Radiohead is now an Art Rock band, a genre in which they use use modernist, experimental and unconventional elements, it takes music to an artistic level, with the intention of being listened, felt and contemplated rather than being danced.

The only one I haven’t heard is Gagging Order, but my other half eavesdropped on me listening and she said wow that is great, and she is not a fan so that was a bit funny. I totally agree about what you say about b sides. There are so many gems hidden on the backside of singles that never made it to the album. When it comes to Radiohead, there are really no bad songs though. I just watched a video about their worst song. Before I started to watch I was thinking to myself, “what?? There can’t be any”, and that was basically the conclusion in the video too lol.

To hear Ed's guitar separately from Jonny's, listen to the song again using only the right speaker (Jonny is on the left) - it's a bit hard to notice the brilliancy for those not used to it because he's using a huge variety of effects and feedback to achieve his sound. He does some really great stuff here, and hearing the song with both speakers again gets your mind blown by how much synergy Jonny and Ed have together. Both are brilliant musicians, but together they are something else - it's almost as if they are sharing the same mind while playing (and despite their styles being distinct, they fit together like jigsaw pieces.)

    • @2flowers116

Wolf Faraday i mean that describes the whole band man honestly. They have some of the best arrangements in rock music. The fact theyre so cohesive in all types of styles is really unique, pink floyd is another one. Just so methodical yet natural and flowing, cant beat it. Im glad someones giving ed some credit, he doesnt usually take a noticeable position but once you do notice hes the cherry on top. Dont want a sundae without the cherry

This is a pretty dense mix so it's hard to hear those details, even if you separate it by the panning. Frankly, all I hear is the real star, that Prophet pad... so good. I think....I think this song is absolute perfection. When I think of Radiohead, this song speaks to what they're capable of creating. This is no longer a "song" - it's actually a voyage taking us deeper and deeper into their world of sound. As you listen, you're being taken down the staircase. My goodness they've done it. This would have been the crown jewel on The King of Limbs.

I agree, you can't give them too much shit. They had a fluke hit with Creep, and were very confused as to what to do with the album. (Creep came out the year before PH) Also they just hadn't matured, but it still doesn't make it good. Creep is a fairly average song, and some of the songs on there like You or Lurgee are super-cheesy. But Blow Out is really good, it feels like an actual Radiohead song except for those slightly ear-grating guitars at the end.

+Alex Campion I can see why the Daily Mail wasn't included - it would have been incongruous - but I can't fathom why this song was rejected. One of the best they've done. * shakes fist *

      @alexcampion2461 8 лет назад +7

i know! it would have shifted the atmosphere of the album towards something a bit darker, which it could only have benefitted from. "the darker, the better", that's my motto!

    • @trappychan

The songs were supposed to be in the album. They weren't because they were not finished yet and they didn't feel confident in finishing them soon enough so putting the album on hold wouldn't pay off. Daily Mail felt "stuck" despite them hammering their heads against it, and Staircase was still in a very early stage. So they just released the album and left these, among a few others, for later.
      That's pretty much it.
Staircase still wasn't "done" when they recorded this, but they liked the result so much that it became the final version.
Small detail: They did not have Clive during the recordings of TKoL, but he was already with the band in this session. Maybe that's what made the jigsaw fall into place. Clive participated in the recordings for AMSP pretty much as a full member of the band (albeit not officially, like Nigel. Yet? Only time can tell).

The perfect B side really. Musically a blend of 80's Cafe Noire, 90's Berlin and a symphonic Blade Runner like synth, esp that counter melody at 2:17

Reminds me of the best holiday of my life. Me and my best mate ran away to Miami for some us time, it was really late one night nothing but lights and warm air and we took a drive, it was hot and we had a mustang convertible, the roof was down, our hair flowed in the night air. We drove across bridge after bridge, after bridge not saying a word to each other, in the hot air, just playing this song over and over again. Life changing moments.

whenever i listen to this song (or most of their songs) i feel on edge. like the music and instruments are so well put and played i feel like it's all going to fall apart if someone breaths on it. but it's so beautiful. i don't know what i'm saying, this is a great song in short.

On some other level. Dark, deep and totally out of this world. Keeping the substance in UK music. Loooooove Radiohead and other brooding and artful British acts like Massive Attack, Gary Numan, Portishead, Unkle, Atoms For Peace,
    Depeche Mode,Tricky, PJ Harvey, Allflaws

I've always appreciated this band because they constantly reinvent themselves. They redefined alternative rock. Their innovative experimentation and fearlessness in pushing music toward its greatest depth transformed how I listened to music in the 1990s and 2000s.

The ONLY downside to loving RH is that everything pales in comparison.
Upside: Always fresh with creativity, every album is so different with a common thread of familiarity through it. I spend my time wondering what direction they will take next, anxiously anticipating the next album is part of the fun of it. On one hand I want them to hurry but on the other hand I know it's going to be stellar so I have to trust their timing. I love you, RH... (I always have from the moment I heard you) ... always will love you. Thank you for the inspiration. xox

The song is truly one of their best! They have reached a point of total creative freedom, mixing patterns from different eras of their styles, with a smooth blending of all their everchanging pack of instruments and tools they have found and mastered. This is what every artist should do, explore the infinite possibilities.

Radiohead fan for nearly 30 years, first heard this one a compilation of rare and acoustic songs. It was easily the most beautiful thing I've heard in many years, and then I searched and found the song here and this different version deciding because it was different I wouldn't like it as much obviously. On my second listen it is clearly the best thing I've ever heard in my entire life. Respect
