    It's good to hear that it's a properly revamped experience rather than just a change of art and an errata of what was before. Having played through all of Gloomhaven and Jaws Of The Lion, I don't feel a burning need to dive into 2nd Edition. That story was told and I enjoyed it. I've now got Frosthaven and have been diving deep, deep, deep into that - I think that's going to keep me busy for a few years then maybe I'll look at the 2nd Edition if I feel I need it. I'm glad that this updated experience exists for people who are playing Jaws right now and want to dive into the BIG box game afterwards though.

    Currently starting out with JotL and I think the OG Gloomhaven will probably be something to get into some time next year.
    I just heard that a second edition was gonna come out but couldn't really imagine what that meant since I haven't played the first edition but now I feel like I should definitely wait for the second edition, thank you!
    Please do another spoiler free video after the official release where you just talk a bit about the beginning classes and maybe say if the final version is still better than Gloomhaven 1.0 😊
    Amazing video either way!

    My wife and I are PC gamers who are trying to spend some more time together away from the PC, and we've been playing Jaws of the Lion together having an absolute blast, so we're already looking to grab Gloomhaven and Frosthaven. I've been agonizing about whether or not to wait for the second version of Gloomhaven and this video has been valuable to me. I still can't decide whether to buy 1.0 or to wait for 2.0 but thank you!

    Well, was on the fence since launch. Have decided to keep 1st E for Crimson Scales and grab up the summons and 2nd E. Frostaven has been AMAZING and I can see them adding in the things that make frosthaven that next level I to 2E. I enjoy hearing you talk about Xhaven fan girl or not. I 100% get why Isaac wanted to make it, as you said, it's his baby and I bet 1.0's imperfections really bothered him. It's hard for me to imagine 2.0 selling really well, between Digital being a thing and Frosthaven's recent fulfillment. Hope I'm wrong tho!

      I think Cephalofair is smart in this. They are combining the smaller projects: the role playing game, the minis, 2.0. In this way they can build amazing things for smaller segments of Xhaven players. "I may not want the roleplaying game, but I'd love the minis" or "I want the characters for the campaign I'm already playing but not the whole box"...I think it'll do well cause they understand the demand for these things and are using a collective fundraising to bring all the joy to life

I'm currently playing through Jaws of the Lion with a group, so I figure I'll just sell my basically new OG Gloomhaven and bid on the second edition. Waiting over 2 years for 2.0, minis, and update map book for frosthaven is way too long, especially if youve already partially started. But still, getting 2.0 for a new player is good, but hoping for the minis will be too drawn out.

      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +2

      I'd say there's a variety, but "kill them all" still shines. I think it sort of has to personally...character cards are built around it. Sometimes (class dependent) I get frsutrated by non-kill focuses scenarios as not every class is built for escape/other quests...but all are built to fight or support fighting. So I think by default this sort of regins

    I have a question, not sure if anyone asked.
    If I have just played jaws of the lion and want to either go gloomhaven 2.0 or frosthaven the main game. Which one will you recommend. I think frosthaven is just the advanced version of them all where gloomhaven 2.0 is just reflecting their learning when making frosthaven. If frosthaven takes everything one notch up - then should I not bother about this 2.0?

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +1

      Just answered this! My answer was: This is tough one. I love the world building aspect of Frosthaven (community resources and building up the outpost), but I do think there's more to appreciate in Frosty if you've played GH (sort of who it was designed for). Plus classes in GH are great and FH steps it up in funkiness. This is good, but again....sort of better once you've dived into Gloom. So my gut says GH 2.0.
      Frosthaven does step it up in some ways...but in many ways is joyful because of the GH experience that builds to it. I'd say with the changes in 2.0, I'd start there personally if you intend to play through all

    Can character card improvements from 1e carry over to 2e (stickers)? Is there too much different to do this?
    I've never purchased a new edition of a game that I already own. This case is different for me. I've played Gloomhaven to death but I am ready for a replay.

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +1

      The cards have been completely redone. It isn't just a better version of existing, but many are fully new so improvements wouldn't fully carry over. I'd say you could let an improvement 1.0 card into the mix of choices for your character, but it may not work well with the new balance/system and sort of clash with the reasons the made those choices in the first place.

  • @mannypinerio9415
    @mannypinerio9415 Год назад

    So... my exact questions are about characters without spoilers. There were several we unlocked in 1.0 that we really wanted to like, especially ones that summoned things... but they were essentially dead weight in the party compared to other characters. Does this edition bring those characters more inline with the Frosthaven approach to these types of characters? I hear reworks and rebalances of characters and that is really my biggest upside of a 2nd edition. The better story is great, but there were a lot of characters we didn't give much time to because of how bad they were... and I would love to go rediscover them and give them the love we hoped we would in 1st edition.

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +3

      I think all characters, both good in GH 1.0 and not, are just better in 2.0. The OP ones are fun, more tame, but in a way that makes them more interesting...and the classes you speak of are definitely better balanced for play and keeping up with the party. I am NOT a summon lover in FH/GH personally. I think they typically scale poorly overtime and levels. But my whole party agreed they were better. And one of the biggest boons was making weaker summons, non-loss when they were loss prior. Makes them a lot better card-wise.

I can't truly account for how similar given I played the prototype that will change. My feeling is roughly half is new or modified in terms of story itself. Did you find that the game was harder? Many of the really strong abilities got tuned down, stuns removed, etc. Did you play at a lower difficulty because of this?

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад

      There are new systems that I cannot speak about that kept the difficulty at a great modifiable, challenging, and interesting level. We largely played at what was recommended in the campaign. We upped it a bit as we got used to characters/when we had characters that played nicely together but never had to lower it

    Let say I play the original Gloohaven and Gloomhaven 2 back-to-back. Will it feel like playing the same game, the same story twice? Asked in ahother way, what would be the best comparison:
    - The original Super Mario Bros vs the Lost Level: basically the same game with different levels?
    - Super Mario 3 vs Super Mario World, same basic gameplay with enough difference to feel like distinct games?

    We have played most of JotL, and have GH, FC, Crimson Scales and its expansion, and Frosthaven
    Given how long it will take to fulfill 2.0 and the minis, would you say there is any reason to not just play GH 1.0?

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад

      Depends on your timeline of course. If you're already in the position with a group eager to get started...then get started. The 2.0 will be a more refined experience, but I love 1.0 and I think any group that's already going can just do so if they'd rather not wait

    thanks for the vid. :) question: for someone who hasn't completed (read: we're not even 20 scenarios into) GH v1.0, would it be worth it to just get the new-and-improved character envelopes? are they sufficiently different such that it'd be worth it to own both sets without getting the entirety of GH2.0?

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +1

      This is the toughest to answer...mid game questions. I think the characters are better balanced and I also think they play differently enough that it'd be fun to have both. I think it's the perfect compliment to "let's get some new flair for our existing campaign" without having to disrupt it. If you've already started, I'd say enjoy the campaign you have and snag the characters if that will bring your party joy

    4. You and your mates - why are you excited since you already played GH2, excited for what?

      Hi! I played for the first few months of this year. It wasn't a 1.5ish version, it was the prototype design for 2.0. We played a three player game and are still quite excited for the release as our job was to give feedback for further changes...and we are excited for the final product to come from what we've already seen and played.
      I create lots of gaming content and Cephalofair knew that I had played GH a lot from my posts (largely instagram). They thought my experience would be valuable in giving feedback to the changes within the game and asked me to get a group together to playtest.

      I wish I could say, but I wasn't given a production copy of 2.0. I was just playtesting so I cannot speak to box final size, specs, and component mods. My guess is likely a very similar design, but hard to say for full compatibility's sake.

    I wonder if the story matters more too because of how quickly you played through the campaign. We normally play one scenario a week so the story gets a bit lost over time.

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад

      I didn't play that quickly for other campaigns and story did just more so lost for us too. I think the way it's now done, that is less likely. You may lose some, but there are more threads and notably moments in the new one (and new systems) that I think will help regardless of pacing

    What's your opinion on which version of Gloomhaven is better for first time players, especially taking into consideration the price (vs current retail price of first edition) and needing to wait until March (or the following January if one wants the minis)? My fiance and I are currently playing through Jaws of the Lion, and have played a 1 hour demo of Frosthaven at a convention, but have no experience with just regular core Gloomhaven so we're not sure which to go with.
    Thank you very much for the video! It's nice to be able to see some actual comments instead of just speculation, because the backerkit campaign is incredibly vague.

      Hey there! I'd say GH 2.0 will be better to hop into before Frosthaven, but let your timing guide you. If you're close to done and are ready to hop into Frosthaven, you can. Or I'm happy to recommend some of the other campaigns I've loved at 2 players if you're thinking of the wait between. You can absolutely dive into FH, but GH before frosty is def better if possible in my opinion.

  • @Trueflights

    I have no problems with the update and all, but this is so different that it should have just been a new game and not just an overhaul to the original. A new story, new characters, and everything else would have been much better as a new game and there would have been a lot less blow back about the whole thing as well.

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming  Год назад +1

      I disagree. The story and characters aren't new. They are updated. Frosthaven was a whole new game. This was an update, properly so. Communicating it as a new game would've been wrong as it is the same main story woven and types of characters/goals/etc.
