Thank you so much for your kind words regarding Stationfall. As the developer, hearing someone both understand and appreciate the game as much as you do makes all the work we put into it worth it. I also curate the First Look section at PAX Unplugged, so now I kind of wish we could've met. Maybe some other time!
Ooh the first one in terms of anonymity sounds a little like veiled fate which is an excellent mix of trying to read people and thier motives, sweing chaos to cover your tracks, and strategically trying to move your character along the course of the game. I really enjoyed it when I played it a few months ago for the first time! Also welcome to living in the UK I hope you settle in and find everything you are looking for ❤
Glad to hear you are doing well Carly! Found you from NRB and decided to find and follow you. You just so happened to post a video that same day which made it easier to find you. Can’t wait for more Carly Content!!
Stationfall is so rad, great pic! I love that each play has a both an in-game and out-of-game story, which usually intersect but can often have large differences.
Happy 2024! Love seeing lesser-hyped games like Stationfall getting such a a glowing review from you! A great list of games that I’m looking forward to checking out. Can’t wait for your upcoming videos!
"Gorgeous AND brilliant. The triple threat." That's Carly. I quite enjoyed Stationfall too! Great list. Oathsworn just moved up on my list of games to get to. Congrats on the successful move.
"everyone would blow up and maybe that's a problem for me" I always love games where scenarios like this are potentially good for someone and not the be all end all. Most people at table are saying "aww" and one or two people "woo!" 🤣
Yeah I've played a game before where I was like "he's obviously going to release project x. We need to stop him!" And was purely met with cheeky grins and blank stares. Like whelp. I'm fucked.
Stationfall and Oathsworn have been on my radar for the longest time but I'm trying to be fiscally responsible as well. Decisions, decisions. Also, congrats on the big move. Hope you're settling in well!
I made a similar move from the states to London a few years back. It was a great adventure. Ended up coming 'home' but will always fondly remember my time there!
I like that you put Stationfall and Nemesis in the same category. Both are games that I adore but everyone I introduce them to bounces off them because they either want more strategic payoff for the effort they put in or they don’t care to engage with the wacky unpredictability of the emergent story. I, on the other hand, will deal with a lot of rules overhead for a zany story 😂
Stationfall is an outstanding choice. I taught it to 30 different people last year. I love how wildly different the characters are and what hilariously thematic answers they have to the question of what you do when you've got 13 minutes to live. My favorite characters are the telepathic rat with its hunger for revenge on the people who've subjected ratkind to cruel medical experiments, and tbe legal bot with its indifference to anyone's life or death as long as they sign an NDA before they leave. 😂
I love Gloomhaven. But 3 Chapters into Oathsworn and already I feel it is the superior experience. I used to love the Fighting Fantasy/Lone Wolf Game Books, being drawn to the story/combat combination, and Oathsworn is like that on steroids, so it brings me full circle to those books I loved during my misspent err... I mean, nerdy youth. For those reasons it is my absolute fave game, and I look forward to playing it many time with different characters. Love your work. Cheers.
Revive is fantastic and deserves more recognition, and its theme is very well implemented! I also love 3 Rings Circus, another beautiful game that captivates with its mechanism and incredibly attractive theme.
Thanks for sharing. Oathsworn was my GotY for 2022. I was fortunate to back it on KS and had my copy relatively early and immediately started playing it solo wiht 4 characters.
Good luck on your new adventure. One thing I really appreciate about Oathsworn besides the things you mentioned is the simple persistence mechanisms. You can leave the game and come back without worrying about recording a bunch of information -- even in the middle of a boss battle.
Hi Carley, since seeing Stationfall at SPIEL and now in your video, I really got interested in it for our boardgame group. Would be great if you ever decide to show more of this game and give a feel of playing it. Also: Good to hear you have settled and found your place again.
Love the last two picks, mostly because I've started playing them with my 13yo daughter. GWT was very intriguing for her and Oathsworn we enjoy together. Welcome to Europe 😊
Your intelligence, calm nature, and game picks are excellent, and you're lovely on top of it all. Three cheers for not bowing to the cult of the new, as well. LOL
Welcome! :) Congrats on moving... thanks for sharing your top. I'm intrigued by 3 ring circus and Kelp. Should look more into 2 players as I play mainly with my brother. I love also GWT
I do think 3 ring circus plays well at 2 players too, if looking for 2 player compatible games. Revive also kicks butt at 2. Happy to recommend more not on this list. I usually like games that are solid at 2 and 3 players most. Just easiest to get into rotation. Plus, it's a lovely experience to share something with someone specifically.
Ohhhh snap! Carley shaking up board gaming influencer game by calling out traditional styles, calling top 10s "nonsense". Lol Love your content, glad you're back and the move went well!
Top 10s and lists generally sell well. But the structure of them often serves monetization and algorithms more than the audience. I try to create content that I myself wouldn't be annoyed by or feel roped into.
@@GnarlyCarleyGaming there’s the Dice Cup and Ludorati in the middle of town as well as other tabletop gaming places. I love just outside Nottingham in Kimberley and we have a gaming day every few months called KimCon!
Hey Carly! I’m glad you like stationfall! I havent played it with my friends yet but I know they are going to love it! I have to ask did you play with the miniatures for the game?
Hello! Thanks:) 1. I was ready for a change, but exact move was mostly chasing who I wanted to be with 2. Nottingham! 3. I hear Jon is a lovely soul, but I don't know him personally. And my goal in moving was personal and less to foster collaborations, so I'd say not a plan or pursuit.
Ive been looking at all these old male nerds trying to find some good game tips - and suddenly there is this super cute nerd with new and interesting tips that no one has mentioned? Subbing right now and getting Stationfall :D thanks!
Oathsworn is definitely on my list now, I love games with a great story. I love Ark Nova, have you played the expansion yet? If so, What did you think of it?
I love love love Ark, and I have and enjoy the expansion. I've not gotten it to the table enough, because I still think teaching the game without it makes sense and I've been slowly getting more and more folks on the Ark train. Plus, I like to savor expansions slowly. Not a rush to introduce them. Never encourage folks to buy them quickly. One of the joys of expansions is how it can revitalize something you already love. While you're loving and still exploring a game , sometimes I hold off on the new for the benefit of longterm joy.
So far, nothing in the works. My goal in moving was personal, not professional. I won't say it is impossible, but it's a thing I'm careful about. As I make home here, I want my gaming community (including others who make content) to feel valued by me for who they are as a person. Introducing professional relationships can reduce personal ones, and right now, in home making, my care and concern is building a loving community. We will see what else unfolds.
Well that's great. I wish you all the best and I hope everything works out well for you. I like hearing your opinion on different games. I can pick and choose what I think I would like and buy them. Helps me save money.
I share a lot of my life online, but it's largely game related, so while not shy about the move, it also seemed, well uninteresting to a game audience, along with being sudden. It was a personal choice to be where and with whom mean the most to me. Life and games brought me connections all over the globe. It's been life changing. We will see where I end up, but for now, my heart has pulled me to Notts. :)
Sooo, super secret agent on his majesty's secret service then. Gotcha ;). Personally I always find it very interesting whenever someone moves across countries. And I think your audience isn't just here for the games, but for you as a person as well. Of course I can understand why you don't want to tell all the details, and you certainly don't have to. Anyway, welcome to Europe! May you try all the new food, snacks and beers! @@GnarlyCarleyGaming
How come you're in the UK recording this video with all those games behind you but you say you still haven't brought any games from the US yet? 🤔 Is this not your home?
This is my home! And I brought 15 of those games with me. The rest are now a part of my home in one big ole shared collection (I never have and likely will never live alone - not a solo gamer, not a solo liver). So the video will talk about my priorities and the games I specifically love and brought with me. In part some of those choices were made with the games I knew would be here in mind. Games I love like Brass Birmingham and Ark Nova already lived here, for example. But if they weren't, I'd still make fairly similar choices so just will talk about the whole experience and my picks. It isn't by any means a Top 15 games. But all the 15 are probably Top 40 to me or otherwise emotional choices.
