This song along with "Hound Dog" are the clearest memories I have of Elvis as a child. And at the time I too didn't understand the concept of "Return to Sender."
"He's just adorable! He's making all the smiles! He's smiling. It's making me smile!" (4:52) Which then makes me smile!
"That is a picture right there! I'd have that on my wall, man!" (5:02) I love this! It's so darn sweet. Elvis turns you into such an adoring fanboy! It's like when I was in high school and I had all these Depeche Mode posters on my wall! When my parents were getting ready to move out of my childhood home, my father found all of my band posters tucked away in the basement. He called me to ask if I wanted to keep them. I laughed and said, "No, but thank you for asking! It's not like I'm going to hang them up on my wall now!" But it sounds like you may have missed out on this childhood ritual and like Michael Jackson, try to recapture some missing childhood experiences!
When Elvis sings, "So then I dropped it in the mailbox and sent it special D," and then makes that motion with has hands towards his crotch, I think it's supposed to be the motion of closing the mailbox in which he last just dropped the letter. (7:01) But I agree with you, it looks very sexual, like he's suggesting his love interest should perform a sexual act. And it doesn't help that "Special D" sounds like it could be mistaken for a word other than "delivery." So, I must have a dirty mind as well! 😉

I don't know how true this is, Seph, but I read somewhere that the singer Jackie Wilson, who Elvis greatly admired and was friends with, came to visit him on the set of 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' and he was actually sitting in the audience in this scene. So, as a tribute to him, Elvis decided to do some of Jackie's famous moves while he was singing this song. From what I read, Jackie Wilson really appreciated this tribute by Elvis. As I said, I don't know how true it is, but it certainly sounds feasible to me and explains why his moves are a little different to what he would usually do 😊

    Marvelous reaction!
He’s saying ‘zone’, which was the predecessor to the zip code. When she writes on the envelope “return to sender”, and puts it back in the mailbox, the postman will return it to the sender (alas, poor Elvis!). It’s like when you receive mail, with the correct address, but nobody lives there by the name on it, you can write on the envelope, “not at this address”, return it to the mailbox, and the mail will be redirected back to the sender. ❤

    He’s singing- Zone.
It’s Ad-dress unknown, not a dress unknown. He eventually did get a job singing here in the movie. Nice back story to this. They surprised him by letting a friend of his sit to his left in the audience. He was a black singer named Jackie Wilson. Elvis spots him and if you watch it, there a clip out on U tube that’s wider. But even here you’ll see him glance towards his left & spots him. He gets a big smile after that and starts doing some of Jackie Wilson’s moves. Jackie at a young age had a massive heart attack on stage in Cherry Hill NJ ( I remember because I was from New Jersey). He was quite sick for awhile and Elvis paid for all his medical bills. No one knew this till yrs later after Jackie passed away. His generosity knew no bounds and he did so much of it anonymously that only after his death did stories come out. He’s so cute in this because he keeps glancing to his left and smiling. I remember buying this record as a single when I was young and I played it over and over again. It was a big hit. By the way a person would write Return to Sender on envelope & the post man would deliver it back to the name on the return address in the corner. He knew she was telling him goodbye but didn’t want to accept it till he put it right in her hand because then he couldn’t make anymore excuses. I’m so glad you did this song , I mentioned it once in the comments because I knew it was in that movie & I knew you’d like it. Loved your reaction. One thing about you Seph, I never leave your reactions without a smile on my face. Thank you for that. ❤❤😊🎸🕺🏻🎤🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

Not all lyrics in Elvis's songs are actually biographical to the singer or character. One of this song's writers was Otis Blackwell who wrote a handful of other Elvis classics such as Don't Be Cruel. Definitely the best song of this movie; it went to #2 on the Billboard charts and # 1 on others like in the U.K. This song used to be an occasional guest at discos in the 70s.

I did know that they (like Fats Domino), had a mutual respect and admiration for each other.
Actually, Elvis’s and Fats’ bond went a bit deeper than that. It was a close bond, a love.

  • @ArcaneWeasel
    @ArcaneWeasel Год назад +11

She rejected his love letter by writing return to sender on the unopened letter. This does two things, it tells the post office the recipient doesn’t live there and there is no forwarding address and it tells the sender their letter was rejected at that address. Bottom line the address has a new occupant or the true resident didn’t want the letter. So the post office returns the letter at no further cost to either party and the person that wrote it finds it unopened and unanswered. Technically , return to sender is the answer, drop dead or get lost.

I have literally been listening to and in love with Elvis from the womb according to Mom. When I was 10 we were living in Kansas and Mom got tickets to his concert there in 1973. It was my first concert ever. I cried silently through the entire concert because I was so in awe of him. I had older ladies all around me handing me tissues to wipe my eyes and telling me not to be embarrassed because that was just one Elvis effect. That summer Mom and my bio father divirced and we moved to Tucson, Arizona. Right around my birthday we found out Elvis was having a concert there. The only thing I asked for as my 11th birthday present was to see Elvis again. Mom got us 3rd row seats. Still cried but also laughed and danced in my seat. He was amazing.

(I actually feel sorry for you guys). I have a bucket full of love letters and cards from high school boyfriend from 1986-1990 when he went off to college. Your generation will never get that feeling of waiting for a letter to come in the mail and running to the mailbox every day to see if anything is there. true.
Seph, fyi, In the grand scheme of things they had writing teams hired to embellish his 31 movies with musical numbers loosely related to the script.
Sometimes, a memorable song would come out of a movie - which were never touted to be weighty.
The writers' job was to get 8 to 15 songs into each Elvis movie to satisfy the wants of his fans.
But most people didn't put much effort in thinking about them in any meaningful way and Elvis dismissed most of them as fluff & nonsense.
      Edited to add -
Return to Sender WAS a banger of a song
as were a healthy handful of other hits that came out of his movies. And a bunch of his movies were very, very successful. But not much effort was invested in developing Elvis & he figured that out.
E had high hopes for an acting future that matured & evolved.
Instead he felt the movies were devolving & becoming more trite.
And so he transitioned out via the 1968 TV Special, later coined the Comeback Special.
Unrealized Soul development is what I believe led to Elvis's disillusionment, loss of hope, & premature death.
The repeat betrayal of his manager & betrayal of his inner circle also sent him in a downward spiral.

In My Opinion All Of Elvis's Movie's are a MUST WATCH -- hehe - I own all of them but ---- As a Little Girl in the 70's - "It Happened at the worlds fair" - "Girls Girls Girls" & "Blue Hawaii" Will Always be My Favorites!!!!!! #Nostalgia I would recommend watching all of his Movies -- Charro is in My TOP List With King Creole - Jailhouse Rock - Change Of Habit - Tickle Me - Stay Away, Joe ( Hilarious ) - Gosh I just love them all --- Elvis had Perfect Comedic Timing -- OH and GI BLUES -- Elvis only watched a Couple of His Movies -- King Creole Jailhouse Rock I have found facts He did watch them - & King Creole was his Favorite Movie He EVER MADE -- ( The Storyline is so GOOD ) He Plays Danny Fisher - SO WELL -- BUT Elvis hated doing these movies after a period of time According to his 1972 / 45 MIN / Interview -- He talks about it in much detail - He points out ( HOW HE HAD NO SAY WITH ANYTHING / SCRIPTS / PRODUCTION / NOTHING - HOW IT MADE HIM PHYSICALLY ILL / FEVER / WORRY / STRESS / HOW HOLLYWOOD WANTED TO MAKE HIM LOOK - AND SAID IT WAS NOT ME!!!!! AND HE SAID YOU COULD NOT PAY ME ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY TO DO THAT AGAIN --- OF COURSE THIS IS "VERY CONDENSED" AS TO WHAT HE SAID ABOUT MAKING MOVIES - HE ALSO SAID HE WOULD GET THE SCRIPTS AND KNOW BY READING THEM 4 TO 5 PAGES IN - THEY WERE A DIFFERENT NAME BUT THE SAME THING - HE WAS UNDER TWO 4 YEAR CONTRACTS - HE COULD NOT GET OUT OF - HE HAD DISPUTES WITH THE SCRIPTS AND HE'D GET ONE THEN IT WOULD CHANGE --- MOST NOTABLY CHARRO -- HE DID SAY "THEY WERE NOT ALL BAD" HE MENTIONS "TICKLE ME" AS BEING ENTERTAINING FOR FAMILIES - AND AGREED WITH THE INTERVIEWERS ( AUDIO ) THAT YES FAMILIES ENJOYED THEM - AND WERE ENTERTAINING --

Hi Seph, look at the lyrics 😂
    Return to Sender
    Return to sender
    Return to sender
I gave a letter to the postman
He put it in his sack
    Bright early next morning
    He brought my letter back
    Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
    We had a quarrel, a lover's spat
I write I'm sorry, but my letter keeps coming back
So then I dropped it in the mailbox
    And sent it special D
    Bright and early next morning
It came right back to me
    Return to sender, address unknown
No such person, no such zone
This time I'm gonna take it myself and put it right in her hand
And if it comes back the very next day then I'll understand
    Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
    Return to sender
    Return to sender
    Return to sender
    Return to sender...

Have you sent a birthday or a Christmas card?!? If you haven’t, you should! Anyway, when you mail a card or letter, you put a return address in the top left hand corner just in case it can’t be delivered for some reason. No such zone is referring to the zip code.

  • @lechat8533
    @lechat8533 Год назад +4

... no such person, no such zone :) In other words: I don`t exist for you.
She just doesn`t want anything to do with him anymore.
    "Then I`ll understand" means:
    - that the address and the person still exist but not for him.
    - that she broke up with him.
Letters can get lost, and people can move away. So, that`s why he sent the letter Special D because the recipient has to sign that she received it.
If you receive a letter that you don`t want, you cross out your own name and address, write "return to sender" on the envelope, and throw it into the next letterbox, and the letter will be sent back to the sender.
    Darling Seph,
I want you to immediately write a postcard or a letter to one of your friends or family members. Write just "HELLO", but do it.
Everyone should at least once in their lifetime:
tell their friends and family members that they love them, board a train, a bus, a ship, (balloon, helicopter), and an airplane, see a full Sun Eclipse, observe a Meteor Shower, see a falling star and the seaside and dip at least a pinky into it, walk to a mountain top, ride a bike, ride roller skates, buy flowers for their mom, sister, mother-in-law, friend, and of course their lover, and should write at least one greeting card to someone they love...
There are no ifs or buts here. That`s a MUST!
With a lot of love, Josie💛🧡❤

As of trying to be a cool teen amongst others my age, who mostly liked Kiss, this was not a cool song. And don't get me started on those doormat lyrics, you know what I think about songs with doormat lyrics.
