    I’m loving this project! Several months ago I bought a 38 gallon aquarium, not realizing the apartment complex limits aquariums to 10 gallons. Hoping to save the tank and all the plants, I want to turn it into a paludarium, using stone and land supports to reduce the water area to 10 gallons. I’m planning a waterfall as well as a hydroponic system for the terrestrial areas. I’m just waiting to get back out and about to get the materials I need. This video has given me the idea to pull the HOB filter and put in sponge filters and start reducing water levels to begin transitioning the plants.
    Thank you! Keep the videos coming!

Just about what I have been thinking about starting up, is a tank/bowl or whatever set up. Great timing to find your videos! I think what I’ve set up recently is a riaparium. I grabbed some plants from a local river and found a 2.5 gal rimless tank to add them to. No tech. Just sitting on the windowsill. I may add fish. But for now, I’m just seeing if the plants will make it. I’d love to send you a pic and get your thoughts. ☺️

    You should try hard fine akadama. Doesn't have any ammonia, is very similar to aquasoils, but without the nutrients, so you can add your own. That way you know what's in there. Although, once established with shrimp or fish or snails, I have found you now longer need to use ferts anymore. I think it's pretty cool how it pulls the ph down to a very stable 6.4 from my tap water which is 7.6. It also drops the tds while it's absorbing nutrients. You know when it's established when it stops absorbing anything anymore. I use it in all my aquariums/paludariums and in wabi kusa setups, plus I have made wabi kusa balls out of it. I had to mush it up and add coca fibre and a rock in the middle. I even sold them for a while. I have one in my paludarium setup that is now over 5 years old and still going. Give it a try!

    • @Fishtory

      Yes, I do like Akadama...fluval stratum is fairly similar also

    • @marthanewsome6375
      @marthanewsome6375 3 года назад

      @@Fishtory Hi, I have tried both and I have to say fluval doesn't do the sucking thing as akadama does. Fluval doesn't admit ammonia, but it is nice to seed the substrate to where you want it and that can only be achieved with akadama. Hope you are feeling better. I have had sepsis a couple times and it sucks. Have they still got you on intravenous antibiotics? I had to have a nurse come into the home one time because I refused to stay in hospital. They wont let you do it yourself. After a week of that, I was on amoxicillin for another month. Please take care of yourself. Even though I sometimes disagree with you and comment, we are more similar than you think. Eg: I have no issue with black beard algae, unless it grows on my slow growing plants. Algae is part of the ecosystem. If anything your tanks look very similar to mine. Peace, love and speedy recovery! BTW akadama tends to be cheaper too. Hehehe

    Hello Alexander, do you think there is any point in cleaning a filter in a tech-free aquarium like the one in your kitchen ? My idea is that it could bring in good bacteria that shrimp, snails and even plants could use ?
    Brilliant blue for the nails and even more brilliant that you are there alongside your wife, especially during the most stressful times of the pandemic ! 🤗

      I think just adding plants and wandering around the house with clothes you wear out in the world, actually introduces plenty of bacteria... It's nearly impossible to avoid bacterial and fungal spores and cells. They're everywhere. But you dont need a filter for shrimp or snails... necessarily. But for fish ive decided other than air breathing species like gouramis and bettas... they like oxygen in the water via a pump, airstone, or a filter...just to move the water a little.

    Closest thing I have is my fiddler crab tank with Java fern, anubias, and cryptocoryne... but the emersed growth is still all in the tank... (that's a lie... I added a pothos... it hasn't died but it isn't growing super quick either)
    And I have a philodendron in the top of my quarantine tank... and I just set up my medaka over winter tank with king tut grass and cattails in terracotta pots I sealed to keep them rootbound and smaller to grow out the back of the lid where I used to have a hang on back filter

    Interesting. :) Since you mentioned European plant sellers, I thought I'd add Tropica.com. I think they are Danish. Their website is in several languages including English. They have a very good search system for plants. You can not only sort them according to height and use, but also according to how easy or difficult they are to look after.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 года назад +1

      Either way...but i just don't use gravel vacuumed water thats had the silt and mulm all churned up, unless i want to inoculats a tub outside or something that won't contain animals....so its great to gravel vac and get the sludge plus water for planted set ups...but basically just full of nitrates and even ammonia if you use it to get a tank going.... a piece of filter floss, sponge or even wood from the tank works far better for that... all the good bacteria without the detritus that needs to be broken down to be healthy for fish to interact with.

    Hey really amazing video,was curious how do you trim and replant the emersed plants. Will they regrow when you put them back in water (even after they flower)

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 года назад

      So it depends if they are perineal or annuals, but most tropical plants can be planted via stem even after flowering, and then resume vegetative growth. However some cabombas and bacopa plants, which I've seen flower emersed (and beautifully so)...totally melted under water immediately after flowering, and the roots stayed and re-sprouted but the actual stem and leaves/needles all fell away into mush.
      So it's case by case, but as a general rule tropical plants can survive flowering and return to vegetation growth, where as some emergent growth from suntropics or temperate regions, tend to melt and regrow after flowering completes.

      The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium thank you so much, very detailed and helpful response. Just to get more specific, if I had some stem plants like indica bonsai and limnophila sessiliflora. and they grew out of my aquarium and flowered. I would just snip them off from the stem under water and replant it submerged with the flower still attached ? Or would it be smarter to keep some plants always submerged, so When I propagate, the transition will be easier. I believe most aquatic plants are perennials.
      Also any tips for how to promote emersed growth ? Saw people say cover the aquarium top with Saran Wrap, and mist plants daily as they emerse and after...Working on a shallow pond style tank, trying to get as much information as possible to aid in maintenance.

    What are the pros and cons to making a riparium, either open og enclosed?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 года назад +1

      Some animals like turtles, archer fish, gouramis and bettas need humid air, or their eggs are hatched floating on bubble nests... also animals like mudskjppers need that 80%+ humidity and warm air, so that's the main reason to enclose one.
      Also some people want to grow plants, mosses or even lichen that need that humid air as well...many tropic plants fail to flower or flourish without it.
