In 2010 I had stage 4 colon cancer. And was given a year to live. I used to listen to this song and cry my eyes out because my kids were 7 and 9, and my wife was only 27. peace to my little brother. I played this song for my father the week he died. Now I listen to it for my brother, Todd, who passed away this week (1972-2021). He was a gentle soul, who was given bad "hand of cards" regarding his health. Happy trails, brother.
So sorry man. I have three brothers and I can’t think about losing any of them. We are all on the older side and one day it will happen, that’s life but as the youngest it’s on my mind.
Warren was a real musician, and writer. He died like a man could only hope, with dignity and honour. Never made anyone sad, made jokes about his demise, recorded a entire album with stage 4 lung cancer and shortness of breath and unfortunately, this is the last song he recorded in his house before passing. The VH1 documentary is incredibly sad, but courageous. Excitable Boy is one of the best albums ever front to back. Rip Warren
He was both a real musician and great lyricist, but he made a great many people sad throughout his life, most notably his ex-wife Crystal. Fortunately, he got help and made amends before his untimely demise. RIP Warren, and, enjoy every sandwich...
I expose this music to my grand kids....I didn't find him until it was to late......with that being said the music will live on because they'll know what true music is thank you Mr Zevon and ty for this tribute

I have no idea how this came up on RUclips for me tonight. When my husband died 16 years ago, two of his friends decided to create a 2-CD album of his favorite songs. I selected them, and Joe and Jim found recordings (not so easy back then!) and made the album. When it was delivered to me on what would have been Jack's 60th birthday, this song (by Warren) had been added. I did not know it; was so touched to have it included.
when my dear old dad, who was a well known lover of music and parties, passed away in 2007; I created a "Micks Mix" compilation of his favourite tunes and distributed them on disc at his wake. People still approach me to say how powerful and touching they find it to put on and sing along and spend a little time remembering their great mate and loved one.

My dad passed in may of this year and he loved Warren Zevon so much that he bought every vinyl and cd of his when cds became popular in the 90s. He used to play it when I was really young and I remember it much. Hearing this song in particularly really makes me miss him and gets me emotional because the lyrics resonate deeply
I have been a Warren Zevon fan for a very long time. All of his songs are intelligent, witty and honest masterpieces. With this song, he created the most beautiful, heartbreaking and honest song ever. Every time I hear this, it rips my heart out of my chest, and I can't help but cry. There are so many artists that I admire the list could go on forever. However, Warren Zevon is never far from my thoughts and is ALWAYS on my play list. His sense of humor, his world view, along with his pure musical abilities are among the best that ever lived. I miss him dearly.
Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath Keep me in your heart for a while If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less Keep me in your heart for a while When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun Keep me in your heart for a while There's a train leaving nightly called, "When all is said and done" Keep me in your heart for a while Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo Keep me in your heart for a while Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo Keep me in your heart for a while Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house Maybe you'll think of me and smile You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse Keep me in your heart for a while Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams Touch me as I fall into view And when the winter comes, keep the fires lit And I will be right next to you Engine drivers headed north to Pleasant Street Keep me in your heart for a while These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam Keep me in your heart for a while Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo Keep me in your heart for a while Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo Keep me in your heart for a while Keep me in your heart for a while Songwriters: WARREN WILLIAM ZEVON / JORGE A. Still will never watch RnR HOF induct rappers and minor players while talentless Jann Wenner extends his Zevon grudge- likely for some drunken insult four decades ago- to deny Crystal, Jordan, Ariel and the rest of us the knowledge that greatness and, yes, genius was finally acknowledged. I think Jackson Browne, Bruce, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan know a tad more about song-writing than you, Mr. Wenner.
I just put my kitty to sleep a week ago. I feel my Kitty's spirit coming through. He was my constant companion for 12 years. I miss him so much 😰 Thank you Eddie for bringing this song to me❤️
This is such a beautiful song! Eddie’s voice does this song justice. I sent this video to some close friends who have stuck by me throughout my life. They were there during my “ crazies “ and always made me smile when I didn’t think it was possible! Thank You All. I Love You!!!
Beautiful, breathtaking. Eddie Vedder is always so passionate and gracious. The back up singers vocals are just as beautiful . Lovely performance. David Lettermen has great taste in musicians and music. Thank you.✌️😘🦆
Eddie is The greatest singer songwriter of our time there's no doubt about it he can cover anything and his original / collaborative material is phenomenal. He certainly does this song justice....
Yeah, this song was the hardest one to handle for me. Warrens the only one I've ever known to share his last days on record., his heartbreaking farewell. Damn, here go the waterworks again.
I remember watching Warren perform this song on on Dave’s show right before his death. It was so beautiful and poignant, but he still had his little humorous streak. It was an unforgettable performance.
I remember Warren's performance of this song, too. This is a perfect song. It wrings every emotion possible out of you. My older son just got married and he picked this song to be played for "the Mom & Son dance," knowing how much I miss his Dad who died too young from kidney failure.
My 89 year old mother died two weeks after "The Wind" -- the album with "Keep Me in Your Heart" -- was released. I couldn't help but have "Keep Me in Your Heart" played at her funerals service. Not a dry eye in the house. "Keep Me in Your Heart" was the first song Warren Zevon wrote after being diagnosed with terminal cancer and the very last song he ever recorded. As with so many of his compositions, "Keep Me in Your Heart" combines touching, heartfelt lyrics with a beautiful melody. Warren Zevon was so much more than "Werewolves of London."
What is it about Eddie Vetter that draws us to him... that makes us love him so? Is it his kind & beautiful spirit... a spirit that would make a songbird or even a fragile butterfly trust him enough to willingly light gently in his hand, as WE ALL DO when Eddie takes the stage & begins to sing? Is it his constant breaking & healing heart that he shares with us thru his music? Is it his life... a story from an open book... his struggles thru tragedy, loss & lonliness... to finding love, friendship & spiritual healing as he's grown from boy to man... a story we ALL feel we can relate to & understand? Is it the anger & resentment he once felt & has overcome about people & events throughout his life over which he had no control... or his discovery of the warmth & tenderness that has always lived inside him? Is it his very presence... so uncomplicated, revealing & comforting that he MAKES us WANT to know him? It's ALL of these things. These qualities are his MAGIC. They're the reasons we feel Eddie Vetter is a friend. A close, dear, dear friend who is always welcome. And a friend who will have our love... forever. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
My good mate passed away from cancer in January, 32 years old, for some reason this song makes me think of all the good days playing darts and pool in the pub when we were younger without a care in the world, would give anything to go back to those better and simpler days
This is a beautiful song & as usual, Eddie did an amazing job. My husband loved Warren Z and played drums too. My husband passed away 7 years ago very unexpectedly at 51. The weird part was that him and Warren died within a few minutes of each other and we lived near each other. I hope that Tom (my husband) got to meet Warren and jammed together!! They are both truly missed still
I screwed up royally and I apologize! While this is a great song and Eddie Vedder does an awesome job, I mixed up Mr Zevon with Warren Helms. Mr Helms was the one who passed away on 4/19/11, within minutes of my husband and who played drums. I'm sorry for my f**k up
This is one of the best covers I have ever heard...and it’s not even as good as the original. That says a lot. Nothing can touch the original, but damn this version is so insanely good. I never could’ve imagined that anyone could possible do this song justice. But Eddie did.
David Letterman is the GOAT of both late night comedy, but also promoting and supporting musicians he knew were great and giving them the stage to shine for larger audiences.
i haven't heard Warren's version in years because it's so beautiful it makes me sob, i mean ugly cry. I do love Eddie, so I decide to watch it. Started to sob toward the end. This is such a honest and pure song that makes it so powerful. At Warren's last appearance on Dave's show, Warren gave Dave one of his guitars.
When my wife passed away in 2016, she had made it quite clear that this song had to be included in any service. A brother-in-law also sang some songs her siblings and I had selected: Neil Young’s When God Made Me, Peter Mayer’s Blue Boat Home, and Dylan’s You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. He did a fine job, but I insisted they play the track from The Wind; I knew in my heart she wouldn’t like a cover. I just stumbled across this version yesterday and immediately got tense, but after the first verse, I was completely taken. Mr. Vedder does an incredible job: restrained, solemn and affected but not melodramatic - everything about his performance draws attention to the words, and because of that, he is a wonderful vessel for them. Thank you all. Does the complete concert exist somewhere?
Although I am not a fan of Vedder's politics, unlike a lot of people in this country, I can still admire and give recognition to someone I dont agree with. He is undoubtedly one AMAZING artist !! God Bless him, I hope he continues to do well and stay healthy!
It's sad that you even have to mention politics. That you're so obsessed. I had no idea what Vedder's politics were. This is music. And pretty much every great artist is/was liberal so you'd better get over it if you want any enjoyment in life.
Wow this is beautiful. I have a hard time getting through this song often. I discovered zevon as an icon just before he passed. He’s been a part of me since.
i have always had a soft spot in my heart for Warren though i wasn't a big fan...he was so real to me...he was vulnerable...Eddie paid him a fine tribute here!

Amazing ! Warron Zevon one of the all time greats ! And what a beautiful version by Eddie Vedder - So honest and heartfelt )
This man sings like he is the song, performers and their music living in and through him.
In case nobody noticed... the sax player is the virtuoso, David Sanborn, thank you Eddie for this tribute to a legend, and for allowing me to believe
Thought that looked like him. Also a often Letterman first. Thanks for confirming.
Played this song at my brothers funeral. Not a dry eye in the room.
Warren we miss you so much...hope you are enjoying every sandwich in heaven
Enjoy every sandwich indeed! 🙏
Warren knew that only Jesus gives us emotional hygine. And he is there now with Him.
msilverstein47 amen
Well spoken my friend.
Every sandwich? Odd.
That voice comes from a special place, deep within Eddie - from the soul
credit to paul for the perfect arrangement and eddie for the perfect delivery on this. he took it seriously
OMG Eddie takes it to a different level altogether. We need this right now. Pearl Jam is like therapy for me. Now with my husband having advanced cancer and I'm the one taking care of us and our business , it's hard to keep yourself in check and going. Music heals..
Thanks for your love and support

There are so many artists that I admire the list could go on forever. However, Warren Zevon is never far from my thoughts and is ALWAYS on my play list. His sense of humor, his world view, along with his pure musical abilities are among the best that ever lived. I miss him dearly.
Is there anything Eddie can't do? This is so beautiful ....
Great job by Eddie V. Amazing song that gets me everytime.
Eddie has one of those voices that literally gives me goosebumps. Thank You Divine Spirit for the gift.
Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while
When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for a while
There's a train leaving nightly called, "When all is said and done"
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for a while
Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
And when the winter comes, keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you
Engine drivers headed north to Pleasant Street
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lo
Keep me in your heart for a while
Keep me in your heart for a while
Songwriters: WARREN WILLIAM ZEVON / JORGE A. CALDERON
Thanks for doing this
Still will never watch RnR HOF induct rappers and minor players while talentless Jann Wenner extends his Zevon grudge- likely for some drunken insult four decades ago-
to deny Crystal, Jordan, Ariel and the rest of us the knowledge that greatness and, yes, genius was finally acknowledged. I think Jackson Browne, Bruce, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan know a tad more about song-writing than you, Mr. Wenner.
What gorgeous lyrics. Thank you.
Eddie is connected to another dimension.
E K Oh I absolutely believe it too !!!
well yeah (yes)
Huh?
Immortality.
Warren was one of the greatest songwriters to ever grace this planet. Letterman for sure has excellent taste!
A great tribute to America's Best and most underplayed artist R.I.P Warren
Warren's farewell song, totally beautiful and moving !
Beautiful, breathtaking. Eddie Vedder is always so passionate and gracious. The back up singers vocals are just as beautiful . Lovely performance. David Lettermen has great taste in musicians and music. Thank you.✌️😘🦆
Thank you 🌻
Thank you, it gave me closure. You know who you are. And I will keep you in my heart for awhile.
Eddie Vedder singing this beautiful song is amazing. I love everything about it & how it makes me feel. ♥️
Eddie Vetter that was a Beautiful song! I'm sure Warren Zevon enjoyed it as well. I know Dave did.
Thank you, ✌🌼🌹
Smiles, absolutely beautiful indeed Lisa, feels really great listening, how are you doing?
Eddie, you sang that so beautiful, it made me cry. I see you have Tom Petty guitar. It was a nice remembrance of him.
Great song.... "Nobody gets out alive"... Thanks for posting.
Eddie is The greatest singer songwriter of our time there's no doubt about it he can cover anything and his
original / collaborative material is phenomenal. He certainly does this song justice....
Mr. Vedder gets all the credit here. David Sanborn on sax and the amazing back up singers deserve a lot of credit for making this performance magic.
Grandissimo Eddie!!bellissima voce!!melodiosa! Sublime!!!😇😇😇🤩😍😍😍😘😘♥️♥️💖💖💕🎶🎶🎸🎷💯
My father loved Warren. He passed 3 weeks after mom. They were together 65yrs ❤ love is a powerful thing rip momma and daddy
Made me cry, knowing the story behind this song
Yeah, this song was the hardest one to handle for me. Warrens the only one I've ever known to share his last days on record., his heartbreaking farewell. Damn, here go the waterworks again.
One of the greatest covers ever done
😍😍
My good mate passed away from cancer in January, 32 years old, for some reason this song makes me think of all the good days playing darts and pool in the pub when we were younger without a care in the world, would give anything to go back to those better and simpler days
Sanborn participating in this brings the tears....
I'm sorry for my f**k up
Levon Helms!! I don't know how I screwed this up so bad!?
This is one of the best covers I have ever heard...and it’s not even as good as the original. That says a lot. Nothing can touch the original, but damn this version is so insanely good. I never could’ve imagined that anyone could possible do this song justice. But Eddie did.
I have had heart issues. I had a stroke at 45 but doing better now.
Eddie should release this song as a single
Thank you, Eddie. Thank you, Dave. What a letter perfect tribute both to David Letterman and to Warren. We love you!
Bigtime.
Crystal Zevon Warren will forever be the soundtrack to my life..love you Warren rest easy and thank you for all the joy you gave me
Amen !
Oh Crystal, I’m so glad you heard and liked this! I loved-and love!-your wonderful book about WZ! Plenty of exclamation points here, and all deserved!
David Letterman is the GOAT of both late night comedy, but also promoting and supporting musicians he knew were great and giving them the stage to shine for larger audiences.
That's what I love about David Lettermen - He's not afraid to show his vulnerabilities and heart.
i haven't heard Warren's version in years because it's so beautiful it makes me sob, i mean ugly cry. I do love Eddie, so I decide to watch it. Started to sob toward the end. This is such a honest and pure song that makes it so powerful. At Warren's last appearance on Dave's show, Warren gave Dave one of his guitars.
Man this one gets me. I played Man of the Hour at my dads funeral. Love Eddies voice. Such raw emotion and passion. Great cover.
Made me cry. Lost my husband to lung cancer in Oct. This hit my heart so deep.....
God bless you and hold you with His comfort thru the tears.
rebmon, please see my reply to Allen C. Liles above. I offer you the same sympathy and wishes for your beloved husband. Remember him forever in love!
May your husband’s memory, and WZ’s, continue to endure as blessings. Despite the tragedies, the music lifts up us all, now and always.
Never met him. He's in my heart tonight.
Thinking of you rebmon100 because October will be coming up. Peace be with you still.
Eddie oooozes sole and the sax player is phenomenal as are the backup singers. If you loved Warren Zevon this song brings a tear. So well done!
Although I am not a fan of Vedder's politics, unlike a lot of people in this country, I can still admire and give recognition to someone I dont agree with. He is undoubtedly one AMAZING artist !! God Bless him, I hope he continues to do well and stay healthy!
Gulfcoastsunset couldn’t agree more
It's sad that you even have to mention politics. That you're so obsessed. I had no idea what Vedder's politics were. This is music. And pretty much every great artist is/was liberal so you'd better get over it if you want any enjoyment in life.
Moron and fuck politics
So nice we can agree on something beyond politics.
You have never seen his concerts
Never was a big Pearl Jam/ Eddie Vedder fan but my god he did this justice and it hit the soul just as hard as Warren's version did.
I love this, so beautiful !!! Eddie Vedder your voice souls the soul ❤️
Smiles, absolutely beautiful indeed Colleen, feels really great listening, how are you doing?
Wow this is beautiful. I have a hard time getting through this song often. I discovered zevon as an icon just before he passed. He’s been a part of me since.
i have always had a soft spot in my heart for Warren though i wasn't a big fan...he was so real to me...he was vulnerable...Eddie paid him a fine tribute here!
Eddie - your voice carries on Warren Zevon's legacy through your legacy in an unbelievable way. Wow!
Just lost my Dad, my best friend, and forever loved and this song sums it up- if I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less-
How this song feels after losing someone you loved dearly 😔😔
