- Eddie Vedder w/ Paul Shaffer & The Choir performed Warren Zevon ‘Keep Me in Your Heart’ at the David Letterman Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on 10/22/2017
[CBS Broadcast - 11/20/2017]
An amazing artist covering an amazing (and sad) song by another amazing artist, in honor of somebody (Letterman) who actually doesn't get enough credit for how great his musical sensibilities were as he brought band after band after band to his show when NOBODY else would give them airtime. Zevon after he had lost stature in the 70s....Tom Waits for years....Elvis Costello, Ben Folds,....The Foo Fighters when just starting out, god, so damn many. This is such beautiful appreciation and respect.
A dear friend of mine asked me to play this beautiful song at his celebration of life. I asked his wife and kids and they said they were expecting it! My guitar and I got about halfway through the song and I just broke down. His oldest son then came up to the front of the Church and helped me through the last two verses. I guess that’s the difference between a pro like Eddie Vedder and an amateur like me.
Your dear friend was lucky to have you as a friend!
Martin, I had such a very similar experience. In this case, the difference between you and Eddie were the circumstances. You were/are a dear friend, as well. You have kept him in your heart. Blessings to you.❤
You're no amateur but a being filled with love and personal connection to a dear dear friend. Your friend would have been proud of you and their son.
no reason to run yourself down, lad. your heart didn't waver.
You did good. You did REAL good.
A Warren Zevon farewell sung by Eddie Vedder, it doesn’t get any better .
I can’t even make it 20 seconds without crying
First chords choked me up.
Eddie has the unique gift of when he covers a song he makes you feel like you’re hearing it for the first time but at the same time giving it the respect it deserves ❤
Vedder is the master of making other artists melancholy songs sound their absolute best
Then you haven't heard the original.
I would be honored to have this played at my funeral!!
There's a train leaving nightly called "When All Is Said and Done." Dammit.
that line is tough
I’m about to lose my best friend of 30 yrs to a brain tumor. This song hits me so hard.
ME: I'll just watch this for a minute before I grade papers.
MY EYES: We're gonna leak water now.
Oh, Warren, we miss you so.
been there and did that. drinking tea at the local coffee house until the caffeine hurt my neck w 250 tests to grade for finals at Univ... and then you have a corner of the house with a man or woman, a guitar, a mike, and a story that needs heard.
Is there a song Eddie Vedder couldn’t cover…brilliant. God bless Warren Zevon
How on God's green earth does this have so little views...so good.
Easy. No autotune, no rapping and it has talented musicians.
@@ROOKTABULA just waiting for the kids to grow up. we were all like them and listened to, if I may say so and I will, good rap and trendy music. They`ll grow up. give it time. :)
Incredible version of an incredible farewell song by Warren Zevon! Good job EV.
Not sure if Paul composed the arrangement, but whoever did, did a fantastic job. Great job by the background singers. Instruments each come in at their perfect time. And with David Sanborn blowing that beautiful sound it's a win, win, win!!
I think it would have been Paul. He knew all of them very well.
This shakes me to the foundations... Tears, smiles, laughter, cries... All at the same time...
Warren, you will always be in my heart.
Beautiful song and very well done by Eddie!
Haunting, beautiful, it gives me goosebumps. Warren Zevon's lyrics are very touching. Eddie Vedder's voice fleshed it out viscerally.
,keep me in your heart for a while, how precious is that.
This song will be played at my funeral...
I wish he would have done it in 2022--- when my husband of 45 years died of cancer--- but after thay would make this song hard to hear--- now !++
I remember when Letterman devoted a whole show to Warren Zevon. Just an amazing talent.
I was very fortunate to get to see Warren perform and get him to sign a couple albums at a small venue in the early 90's. A masterful musician and briliiant lyricist.
Tears … such a beautiful song … one of Warren’s finest 😢❤
Letterman introduced me to Warren Zevon too 😢
Great cover by a true pro !! Eddie has a vast knowledge of music and does covers that almost equal the original ones, only man that did better covers was Johnny cash, ha, but when Johnny did a cover of a persons song it became his !! Keep up the great great work Eddie, cause we need more old souls like you to keep us not only entertained, but epically moved by your greatness !! 👍👍
I discovered Warren Zevon when his songs appeared in Californication as Hank Moody celebrated finishing his novel. Fantastic lyrics.
wonderful rendition . . . this dude's voice just gets better and better as he ages!! thanks for posting
This moved me to tears!
Brilliant,such a heartfelt rendition..raw voice and emotion
Well, that's just so beautiful.
My favorite version of a great song!!
Does anyone else feel Eddie should be knight or granted sainthood? Maybe I’m being too extreme, but to me I feel he transcends his artistry. His is music. I don’t know.
Thank you Eddie, Thank you, you have gotten me through a few messes.
Wow .. I cannot stop playing this .. Love Love Love Eddie's voice .. everything he sings but this is my new absolute favorite.
🙌 beautiful song, awesome job eddie
never gets old
😭 amazing, what an awesome tribute to the late great Warren Z. Eddie Vedder love you broskie 👏👏👏 no homo
This was awesome! His talent has no boundaries! I watch this often! Thank you.
Beautiful
Can't stop listening to this - yes, so much love! thank you
Tears just keep falling....
Eddie is amazing
Thank you so much for posting this. Once again, Eddie is such a class act.
Great addition by Dave Sanborne.
Wow, I don't know how I missed this, I am a huge Fan of Zevon and PJ.
THIS performance is on my STAYlist. Every time... it is both incredibly glorious in professing forever love while also hurting for the goodbye we all face at some end... lives and relationships are too short lived and too long gone... but hopefully lived and loved as well as we are able.
Playing with a Fender Tom Petty signature Kingman dreadnought... nice!
"Dave, Let me thank you because if it weren't for you I'd probably never known who Warren Zevon was"
DITTO Eddie, Me too
♥
Dear Wife can't have this played in her presence. And for the record, Eddie, I know about Warren because I picked up "Excitable Boy" on cassette when it came out my senior year in high school. I have just four years on you, but that's the difference those four years make. But you all knew that in Seattle 32-33 years ago.
Such a good song and Eddie does it justice
So much love
Beautiful, amazing! Love Eddie!
Meravigliosa...
Eddie does a very good tribute to Leanard. !!!
Oh and that Sax.....
Thanks Eddie from jan
Epic
After this, Ed said to Dave: "Thanks for bringing Warren to my attention." and Dave replied: "What?! Are you serious? Am I the ONLY person that knows about him?!"
Same here, Ed.
sax-david sanborne. :)
❤
I'm really surprised that EV wouldn't have known who Warren Zevon was. Werewolves of London he had to have heard growing up. You couldn't help but hear it.
Not to mention this song has been in so many movies and tv shows. Not to mention it won warren his only Grammy
I think Eddie meant Dave really put a spotlight on Warren Zevon, having him on his show all the time and being one of Dave’s favorite artists. We all heard Werewolves of London as kids probably non stop in the radio. Eddie knew WZ but just appreciated it more because of Dave. I thought the same thing like how did EV not hear WOL song a million times? This is the first I’ve heard this song tbh when EV played it and I’m almost ..
@@Bmorezoo1974 Right. I knew Werewolves, but not Warren. I think many are like that.
My funeral song
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
I want David Sanborn playing in my afterlife. If he’s there, I’ll know it’s Heaven.
Carl Hiaasen brought me here
I'll love you forever, you know that? We were so toxic for each other but oh, how we loved each other when we did. Gbye baby. You are the incorrigible... And will be in my heart for awhile.
Howard Stern sent me here
Me too
yup
Same. ❤

PBS, not CBS.
It makes me even more sad knowing that the old chunk of coal was there, listening to this song and probably reflecting on his own life. RIP Warren and Norm.
Not only that
enjoy every sandwich...
‼️♥️
Anyone know what arena this is?
John F. Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, Washington D.C.

Nicely done but no one really does it like Warren did.
Avril Lavigne should do a version of Keep Me In Your Heart. Why? OK, follow me here...
Avril Lavigne did a version of Dylan's Knocking On Heaven's Door. Warren did a version of Knocking On Heaven's Door. And I think "Hey it would be great for Avril Lavigne to sing Zevon's Keep Me In Your Heart".
She must know who he is/was. She is nearly forty and OLDER than Taylor Swift. Time for mature music!
It’s the black singers that makes it special
years ago Eddie stopped singing in a natural way. his intro statement is sincere and he loses me so fast... i wish it wasn't the case
Is that the wife Dave cheated on?
Paul Shaffer is so embarrassing.
Without Letterman he wouldn't have heard of Warren Zevon ? What a musical ignoramus
Love my bro.
Sounds slightly off.... like hes rushing.
Booo to you.
