    No matter how long Thom chooses to compose and perform songs, let's all just appreciate he wasn't another musical genius that died young or went mad. What a gift for history that this creature has given us roughly 30 years of impossibly beautiful music.

      *HEAR! HEAR!* And, he has never gone 'mad'. He has always been on point with the political and environmental climate of the time for every solo album and a few Radiohead albums. Hail to the Theif was a nod to Bush stealing the presidency from Gore and hanging chads.
      He has stated so in several late night TV interviews.

    I met Thom years and years ago in a pub in Cornwall as a mate of mine was working with a mate of his, who was working with Radiohead at that time. I remember Thom saying that every time he came up with a nice, calm tune, Jonny would then come in and start wanting to add distortion and a mass of noise over top. He wasn't complaining and said it with a smile. It seems conflicting ideas between band members can be used for very positive results while other personalities in other bands let it destroy them

    • @SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington
      @SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington 4 года назад +53

      Interesting story, but I think it's an over simplification of the song writing dynamic in the band. Jonny is capable of being quiet and brooding too. I think you could just as easily say that without input form the rest of the band, Radiohead would sound like Thom's solo stuff-- and while the Eraser was godtier, everything else is too one dimensionaly electronic heavy--we get it Thom, you're a fan of electronic music. I just don't want to hear an entire album that sounds of Idioteque over and over.

    • @directtalk1
      @directtalk1 4 года назад +122

      Luckily (for us) Thom has a fan-base that will just keep on following him as long as he's making music so he's transcended this roadblock by a mile. The industry just isn't capable of shutting him down.

Interesting the inspiration for this song came from watching blue planet. The loops sound like the sun hitting the water. Looking up to the surface- the distorted light. Can’t explain it. However, it lacks percussion, bass, and other sounds. The harmony of the melodies is a key component that defines Radiohead's unique sound. If you have a fondness for piano and are particularly drawn to the main melody of the song, along with a clear vocal, then I can understand your preference. This is a subjective matter. I remember when I had a modern music lecture on my 1st year of music school. I was not surprised by any example I was given to listen to that day except this one. This is the only positive memory I have from music school. Music school hurt me, drained me, ruined my will to create and to perform. But I can’t deny that I love coming back to this masterpiece.

      Such a shame that cover was in one of their worst albums... They might've done it big otherwise...

    I'm not entirely sure how many times I have returned to this song, because my heart has yurned to hear it again, its been a few times. Most times I'm in tears. This is a truely beautiful sound. You're a bloody gift to humanity Thom. I'm very sorry for the trials life has put you through. I know similar pain.
    Just thank you.

    I really like how they include the sound of his clothes brushing against each other, the detail became one with the music so beautifully :'))) Like it's made to feel alive, and it will keep on living forever.
