    Location: Beilinson Hospital, Israel
Setting: Designated Visiting Area of Hospital
I woke up at 3:50 AM, heart pounding, getting ready for what I’d imagined as a heroic moment: seeing my sons for the first time since surgery. I spent hours psyching myself up, convincing myself I could be the strong dad they needed. It took me 45 minutes just to stand up and shower, every move exhausting, but I forced myself to look as steady as I could, hiding the bruises, the bandages, the scars.
But the second they walked in, I crumbled. I couldn’t hold back the tears; I broke down completely. They ran over, thrilled, smiling, hanging onto me like I’d never left. They wouldn’t let go, and I couldn’t stop crying. It was this overwhelming mix of joy and heartbreak. I’d wanted to be their hero, but in that moment, I felt like anything but strong. Instead of relief, all I felt was how far I’d fallen from what I wanted to be for them.
That’s when I understood: mental toughness isn’t about looking strong or winning every battle. Sometimes it’s about showing up even when you feel like you’re losing. Today, I felt like I lost-but I know I’ll keep showing up, every single time, no matter how many times I fall short.
