I think that when it comes to the issue of the tie and pocket square, we have to exercise caution that we not be dogmatic in any regard. My personal belief about it is that it is perfectly all right to match them perfectly. I see it and I think of a person who is highly logical. And for the person who prefers to coordinate the tie and pocket square between a solid and a pattern, I think of somebody who is more intuitive. So it's perfectly all right to coordinate a solid and a pattern.
William your explanation ( as usual ) is insightful and empathetic. I have the greatest admiration and respect for the manner in which you expound upon the issue of the hour. 😊☺️😃
This is the best explanation I have ever heard for this rule, and I think it holds up. It’s the same logic I have with shoes, actually: technically, there’s nothing wrong with only owning one of an item (whether it be shoes, suits, a particular accessory), but you should never look like you only own one. So thanks for the concise explanation, Antonio!
When I see matching ties and pocket squares, I don't think of lack of options. If I was to do so, I'd think of it not as me not having options, but of me having the option to do what I want to do. I don't like having so many colours in an outfit. I like to keep things simple. Hence why I'd probably match neckties and pocket squares.
2:49 I got excited to see this necktie. My father always used this ones. They were plain colors, but the fabric and width really stood out. Now I'm rocking that style thanks to him.
Good, concise video. I don’t wear a suit often, but I like to look nice for special work events, parties, father/daughter dances, etc. and this is helpful to continuing my style journey.
This is such an important issue...I had NO IDEA that by exactly matching my pocket square with my neck tie would tell the world at large that I have NO INDIVIDUALITY...that I am dull, boring, and without an opinion of my own...whew!...thank gaaaawd I found your video so that now know how to express myself otherwise.
I don't get why it is wrong to match the tie and pocket square. Doesn't seem like a big deal at all. Fashion is a matter of personal taste, what works for you may not work for everyone.
As an artist, style is and have always been about others opinions. The ones that are widely accepted are the ones that shared the same opinion oftentimes because of “who” said so or “who is wearing it. We match our leathers because to most it makes since. We match our ties because to most it makes since. I choose to wear a matching tie with matching pocket square or pattern with solid or vice versa. To me it comes down to who’s opinion that really matters…….mine lol
Okay, I had to chuckle. Wearing a matching tie and square means ''you have no options'' but wearing a plain white square means you are ''creative''! lol That said, I am not a fan of matchy-matchy but I certainly don't ''judge'' those who are...
White pocket square is a must as it can be combined with infinite color contrasts.. A no brainer..There is no need to even point this out. You should come up with a stronger argument.
@@devilsKrEEd My point was that white is not a creative color. That, my friend, is the no-brainer here. I did not say that white is inappropriate and I happen to like white squares. You should have paid closer attention to my words.
I am a die hard believer that what your body looks like tells me what you think about yourself and the world- Now with your input i am of the thought that what you wear and how you wear it presents the same thing. Thank you sir
I've been upping my pocket square game - I've got a small collection of Seaward and Stearns pocket squares, and they don't 'match' any tie ever made. They are really fun and nice.
*I 100% agree, Never ever buy matching tie (neck/bow) and pocket square sets.* It makes a man look like he's going to his high school prom! As you said, it looks like that it all he's got or has no idea how to dress himself! There are many web site (bargain prices) sure not the best quality _(polyester)_ pocket square, even white or paisley. I would by three pocket squares, 1. white, all purpose, 2. paisley, blue back ground, 3. paisley, red background! These have covered all my pocket square needs! As I have blue, red, grey, black and a white neck ties! As for Bow ties, I only use a white pocket square!
Options are wonderful, two different colours can definitely match each other, and I compliment anyone with a tie and a handkerchief to begin with. But I really don't care about silly no-nos, and I always wear matching tie and handkerchief, because I feel it looks much more stylish, clean and simply better. I really don't like this colour palette, some people wear for a suit, such as striped socks, orange trousers, navy jacket, red tie and polka dotted handkerchief. No thanks. In fact, I don't care what "one does", since "one" wears jeans with a jacket nowadays and "one" wears white sneakers with a suit! 🤮 If that is fashion, I'll stay old school and completely off beat, thank you. 😁 ANyway, nice video, bud. It's presented in a very nice and non-arrogant way.
Sometimes, I think, you can match one color of pocket square and tie, but only if they are NOT SOLID! For example, Antonio's tie in red-blue combination. U can use red or blue with another color. It can play in contrast. But if you have a good solid tie - use pocket with some colors, or if it is formal meeting white president's variant. Antonio, I think, that rule with tie and pocket square is actual and it shows your good attention to others on the meeting.
To be honest I make myself all of my pocket sqare, ties and bow ties and I love to make in the same fabric. If you see a low quality, shiny and boring tie or a pretied bow tie, you can imagine that the person in front of you don't know what's he's doing. But it's not always true
Matched tie and pocket square is always a smart look. Mixing up the pocket square is also fine, it should compliment your complete look and not be your whole look. Ive seen more men get this wrong than right. When in doubt keep it simple. The term best used here is " SPREZZATURA " loose translation - effortless style.
For example: i went to a ball the other day, so i matched tie and pocketsquare, because simple was better. When i go out for dinner ill wear seperate colours/patterns because it pops more and leverages the look.
I'm definitely too critical of a matching tie and pocket square. To me it seems like going for the most obvious thing that someone inexperienced goes for, thinking it's what people who dress well do. As a result I feel it can look pretty cheesy, unless you have that colour added somewhere else in the outfit as a theme you've thought about, or if it compliments the colour of the jacket really well
Honestly, as long as you have a decent sense of fashion and color complimenting, it really doesn't matter whether the square matches your tie or not. Opinions are subjective and I wear suits bc I like to, not bc I'm worried about what other people think while I'm wearing it. Match them don't, either way, it's not gonna make THAT MUCH of an opinion change and if it does, you didn't need to be around them anyway.
The way I was raised, If the tie is a solid color, try to match it, if you cant match the square ti the tie, then match it to the shirt color. If the Tie is stripped, match the prominent color on the tie to the square. Most times I have ties that come as a set that have exact matching pocket squares and thats fine too.
I think you're an absolute genius and I am happy to be returning to your channel. I matched pocket square w/ tie and I am definitely gonna try to get them to compliment each other. As an engineering student, your advice is definitely gonna help me leave a lasting impression!
Great timing! I was at formal wear hire shop for sizing/fitting as one of the best men for my good friend's wedding. He was not there but he had already selected the entire outfit. To my surprise, the pocket square patterned exactly like the tie. I will have to discuss this with him OR... be a maverick and wear my own pocket square on his day ;).
While I agree, this is not the best look, and some thought has already gone into this. It is my humble opinion that this is not the day to be a "maverick", this is the day you put on Mickey Mouse ears and clown shoes if asked, because he is your friend, and this is his day.
You have a great time analyzing or comparing the styles of Ghost from Power and Tommy from Peaky Blinders. Similar characters to ones you've done before like mad men and suits the show, may even bring you more views from their audiences they have a huge following!
I pick up lots of matching sets but end up just wearing whatever, even if i still keep it the same. Gotta remember you will always look good and better than most (if you care about that)
Hi Antonio, Love the channel. This is one thing that I have always been wary of. Who ever came up with this rule?. I make all of my own Bow Ties and Pocket Squares. I use a lot of Liberty of London Fabrics, and also make a lot using recycled Vintage Kimono silk, so go to a lot of effort to choose the fabrics carefully. Last year I flew to Paris and attended 2 fashion shows as part of fashion week and wore my own ties and Pocket Squares. I was so tempted to wear a matching set that I had made, but at the last minute did not due to this rule. I was worried that if anyone had this rule in the back of their minds they may think that I had no idea what I was doing. Some rules can be a bit intimidating and can take the fun out of being yourself. Don
Hell, man, match your hat band with both of em if you want lol. Personally, I think the main thing not matching them exactly is that it shows you didn't buy them as a set, and you picked your own combo.
Thank you for puttin this out here, Ive finally bought my first suit in 11 years- It is a dark blue & the vest with white pinstripe a nice white collard shirt its a little too dark after wearing it tonight people think its black the pinstripe is a little muted but i like it - They had a bright blue with grey pinstripe but i think it was too much- I have been a fan of the 20's & 30's suits for a long time, Its a "wesley clothes suit is that a good brand? Thanks again you have taught me a lot over the last few days
I don't match my pocket square and tie but I often find they clash and don't feel happy about them. It is quite annoying if you have spent a lot on a suit, shirt, tie, pocket-square individually but you put them together and fell a little like magician or party clown. I now only tend to just wear white or a very light blue one. Anything with too much colour just makes me feel like I'm trying too hard.
Well, today, I see one guy rocking a pocket square for every thousand that does not. And one guy in a suit for every ten thousand that doesn't, so I don't even have an opinion about matching ties and pocket squares: I know I don't, for a start, but I also understand down here it's really tough to even find somewhere that sells pocket squares. I agree that not matching them actually shows the guy understands what he's doing with his appearance :)
It depends on the day. I try not to totally match my square to my tie. However if I do, chances are my shirt has a more noticeable pattern. I'll match the square to the tie there so it doesn't look too busy having a patterned square and patterned shirt. However, if the pocket square and the shirt have similar patterns, I'll sooner match or correlate my square to my shirt than to my tie, but I'm still not above matching them some days. I say embrace the non-matching and complementary combinations, but don't let that keep you from matching them if that's what feels good while you're suiting up. Trust your gut.
Hi, Antonio. I'm going to respectfully disagree with your reasoning. When I see the pocket square and tie not matching, I think, "Oh, he couldn't be bothered to actually make the two items actually match. He threw together whatever was handy (or clean)." Matching the two items, to my brain, shows you care enough to pay attention to both items of clothing. When the two do not match, they look disjointed. I will agree that this is not a big deal overall. In my brain, I can see the person cares enough to put a suit on, but after that, I want to know what the person has to say or what they bring to the discussion.
Thanks Antonio for bringing this up once more. The matching tie and pocket square seems to have spread like a pandemic as people often do what the crowd is doing without researching style. Not a big deal to me but acts like a filter to set apart someone who is into style as opposed to someone who probably doesn’t care.
I disagree. Its not about not having options. Its often about theme and matching colors. Some of the examples you show here are clashing colors to me. If colors are clashing it doesnt look good.
Interesting. I never put that much thought into it. I usually don't wear any kind of formal attire, let alone suits so I'm completely oblivious to any finer points of style. But I'm going to a halloween party as Kingpin later in the month, so I figured I've some required reading, so to speak. Glad to have learned something for future reference.
Guys, (you too, Tone) learn the word "handkerchief" and your pocket square options immediately double. If the quality and size are similar enough, go for it.
Wednesday June 14 2023. Father's day is coming and though my daughter wants nothing to do me I still thought about wearing a coursage or boutonnare in her memory what color should it be or should i not bother?

I had to make a conscious effort to get neckties that were much more fun colors. I looked far too conservative for myself before. A pocket square, that might not necessarily match whatever else I'm wearing, is an extra dimension that's perfect for a king shit stud dork daddy like me !
What I do is have the inverted version of the tie for a pocket square. I have a black tie with white diamonds so I had a pocket square custom made that is white with the same diamond shapes but in black.
While I understand the theory of choice I respectfully disagree. I wear a uniform for work and prefer the matching look of pocket square and tie. I feel this "no matching" policy is akin to the old 80s great guys wear to earrings, or the earring on the right means your great nonsense. Fashion and Style are and will always be based on what you feel comfortable with. Do what you want, feel good about yourself and don't get bogged down with the noise.
I don't know if a pocket square ever make or beak the deal... if your worried about the pocket square, you got your head in the wrong part of the game. Go with whatever gives you more confidence!
It's more a secret code than a style rule, so they can recognize themselves as members. The rule of matching things is the same as with suits heavy patterns don't go with suit, only with blazers with complimenting pants (except Gucci of course and only if you are very young and sing rap). So no polka dots for example.
So my question, with the caveat that the last suit I wore was my alphas almost 20 years ago and have no intention of wearing another, what are your thoughts on miniature medals?
I use just a white pocket square in presidential fold. However, I prefer to wear my neckties short. See the old pictures of the Laurel and Hardy to see what I mean. I personally like that style and it's long enough from my blazer to cover the tie end. When I take my blazer off. I think it looks stylish. If others don't see that way it's my style.
@Selim Sultan Akbar Usually where the tip is at my belly button. The 2 knots I use are Oriental and Pratt, I need a custom shirt to wear a full Winsor.

I think it looks much better matched.
Totally agree
Very nice absolutely agree!
Ohhh, when I saw the title I thought why, now I know!
Guys, (you too, Tone) learn the word "handkerchief" and your pocket square options immediately double. If the quality and size are similar enough, go for it.
Complement - not match is the thing.
Think a bit broader than just complement the tie, trie to bring it all togheter jacket, shirt, shoes etc
Hey Antonio I just love u r videos hoping to achieve 5 million by end of the year
A fan from India 🇮🇳

Looking forward to that too!
This is really amazing 😇
What if you like matching or color coordinating?
Wednesday June 14 2023. Father's day is coming and though my daughter wants nothing to do me I still thought about wearing a coursage or boutonnare in her memory what color should it be or should i not bother?
I had to make a conscious effort to get neckties that were much more fun colors. I looked far too conservative for myself before. A pocket square, that might not necessarily match whatever else I'm wearing, is an extra dimension that's perfect for a king shit stud dork daddy like me !
It’s OK if they match. The world has bigger problems.
Waaay better matching
Useful!!!
Well explained 👌🏻
Dislikers of this videos are the embodiment of clichés
I don't know if a pocket square ever make or beak the deal... if your worried about the pocket square, you got your head in the wrong part of the game. Go with whatever gives you more confidence!
Love solid navy with orange pattern.
I compare matching sets to clip-on ties.
Hey, Antonio. My kid got me a four sided pocket square from Dillards or somewhere. Has 4 different patterns. How do you work with these?
Did you ever figure it out? I also have one of these
What about no neck tie for a wedding? How can I provide some spunk with the pocket square? Specifically a light brown jacket with a purple shirt?
Totally agree. If you are going to wear the combo, why not do it in the most stylish way possible?
Yes‼️ that's exactly what I think when I see them matching. The store dressed you like you're a child. 🤔
And you're weirdly controlling.
I hear what you're saying.
Bit why do companies sell matching ties and squares? That's telling me they're supposed to match
RMRS: Your Tie Should NEVER Match Your Pocket Square
Also RMRS: Has matching tie and pocket square in the intro of basically every video
I like to mix mine..but on wearing my Regimental Tie, I wear the same pocket square to go with it...together with Regimental Socks etc
