As a wee lad, I grew up in Edinburgh in the mid-1950s. Your Edinburgh videos are so good. and they always make me nostalgic for a bygone era! One thing I do remember clearly is Binns Department Store, and it was spelt with two "n's" by the way!! So the clock at 8:39 was *THE* Binns Clock, not *A* Binns Clock. It was a famous landmark, as you rightly say!! Sorry!! 😀
It is so much fun wandering around cities and finding quirky architectural features. Years ago when I was walking around Cincinnati, Ohio I found a small, oxidized bronze sailing ship jutting out from the Western Southern Life Insurance building. I have lived in this area all of my life and didn't know this ship was there. Fun!
Edinburgh weather, horizontal rain so wonderfully descripted by Inspector Rebus. Was brought up in and around Edinburgh, while all around are enjoying sunshine, the Fife coast and Edinburgh coast are engulfed in haar.
I have known and seen the lighthouse since I was a wee girl, as you said Tony,it is the headquarters for the Northern Lighthouse Board. My late father was chief steward aboard the “Pharos” which was berthed in Leith Docks, it was decommissioned in the early 1980s , taken to Nassau and is now a floating hotel. I used to go on many trips with my father taking supplies to the lighthouse keepers, but this one time, I was really upset when I was told we had to stay out in the sea that night as the “wee man” had lost the key to the loch gates, ohh I was so upset 😂. Fantastic memories aboard the Pharos.
I knew about the binns clock because my friends boyfriend asked to meet her under the clock and this was in the early 1990s and he dump her (broke up with her) under the clock. Well both families were not too happy with the guy i swear there was talk about banishing him and being from Australia I asked what the big deal was and did I get lecture about this was the courting clock and you never disrespect it by dumping somebody under it. It was very serious lol
On my trip to Edinburgh I wandered through St. Cuthbert's kirk yard one afternoon looking for the ressurectionist tower because of one of your videos, but I stayed for quite a long time just for the incredible stones and crypts.
Your video does provide a lot of helpful information to me, an international student who has still been stuck in the UK due to the COVID-19 for almost a year! Finally, I am planning go to to your beautiful city next week! Many thanks!
Love this video! Not only 3 things you might miss, but a bonus sundial! Super neat! I need to go back thru the videos and have a map and plot out all the fun and interesting things to see that I didn’t know about on my first trip. You’re city is beautiful and interesting with so much history....I love it! #BreakfastAtTiffanys 😉
Never new about the Tiffany's window. I new about the rest. Our city is chock full of quirky and esoteric oddities..tip to all your readers Tony..ALWAYS look up at the buildings not just at street level often the best hidden architectural features are located there. This especially applies more to Glasgow than The capital.....well done Tony...ggtthb.
Tony this was such a fun video. Clyde and I are definitely going to look for those things when we come in a few months. I love lighthouses, so that was fun to see. What a beautiful day in the city.
I had been to St. Cuthbert's a few times and had never seen the sundial! Thanks for that one Tony! The sundial was probably designed by Mr. James Weir, the builder & designer of one of the many incarnations of St. Cuthbert's in 1772-1774. Mr. Weir's design was the last form of the Church before being replaced by Hippolyte Blanc's version as we see it today. Insrcibed with the motto: "Vivite Fugio" "Live ye, I fly"... tick-tick-tick goes the clock, best get busy with life! Nice one Broonfords! Take care, Paul.
Another very interesting video! I LOVE you walks and “talk about”!!! I’m afraid I will never get a chance to come there 😢 but..... I’m there in spirit!!! I love all the tidbits your talk about along your walks!! Thank you my friend! Keep it going please Bye for now Kathy Washington State 🇺🇸
Taking a city break / business trip next week with my better half. We will definitely be following this mini tour my friend.. :) Thank you for your beautifully captured little hidden gems. keep safe my friend . Love from myself and Paula .
I knew about the Tiffany window in St. Cuthbert's Kirk, but only bc I've been inside 😉 the other 2 quirks? nope! I love the clock's 'courting' history 💙 and the lighthouse being so tiny wouldn't really get a lot of attention, would it? If I had ever noticed it, I might have considered, that a retired lighthouse keeper lived there??? 🤔 Great stuff, Tony! thanks for the walk through, it makes missing Edinburgh, bearable 👋 - love from Denmark 💕🌸🌱
I love these "what you might miss" videos! I had not known about the clock or the lighthouse, but I have seen the Tiffany window (north side near the west end of the church). I was thrilled to see so much screen time given to St. Cuthbert's; I adore that place and visit it every time I'm in town!
Lovely video. Binns Department Store Princes Street building opened in 1935 when Binns expanded into Edinburgh. Binns was a northern English department store chain originally founded as a drapery business in 1807. It suffered during WW2 and was taken over by House of Fraser in 1952. The Binns name was kept for several decades after until it became Frasers. The famous clock was added in 1960. I remember my grandmother, who lived in Kerr Street, would walk up to Binns in the 1960s. It’s sad Princes Street has lost its grandes dames department stores, it no longer has any standout destination or notable independent retailers, so I suppose a Johnnie Walker tourist attraction is a better bet to keep going in that location.
I've must have walked passed these locations hundreds of times but never knew about these things. How fasanating Tony! I love learning about our city of Edinburgh. Great video as always! :)
I 'm sure its the light on your camera but for the ghost enthusiasts out there. From 2:34 on to 4min looks like your being followed by a Orb. LoL looks like a beautiful day in Edinburgh
A recommendation for a place to explore, history thereof, visible buildings, etc.: Hawthornbank Lane (Dean Village), especially what on the map is shown as the, "Dean Village Apartment" (how old is that building? I've no idea).
Good job you didn't ask me about the lighthouse i have fitted many a floor in there it is a huge building inside stretching all the way back to Rose Street. Great video as usual keep 'em coming.
A technical advise: when you film windows, water, metal... everything suitable of reflecting light you must place a Polarising Filter on the lens to avoid reflections from sun, light or the trees like here: 03:53. That can let you even see the interiors behind the window pane just by automatically erasing the refection. It's nice to keep discovering that beautiful city with you! I'm in love with Edina!
Kudos to you Tony for your respect of worshippers at the church. I am a atheists' yet I understand that people have other views. As long as they are not harmful and don't effect others, do what you want. Every time I travel and check out the beautiful churches of Europe I make sure to be respectful and mindful of those around me, even if I don't agree.
The Binns Clock, before messenger, twitter and mobile phones. And where the coffee shop on the corner, is now you could pick up some flowers for the love off your life at Interflora.
Will need to check the clock out as husband bottles whisky at work and worked in the original Kilmarnock Johnny walker plant before it closed also I have got an obession with lighthouses.
Love it. Keep it the great work. There’s been multiple things or places that you’ve talked about that we had walk by or seen and we wondered. Hmm… what’s the story behind this. 🤔
I’ve seen the lighthouse often and pointed it out. I always assumed it had some thing to do with the Stevensons. I know RLS and his family built a lot of the lighthouses in Edinburgh. Have you ever done the Robert Louis Stevenson trail in Edinburgh. Also, what about the last woman to be convicted of witchcraft and who is now buried in Edinburgh? Keep up the great work..
I worked with a man and we became friends at first We arranged to meet under that clock for our first date in 1991 I thought he was the one but unfortunately we parted in 2019
I know of no reason why you could not have gone inside the church. That would have been so interesting instead of alluding to the special window. I have enjoyed your walkabout videos in the past year or so, but this one - nah!

St Cuthbert's Kirkyard is a great location to watch the Hogmanay Fireworks, we did it in 2016 and they were right over our heads.

Tony this was such a fun video. Clyde and I are definitely going to look for those things when we come in a few months. I love lighthouses, so that was fun to see. What a beautiful day in the city.
Love the way you narrate the place!
Thank you!

This episode was a lot of fun; thanks for the quick facts, I'll be sure to show them off the next time I come visit!
Great video Tony!
I love the mini-lighthouse, so quirky! Lol it would be interesting playing a scavenger hunt game around Edinburgh 😂 Thanks for sharing Tony!
You are so funny Tony. Very informative and fun video. As usual you were great. Thank you!!

What an amazing voice you have ..lovely x
We are in lockdown again in Australia so hearing you talk about taking your coat off is very interesting ;)
Great idea! When we're there we'll have Breakfast at Tiffany's! Perfect! Big fan of Audrey Hepburn!
I love today walk im so going to look for that light house next time I'm ther
I 'm sure its the light on your camera but for the ghost enthusiasts out there. From 2:34 on to 4min looks like your being followed by a Orb. LoL looks like a beautiful day in Edinburgh
Haha, just a spot on the lens. Great catch though.
A recommendation for a place to explore, history thereof, visible buildings, etc.: Hawthornbank Lane (Dean Village), especially what on the map is shown as the, "Dean Village Apartment" (how old is that building? I've no idea).
Would make a good little treasure hunt/ pub quiz questions
My father in law worked in the lighthouse building after retiring as a captain. He will be chuffed you pointed this out.
Good job you didn't ask me about the lighthouse i have fitted many a floor in there it is a huge building inside stretching all the way back to Rose Street. Great video as usual keep 'em coming.
Ive noticed the lighthouse next to Rohan’s shop on George street but if you had asked me where it was randomly am assumed I wouldn’t of remembered

Flower shop was Rankins
@@keithramsay3340, your right. the Interflora logo always stuck in my mind.
Will need to check the clock out as husband bottles whisky at work and worked in the original Kilmarnock Johnny walker plant before it closed also I have got an obession with lighthouses.
Such a tragedy for Ayrshire to loose the Johnny Walker factories 😟
Actually the coat-on or coat-off bulletin could be handy information at times 😁 Be my tour guide, please!
The top
I love little facts that not everyone knows.
Love it. Keep it the great work. There’s been multiple things or places that you’ve talked about that we had walk by or seen and we wondered. Hmm… what’s the story behind this. 🤔
I must ask if you ever consider being a guide in Edinburgh and the surrounds?
You would be smashing at it
Maybe one day.
I’ve seen the lighthouse often and pointed it out. I always assumed it had some thing to do with the Stevensons. I know RLS and his family built a lot of the lighthouses in Edinburgh. Another great Informative Video. Have you ever thought about being a historian or a tour guide.
Not fit a while. Maybe one day.
Drunk people in Edinburgh!?Och i dinna believe it!
Thank you. I have just known the three
Do they still have the Oor Wullie statues out? Those were out when I was there summer 2019
There are a random ones. But mostly all gone.
What's with the date J 774 on the sundial?
I worked with a man and we became friends at first We arranged to meet under that clock for our first date in 1991 I thought he was the one but unfortunately we parted in 2019
Breakfast at Tiffany's! It's cute, but not nearly as funny as how pleased you are with your joke. You're such a stitch! 😆
Meeting your girlfriend , yes Binn's was one place , and the GPO was the other one , from when nobody had a car .

Hello humans, Hello wasp!
all building numbers in Edinburgh i.e George St start from the East End from the post office in Waterloo Place
Yeah, did that in a video about a year and a half ago.
Pssst. 1903 was 118 years ago, not 108. 😉
Mental math, not my strong point.😂
U SAID 108 ITS 118 YEARS OLD IS THE STAINGLASS WINDOW
It was bad mental math.
What happened tae your bunnet tony?
It was too sunny. 😂
I know of no reason why you could not have gone inside the church. That would have been so interesting instead of alluding to the special window. I have enjoyed your walkabout videos in the past year or so, but this one - nah!
I apologise for disappointing you. I felt it was right at the time since they seemed to be limiting capacity.
