      Still a incredible channel BTW...Cheers Coach :)

    he's like iverson in that his play if calculated in this fashion, or any really- is going to look out of control and inefficient. but like iverson- he plays with Sooo much energy and pasison- what he brings to the team, despite the turnovers and bad decisions- is incalculable- in that he is able to inspire his team to victory- even with the bad plays. that kind of stuff you can't statistically add up or even calculate . look at what he did in game 6. he simply won the game single handedly with his passion and energy. his teammates were energised and inspired. everything. i dont care what people say about iverson- he willed his team's to be better and his teammates were never better than when they were with him- and its the same with westbrook.

      +Loop Set Agreed. Russ gives you "good" plays where no play exists, with his energy and his nose for the ball. Pulling a "good" play out of nowhere with an unlikely offensive rebound is worth more than a standard "good" play like, for example, a pull-up J that multiple plays can give you at any point in a game. Quite simply, Russ's fingerprints are all over every big Thunder win and no metric can quantify that.

    To be honest I don’t think the pull up midrange with 18 seconds on the clock when no other okc player even touched the ball on those possessions is a good idea

    I disagree with this analysis coach. You should do a similar video for players like Curry, Durant and Leonard. I doubt that Westbrook is as much of a detriment as you claim he is to the Thunder.

      You and me both I don't like the heat Russ receives when the last couple of seasons he's been more helpful than KD who has been a little inconsistent but is coming back in full form I just don't get why ppl dislike the guy and try and label him as the one who needs to go and KD sidekick like what Dallas owner said

    i just can't fathom how the spurs are losing these games. they always seem to be in control till a slew of fantom calls and free throws end the big leads and switches the momentum.

      That's game 3 bro, Spurs where getting phantom calls all game always stopping OKC's momentum. Plus Spurs at one point scored all there points from the free throw line. Plus they just missed shots.

  • @JesusNoland

    It seems like Russell is improving but there's so many tiny mistakes that Russell still hasn't learned which make it sad to watch him play sometimes. The highlights are great but that's it. Will he ever learn?

    • @DavoBirmingham2
      @DavoBirmingham2 8 лет назад

      +Jesus Noland The "highlights" have fueled his team to the Conference Finals for the 4th time in his career. He will never be a steady, mistake-free player - he is balls-to-the-wall, full speed and wreckless by nature - mostly to the Thunder's benefit. Some of the absolute biggest plays in the series here (11:35, 11:57, 12:50, and 14:10) were plays that few other players at his position make. Beautiful to watch.
