Great video. Be proud of yourself Paul. I know the time and effort that went into making these two tutorial videos and the result is a testament to that. They are, and will remain, the definitive tutorial videos on the game.
@@GamingRulesVideos So nice to have it in a separate video for those of us returning from playing gloomhaven. Skimming the rule book for FH changes + this video covers everything so well.
We (weathered gloomhaven players) finally played 2 scenario's of frosthaven tonight, loved it, and were then completely at a loss. This video helpen a ton, can't wait to get back into it
I appreciate this video a lot. I find the Outpost Phase an interesting if not tertiary addition to the GH / FH experience. Your video does a great job explaining what it's all about.
Absolutely invaluable video for getting your head around the new Outpost phase of this mammoth game. Thank you so much for this Paul. I’ll be revisiting this a lot 👍🏻
My friend recently got his copy and now we've unpacked everything and built the organiser we're excited to play! Once we eventually get around to finishing Gloomhaven that is 😅 We're probably a bit rusty with the basic rules, plus with everything that's new in Frosthaven this was really useful :D Great video!!
This video makes me so mad at the rulebook. We were lost after scenario 1, assumed all the wrong things. Now I watched this and it all makes sence! Thank you Paul for this video were gonna have to redo our first outpost phase now ;-)
Thanks for putting this together, I found the explanation and setup of the outpost phase in the instruction booklet to be a bit confusing and your video really cleared things up.
Killed it Paul! Been playing this game for a couple weeks, I had most of the Outpost phase right but was really nice to actually see it. Visual learner here!
Thanks for this detailed outpost video. This made me realize I DIDN'T care about the outpost phase at all. Thankfully GH 2.0 is coming out soon so I will be able to play with the updated classes without having to waste time with the HOA Manager phase aka the outpost lmao
We just played JotL, so the Outpost Phase is totally new to us. You explained it so great that reading the rules after watching the video was a piece of cake. This video will be our reference when starting Frosthaven in the next days and playing our first Outpost Phase. Thank you, absolutely great work.
Thanks for this second video. A lot of new stuff in this one. I'll think I'll have to watch it again as and when I eventually receive my copy of Frosthaven. I really like the building of the outpost feature that has been added since the original Gloomhaven, plus the Alchemy element, with the greadual learning of the potions as and when different ingredients are mixed together.
Thank you for this video! The rules explanations are clear and to the point. I watched your Gloomhaven video a bunch of times to get that game down. Excited to see you're back for Frosthaven.
Thank you for this great video, Frosthaven adds a lot of additional concepts and complexity compared to Gloomhaven and this is invaluable in picking apart and understanding! Many thanks!
Now this is indeed far more interesting and interactive than the city phase in Gloomhaven. Thank you for the video, sharp and clear explanation,as we like it 😉
So much to take in, even for those of us who have played JotL and Gloomhaven. You've managed to break it down perfectly in these 2 videos. They will be invaluable when we get round to playing.
There are many conditions that the rulebook gose over, like rates for solo , if you play solo you might only get perk points for the same class that retire
@@GamingRulesVideos our in person scenarios are going to start at night when the littles are asleep. We are gonna be on a tight schedule to get some gaming done.
Thanks Paul! I’m loving Frosthaven! I’m about 8 scenarios in but I’ve unlocked three classes and just retired my first character, can’t wait to start a new one! Speaking of starting new characters, I’ve been wondering whether it’s possible to cheese things a bit, even unintentionally, by creating new characters, selling their items for cash, and using the money to pay for buildings. At least with just two characters, I’ve been cash-strapped so far and I know you can create new characters, setting aside your old ones and returning to them if you like. I don’t want to cheese anything but it feels like it might happen if I create characters to try out new classes and sell their items for money.
In the rulebook, in the "creating a character" section, I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it say you get 30 gold to spend on items and any excess gold after buying those items is lost. But I guess you could then sell those items for some gold? Yeah smells a bit cheesy.
Ok, I need some clarification. Video says at the start of the campaign, the Hunting Lodge can be built (requires Prosperity 1). When does the party gain Prosperity and/or does the game simply start at 1? Read through the book once, so I could’ve and probably did overlook some things.
Question: how do you calculate Frosthaven's total defense? Is it the value from the morale plus value stated from building walls? Anything else included in that before it get's modified?
1. What can I know one week passed? Does one scenario mean one week? 2. When I made event decks of outpost/road, I don't know how many I can use. How many and what number of event cards should we have as starting deck? Should I shuffle them before start?
1. Check the rules on the Outpost Phase again. You cross off 1 week each Outpost Phase. 2. The rulebook wasn't very clear on this unfortunately. You take cards 1-20 of each deck as your starting decks.
Great Video. One question: Back when the Kickstarter started I have heard that you can support each other with crafting but you said that that a player must use resources from the personal supply and that there is no way of getting materials from the town supply to a player? So there is no way of supporting each other with crafting/buying of items?
I feel like I am missing something very obvious, but cant find it, what does the "moon" icon mean on the building cards vs the sun icon? Is that winter vs summer in when you can take actions?
From the official FAQ: boardgamegeek.com/thread/3001013/official-faq-frosthaven-no-rules-questions-please What are the Sun and the Moon on the building cards? The Sun effect happens during Building Operations (Step 3 of the Outpost Phase), when you sequentially go through the building card deck in order. Most operations here are optional, but any Wrecked building effects are mandatory. The Moon effects are ways to interact with the building during Downtime (Step 4 of the Outpost Phase).
Hi. I'm sorry - its been a long time since I made this video, and I don't know the game well enough to help. Either facebook groups or the BGG forums should be able to help.
I don’t understand how the defence track works. At 2:55 your text states ‘The starting defense is is 0+ your morale bonus (set after scenario 1).’ Confusing. Should this simply state ‘The starting Total Defense is zero’? Your video makes it sound like the total defense equals the defense track but that can’t be right as the book example shows a defense value of 35. If I go up from 7 to 8 morale, does this add +5 to the ‘total defense’ value? If I then drop to 7 then go back up to 8 again, do I apply this +5 to the ‘Total Defense’ value again? I’m so confused!
Both the designer and the playtesters helped me with that part of the script and the video, so apologies if it is not clear. To say that the starting defense is 0 is not quite true, because after scenario 1, it might be higher. Let me try and put it another way. It does start out at 0, but is then modified by your morale. So, if your morale is 8, that gives you a +5, so you actually write "5". If you later build a wall which gives +5, you change the 5 to 10. Then, if morale drops to 7, you lose the +5, so you change it back to 5. Does that help?
Hi Paul, I checked your video, because I'm near to start with my first scenario and I found one topic after double check it with the rulebook, I don't understand. Maybe you can help me here. My question is regarding the wrecked situations of buildings. I can't understand when a building is wrecked or how this damage at all works in detail. I write how I interprete it and please correct me if I'm, wrong. For example the situation is this, that I have an attack of 50 which goes against 3 buildings and I have 1 motivation and no material left. - The first attack comes and I draw the wrecked card. I think that this building is automatically wrecked. - The second attack comes and I draw a modifier which is not high enough to cover the power. To repair this I must now loose my last motivation because I have no material and I think I can't say that I want to save the motivation. - The third attack comes and I draw a modifier which is not high enough to cover the power too. Because I have no material and no motivationn left, what happens than? Is the building than wrecked too? Is this correct what I wrote or did you found a failure in one of my three bullet points?
@@frankschmid4100 Apologies. Let me clarify. Damaged and Wrecked are different things. If the defense check fails, the building is damaged. You must immediately pay for the repair if you can with resources. If you do not have the resources, you must lose 1 morale. This represents the town having to repair it themselves. But either way - the building is repaired. Wrecked is something different. That happens when the wrecked card is drawn (or something else tells you to). So, in your example: the first attack wrecks the building. Nothing you can do. You can try to rebuild it later in the Outpost phase. The second attack, the building is damaged, you cannot pay to repair it, so you MUST lose 1 morale. No choice. The third attack - again - damages the building. If you cannot pay to repair it, you lose 1 morale. If you are already at the bottom of the morale track, I don't think anything else happens. I hope that makes sense. Buildings do NOT get wrecked just because you cannot afford to repair them if they are damaged.
@@GamingRulesVideos Sorry, my parenthetical citation was referring to the page number in the rulebook with the quote. I'm not sure if the effects of the building are optional or mandatory since there's nothing to differentiate between the two, i.e., no symbology or color difference.
You actually want to always retire characters if possible because that's one of the main ways to progress the campaign. You need the building unlocks. Also, there's nothing to stop you from creating the exact same character again after retiring if you don't want to play something else. Yes, they will be a lower level at first and have fewer items, but it would still be the same class.

With forced linked scenarios, if you fail them and go back to Frosthaven, can you then go try them again later?
When you get 1 prosperity, do you just check 1 little box, or go up to the next level?
Whenever you gain prosperity, you mark 1 box.
When you mark the box with the number in it - that is the new level.
