Very interesting idea to share Carley - the games chosen and your reasons. That they are more unusual choices (in my inexperienced knowledge on what other games I regularly see mentioned, anyway) made it different and a unique perspective to you. Best wishes for your new adventures in the UK.

At one point i had 300+ games. I was single, had a job that allowed more gaming time, and LOVED collecting things. Collecting board games made sense to me because it wasn't just something i bought and then kept in a box on a shelf. Plus they typically hold their value pretty well. Three years into my collecting i got married. My wife wasn't a gamer, and 6 years later she still isn't. We have a little one now as well. Currently my collection is down under 100 and that's where i want to keep it. Buying/selling games has become part of my love for board games. I watch content creators (like you) play games. If i think said game is up my alley, I'll pick it up. But i hold zero attachment to that game, and if it sits too long, or i want to buy something big that has a ton of boxes and is expensive, i will sell. My philosophy now is buy/try/love it or list it. I don't always get 100% ROI of course, but i usually get enough to justify what I'm doing. Congrats on the cull and best of luck in the UK.

This video was fascinating to me because it was my first visit to your channel and it had so much relevance to so many games I am learning and trying to get off my shelf of shame/opportunity. The game I finally got to the table for the first time was Lisboa, which was my first Lacerda and I loved, so it made me really want to try Kanban EV. The two games I've been poring over, punching out, and ordering sleeves for are Boonlake and Revive, and I've been excited to try both. Another on my shelf of shame that I've been reading about to get myself excited about it was Lorenzo Il Magnifico, and a lot of the discussion around that game refers to a debate between it and Grand Austria Hotel, which now seems like a great wishlist game. I have both Terra Mystica and Gaia Project waiting for a time I can teach them successfully to the light gamers I usually play with, and Obsession is one I have played and am very fond of. It was just odd how timely this video was and how much crossover there is. Also, very interesting approach about not needing to keep the ones that everyone has, even if they are favorites. Glad I found the channel. Somehow this was one of the recommended videos when I was looking for discussion about Revolution!, which is one of my picks for a (now) obscure underrated game that does something very unique and very simply which I have a lot of nostalgia for.

Obsession would definitely be on my list if I had to pick 15 games to move across the pond. Need to play Encyclopedia more and still want to play it with other people, so far I've only played it solo. Of course, Anno 1800 is in my collection because of you. Enjoyed the campaign solo game so far but another one I cannot get others to play. Made some mistakes in my one play of Boonlake before a sudden influx of new games so I need to get it back to the table. Must be worthwhile if you made it one of your 15. Really appreciate your insight on these games. Watched the last video on your top games of 2023 with my youngest daughter and she has been talking about playing board games again since. Both girls stopped playing a lot of board games with me once they got to high school age and I think seeing someone like you excited about games reminds them of why they used to love playing. @@GnarlyCarleyGaming to be honest, I don't know that there are many games that I would have to take with me on a big move like that because many of them are readily available elsewhere. I would probably keep Eminent Domain, as TMG is out of business and one of the cards in the Exotica expansion is actually named after my daughters. Definitely my 1960s edition of Acquire, my favorite game of all time. From there it would be a matter of figuring out what Kickstarter exclusive content I cannot get at the other side of the move.
As to my girls, I definitely understand the shift from gaming. The last few years have had some major changes, including moving across country three weeks before COVID lockdowns started and now dealing with the monster that is high school. Super proud of each of them, even if they are growing up way too fast. Each has a different preference in board games so that hinders whole family game nights. Of course, as Downton Abbey fans, and regency era as a whole, Obsession is one we can always agree on. I try hard not to make them feel guilty or pressured to play board games and we've done a good job of finding other activities to do together.

Some good inspiration for more games to try. We definitely more like minded boardgamers like yourself and my friend down south. He always recommends some good co-op/2 player games.
Looking forward to checking out Revive, Bitoku, Kanban EV. Looking on BGG they are high on the complexity which helps having said kind of people who enjoy those type of games too.

What an incredible weekend lineup ahead!
Certainly, the more you play, the better you get at learning games. I wouldn't say that always makes it easy to remember games. But I tend to be the rulebook reader myself which helps. Learning a game to teach it helps codify it in my brain. And I also try to play more than once in a short space of time. This helps things really sink in for me. I think I naturally have a pretty good memory too. Typically, setup and maybe 1 or 2 quick checks for clarity, and im good to go on any big game Ive played before.

And when I look at them again it just shows how much boardgames have developed during the years, not all of them hold up to the current standard.

    • @GnarlyCarleyGaming
      @GnarlyCarleyGaming 2 месяца назад

Some don't hold standard....sometimes our standards change too! What excites us changes. Games are puzzles and we all find styles that suit us and maybe they change as we game more too. Doesn't always make for a bad game. It just means it is okay for us to let it go.

It is so great to find you on RUclips, I didn’t realize you had your own channel and missed you after going back to watch some Patreon on NRB. will be watching some of your videos. Great video though, I sold off a lot of mine and my kids games that we no longer play in order to buy things that they want now. Sad to lose some of those games for the memories, but we have kept the ones we will still play.

I've only been in the hobby around 8 years, and had probably less than 40 games til around 2019 so most of that collection was VERY new. I did leave some games with my mom. I sold/gave some to friends and was happier that they'd be loved on by close people (especially games I painted). But not many old, old titles really at all. Still relatively a baby gamer.

The move was triggered by both a long desire for new adventure and specifically following my heart in choosing with who I wanted to live with. Logistics were both very simple and A LOT. Moving is always a lot. But I found coordinating a big move with loads of things locally last year far more stressful than abandoning most of what I owned and hitting reset. There's an ease in owning and transporting very few things. Though I only had about 3 weeks to pull off the move which made it hectic, overall it was a breeze. I can stay with a work visa thankfully into the future, so long as I remain employed:)

Hello Carley! Well, I don't know why your video appeared on my list, but I was really happy it did. I also looked and commented on your Frosthaven review.
First, thanks for sharing, it was really interesting to hear what you had to say.
And to share a similar situation, although, at a much smaller scale. When the famous "pandemic" hit, we were confined many months, and since I don't play solo, and very little at 2 players, 2 years ago, January 2022, my play time lowered a lot. Not being able to play, I used the social media a bit more, discovering new RUclips channel and ordering more games "for later".
January 2022, I was up to 260 different games, plus about double that in expansions (that's another discussion we could have). And I felt it was time to lower the count.
So, I asked my 8 closest friends to share their game list with me and was ready to sell every game that was in more than 3 collections. And to my grand surprise, it totaled only 30 games. Well, it was actually 33, but 3 of them where some of my most played game, so I decided to keep them.
I realize that I was into hype so much, and there was many popular games I never acquired, because my friend had them. I sold all 30 of them, but since then, i bought and traded for many more and I'm back at 270... my most common acquisitions are Dungeon crawl and KS/Gamefound projects. DC because I only had Gloomhaven and fell in love with it, and KS/GF, because I wasn't doing that before and with working from home, additional income was now available.
So, I'm able to control the growth, but will eventually go down under 200. if I can play more of my games. And finishing campaign games, so I can sell them.
I keep game until I don't feel like playing them anymore, but I find it easier to trade, than sell. I own 272 different games, but I traded 249, so my collection is moving a lot. It's just that i used to be the main purveyor of games, and now I'm one of many. But it was nice to hear the story of someone who had to go through something similar, although more drastic.
Sorry for the rambling, but very happy to have discovered your channel.

As someone who has moved over sees with games. I found packing 4 games in a box vertically, wrapping them with saran, then bubble wrapping them worked well. I used mostly medium boxes.
For many of the big games I would even bubble wrap them first. The key was not putting weight on them. Shipping hundreds of games that way is difficult, especially when so many are big boxes(and require almost a medium box by themselves). But this is the best way to ensure your boxes stay intact.
Glad they made it there safely. Enjoy England.

I think it comes down to personal taste. And I genuinely like having different flavours of similar puzzles to explore. Not everything needs to be perfectly novel to be enjoyable. But do I need to own every tile placement game? Absolutely not. I'll find ones I like the most (maybe a few) and hold onto those. I also find these days with lighter games, I just like rotating them in and out of the collection every so often. There's big puzzles I always want but new light takes on similar things is good for my brain. To each their own:) I love exploring it all though

This is an interesting topic. I was once done with board games and when I wanted to buy a really good full-frame camera as a university student, I sold almost all my games (luckily I kept Battlestar Galactica) and used that money to buy a great camera I've used so so much. And that started me on a journey of minimalism where I began to sell over half of my belongings and it felt so good. When I re-entered the hobby in 2021 I wanted to make sure that my collection never got out of hand. I don't buy that many games, I continuously sell games I'm not that fond of, that includes good games but with limited time I'd rather player really good games in that time and by doing so I've never passed the 100 games mark.
This year I have a little falling out with board games, not as excited to play them anymore and since some friends and I started playing Blood on the Clocktower every weekend since December, I've lost interest in many other games so I've already sold some this year and haven't made a single board game purchase this year yet and it feels great, I don't miss anything. I'm constantly playing games but I already own them and playing games is what this hobby is about to me, not collecting, hoarding or amassing games for the sake of it.
So thanks for this voice of reasoning in a hobby full of hoarders (no offense, it's tongue in cheek) that sometimes alienates me as someone who's trying to keep his belongings in check. Moving continents is a big step, so congrats to that, I admire the courage. When I reentered the hobby I also thought "these masses of games are keeping me from just moving abroad or wherever, I hate it".
On Mars is probably the only Lacerda I'll ever need, I've sold my copy of Weather Machine this week and I might sell my copy of Lisboa as well. I really love On Mars though.
Good video, thanks for making it. All the best to you in the UK.
