    • @immortallix
      @immortallix 11 месяцев назад +2

      Are you kidding me? Samus Returns was very mediocre by Metroid standards, not to mention all the Metroid-likes that popped up in its absence. It wasn't even as good as AM2R. Their level design was even poorer in Dread since they didn't have an existing one they had to adhere to. The only thing they improved was the action elements of Metroid, and that's only if you're preferential to Metroid being an action platformer more than anything else. The art direction in both games pale to the 2D ones, and both of em hardly have any memorable music.

      @lordofdoosh Nobody expected it to be as good as AM2R. That was a 10-year project made by some incredibly passionate fans. Money was not the incentive, but love and art for its own sake. Nothing can compare to that. If Samus Returns tried to copy AM2R, it would just be worse by default. Going in a different, more action-focused route was the right call because it made the game stand out more. And for what it's worth, the atmosphere and exploration in Samus Returns was still great, even if the level design could use some work. I think Dread actually improved on basically everything except music. The combat was faster and crunchier, the visuals are obviously better (no match for 2D sprites, but about as good as you could get with the 2.5D approach), and the level design feels more meticulously planned to accommodate both 100% runs and speedruns. Not perfect, but about as perfect as it could reasonably be without just copying Super Metroid.

    Ever Oasis was rotting on a nearby used game store's shelf for several months and every time I went there I considered picking it up purely because the art on the cover is gorgeous, I finally bit the bullet and bought it without knowing anything about the game eventually and it is really good, I was so happy to see there were Ever Oasis spirits in Smash Ultimate because it's so rare to see the game even acknowledged by people
    Also I remember being so pissed off when everyone wanted the 3DS to perish when the Switch launched because I simply didn't have 300 bucks to blow on a new console and so I was very happy to get more 3DS content. So there was an install base on the 3DS: poor kids! I get the frustration tho.

    I don’t think they thought Bowser’s inside story was going to save their company. I think they knew the writing was on the wall, figured out what they had for a budget and picked something within that scope just so that all the employees who worked for that devoloper had the opportunity to continue to make money while looking for other jobs and such. It was probably a great thing for a lot of low level employees.

      Pulling life support?
      Dude, I play on my 3DS so much I had to replace the battery because it was dying earlier than intended. I'm still playing my 3DS. Considering getting a battery replacement for my 2DS as well.
      I'll admit that once the Bank support goes down, I'll play it *less* since a lot of my playtime is Pokemon and if I can't migrate anything forward I'll mostly be messing around with randomizers and just having fun with the games in a more basic and limited capacity, but even then I've got a ton of games on the system I still enjoy playing, not least of which is Dragon Ball Fusions. As well as all of the DS (and GBA games I can play on it since it's softmodded).
      I don't hate the Switch Pokemon games, I thought Scarlet/Violet were pretty good, but I wouldn't even have to think about it if you asked me if I'd sacrifice all of the Switch era Pokemon games for the pre-Switch Pokemon games. Yes, a hundred times yes. They are all infinitely better.

    34:36 I was *the* yo-kai watch person back when the anime was still airing in English. I owned the toy watches, the card game, always asked for medals, owned Yo-Kai Watch 2 Bony Spirits (never really played it), had the medallions, watched the show, had the Yo-kai version of the game of life, believed yo-kai were real, etc. I was the biggest yo-kai person you'd ever see. Shame Ultra Sun and Moon sucked and it's arguably the worst third version in pokemon history. Didn't fixed any of the major pacing issues, the sheer amount of handholding (21 years into the franchise and you make a game this handholdy, specially after how handholdy the previous version was) and in fact it made the story worse by making Lusamine worse (it even removed that weird Nihilego fusion). Rainbow Rocket was just lame, a great concept completely squandered of its potential by being like an hour long and you don't even get to visit any of the worlds where the evil teams won so that you can see how it is there.

    I really like Nintendo releasing more games for the 3DS for a while longer even after the Switch launch more or less like Sony did with the PS4 after the PS5.
    I didn't have the money to buy a Switch, so my 3DS was my main Nintendo platform at the time and the main medium I had to play the new games, so I'm very grateful that some new games were released for it even if they didn't sell so good.

I then proceeded to have one of the most engrossing and astonishingly loaded gaming experiences ever. Yo Kai Watch 3 is a game I swear by and it is a true travesty that no one played it. I'll gladly be "that guy" in the comments coming to defend Yokai Watch. And Antdude will be surprised to know I was not 7 when playing.
    I'm an OLD Pokemon fan, and I was getting sick of the repetitiveness the franchise was already starting to suffer from. So I jumped on with Yokai Watch 3, cuz I researched how the western release is a special version with all the content from it's different versions; so much content I couldn't even 100% it cuz I'd gotten my fill before hitting that point. I love alot of the designs and the switch ups they throw at you to keep gameplay fresh.
    I think the mindset you need to actually enjoy these titles is that IT IS NOT pretending to be Pokemon, the story plays out like an episodic anime, and they make battles play like micro-managing minigames as the monsters do the fighting for you. I've played alot of different monster collecting games over the years and I'd say Yokai Watch is a standout. But maybe my entire opinion is invalid cuz I found TemTem uninteresting.

    Pokemon has a deeper battle system and breeding mechanics, but as a series, Yokai Watch does world building so much better. The environments are well designed and truly capture the spirit of discovery like looking for yokai in trees and underneath cars. The fishing and insect collecting are rewarding and feel like Animal Crossing. There are sidequests that flesh out the world and the yokai personalities.Then Yokai Watch 3 has an entire mode separate from the story where it's a dungeon crawler and you can play as almost every single yokai in the game. Yokai that have a 3d model with full animations because Level 5 figured out how to do that on the 3ds while GameFreak can barely do it on the Switch, lol.
    In conclusion, I'm the guy who actually likes Yokai Watch and it bums me out we never got 4 localized. I can only hope Level 5's upcoming games do well enough that it finally happens.

    I'll be honest, the reason *_I_* got into Yo-kai Watch stems from that fateful day when I realized that mainline Pokémon games were going downhill but also that I needed *_something_* to hyperfixate on before November 2019 would come and I'd finally have the opportunity to buy my own Nintendo Switch and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    36:30 Funny you should say that, Ant - Scarlet/Violet got two of my friends *_out of_* Pokémon (at least the mainline games) as it made them more privy to the likelihood that The Pokémon Company cares more about merchandise sales than about the quality of the games, and I myself am *_still_* waiting for the day it becomes stable, like a kid in the back of the car during a road trip repeatedly asking, "Are we there yet?" And the answer is no, Scarlet/Violet is *_not_* there yet, and it might *_never_* be there ever, so my chances of buying and subsequently playing it are significantly lower than with any mainline Pokémon game prior. If anything, the absolute state of Scarlet/Violet got me to try out *_more_* monster-taming games that aren't Pokémon, and so should You, The Person Reading This Comment Right Now.

      i agree so much with this comment. i started playing yokai watch because i was also feeling upset with the way pokemon was going. yokai watch is just so much better handled than pokemon imo, and i have been a pokemon enjoyer for my entire life and only picked up a yokai watch game last year. its so sad that all the other yokai watch games are always just assumed to be like yokai watch 1 when that is easily the worst game in the series. theres a reason why yokai watch 3 is so high in price. yes, it was a limited release, but its also probably the best game on the whole system. i also feel like yokai watch encapsulates that childishness of being 10-13 better than pokemon ever has.
      anyone seeing this reply that is disappointed in the state of pokemon right now, please give yokai watch a shot. yokai watch 2: psychic specters is the best version of ykw2 but fleshy souls and bony spirits may be a bit more accessible at the moment, and if you can get your hands on it (or are willing to sail the high seas for it) yokai watch 3 is probably the best game in the whole series.

      Also keep it alive for the chance that the switch fails, just like how the Gameboy advance and the DS co-existed for a while

    Hm, you can tell whenever someone played Super Mario Maker 3DS for playing levels vs making levels just based on if they liked it or not.
    If you pick the game up for making levels, you'd have probably hated it because they've locked everything behind the badly made Nintendo story levels.
    And then you can only share created levels via multi-cartridge sharing.
    But that's not a problem for someone who would just want to play levels, because online levels were still a thing on that version.

    The next Fire Emblem remake (based off the 4th game, Geneology of the Holy War) is currently rumored to be upcoming on Switch. This is supported by bot the internal code of Engage (which is Iron18 in code, where Three Houses was Iron16), plus was mentioned in the leak alongside Engage.

    I’m the Style Savvy fan. I have hundreds of hours in all 4 of them. I cry daily for them to release a new one (I’ll take a port even). The team that made it has a game coming up don’ soon, Fashion Dreamer or something? It looks like it’s only focused on the clothes and outfits though, while the entire shop gameplay has been left out.

    You should have added me to this video Scott. I played my 3DS religiously throughout 2017-2020. Technically the system wasn't killed off till then and there were a few games still released in 2020.

    I had sold my 3DS in 2015 but after playing Zelda: BotW I bought a new one to replay ALBW and some other games. Also played Luigi’s Mansion, Samus Returns, and a lot of the indie and downloadable games. It’s weird to think that the 3DS came out when the Wii was still the current console, the post-switch stuff feels shockingly “current”.

    I kinda hope with whatever console nintendo has next, it adapts some of the DNA that made the 3ds and Wii U special, such as new revamped versions of street pass or mii verse to build a more interactive community.

    I didn’t buy a 3DS till 2016 and a Switch till 2021, so I was happy to see the 3DS survive for so long after the Switch released. Also Sushi Striker for life.

    Its weird to think about how the 3DS stayed alive for so long after the switch because some of the games were still worth keeping it on your person. Like, yeah, BOTW and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were good, but i still had Smash 4 for my 3DS. I think Smash Ultimate basically ended the system if it wasnt already dead

    What sucks about the AlphaDream death was that The Bowser’s inside story 3ds remake released the same day as New Super Mario bros U Deluxe and there was zero marketing outside of Japan.

    • @Mimi.1001
      @Mimi.1001 11 месяцев назад

      By the point the game came out in the west (couple weeks to a month after Japan), AlphaDream was on the brink of bankruptcy already (probably since 2017 even) and Nintendo, seeing initial sales, then gave up marketing altogether I believe. They just wanted to focus on the Switch by then and leave the 3DS behind. The release date in general was a bit weird and I feel like they pushed the game back a little to mark the 10th anniversary of the original (It was supposed to celebrate it). Like come on it's just a Remake using an existing engine, which was announced way back in March 2018 with a full complete-looking trailer. A release for holiday season a month earlier would have been much better. In January, parents won't buy new games when they have spent enough money for Chrismas already.

    I may have mixed feelings on Fire Emblem Echoes (Really like the story, characters, and art direction, don’t really like playing it), but I am happy to see it get more of a following, not to mention sell better than it did when it first released.
    Also, Fates fan here, Fates is not bad. Warriors is also amazing (played the Switch version).

    • @NepBeard
      @NepBeard 11 месяцев назад

      Glad to see another Fates fan. Conquest is still my fav Fire Emblem (story aside lol, but even that’s not anywhere near as bad as a lot of people claim).
      I think Fates hate itself is rather overstated, it’s the second best selling game in the series.
      Also agree with Echoes. The production values were amazing but it was painfully unfun to play and I ended up never finishing

    • @ramennoodles776
      @ramennoodles776 11 месяцев назад

      Agreed re: the fates slander, conquest has my favorite gameplay in the series! I can’t believe we’re still just saying “fates bad” and dismissing it. I actually don’t have much issue with echoes’ gameplay (although those maps…), I just have a lot of gripes with the story that I feel are always brushed off because Echoes’s presentation is extremely good and it came off of fates.
