Real Men Real Style What "message" does a bow tie send?
My son is graduating tonight and under his cap and gown they have a strict dress code but are allowed to wear any dark tie. So, we chose a black bow tie with shiny silver specks so it will probably glisten a bit under the stage lights. We also added black suspenders, black vest & his pocket watch to the standard black pants, socks, shoes & long sleeved, white collard dress shirt.
Now, if the coordinator doesn't appreciate his unique look, I'm bringing his black leather belt that matches his shoes and a standard black neck tie.

I am 52 and thought I knew pretty much verything about suits and ties. The 3" rule as related to the tie width and lapel width is an excellent rule of thumb. Thanks for your effort.

I think the general rule is to pay attention to contrast. A contrast can be a lot, like a color, a pattern, structure, brightness/lightness and so on. The contrasts you are using should be a medium and a small one. Mixing them both will make an great impression.
If you really want to look serious, stick to one medium contrast. To little contrast will make you look shy, while to much will make you aggressive (We learned that from one of your videos.). Two contrasts will look more playful than one, three are very borderline and four different contrasts will send you directly into a clown university.
That's by the way true for everything you will design, contrast is king.

Hi Antonio - One of your articles on ties says "As a rule, a tie, when tied, should just cover a buckle on your belt." Doesnt that seem a bit low? I usually aim for the tip of the tie to be just above the belt buckle, and I've seen it worn higher. What looks sharpest?
I prefer to see the tip of the tie to reach mid way on belt. Not above it or below it.

Hey I want an opinon. I have a midnight blue blazer that I love, it fits great. I usually wear a bright bold red shirt under it and a blue/red paisly tie (the red matches the red on the shirt perfectly and the blue matches the blazer perfectly) I wear a gambler block stetson and a brown rodeo belt and brass buckle. usually wear black jeans and black boots. I am looking at a pair of white jeans and a pair of brown boots to match the belt. What do you guys think?

I'm digging that color combination of purple and olive! Looks fantastic! I wish I could wear an olive jacket, but it doesn't work with my complexion. I love to wear purple (my favorite color) with my charcoal grey jacket though. It's my favorite combination. I just wish I could find more purple shirts.

I have 1 question about pocket squares, how do get them to stay on?
i match based on soft suit/soft tie and bold suit/bold tie. Some patterns are more subdued than others so it's important to not have a tie that pops out too aggressively against a more subtle suit
Does the royal purple tie usually go with your olive suit?

Its not a suit, its a sports jacket and pretty informal which he knows. I'd rather wear that than faded baggy jeans and a jersey.

Just don't go too dark with the navy blue. It should be clearly blue and not "off-black", if that makes sense. Avoid the uncanny valley. ;)

Ok, so I have these pair of brogues 3989 bex black and white. A typical fit black suit and a premium celadon green. I love detail so any tips on a tie color or even a pocket square my can and gown is black and orange.

So if I understand...... All my work suits are grey, charcoal or navy. Most have a very subtle pin stripe, although a couple have a chalk stripe. I almost always way plain white shirts. From what you have said I can basically wear any tie of classic sized tie?
