This is the magic of Eddie Vedder. He hits the listener on a visceral level, pouring his soul into every performance. And Pearl Jam is special live. Listening to them is a deep rabbit hole, because there are so many live recordings and videos of them. And they’re all unique. Each show is different. That’s why their fans will see multiple nights of concerts in one tour - because each night is totally different from the one before. They’re a truly special band. And Eddie is an incredible talent and energy. I just love them. (Btw, in ‘92, Eddie turned 28.)
30 years of hearing these songs and I still have those same physical and emotional reactions.

I recently learned that only roughly 50% of people get goosebumps and are moved by music. That made me so sad for half of everyone. The feelings I get from music I wouldn't trade for anything, especially a song like "Release".

We gotta get you introduced to Alice In Chains and some more grunge. I have always identified with this genre more than any other. I absolutely love Pearl Jam, but want you to experience so much more 🖤
This song was used in a movie called "Out of the Furnace" with Christian Bale and Casey Affleck. It has a visceral effect on many people of which I am one. I listened to this on repeat when my beloved father died. It is cathartic.
I agree with the suggestions for "Oceans" from the unplugged show. I also want to add in "Breathe" from the Drop in the Park gig. It's a really fun performance by Pearl Jam before they became the huge phenomenon that they did. And not to quibble with another good comment, but Eddie is a very late December birthday so he was 27 for most of '92.

also i read that eddie originally wrote several songs for use with "out of the furnace" and the director decided they were so good he couldn't use them for the soundtrack because they pulled the viewer out of the movie, so he ended up just using release. eddie took those other songs and decided to never release them so they are in his journals somewhere never to be seen again.
For a long time I only heard this song from the album Ten. I always thought the first few notes he sings were an instrument in the band. It wasn't until I watched a live performance that I realized it was Eddie. It seems obvious now, but that's how I heard it for a long time.
"BETTER MAN" Live at Madison Square Garden (5/21/10) should be next!! Now, I can't even get started on "Release", it's one of those songs that I feel deep in my soul. Don't know if this helps you in describing Eddie's voice but this is how it has always read to me... his voice is guttural (coming straight from his soul). He's never had singing lessons or anything like that. He's said he doesn't care about a perfect voice. Says he just sings it how he's feeling it and considers it a privilege to share his music with others.
He has also stated that he considers the platform he and the guys of PJ have a gift and also a responsibility. To this day they remain committed to helping others heal through music (all music, NOT just their own) and charity work. Love Pearl Jam and loved this reaction!!
Please check out "Better Man" live at MSG 2010. It's 16yrs after the song was released, and that's the point... it's just as moving all those years later and the connection Eddie has with the crowd in that performance is off the charts!!!! P.S... Eddie wrote it while reflecting on his mother's struggles with her relationship with his stepfather while he was growing up. He wrote it for her and for anyone struggling with the same issues (it's a timeless struggle). As deep and moving as Better Man is... sonically vocally... it kicks azz!! You're gonna love it!!

The first video where you would hear and see Eddie sing with Pearl Jam is a duet with Chris Cornell in Temple of the Dog, Hunger Strike. This is a tribute album to Andrew Wood of Mother Love bone who died of a Heroin overdose. Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard who were members of the band Mother Love Bone, who also formed Pearl Jam, also played in this video.
that's the first official video eddie is in, but the first performance of pearl jam from oct. 22, 1990 is here on youtube as well. they perform release there as well and they had been together for just a week.
and there are actually some bootlegs of eddie singing in previous bands before pearl jam, look for bad radio bootlegs!

Dude, this song still elicits tears 30 years after hearing it for the first time. I can't relate to the lyrics, but this song instantly attached itself to my heart. I try and fight the tears, but lose every single time. Ten remains one of the greatest albums in my adult life. I'm glad this song touched you on an instant emotional level too.
I was lucky enough to have seen them live twice in the 90s. The first time I saw them in Southern New Mexico, the Ramones opened for them! Not sure if you've done a reaction to any of the Ramones' songs. Good stuff and examples of the 70s punk scene in the US.

Best live band I’ve ever seen in my 54 years. I’ve seen them 15 plus times in multiple cities, three countries and two states. When they open with you know it’s going to be an amazing show.
As someone who was 12 when Pearl Jam broke out and also as someone who has loved Eddie for that many years, I appreciate your astute observations. They're really right on the money most of the time. I enjoy this reaction channel a lot. Thank you for doing it.

It was 1994, early days. The concert had Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and so many more heavy hitters. No one had really heard of Eddie Vedder. He blew them away.

His Baritone Vocals and the Voice that reverberates from His Soul with raw emotion is mindblowing and again a full blown Experience that is felt from Vedder’s inner Soul to Our Ears and into Our Own Magical POV and thoughts! Btw Love Your Vids! PJ and Vedder have been longtime favorite of mine All time and am so grateful to have seen them live 7 times and 4 in different States and Venues (Theatres, Arenas, Festivals ect.)

this is my favorite PJ song and my favorite live performance ever. it's a religious experience for me and it's so great that you listened to it. i want everyone to experience it.
you may notice that eddie says 'oh dear dad...' the first time and then 'oh dear jack, can you see me now' the second time. this is in reference to jack irons, who was asked to be the drummer for the band when they were first forming. jack had to pass but he gave the demo tape to eddie since they were also looking for a singer and that's how eddie got in contact with stone and jeff and ended up joining the band. eddie credits jack with starting it all for him. eddie also occasionally changes the name during a performance to honor some person that is special to him that night.
if you want to see the first performance of this song you can look up their very first performance oct. 22, 1990. the video is here on youtube and although the quality isn't very good, it's clear they were something special from the beginning. that performance in 1990 is after they had been together for just one week.
the reason the sound is so good on this video is because its the soundboard audio recording combined with the live video. a lot of their bootlegs you find online have the soundboard audio. they recorded and video taped pretty much every concert and some have been released to the public and some have not.
pjvideoguy has a pearl jam bootleg archive on his channel with a couple hundred recordings. pearljamonline also has quite a lot. enjoy!
The 2016 Wrigley performance was another epic one. The crowd really gets into it and carries the song to another level. Highly recommended.
A bazaar thing happened to me over the past 3 decades of a Pearl Jam fan....I had enjoyed the music and felt their impact on me, but what transpired over the years is how the emotions and the lyrics of many of the deep meaning tracts correlated with experiences in my own life many years later. Almost as if they could see the future of what I would be dealing with, from a difficult break up or similar struggles i had that the words in these songs helped me to relate to my feelings at the time. Black, Release, Rear View Mirror, and Animal just to mention a few. So after all that explanation...I request an eclectic, emotional song from them,"I got ID". ..also known to P.J. fans as the "I got shit" song. Helene here. I’ve never heard this song before. I got chills too. For me, it was Vedder using his voice as an instrument at the beginning of the song to make that droning sound. That’s a very ancient human sound …..and I think there’s almost a genetic memory that makes allot of us react to it. Sal….remember In the Light by Zeppelin, and your reaction? It began with a synth making a droning sound. And then add his incredible voice and its power….Great pick by your patron.

One of my favorite PJ songs, singing this song at the top of my lungs has helped me get through some tough times. His voice lyrics and overall performance is once in a multigenerational. I’m 72 and a life long music freak and his voice commands respect. Also though, the band members are individually underrated. They are fantastic.
There’s actually a lot of old Pearl Jam Footage out there. Some of it is better than others, but I am eternally grateful for all of it! If you’re thinking about doing the song Oceans next, I would recommend the live version of it from 4/12/94 at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. Also, for at least some of the old video footage from back in the day, there are soundboard recorded bootlegs out there (for free, of course. Through file sharing) that people have dubbed over the old videos. That’s why the sound is so good.

A lot of PJ's songs are incredibly raw and emotional, which is probably why they resonated so deeply. Rearview Mirror is a particularly intense song, and was an anthem for me back then. It helped break out of a toxic relationship... I'll love Eddie Vedder forever for that!

This song is a very emotional song for me too, as I had a real father but was seperated at an early age and was brought up by a step father too.. wasn't the best but then managed to 'find' my real father again at 17.. Sadly we lost contact a bit then he died a few years later.. i only found out after the fact.. still have trouble with it but this song gives me so much solace.. Pearl Jam and Eddie really are a comfort.. Eddie manages to speak to the heart..Its raw emotion.. words and music♥

EPIC song! thanks for sharing. They represented for so many the eye opening rapid changes of the 90s. Even though its about his late father. Its him finding how he fits in the world. Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time. Eddie's vocals are my favorite to sing to as we have similar voices (his is better haha). But I've always loved listening to them especially while driving. Legendary band.

Check out the movie, Singles. Not only does it have a kick ass soundtrack, but the movie portrays the Seattle scene and gunge scen in their infancy. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden all are featured in the movie, and the actual band Pearl Jam star in the movie as the band for Matt Dillon as it's lead singer. All around great time!! 😊
This is probably a new suggestions but it's another song that shows Eddie's depth almost 30 years later. It's "Comes Then Goes" from their most recent studio album "Gigaton". Most assume it's about his relationship with Chris Cornell. He's incredibly pissed and heartbroken at the same time. Talk about an emotions that we can all relate to...

I highly recommend you listen to the videos from the soundtrack of the movie "Into the Wild" based on a true story made by Sean Penn who personally chose Eddie Vedder to compose all the songs and sing them throughout the movie!!!

For me it's an amazing track. Why not try one of the moments that you get Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder singing together in a song called Hunger Strike. It's so moving and really works with two gods of grunge.

Way up there on many levels but the song writing and the use of emotion in the sound has got to be in a very short list along with the other recognized songwriters/ bands. Saw them several times back then but 98-99 blowed my mind.

camcorders in the 90's would not have the ability to record the sound this well. this video has the soundboard audio matched to the live footage. a lot of their bootlegs that are available have the soundboard audio, which was freely available. pj encouraged people to bootleg their shows and they recorded pretty much every show themselves as well.

It was during that same week that I was up there [In Seattle rehearsing with Pearl Jam]. Day four maybe, or day five, they did a Temple [of the Dog] rehearsal after our afternoon rehearsal. I got to watch these songs, and watch how Chris [Cornell] was working, and watch Matt [Cameron] play drums. It got to "Hunger Strike" - I was sitting in the corner, putting duct tape on a little African drum. About two-thirds of the way through, he was having to cut off the one line, and start the other. I'm not now, and certainly wasn't then, self-assured or cocky, but I could hear what he was trying to do, so I walked up to the mic - which I'm really surprised I did - and sang the other part, "Going hungry, going hungry." The next time I was up, he asked if I'd record it - so it was just me and Chris in the same studio that we made [1991's] Ten record. I really like hearing that song. I feel like I could be real proud of it - because one, I didn't write it, and two, it was such a nice way to be ushered onto vinyl for the first time. I'm indebted to Chris time eternal for being invited onto that track.[6]
That was the first time I heard myself on a real record. It could be one of my favorite songs that I’ve ever been on - or the most meaningful.
