    This is it! I've been hitting countless buckets of golfballs at the range fighting a slice for basically forever. I've watched a million videos telling me to get the club in the slot to stop winging outside in and this finally made it make sense as to where the heck I was supposed to have the golf club and how my body was supposed to move to get it there. I went to the range with this in mind, did the baseball swing and I was absolutely hammering my driver and my misses were hooks! HOOKS!? I am so freaking amped right now. Thank you.

    I know you've heard this kind of comment before, but-- this thought of getting the shaft parallel to my right forearm-- has been a complete game-changer for me. I'm now crushing all my clubs, getting compression and distance. Today I hit one drive 252 and hit 3W 272! Seriously, 272 with 3W! (with the wind.) I still pull shots a little, but not much. I have great confidence in my ball striking now. I'm 69 yrs old. Thanks, Clay!

    Clay, you’re tops thx! This is quite possibly the best golf instructional video I’ve ever seen (no youngster either). My problems were exactly what u were saying. In fact, I took a lesson and the pro told me to have a higher backswing?? Naturally frustrated cuz I was worse off, I saw ur video. Nine minutes later after watching and a large bucket, I started with half swings like u said. Went well and let me say. Yesterday, I was all over the range. With ur help, today I’m sure I hit at least 80% straight and where I was aiming!! What a difference a day makes. Thank you sooo much!

    Dear Clay. Thank you for very insightfull videos. A lot of people is looking for that aha moment in the golf swing. Analysing so many swings and putting together the best of each coach have l found that that one movement being that it feels like the right shoulder moves down when the golf swing starts down actually causes flatting the club shaft, pulling the right elbow into the side, pushing the hips forward creating lag and set the golf club onto the correct path and into the contact position. Yes al of this still needs to be in sequense but have found that if the right shoulder moves down rather than down and forward that it places the body in a far better position to hit a good solid straight shot with better distance results. My 2 cents.

    Best explanation where the shaft needs to be on the downswing and why. Period. Best drill to "feel" the difference between steep and shallow. Period. This is a game changer, but will take (me at least) a lot of work to rewire movement patterns. On my first trip to the range, I had several of Clay's "feels amazing" moments. Those good shots felt different than any of the 10 millions balls I've hit in my life.
    Any suggestions on how to go about making this stick? For now, I guess I'm going to do the drill several times a day and hit balls about half speed until it feels natural.
    Thanks Clay.

    Hogan used the same supination + flexion of lead wrist in his swing and when working through his Five Lessons book and trying to understand WHY it worked for him I realized the conscious action of supination (palm up) + flexion (slap inward) of the lead left hand caused the fully extended (slapped back) and fully radial-deviated (thumb up) trailing right wrist to straighten (neutral supination / flexion) and “snap” down very quickly into ulnar-deviation (thumb down movement) identical to Hogan’s waggle action before making the swing.
    In terms of cause and effect the left hand flexion and supination maintains the desired forward lean of the shaft lag, but completely releases the radial-to-ulnar deviation lag with the same wrist action seen in things like hammering nail, chopping wood with an axe or cracking a whip. The latter analogy is the most telling because the “crack” the tip of a whip makes it a mini-sonic boom as it breaks the 700 mph sound barrier. The club head snapping down with that same flick of the wrist downward accelerates it the same way during the last few inches of the swing before impact if timed as Hogan and the pros, or after after impact in the swing of most recreational golfers which is why their swings lack the compressive force of the pros.
    I stopped using the supination+flexion bowed lead wrist technique after hitting a tree root and badly spraining the top of my left wrist. That make me realize why Hogan’s swing was so consistent and powerful. The combination of supination+flexion+full unlar deviation by the time the ball releases off the face allows very consistent and precise control of face angle because there is no “give” in the wrists (hence the bad sprain when the root stopped it). But what I discovered after reverting back to a flat wrist at impact is that time the same radial-to-ulnar deflection change in the last foot of club head travel before and through impact which causes the club head to accelerate and the face to swing closed.
    In terms of cause and effect and timing starting the change from radial-to-ulnar deviation in the right hand just as the hands swing down into the sight picture starts to move the thumb down without changing the orientation of the flat left wrist or the extension of right wrist, but it changes the angle of the shaft (i.e. the lag) significantly and significantly changes the the face angle. The key factor here is having “soft hands” and allowing the club force to pull the right wrist from extension to neutral and both wrists from radial deviation to full ulnar deviation (Hogan’s hidden in plain sight trick). It is the radial-to-ulnar deviation of the wrists combined with the rotation of the entire left arm at the shoulder joint (which maintains wrist orientation) which swings the face from open-to-square WHILE THE BALL IS COMPRESSING ON THE FACE. The club head continues to accelerate during the compression-release process resulting in exponentially more F = 1/2 (Mass * Velocity^2) striking force. I’m not sure how much that last “crack the whip” radial-ulnar deviation wrist action increased club head velocity versus a swing without it but if it were to increase from 80 to 100 mph the difference in force would be F= 1/2 (M x 10,000) compared to F = 1/2 (M x 6,400). Since club head mass is constant in those equations the result is 5000 vs 3200, a 1.56x increase in the force at impact compressing the ball, just from snap of the wrists down fully through impact. To make the ball release of the face straight at the target the face must be open at impact and the club face must contact the ball inside of center > +. The ball rotates with the face as it whips closed \ and is square to target - when if flies off the face.
    Since swing arc affects overall club head velocity at impact the ball will compress less with partial swings so the amount the club face is opened behind the ball needs to be adjusted. If the ball flies off straight right the radial-ulnar deviation wasn’t completed before the ball released off the face. When the ball misses straight left or hooks the cause is the ball staying on the face past the point it has squared. The cure for that is to aim more inside on the ball (not open the face). Aiming more inside will increase the dwell angle time of the compression-release action. Opening the face instead would create slice spin on the ball. That cause and effect is very counter intuitive but a lot of things in physics are.

    The release you explained is a specific feel for your game. I don’t see pros release the club with that closed of a face after impact - seems to me pros are working on less release with proper wrists conditions in today’s game. Great explanation on getting club into slot - loved the baseball explanation

    • @wescharlton
      @wescharlton 3 года назад +1

      Seems like there’s a couple schools of thought, between square release, like Jordan Spieth, or more of a roll release, which is what Clay is talking about and can be seen in classic Tiger’s swing. Would agree there’s a trend to minimize face rotation, but giving up potential in club speed. As long as the hands are leading at impact, it minimizes excessive face rotation. If the club head catches up to the hands before impact, that’s where we get into the inconsistent strikes

      Joshua, the pros absolutely release the club. Often what you see in slo mo swings are impact and JUST POST IMPACT, where the club seems 'stable' , but that is misleading as you are watching only a fraction of the swing, and in slow motion. Continue watching the release of the club post impact and you'll notice most players release as explained in the video.

    I would argue for amateurs, late rolling of the wrist is not the best option. When Pro swings are analyzed on the GEARS system, the biggest difference between Pro & AMs, is how quickly, from the very Top of the Backswing, that Pros put Squaring / Twisting Torque on the Handle and Square the Face almost immediately, compared to AMs that never even get it square at all. The Tennis Drill, done immediately at the top, to get the club squared early, then allows all the other sources of power (handle forward, etc) to be accessed. Square Early -> Rotate Hard

    That golf ball sound at the beginning scared the shit outta me. Mr Clay, question. I understand what you have to do to square the clubface through impact..what are your thoughts on rate of closure then? It seems that having to rotate your hands so much through impact would cause your rate of closure to be pretty high which, for us amateur golfers creates a very difficult swing/shot to reproduce over and over again.

    I feel like your explanation of turning that clubface is natural bc I’m a hockey player; but so many instructors seem to say NOT to let the scoring lines turn over through and past impact; I’m much more inclined to naturally do what you are advocating for here and isn’t the turning the face over like that a power producer? I’m wondering if you can comment here or in future videos about: difference many instruction advocates for keeping the face in line with the spine angle through and past impact vs. what you are showing here where you are saying turn that face over all the way and don’t hold it off.

    The only reason we can't swing on one plane is the the right elbow. When it bends the hands get lifted by the length of the right forearm but the elbow stays on the swing plane. The club must come back to rejoin this elbow plane prior to impact.

    Can someone answer a question. How long did it take for you to make contact with irons most often? I’ve been playing 8 months so I realize I’m a beginner but I’ve played nearly everyday non stop and still only contact 1 out of 5 irons. The other 4 roll across the ground about 50 yards. It’s worse off a tee than the ground. I don’t want to give up but months of work with no progress is frustrating. Even my best shots I’ve ever hit are 40 percent shorter and 75 percent lower than everyone I play with

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад +2

      I can only answer for myself, but I started out playing as a kid with my grandma. It took me years to create any consistency with striking the ball. I'm still working on this decades later (there have been a lot of years in between where I rarely played). Keep at it and keep track of what's going on. Record your swings and see if you can figure out ways to make it better by comparing it to others. Create games and try to make them harder each time you practice and don't give up. Best of luck! i have the same problem with instruction videos. I may be doing each of these things, but not consciously, so the question is more why is this happening. Not sure changing a non-conscious action with a conscious one is really an answer - much better to understand why (balance, gravity, weight of the club head etc.). That way the change would have more chance to hold up under pressure too. Best video I have found so far though!

      Check out his videos on ‘the move’. There’s a few feels he discusses, such as feeling trail elbow tuck in, lead hand toward the sky, or trail hand turning a doorknob. There’s also a check if you draw a line from the ball through the trail elbow at address from the DTL view, keep the shaft and club head under it, from trail arm parallel in the downswing to impact

  • @Egonomical

    Why not swing it back on a shallow path the same as the one coming back into the ball? Why swing it high backswing then flatten out, why not just swing flat back and down?

  • @johnbak9395
    @johnbak9395 3 года назад +1

    Would this require a great deal of timing?

    • @wescharlton
      @wescharlton 3 года назад +1

      Far less timing involved than when trying square the club when “flipping”. He has a video on this very topic, think it’s referred as ‘zone of pure contact’. Having the hands in front of the club head at impact allows for a ball first strike on a descending blow with irons/hybrids. Even if we’re not synced up just perfectly, with that descending strike and taking a divot after the ball, it gives a better chance of more solid contact in the intended direction. Key is keeping your rotation with your body going, at least as I understand it

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад +1

      When done properly, this takes a lot of timing out of the swing. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor

    How you shallow it out from the top
    is a complete mystery to me and is as unnatural as hell. Instead I just try and swing my entire backswing and down as close to the right elbow setup plane as possible so there is a minimal need to inject an unnatural shallowing move into my downswing. Works great and stops an over the top outside in downswing line.
