Eddie said for years he felt bad for that cameraman as he thought the guy was upset with Eddie for jumping. Turns out the cameraman was yelling for those guys at the bottom to hold it so when Ed jumped the camera guy wouldn't go flying off. Eddie actually recently reunited with the cameraman and brought him onstage at one of their concerts. It's was really cool
Eddie cracked Jeff Ament (the bass player with the towel on his head at the end) with the microphone swinging it like Roger Daltrey and that's why they were checking him out at the end. You can hear it at about the 10:38 mark and see Jeff holding his head in the background. 🙂
I saw them live in '93 at the Mesa Amphitheater and it was mind blowing! Butthole Surfers opened. I got a black eye getting caught up in the mosh pit unintentionally!
Pearl Jam's first huge festival so they were very overwhelmed, they did not headline this concert, I heard they blew all the whole crowd away! Going down Pearl Jam rabbit hole is exciting!! Please do. Thank you for sharing this awesome video with us!! 😊💓🤘✌️
I have been watching, listening, and loving Pearl Jam since 1991! Their acoustic live performance on MTV was the BESTS! Saw them in concert a few times and I have to say, they are my favorite band of all time - Queen being my second favorite!! I agree with @sharoncarlisle9453 - your next should be "Better Man" live at Madison Square Garden - 2010! Incredible interaction with the audience!!!
At the end Ed was spinning the mic around and it smashed the bass guitarist Jeff Ament on the head....that's why he was down with the towel on his head......man, check the whole set out, they were on fire 🔥
Wild video. Most people say it’s a must see because of the stage diving (obviously). But please, PLEASE, watch them do this same song, “Porch”, on MTV’s Unplugged. It’s an amazing version, with unforgettable vocals by Eddie Vedder. MTV used to require that the musicians always stay seated during their sets on the show, and well, you can see just how PJ handled that too. Brilliant. Every Pearl Jam performance is unique, and their sound evolved and matured over the years, as did Eddie’s singing, so it’s hard to encapsulate their “sound” in one song, or even one style. The rabbit hole is very deep here, and worth exploring. You should also look into Eddie’s solo work, which is very different from PJ. Take a listen to the music he wrote for the movie, “Into The Wild” - especially the songs “Society”, “Rise”, and “Guaranteed”.
this entire concert is iconic and worth a watch (and endless rewatches!) the little girl poster on the back of the stage is the pinkpop festival logo and nothing to do with PJ. Porch is notorious for being the song Eddie always does something crazy during. the long instrumental break in the middle left him with time on his hands to climb around. i love how after the crowd falls down he is asking if everyone is ok and once he gets back on stage he goes over to that side to make sure everyone is getting back up. there are compilation videos of all his climbing shenanigans during Porch through the years. i believe he did his last climb in 2016 but he still likes to jump off speakers and stuff on stage. unfortunately he had to stop crowd surfing fairly early on because the crowd started tearing his clothes and pulling out his hair for souvenirs and it just wasn't safe. he said the music made him feel invincible and if he had to kill himself to give the audience a good show, he was going to do it. He also wanted to somehow convey how much the music meant to him and he couldn't contain his energy or enthusiasm. he also got caught by a tv interviewer (he tried to avoid him) not long after this concert was over and talks about how overwhelmed he was by their first huge crowd. it's also here on youtube. soundgarden also played at this festival and chris cornell was interviewed by the same tv host, which is worth looking for as well.
Anyone that tells you that Pearl Jam changed over the years, they are right. They started off as 20 somethings that were full of angst and anger. They have grown over the years. As their music grew they acknowledged that they did as well. They did not try to hold on to the 20 year old angst into their fifties. It doesn't change the power that their music has had. But they definitely changed over the years to promote their power in a different way Eddie is still a power house, but he's not climbing the rafters in his 50s🤷♀️
Hi, Salvo! New subsciber here. Stumbled over your channel when you reacted to Pearl Jam unplugged singing Black. I wish you'd also watch them perform Black at this very festival, Pinkpop '92. Eddie's emotions are raw. Makes me cry and gives me chills all at once. Anyway, thank you for doing what you do and I really enjoy your channel!!!
As a Pearl Jam fan since 1992, I highly recommend you check out some more recent stuff as well. This stuff from the early days is obviously phenomenal, but this is a band who has grown and evolved, been consistently fantastic for 30 plus years now, and maintained all their vitality and passion, even if Eddie doesn't dive into the crowd anymore.
One of my favorite things to do is watch Corduroy over the years from shows I've been to. It's still so strange to watch Soldier Field 95 and Wrigley 2016 back to back.
Pearl Jam = a band with so many dimensions that all make you want more!!! Pink Pop had soooooo many amazing bands and performers that you should check that festival out as a whole 🤘🖤
Pearl Jam defined the grunge sound! Several have attempted to copy Eddie Vedder but he IS the original! About the only front man from that era still alive.
Pearl Jam's shows were crazy. European festivals were crazy. Pearl Jam at European festivals were frickin' insane. Shows at pinkpop festival seem to be the best festival, dunno, I've never been but would like to.
They did an encore right after this and covered Neil Young's Rockin' in the Free World, which was also excellent. You can see their buddies from Soundgarden in a couple of shots just off stage to the right. I think that doll at 8:58 was just some promotional artwork that they used that year for their tour, I remember seeing it on some shirts and other memorabilia.
Seen them 3 times. They give their all every concert of 3 hours! Took my nephews to The Gorge outdoor arena WA state, overlooking the Columbia River. Blind Melon opened, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young, who was so wasted that PJ came onstage during his set. Great concert. ❤
It is not about reactions. It is about the experience of being introduced to the new eras / different types of music. We watch for your reaction. Yet at the same time we enjoy someone being introduced to the classics that they didn't know were classics
@8:58 that is a pink doll and Pinkpop's logo. The joke is that "pop" is also the Dutch equivalent of English "puppet", which is less narrow defined and is also used for dolls. But the "pop" in pinkpop comes from "popular music" and the "pink" comes from Pinksteren, the Dutch name for Pentecost, the date the festival was originally held. So it is kind a like a visual wordplay. Attendance +/- 50-55k and it was raining all day. There is also quite a famous still shot of Eddie jumping off that crane. Note also the hint of Jimmi Hendrix in the guitar solo
These guys have always been a great live band. I've seen them like 5 times over the years since back in the day and they always delivered, including in recent years now that they're older and no longer stage dive into the crowd and all the crazy crap they did back then.
On the contrary... Eddie cared/cares about EVERYTHING!!!!! That's why he has NO problem letting his energy out!! He is as real and raw as it gets. Not a madman... a decent soul who feels strongly about writing and singing with purpose and intent to help and heal. You will NEVER, EVER find a Pearl Jam song about T&A!!!! They write and record songs from their souls with the intent to help, heal and unite. As rocking and crazy as their performances were/are... they are from their souls and with great GOOD intent. Peace and light...
@@arnoldcox9128 🥰Oh ok, I get it! And you are 100% correct!!!👊 Eddie didn't care about safety... all he cared about was conveying the message. What they are about is being a rock band and making the music they want to hear and play. They put their emotions out there and try to just be themselves. That approach has led to over 30 years of worldwide sold out shows.
I didn’t listen to Pearl Jam when I was a teenager. I heavily resisted grunge at the time. I started listening to Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains about a year ago and am really enjoying getting to know them. I for whatever reason thought they were just chill but have been pleasantly surprised by their intensity 😊
Shoutout to Sarah, I requested this under the last Pearl Jam reaction and am so glad you’re doing it. Fun fact: with the exception of the chord progression, the instrumental/solo/“beautiful day” section in the middle is improvised and is done different every show
This was when they were used to playing smaller venues. Before this they'd never toured outside the US, they blew up and went on a global tour in 1992. So when Eddie jumped into the crowd he was doing what he was used to doing at small venues. You can see when the crowd collapses under him he panics and he's yelling at them to get up because he knew it was a very dangerous situation. When he gets back on stage he checks again to make sure no one was stuck or getting trampled. Bear in mind there had been several crowd crush incidents at festivals before this. You can see bassist Ement having to be comforted at the end there because he thought Eddie had fallen off. Eddie was always doing insane crap like that. There are videos of him swinging from cables and climbing up stages. Back then we were all pretty certain he would fall to his death some day during a live show. We're all very glad he didn't, and that he's stopped thinking he's Spider Man lol
“Better Man” in Madison Square Garden is a great suggestion, you should definitely watch it. And for future videos, maybe you could check out other videos such as “Do The Evolution” (powerful song and message), also “Blood” (video version). I really enjoy watching your reactions, always entertaining ❤

The bass player, who looks exhausted at the end had actually just been hit in the head by a guitar that the lead guitar player through in the air! You can see the guitar player leaning over him, making sure he was alright.
In the spirit of keeping it real for Pearl Jam, for Salvo and any other person who comes across this... I want to clarify that it wasn't the lead guitar player (Mike McCready) who hit Bassist Jeff Ament. It was Eddie Vedder who hit him accidentally in the head (and Eddie had NO clue at the time that he'd hit anyone😉) with the microphone that Eddie was swinging around (as always! lol!!👏😜). You can clearly see Stone Gossard (PJ's rhythm guitarist) walk over to Jeff Ament (bassist) and put his hand on Jeff asking if he's ok. So sweet and SOOOOO Pearl Jam!🤗 But honestly... Jeff Ament knew better than to be anywhere near Eddie at the end of any song! lol!!!😅🤣😂 Eddie was always swinging the mic around like a fool when he was feeling a performance/the connection with the crowd!😉🙃 Jeff was completely ok with being hit in the head by the mic. He loved Eddie then... and still does to this day (30+yrs later)!! That's why PJ is still going strong today. Beautiful all the way around!!😊
