    Grunge was a lifestyle. The clothes, (thrift store) cars (older used) furniture (found on curb).
    In music it translated into being REAL! Nothing fake. Beautiful sounds took a backseat to writing songs that were relatable. Often touching subjects people didnt want to talk about.

      As glam rock hit its zenith, the manufactured, the makeup, the production, the pyro, and lyrics about being the best, then all the sudden here came grunge. It was a moment like the Emperor's New Clothes, that we realized the the glam rock stuff was largely a farce...

    Grunge was labelled to this type of music because it was so raw and gritty - before this rockstars that were popular were hair bands, all about the look and living the high life and then Nirvana came out with other bands such a Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, etc that all had this look and attitude that was like "f all that" it was about the way regular people felt, the emotions, the pain, the "angst", and so fourth.
    This is the first time seeing one of your videos but you should take a trip down the "Grunge" road, as well as a video I always suggest to people: "How Smells Like Teen Spirit Changed the World".

  • @michaelakkerman407

    Coming from Seattle i always felt Grunge was a movement akin to Punk in the 70's. More stripped down heart felt singing from the soul and putting everything out on your sleeve. No flashy shit just straight in your face rock that moves your soul to tears or joy...no unskinny bop-bop here.

    • @42Mrgreenman
      @42Mrgreenman Год назад +2

      I think the movements share many common elements, the punks were rebelling against the "Clean" society that wanted them to conform, and the grunge kids, growing up in middle class America, only saw a future of becoming a corporate drone as the tech and wall st. revolution occurred in the 80's and 90's...IMHO, the differentiating factor is that the punks thought that they MAY actually win the war and is much more outspoken and bombastic, whereas the grunge movement has a much more haunting inevitability of disaster and impending doom feel or at least resignation to the fatal inevitability of it all about it that just rips those emotions right to the surface and puts them on full display...Reminds me of Shelly's, Ozymandias...no matter how hard you try, fate and time will eventually turn you to dust.

    Helene here, Sal. I really “discovered” grunge during lockdown. I didn’t listen to the genre when it was big, being in my forties at the time, those weren’t the stations I listened to. But I’ve come to appreciate and respect the HELL out of those bands from Seattle……my hometown. Grunge, as a genre, I would say is defined by its dark subject matter, its dark vibe in general, it’s anger, it’s hard edge, it’s heavy bass, and a certain style of singing. The vocalists of the main bands are universally great singers…….Eddie Vedder of PJ is the only one still with us. Lost the others to drugs and Suicide. I think that’s why grunge lasted a relatively short time: the music was excellent, but it was so dark and I think people wanted to go lighter after awhile. It’s filled with youthful angst, and most of us get out of that stage after a bit. BUT…..definitely listen to more grunge…it’s excellent rock….Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden are main bands.

    • @Fenrir1
      @Fenrir1 2 года назад +1

      I'd like to add that grunge also was "raw" in many ways, and not cleaned up or dressed up. The sound isn't produced to seem too polished but more like it was live, the style is simple without makeup or theatrics, no stage pyrotechnics etc.

    • @CurtdWar
      @CurtdWar 2 года назад +1

      Additionally to the descriptions above me, Grunge was a reaction to the hair metal of the 80's. So as stated by Fenrir, not overproduced, but also musically a little more base driven, no guitar solo's. Less emphasis on flashy musicians and more emphasis on tight music. Good musicians that crafted good music, with an emphasis on emotion not flash. I still love grunge as much today as I did then.

  • @ankhgirl3

    I remember watching this performance on MTV. A yes, Pearl Jam was a big deal. Oh my goodness the songs they put out. I’d say some other popular ones are:
    1. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town”
    2. Evenflow
    3. Alive
    Many, many more from there. The catalog is deep.
    And I believe you nailed the description of the “Grunge” genre. It was not only the style musically, but it actually spilled over into fashion as well. Such a great t-shirt and jeans era that I’m happily stuck in. 😊

    Always good vibes when I see another person pulled into the PJ web. I believe Given To Fly was their biggest billboard hit #1 for 5 weeks, 22 total weeks on the chart. They currently continue to receive grammys and billboard placement for their work. I have tickets to see them in Amsterdam next month and am so ecstatic. ✌️
    Also grunge was a name originally given to Seattle bands who came out in the early 90's. It was a style (dressed down, even ragged clothes) The vocal styling was also similar, Rock with a more forward placement as most country singers do. The different bands had similar attributes, but all had a unique sound. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees all jumped onto the mainstream scene around '91,
    taking the world by storm.
    RIP those who were lost before their time.

    MTV UNplugged, by its very nature, was acoustic That was the point…..,take these hard rock and grunge bands…unplug them and enjoy the melodies and emotions. Most famous unpluggeds that I know about are the grunge bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. All excellent. It was this series by MTV which got Page and Plant back together to reimagine many of the Zeppelin songs in their catalogue. But they, being who they are, didn’t just unplug. They brought in an Egyptian orchestra, a hurdy-gurdy player, an orchestral string section, an Indian singer and more to create an amazing performance, which they then toured. Their new collaboration lasted about six years, ending in 1999.

    To me Grunge is 70's style music with dark themes. In the 70's groups like Zeppelin were singing about women with flowers in their hair. Grunge is them singing about men with heroine needles in their arms. Grunge deals more with inner pain. I love grunge because of the similarities to 70's music and that it is unique because of the topics they sing about.
    By the way, this song has electric guitars on the album. "The "Unplugged" format meant no electric guitars.

    That is a good description of quite a few of what would be called grunge bands that their singers have a grungy raw sound to their voice. But what I also find very singular to the 90s is the self-deprecating emotional journey that musicians were allowed to take during this decade. In the '80s you had hair bands that talked about you know girls and partying and whatnot. And then you got into the 90s and you've got lightning crashes by live and zombie by The cranberries and you've got Pearl jam and I feel like the 90s were really Historic musically, where people were able to be completely vulnerable.

    Grunge was originally referring to the down tuned, grungy, fuzzed guitar riffs (which don’t really apply to this acoustic version).
    Eddie’s voice and singing style became so popular it was copied by a lot of later bands and kinda became a meme before there was such a thing.
    He also had a chest cold during this performance which makes it even more amazing.
    In the early 90’s PJ was one of the most popular bands around the world and they still have a huge worldwide following today.

    I think the term “grunge” referred to the look as much as the sound. In the 80’s MTV era, we were used to “glam” in our hard rock/metal music, meaning make-up and big hair and black leather…then along came Nirvana…messy, unwashed, angsty….we were all hooked. I remember my ripped jeans and flannels were like a uniform for me after that.

    Grunge was a lifestyle. It’s unapologetically unpolished and raw. It’s real.
