  • In this video, I'm going to give you the rundown on the steps needed to make your Automatic Subaru hold various amounts of power, and take it from undesirable to exhilarating to drive.
    This applies to both 4eat and 5eat vehicles, due to having similar upgrades available, so you shouldn't feel left out that I'm using a 5eat as an example.
    I'll be covering all the known weak points, and what to upgrade to prevent them from holding you back from your power goals, gaining positive, fast shifts at the same time. If you plan to make power on your automatic Subaru, this short video is packed with information I've learned over the years, so you can be confident and make the right choices the first time around.
    Hope you all enjoy, and Thanks for watching.

      Yeah, people always need options, and if theres info out there, it should be talked about, as not everyone has the means financially to perform a full manual swap, which is known to be a lot more involved on most of the chassis' that the 5eat came in, and some just naturally prefer to have an auto in there for one reason or another.
      Having had a built one for around 4 years now, they are pretty nice once you get them dialed in. 👌👌

      Yeah they're very hit and miss. My outback original was good up until 190k when it completely let go, then with the upgrade they used the factory 190k valvebody for the upgrade which was a no go, still has issues 3rd to 4th due to sticking solenoids that I'll be swapping out here in one of the next videos.

    I've found the gen3 H6 outbacks to be excellent for towing after a bit more suspension. The towing experience is better than any 'comparable' truck, esp WRT handling, esp esp in inclement weather. EXCEPT. The 5EAT's are undercooled to their potential, and those clutch packs are just waiting for a reason. "I'm going to do most of these upgrades when I uncook my tranny" but I probably won't ever... Or maybe I'll just save my engine for a backyard helicopter that won't ever get built.

      There's quite a bit that goes into it. All in all, even if you fully decked one out, it would be cheaper than a swap. I want to say i had around 5k total into mine, and that was requesting the gucci treatment. Truck transmissions will be quite a bit more beefy stock, so not much needed there for "most" of them wear wise. (There are some that are just known utter failures 😆)

The 3.0r pairs nicely with the 5eat, so honestly, I'd do a little as needed for now. Change the filter behind the drivers headlight, flush the transmission and the cooler, and have somewhere do a relearn/ clear memory 2 in the TCM, and you should be good to go👌

  • @lgt304
    @lgt304 Год назад

    You are correct Hexmods aka David. Does not offer any services for the 5EAT anymore. He has moved onto a better job fulltime . It's why I decided to do an 08 spec b 6 speed swap into my 05 Legacy GT Limited that was at one point modified with an IPT valvebody mod but ended up having issues with solenoids once I got it back and it went back and forth and never got resolved.

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад

      Glad he's doing well with his new job, he put way more time and effort into this platform over the years than anyone could have asked him to.
      That's basically the same story with my level 10 full build. Had issues with hang up 3rd to 4th prior to being modified, and nothing was done about the issues during the build, because my high mileage vb and its solenoids were reused, so I actually have a refurbished solenoid kit coming to swap them out with to see if I can get it back to 100% before I swap it into the legacy.
      From what I've seen (assuming it had something to do with enough people having similar issues) level 10 no longer offers send in for modification valve bodies for the 5eat, and have switched to only offering new modified units. So this may be a positive change for anyone getting these services done these days.

    Hey Matt, I got a question in reference to 4EAT...I know this is 5eat but I'm trying to help someone.
    There ABS light is on and AT temp light blinks on as soon as car starts, dead cold. So obviously temp can't be hot...I thought it meant AWD is disabled in there 2005 Impreza/,wrx. None of my scanners can access there ABS, SRS, TCM stuff and I'm not sure why. No CEL. trans shifts perfectly, atf doesn't overheat(checked manually). What do think?

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад +2

      Flashing AT temp will be a tcm mil code. You'd need something that reads tcm codes like an ssm3 to be able to check it, but it is likely a valve body code of some kind. It could be something that doesn't necessarily affect shifting, like torque converter lock up. You'd likely have to bring it to a dealer to have it read. the tough part is getting them not to charge you for a full diagnostic.

    • @shiloh5199
      @shiloh5199 Год назад +2

      @@MatlasDI thank you for your response...I definitely have verified that his rear wheels aren't applying any torque at all. It sucks because my good scanner is capable of reading all the ABS, TCM, SRS, ect. and my scanner has an OEM function. I can only get generic DTC, I/M , live data and nothing else.

    Been thinking about a shift kit and trans cooler just don't know whats a good brand for a thermostatic trans cooler

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад +1

      The most popular option has been a trucool 4451 LPD, a lot of people shoot for bigger and wind up switching back because they overcool their units. Either way, you would want a dedicated 10%/100% flow through bypass thermostat routed into the lines themselves. Derale makes these for the 11/32" lines which can be fairly easily routed in between where they run together after the oil filter assembly, as for the thermostats operating temp, you'd shoot for 180* as ideally you want Temps to stay between 160-180*, it's likely you'd never get a setup that keeps you there under all conditions, but this would get you pretty dang close and be leaps and bounds better than stock.

    • @MatlasDI
      @MatlasDI  Год назад

      @ACID MIKE they have their inline thermostat that you could get to work, but it's pretty speedy compared to a derale or others. As for their oil cooler, they are pretty good, don't need too big of one, just enough to aid in keeping Temps where they need to be. Regardless of what you go with, I'd recommend a bar and plate design.

      All in you're probably around 5k to get these things up to an actual "bulletproof" level, cheaper if you have the means to do it yourself, which few can. I haven't seen failures on units that have all these issues taken car of, but I also haven't seen any being pushed passed the 600 mark, which I've seen 6 speeds hold all day. End of the day, regardless of what you do to these, a 6 speed will trump it, better diffs, more engaging to drive, engines make lose less power throigh drivetrain loss, etc, etc. I would say if you have the means to manual swap, that would be the way to go. 👌
