Great video. Question I have is at 1/4 power on the 600, isn’t that 150 WS? Wouldn’t 1/8 power be equivalent to the flash at full power which is about 75 WS?

Hey Nathan, I find it really hard to use flash when I have to shoot a dark unevenly lit room. Which means the shutter speed needs be really slow to get that ambient exposure, but what about the flash settings? One stop above ambient is still really slow.
It sounds like you're doing two things wrong: not using the proper exposure settings, and not using the proper flash units (and technique). The AD200 isn't built as robust as the XPLR 600 and I know many who break the backscreen. Also, the XPLR has controls on the side, which make it super easy to deal with when doing ceiling bounces. The XPLR 600 is built like a tank.

So glad you made a video on this subject! I think everyone starts out with speedlight flashes, but I think as soon as you can afford to go with a moonlight you should get one. It just makes the most sense to have one moonlight on a stand as your primary and have a couple of flashes as backups. Having to move speedlights on stands around, keep multiple sets of batteries, track flash settings and transport them all - just makes getting a monolight the most cost-effective and efficient way to go. Your books and videos have done more to help me get started and start building a business than any other resource I've found on the web!

When you are taking the shots where you are adding the flash you must be either closing the aperture (which I doubt due to DOF issues) or raising the shutter speed. Are you raising the shutter speed beyond the sync speed? How does that work ?

If you're on that tight of a budget, then buy multiple speedlights. It's better to have distributed lights than one powerful one that can't light the entire length of the room.

Grreat as usual. I do mainly Virtual Tours. I end up with 3 different exposure and an HDR. No flash . The problem is getting the outside exposure blended in. Do you have any experience with this?
Hi Andrew, sounds like you are referring to "window pulls", getting a view of the outside. An easy way is to use what's known as the darken-blending mode using flash, which I show in my interiors book and also various videos on my channel too www.amazon.com/dp/B0755KXSL4

Very useful. I noticed reflections of kitchen cabinets and equipment in the kitchen windows for the kitchen shot, no doubt due to the sun coming through the windows and bouncing off the kitchen was etc. How would you go about eliminating the reflections in the window from the kitchen equipment and cabinets?
Reflections happen...wouldn't worry about them unless it was for a designer or developer. You could though shoot a non-flashed frame and edit those in. I talk about that in the advanced window pull section of the advanced editing book at www.amazon.com/dp/B0779PCVWC
Hi Nathan! Love your videos; thank you! I have your advanced editing and exterior books, but I don't see where privacy block on the windows is covered. It seems to be pretty rare, but I recently had 2 houses that had some sort of privacy block on the windows so I couldn't do window pulls, and no matter where I placed my light, I got a terrible reflection in the windows. What do you do in this situation; use HDR with no lights? Thank you!

Hi Nathan, thaks a lot for all good info. I've been following you for a while now. If I shoot using monolight like yours and it's to much light power, does it matter if I keep the light power high but lower ISO or lower the f stops to f8 or f16 ?
Lower light means less color cast, and there's a balance for quality. I think you meant shutter speed in your question (f/stops aren't in 1/8 increments), but it would be the aperture that makes the difference, while balancing the ISO. Great videos Nathan, I've learned quite a bit from your uploads. I'm curious though, you state around 12:35 to use one stop ABOVE ambient for the flash exposure. I usually use around 2 stops BELOW ambient at about f7.1 at 320 ISO. How do you determine your ambient values? Thanks.

Thanks for addressing a subject that I haven't been able to find guidance on from any other source on the web. I recently picked up the FlashPoint XPLOR 600 and notice the one beside you in this video has the diffusion panel attached. Do you use the 600 with the diffusion panel attached or was it just on while you were shooting this video and you take it off when shooting a job? Or, does that vary depending on the circumstances encountered on the job and, if so, under what circumstances would you use it?
I always keep the diffusion panel on, no need to take it off. 600 WS is way more than you'll ever need, keeping it on protects the bulb (you will eventually bump something), and you can never have enough diffusion ;)

LEDs are not nearly powerful enough, and could take too long onsite compared to using flash.

When you are shooting these shots, are you using auto white balance for ambient and for the flash shots? Or are you set to a certain kelvin temp and leaving it there for both flash and ambient?

If you're on that tight of a budget, then buy multiple speedlights. It's better to have distributed lights than one powerful one that can't light the entire length of the room.

Hi Nathan. I bought Altura Photo Professional Flash Kit for NIKON DSLR before I watched this video and read your ebook. Will this flash Altura works for real estate purpos?, should I just go with Yongnuo speedlight? Thanks!
I'm not familiar with Altura, but as long as it emits 5500K (which most flashes do), and you can control it remotely, then light is light ;) ...and it should work. YNs are cheap and the standard. More on that in www.amazon.com/dp/B0755KXSL4

Grreat as usual. I do mainly Virtual Tours. I end up with 3 different exposure and an HDR. No flash . The problem is getting the outside exposure blended in. Do you have any experience with this?
Hi Andrew, sounds like you are referring to "window pulls", getting a view of the outside. An easy way is to use what's known as the darken-blending mode using flash, which I show in my interiors book and also various videos on my channel too www.amazon.com/dp/B0755KXSL4

Why do you prefer flash shooting over 3 different exposures of each room and just applying luminosity masks?

This video tutorial was very useful for me. I always have to take a lot of shots to get it right with my AD200. I have also used the on-camera flash for small bathrooms at about 1/2 with walls about the color of those in your home, and it seems to work just fine. What would you say to that, Nathan? Very useful. I noticed reflections of kitchen cabinets and equipment in the kitchen windows for the kitchen shot, no doubt due to the sun coming through the windows and bouncing off the kitchen was etc. How would you go about eliminating the reflections in the window from the kitchen equipment and cabinets?
Reflections happen...wouldn't worry about them unless it was for a designer or developer. You could though shoot a non-flashed frame and edit those in. I talk about that in the advanced window pull section of the advanced editing book at www.amazon.com/dp/B0779PCVWC
Hi Nathan! Love your videos; thank you! I have your advanced editing and exterior books, but I don't see where privacy block on the windows is covered. It seems to be pretty rare, but I recently had 2 houses that had some sort of privacy block on the windows so I couldn't do window pulls, and no matter where I placed my light, I got a terrible reflection in the windows. What do you do in this situation; use HDR with no lights? Thank you!
Move your lights, take another shot, make sure it doesn't have reflections, then composite that frame in post.
Great video and helpful. I have a question, I use to do a lot of product photo which require mostly big flashes and power pack in studio. I would like to do real estate photo and I was wondering if you recommend using the smaller flash (how many do you recommend) or go with the bigger one and dragging a power pack with it (or them). Hi Nathan, thaks a lot for all good info. I've been following you for a while now. If I shoot using monolight like yours and it's to much light power, does it matter if I keep the light power high but lower ISO or lower the f stops to f8 or f16 ?
Lower light means less color cast, and there's a balance for quality. I think you meant shutter speed in your question (f/stops aren't in 1/8 increments), but it would be the aperture that makes the difference, while balancing the ISO. Great videos Nathan, I've learned quite a bit from your uploads. I'm curious though, you state around 12:35 to use one stop ABOVE ambient for the flash exposure. I usually use around 2 stops BELOW ambient at about f7.1 at 320 ISO. How do you determine your ambient values? Thanks.

Thanks for addressing a subject that I haven't been able to find guidance on from any other source on the web. I recently picked up the FlashPoint XPLOR 600 and notice the one beside you in this video has the diffusion panel attached. Do you use the 600 with the diffusion panel attached or was it just on while you were shooting this video and you take it off when shooting a job? Or, does that vary depending on the circumstances encountered on the job and, if so, under what circumstances would you use it?
I always keep the diffusion panel on, no need to take it off. 600 WS is way more than you'll ever need, keeping it on protects the bulb (you will eventually bump something), and you can never have enough diffusion ;)
