If you haven’t noticed, Elvis never toured the world. Instead he toured the U.S. only and made movies in between. He then just stayed in Las Vegas so people came to him. You see the Colonel was an “illegal alien”. He never told Elvis he was from Holland.

"Return To Sender" is a term that people (at least in the USA) use when receiving postal mail from someone they don't want to get mail from. The mail is then returned to the sender as undeliverable. Elvis was loyal to a fault, and that's why he kept Parker as his manager long after he should have fired him. At least there were a few occasions when Elvis went against Parker, most notably the 1968 TV special, which Parker wanted him to do nothing but Christmas songs. Elvis had no say at all in his movie scripts, which is why he finally just said he wouldn't do movies anymore. His 50s movies were excellent, as were a handful of the 60s movies, but then they just all became formula films, with the same storyline but different songs and co-stars. The producers would never let him branch out and show how good of an actor he was (and he actually really was a good actor as seen in films like King Creole). BTW, the name of the movie was NOT Return To Sender, it was Girls! Girls! Girls! And most songs from that era were very short because radio stations would not play any song that was over three minutes long.

Elvis did do serious drama. The main example was Flaming Star. That was a movie about racial conflict on the frontier of the 1800s. The movie was well directed and Elvis was lauded for a well done acting job. But it was a film with a lot of death and brutality. It told a truth in a nakedly painful way that compared to the joyous musical romp that was Blue Hawaii, it wasn't nearly as popular to the Presley fans. There's many of them who fawn over Clambake( his worst movie) but recoiled from the painful realities Flaming Star artfully displayed. Still, most of Elvis's films, especially those in the 50s, and mid and late 60s were still good to good enough for all but the determined cynic to enjoy time with them.

Anytime you have a good live performance of a number by Elvis or a music video as seductively charismatic as this one you should show it. But Elvis had many more great recordings that didn't have an accompanying stage performance. To do justice to his talent and educate people on just his musical artistry, those should be displayed as well. For example, From Elvis in Memphis, may be Presley's best album. But almost none of the tracks were performed onstage. Songs from that disc should be played for all to hear. Good cuts would include Only the Strong Surive, Long Black Limousine, True Love Travels On a Gravel Road, and Any Day Now. Other deserving music from earlier and later albums include Soldier Boy, How the Web Was Woven, and In the Heart of Rome.

I guess he trusted Col. Parker because he made him a superstar. For someone that didn't write a lot of his hits - he was beloved by a largely white audience. He did have a great voice, but he went from unknown to megastar. He eventually was offered some interesting film roles, but Col Parker thought they'd be too controversial for him. He supposedly turned down roles in Being There, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the Godfather, Midnight Cowboy, A Star is Born, etc.

Elvis was an undereducated guy from Memphis by way of Tupelo, Mississippi. Yeah, THAT Mississippi. To him, his word was everything and he was so grateful to the Colonel for “making him a star” that he basically let the con artist run his affairs and take 1/2 of what Elvis earned. He wanted to be in the original A Star Is Born with Barbara Streisand and Barbara lobbied heavily for Elvis, but the Colonel said no and threatened to sue Elvis if he tried anything legally. At least he got to sing If I Can Dream. Parker called it a “pinko-commie” song. Elvis insisted and won. It was his biggest moment, belting it out in eulogy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and RFK Sr, 2 of his biggest heroes.

"Why give a manager so much power?" Artists even now still don't know AS MUCH as an experience agent, and they all want an experienced agent! Colonel Tom grew up seeing what the Hollywood Studio System worked and could screw over world-famous actors. He figured he was taking a chance on this Nobody, so his "entitlement" ran very high, and as he was woo'ing Mom & Dad too with pink cadillacs, Elvis kept signing papers that eroding his abilities. Elvis lived in such a small world before Fame, and preferred keeping few contacts - lessening his experienced education, therefore. Colonel Tom remains somewhere between felonious parasite and outright criminal.

You obviously have very little knowledge about Elvis, just because he didn't play any screaming guitar solos he was indeed a musician and will always be one of the greatest artists of all time. Elvis had an amazing ear for music and could play any instrument he picked up, he totally "understood music" but he chose to concentrate on developing his finest instrument, his voice. Elvis was a great rhythm guitarist(noted by J.Cash who toured with him in the early days) and he played throughout the 50s on his music, he also played piano, on stage, and in the studio when he wanted to, along with laying down the bass on numerous of his songs. Elvis also produced all his own music when he signed for RCA. The facts are, Elvis played instruments to a level he wanted and needed to accompany his amazing and unique voice (as seen in 68 Comeback Special), which was close to pitch-perfect, had great range, and stylistically was more versatile than anyone. No one can sing rock, blues, gospel, country, and pop with the soul, passion, and authenticity Elvis did and no one connected more with an audience than Elvis when performing live on a stage, with that amazing voice, mesmerizing charisma, and electrifying energy. Elvis would not call himself a dancer, he had a natural rhythm and used to say he just moved to what he felt. He was a good actor according to some of the best directors and actors of the day, he showed great potential in his early, good movies and could have become a great actor had he been given the chance to do better scripts with more demanding roles. Unfortunately, he was hampered by his controlling manager in both his music and acting career, however, Elvis will always be remembered as a very talented and influential Legend!👑🐐

In the 50s Elvis took all the different musical cultures that he grew up with (r&b, country , and gospel ) and fused them into a new style of music. He also moved in an exciting way that no mainstream artist had ever done. Add to that his style, his different vocal manifestations, his talent for musical interpretation, and you have the reason why he was the big bang for how big rock music became in the beginning and why he was the dominant force for cultural change in the 50s and became the biggest influence for the stars of the future. Both Lennon and Dylan said Presley was the main reason they did what they did.
